“Grey Freeman” is the pen name behind which the author hides all his hobbies, obsessions and bad habits. He is, literally, just a guy on the internet, and claims no special credentials or divine knowledge. The most interesting thing about him is his amused acceptance of the fact that he isn't all that interesting.
Freeman has written a very readable, thought-provoking little book. It consists of about 40 short chapters, each focused on Stoic teachings. Each begins, and is sometimes interspersed with. quotes from ancient Stoic philosophers, to which he has added commentary and ideas. for practice or application. In this, he follows in the footsteps of Marcus Aurelius himself, who did something very similar in his famous Meditations.
Perhaps the greatest benefit I got from Freeman's work was in realizing that I could follow a similar practice in my own journaling. Mine won't be for publication, nor was that of Marcus Aurelius, and perhaps for that reason, it will be the more useful for me.
I read one or two (OK sometimes three) chapters a day, with the goal of thinking about them throughout the day and practicing what I learned. I made a lot of notes based on Freeman's thoughts and ideas, and for that I'm grateful for his work.
A very nice jump-in/jump-out refresher on the application of Stoic philosophy. Grey has done a fantastic job putting this together. The ancient texts and modern interpretations flow very naturally and I find this is one of my favourite resources on the subject.
This is such an amazing book, short sweet and absolutely amazing, even for someone starting off with stoicism. Hats off to the author, for keeping it this simple.
Fantastic. I love the practical actions you can take, right now, to try and stay calm, be generous, and work to be a better person. Bonus points for releasing as Creative Commons.
