When the troubles of home become too much for 18-year-old Isabel Reyes, she takes comfort in the arms of a presumably, gentle man—her Knight in Shining Armor. Soon, she realizes her family drama doesn’t compare to the danger lying ahead when she finds herself on the run for a murder she may or may not have committed. Her only chance of making it out alive will come in the form of a stranger who may or may not have her best interest at heart
Will she survive? Or, will one mistake claim her life?
Eva lives in a small town outside of Houston Texas with her family.
She more than enjoys writing and staying in touch with each of her characters as their lives progress (even behind the scenes). She spends a great deal of time developing her characters, including the ones who seem to go in their own direction.
She loves creating complex characters who whose lives are filled with drama. Although her works are fiction, many of the stories she tell are based on actual events, each containing suspense, romance, humor and action.
She has a BA in Management and worked as an independent business owner for years before giving it up to pursue her passion of writing fulltime. She's never looked back.
This was a good story of a young girl who falls in love with the wrong guy. It is a good read, but there were just a few glitchy sentences that made me lose track of who was talking to who, which ruined it for me.
I struggled a bit with the characters in this book. Isabel is an 18 year old senior in high school that finds herself shy around the advances of Traubel. She is a naive girl, very trusting and Traubel is just not a good guy. The story flips between Isabel and Navarro, a federal agent that is on the hunt for a drug lord. I liked him, he was honest, and very determined to catch the people that got his sister addicted to drugs. Again, I did have a bit of trouble with Isabel, how entirely too trusting she was and the situation she found herself in. This is a prequel to an existing series that I will be reading.
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Wow what a story to keep you reading until the early hours of the night. A teenager leaves home but lands in more danger. Accused of a murder that she didn’t do and on the run. Couldn’t put it down.
What an amazing story. The author did such a great job with character development and background so the reader was fully informed but the book didn't drag. Although there were times where I wanted to slap some sense into Isabel. I often was screaming in my head, "You can't be that innocent and naive!" But then I remember this was set back several decades when children still had the luxury of not knowing how horrible the world really can be. CJ was a wonderful character, he had his priorities set straight and understood what was worth risking to gain the most good for everyone. Loved this book! Can't wait to read more by this author!
I found this both interesting and immensely frustrating, largely because Isabel Reyes, the main character, is so incredibly naive despite being supposedly clever and she lets herself get swept into the criminal life despite her father being an attorney, surely she would know better than to fall for some of the lies and blackmails that she is given. Even if she didn't pick things up from her dad's work, basic common sense should've kicked in long before things escalated the way they did. Because of this I found a lot of the story a little annoying and unbelievable. I get how this can and does happen but it didn't seem true that it would happen to her, and so quickly too. Winters writing is good and it does flow well so as book it is good to read, its just Isabel is so annoying.
I read a lot of different genres and enjoy them all, but dark twisty stories are by far my favorite and Eva Winters has done a great job with Escaping Trouble. Compelling characters, twists and turns, and heart wrenching mistakes along the way, make this book a difficult one to put down. But there is always a light at the end and redemption for some. Great read!!
This was one of the best books I've read in the last 6 months!! I read this from beginning to end and didn't put it down until the end! The 2nd book Saving Zoe sounds just as good!!! Bravo!!
3.5 stars. I really enjoyed this book it was full of suspense and menace. The only downside for me was the heroine, yes she was young but she was just too naive and seemed to accept the situation she was in without question. Other than that a decent read.
Escaping Trouble is a deeply fascinating and yet undeniably disturbing story of things that happen more often than anyone wants to admit. This could easily be based off real life events with its raw and honest storyline that will devastate your heart. This was a hard story to push through because it hurt every part of me. It was so hard to read, and yet it locked me in at the same time. This is a situation that I hope countless numbers of women can avoid facing if they can help it.
Isabel is doing her best to deal with her family drama while finishing up high school. She is just another young girl wanting more out of life. However, while trying to deal with situations far too complex for her, she finds herself in over her head until she can no longer keep the water from drowning her. She wakes up to a nightmare of a life that she must learn to quickly adjust to. When fate sends her unlikely allies, she is hesitant to put her trust in them, but when she sees the raging storm ahead of her, she realizes she needs to make a choice. Will she cling to the last ray of hope being offered to her, or will she let it pass her by and give into the darkness that threatens to eat her whole?
The characters were truly riveting and, and while this journey was cruel it was also filled with hope. It was truly a fascinating tale that had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The twists and turns were amazing, and there was truly never a dull moment.
Eva Winters has created a beautiful story full of crushing mistakes and undeniable evil while filling in the gaps with pure love and undeterred hope along the way. There was so much to cherish in this story, and I walk away with a much better understanding of the true horrors in our world and the brilliant light of those fighting to free those in prisons of many shapes and sizes.
I really enjoyed this story. I thought it was interesting. It was well written and had good characters. CJ is a DEA agent and is after Seranno, a high up guy in drug trafficking along with other things. It has gotten personal for CJ, as his sister has been caught up in this with drugs. Isabel on the other hand is 18 and almost graduating high school with a home life that she isn't exactly happy with. This leaves her open to Traubel, a not good guy. Isabel catches her mother doing something that she wants nothing to do with and so she heads to her best friends house to stay. They go out and then end up running into Traubel at a club and Isabel decides to give him a chance. He proceeds to take control and force things to go his way. As the reader, you catch on to what's going on and want Isabel to get out of it before it goes so bad. While it is easy for the reader, I know it's not so easy for Isabel though. Traubel quickly isolates her and puts her in a situation that she doesn't think she can escape. CJ goes under cover in Mexico to get Serrano and ends up as the next door neighbor to Isabel and Traubel. I liked how Isabel and CJ build an emotional connection and relationship before anything ever goes physical. It works for me because of the situation that Isabel is in and where her mind is at. I thought the story was well written and I enjoyed it. I thought that it portrayed this type of situation pretty well. There's some action in the story but it mainly focuses on the inner turmoil that Isabel and CJ go through. I was never bored during the story and I wanted to figure out how things were going to work out for Isabel and CJ. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book. I wish I could give it more stars as the actual plot idea was really good - but the heroine was so utterly unlikeable and stupid I just struggled to engage with the book. I am hovering between 2 and 3 stars on this one.
PLEASE NOTE - This is a prequel to an already released book 'Saving Zoe'. I fully believe if I had read this first I might have understood the prequel more. There was also a 'first chapter' of Saving Zoe at the end of the book and I was actually drawn into it and am very tempted to purchase the book to read. I'm surprised as I found the dialogue in Escaping Trouble very stilted and unnatural and nearly gave up on it.
I actually put this book down at 40% read, and left it for several days. I then forced myself to read the rest of the book so that I could leave a review. As already stated the 'heroine' (and I use that term VERY loosely) is fairly pathetic and irritated me beyond belief with her naïve and weak-willed ways. Ok she is a teenager but she has absolutely ZERO sense of self-preservation and seems to have no ability to think for herself. What CJ sees in her is beyond me! AND AS ALREADY STATED - this might be more 'understandable' if you have previously read 'Saving Zoe'. In fact I think it is probably the only way the book works.
The second half of the book (particularly when CJ was involved) was easier to read and I actually quite got into the story. I was then disappointed by the very rushed 'epilogue' which to be honest sounded like it was written by a 14 year old.
This is one of those books that make me a bit uncomfortable, yet I am drawn in by the characters and their struggles.
Isabel is a young woman, innocent, a bit naive but likeable with a bit of a rocky home life. She wants to finish her studies and move out of her parents' house - because they were making her crazy. She also works part-time in a diner with her friend Cynthia - who is a few years older and a bit more adventurous & confident.
Isabel meets Trauble (yep, that's the name - he uses) and who comes in on a daily basis. He is very handsome & Charming - yet, he still makes Isabel a bit uneasy as well. He becomes her "Knight" yet he is definitely more than he seems.
Isabel is likeable, like I said earlier a bit naive but I still cared about her and struggles. I adored the friendship with Cynthia - it's one that stands the test of the trials.
As well as Isabel and Trauble - we meet Special Agent Navarro.
Navarro is an officer on a mission to take down the men responsible for his sister's downfall.
This story is a frank and somewhat gritty look at the issues of drugs, prostitution, and abuse among other things.
I found the tale gripping and revealing. It did have a HFN ending which helped to soothe the bluntness of the story.
I can't say enough about this book! I read this one in one sitting because I absolutely couldn't put it down. A young girl with overprotective parents and almost zero life experience and in walks a charismatic, good looking guy to suck her right in. I don't want to give spoilers, but I will say that this book shows just how quickly a young girl can be pulled into a dark world where she doesn't feel like she has any choices. I was so caught up in this story that I found myself talking to these characters (like they could hear me, Ha). Beautifully written with rich characters that made me want to shake them, hug them, or slap them - sometimes all three! This is my first experience with this author, but it won't be my last.
Fantastic book reaching a hard to emotionally swallow subject!
This book was different from most romance novels. The plot was well written. This book deals with issues that occur around us that we don't think about unless you see it on the news or know someone who has been a victim of things described in this book. Yes we do get a HEA, but to get the HEA we go through hell. There are so many heartbreaking things throughout this book that will have you tearing up and on the next page you want scream at one of the characters. This book will definitely give you the feels.
*If you have triggers for drug use or physical and emotional abuse please skip this book.*
**I received an ARC of this book, but after reading it I preorder it.**
It took me about half the book to figure out how the characters were going to be tied together, but the story was great. There is domestic abuse and drug use/abuse if those are triggers. CJ is a DEA agent trying to take down the guy that had tie-ins with CJ's sister Sylvia and her drug issues/overdose. Isabel is a high school student who finds herself in way over her head in so many ways, due to her new relationship with Trauble. Things go downhill very quickly with their relationship and he is a very different person than she she though. She finds herself completely cut off from everyone but Trauble until she starts to interact with a couple of her neighbors, one of whom is an undercover CJ. There is a HEA for this story.
Like the warning says, this is not a "pretty" story - it's gritty, it's harsh, it's brutal. But it manages to maintain a sliver of hope during even the darkest scenes. Isabel is sheltered, naive, and far too trusting for her own good. I can easily see how she got herself into a situation that was so out of her control. I don't think I completely comprehend the relationship between Isabel and CJ, though. I know intense situations can bring out strong feeling between the unlikeliest of partners, so I can give the pairing the benefit of the doubt. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book.
What a fabulous story. It is extremely well written and has a superb flow to the story. It is full of suspense, drama, mystery, and even some great romance. The characters are very well developed and have great personalities. It isn't a short story that leaves you hanging. It is wonderfully detailed and you can just picture what is written in the book. I loved CJ's character and how he is so protective, kind, caring, and strong. He has a strong mind and a strong personality. Isabel is a little naive at first but as time goes on she becomes very street smart. She is kind and caring. She is also highly intelligent. This is a great story that is most definitely worth the read.
I will continue to read Eva Winters, but she betwixts and between me :) Yes, I know, not good english. I loved the beginning with CJ. I even enjoyed the very beginning with Isabel. In all honestly I thought the book was going to head a little different, so that is on me. I thought this well written. I have already read "Saving Zoe" and man, did this Escaping Trouble break my heart when combined with "Saving Zoe" I personally recommend reading Escaping Trouble first.
Great prequel story. I loved CJ and liked Isabel. It was easy to see how a sheltered girl was able to be lured in by Traubel. It was interesting to see both of their viewpoints to really get the full story. Imean excited to read the first story in the series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy.
Another great Eva Winters story that left me tense throughout the book. The characters are very well developed and I really hated Trauble, but I loved Isabel. The story is full of twists and turns. CJ is an amazing character, I really liked him. I highly recommend this book.
This review is for all 3 books in the Border Crime Series. Very well written. Gosh I couldn’t put down the books. It read like episodes of CSI. This is a human & sex traffic mess and all the people got involved in this lives changed forever. This is also part of our daily reality, which many people go through. It was brought to us in a great way. No one got on the other side unchanged…. Keeps u to the edge of your seat with nail biting stressful moments but with the tender romance still intact. If you did not read this books yet. You should get them soon. Take the journey wit Isabel. Awesome work.
