It's rare that a comic (or a story in any medium, really) can skip forward in time while maintaining narrative tension. But this volume of Saga does it. It breaks this rule as it breaks so many others, and it comes out on the other side, shining and smelling like a rose.

Seriously. This comic is like a master's class in how to write compelling, long-term, emotional character arcs. Vaughan is probably the best comic writer in the business these days. There's nothing he produces that doesn't absolutely wow me.....

A few years have gone by. Hazel is confined to a Landfall re-education center. Marko and Alana desperately trying to find her exact location and get her back. Her true nature remains hidden, but the secret is out, and luck only lasts for so long...

I guess it was good, overall, some very decent moments, some very memorable quotes. Hazel's openness and brutal innocence is the cutest thing ever, and I can never get too much Ghus. Still, it wasn't as great as the earlier volumes, some boring bits, and all the GoT nude scenes start to feel kinda forced. Losing interest, but looking forward to see what the ending chapters hold next.

Pasaron algunos años. Hazel está confinada a un centro de re-educación de Landfall. Marko y Alana desesperadamente tratando de encontrar su ubicación exacta y recuperarla. Su verdadera naturaleza sigue escondida, pero el secreto está afuera, y la suerte sólo puede durar por poco tiempo...

Supongo que buena, dentro de todo, algunos momentos muy decentes, y algunas frases muy memorables. La franqueza y brutal inocencia de Hazel es la cosa más hermosa, y nunca puedo tener suficiente de Ghus. Sin embargo, sigue sin ser tan bueno como los volúmenes previos, algunas partes aburridas, y todas las escenas de sexo al estilo GoT empiezan a parecer forzadas. Perdiendo algo de interés, pero esperando ver qué ofrecen los últimos capítulos.

Oh. My. God.
The Will got fat! Bahahahahahahaha!



Even with the whole We Gotta Find/Rescue Our Kid storyline, the thing that made the biggest impression on me was The Will's drug-induced weight gain. And really, kids, that's what you need to take away from volume 6 of Saga.
Not all drugs make you skinny.
Yup. Today's free life lesson is this: choose your drugs wisely, or you could end up bloated and talking to imaginary friends - like a chubby Gary Busey, minus the hair.



Alright. Saga.
Is there anyone who isn't already reading this? I mean, even people who don't read comics read Saga. It's the cool thing to do, right?
It is. It really is!
You'd think after 6 volumes it would lose its charm, but Vaughn & Staples manage to keep the story fresh with a time jump.
Hazel is a kindergartner. Due to some spoilery shit, she had been taken prisoner with her Grandmother and one of her original kidnappers, and they now live in a refugee camp-like place run by Wings. Her mixed parentage is the biggest bombshell in the universe, and lots of people are still looking for her. So it's a good thing she can keep a secret, right?

Honestly, there wasn't anything I disliked about this volume. It wasn't as AMAZING as the first few, but it's still the best graphic novel being published right now. So...?
Oh, and I absolutely loved Alana & Marko in this one!



If you haven't picked this series up yet, you simply don't know what you're missing. Clever, touching, smart, funny, relatable, and beautifully drawn.

let's catch up - what's this series about again?



oh, right!

despite how adorable i continue to find hazel (and for me to find a child character in anything "adorable" is already a rare feat),



this one was a little less-fun than some other volumes. part of it is how scattered it is - developing storylines for characters i do not care about, like these two.



no one cares about these two.

it also introduces a ton of new characters. some of them with surprising genitalia! this volume has SO MANY genitals, by the way.

but never fear, there are still all the old favorite friends.

although the will has really let himself go



killing machine or not, you gotta feel a little bad for him...



here, there are things that are ferocious:

things are definitely happening, and the story is broadening, but i am so enamored with certain characters, i kind of wish i could stay with them instead of teevee head people and blue attempted-homewrecker lady and… these two



i don't know why i find them so boring, but i very much do.

still, at least there's plenty of hazel, who's growing up so fast!



and it ends with a surprise for our heroes!



wonderful things happen in this one, don't get me wrong. i just wish there had been more with my heart-characters, considering i'm all caught up now and i have to WAIT for volume 7 like a chump.

but if, say, hazel's stories ever get published as a saga side-project while i'm just here waiting and waiting, know that i will happily read them, to pass the time and the pain of waiting.

the saga continues...get it? because i'm continuing my binge read of this series? called saga?

i'm wasted on you people.

this was not my favorite one thus far...riddled with time jumps...pretty convoluted...lots of sweeping generalizations via narrator and time spent in the prison industrial complex...

but there is a small and perfect creature called "ghus" so it's not all Ls.

bottom line: i'm saying it again. THE SAGA CONTINUES.

What more can I add to the sea of raving reviews on this series? The art, diversity, continuity, storytelling style etc. all ratchet up, in this pan-cosmic volume which also sees our tabloid reports get more storyboard time. I think another really special thing about Saga is that it allows for the passage of time 'off-screen' and changes people accordingly, which after years of reading Marvel and D.C.s near standstill slow time passing universes, is a sight for sore eyes.

In this volume the story is as Queen, as the art. Ticking all the boxes. Lovin' little Hazel :). 10 out of 12, a Five Star Read. And just like that, back to being a Five Star read for this volume, making it 5 out of 6 of the Saga volumes so far have earned Five Stars from me!.

I love these graphic novels, so it definitely took a lot of patience waiting for all the issues in this volume to come out. (But it was worth it!!)

I seriously missed these characters so damn much. My love for this series grows with each issue. And I’m completely in love with the love Alana and Marko have for one another and their family.



In volume 6 the search for Hazel continues throughout heart-stopping moments. I felt deeply for Alana and Marko as parents that have been separated from their child so soon.



And old beloved (and not so beloved) characters show up to interfere:



Those reporters (Upsher and Doff) were really starting to get on my nerves, so I was immensely grateful when The Will ambushed them.

And I also loved the newly added characters (Petrichor and Hazel’s teacher, Noreen).



I'm truly grateful that Noreen helped Hazel escape.

Also, the reunion between her and her parents was so sweet, I had tears in my eyes.




I’m crying.



But that ending. THAT ENDING!!! I cannot wait for what's to come next.



Overall, this volume was very satisfying, but yes, I still want and need more— I mean, I just finished reading and I already miss everyone...

I’ve generally enjoyed Saga from the outset, but reading the past few volumes has made me feel a little bit like a first-time guest at a clown orgy: a little bit intrigued, very perplexed as to how such acts can be carried out by so many people in a very small car, a little bit horrified, and just generally bewildered (and, perhaps, the slightest bit aroused). I’m happy to report that Vol. 6 is a welcome return to form, and I’m no longer contemplating anything that involves the words “Bozo” and “Cleveland Steamer.”

Having Alana and Marko back together certainly helped, and Prince Robot coming into his own as both a sympathetic and bitingly funny character was a key development (and, hey, who doesn’t love seeing a horned hermaphrodite in the shower?).

My enthusiasm has been renewed, so I think it’s safe to say, Saga, that I’m back in like with you.

Ah, Saga, you continue to be intriguing and wildly weird. Lessons about family. Lessons about race. Lessons about loss and letting go. All of this packaged in a bizzaro universe of strange creatures, cool spaceships, fascinating characters! (Yup, I just used ALL the adjectives!)



I have given this disclaimer before, but this series is a bit extreme with sex and violence. It's not up to me to decide what is too much for you, and maybe you won't find it all that extreme. But, I felt like I should mention it again before someone reads it based on one of my reviews and is all like, "Dang, Matthew, you are a freak!"



Glad I found this series through Goodreads recommendations - I have continued to enjoy it with every volume!

For those who have yet to experience the phenomenon that is Saga, the basic premise is that two star-crossed lovers, one from a planet and one from its moon, fell in love during a time of war with each other. Not only is associating with the enemy viewed as unspeakable, falling in love is a whole other ballpark. So imagine their surprise when they got pregnant.

Our amazing little main protagonist, Hazel, is four years old, and even though she is away from her parents, she still has Klara, her grandmother, and is even going to school. Be it may, the school, and the place they are living is a little unconventional, but Hazel is safe for now, even though she is starting to have some important questions.

Marko and Alana are desperately looking for Hazel. They have reconciled a lot since the previous bind up, and are in a really good place right now. I mean, in as good as of a place you can be in when the whole universe is hunting you and your daughter and mother/mother-in-law are missing. I always love seeing Marko and Alana's relationship unfold, and their always present and always heavy emphasis on their family.



Another thing I really loved about this particular bind-up was the emphasis on teachers and all the good they can do in the world. How important they can be, and how much they can impact a child's life. It was really beautiful and I really appreciated seeing that representation. Noreen was everything.

This series, also, represents so many different sexualities, and I always love it so very much. Yes, this comic is for sure for adults, and much of the content is mature, but it packs such an explosive and important punch.

And the underlying message that surrounds this whole series is about race, and it is something so pure and beautiful and makes me feel like this story is handed down to us from above. I lose words thinking about it, yet feel so blessed to be impacted by it. Please, if you haven't, give this series a try.

I was crying pretty hard most of Chapter Thirty Six, but that ending shook me to my core. I cannot wait to get my hands on Vol. 7 on March 28th, 2017.

“Dying is one of the few experiences we'll eventually all enjoy firsthand, and like most shit that's commonplace, it's boring to dwell on.”

As always, I'm now going to break down each chapter in this bind up. I mostly do this so I can go back and refresh what has happened in which specific issue. There will be SPOILERS, so please do not continue if you have not read this graphic-novel, Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3, Vol. 4, or Vol. 5!



CHAPTER THIRTY ONE:
We get to see our MUCH GROWN UP Hazel, who is four years old and is in kindergarten. We soon realize that when she escaped with her grandmother, Klara, and Lexis, that they were put in some sort of prison like living center. It seems safe, even though Hazel must always hide the wings she has inherited from her mother. We are also introduced to a new character, Petrichor, who is transgender and absolutely amazing! I have such high hopes for her character!

CHAPTER THIRTY TWO:
Marko and Alana have not forgotten about their baby girl. They have searched for her every second of the time, while also repairing their love. They soon find out that Hazel is on Landfall, Alana's native planet. We also get to see that Prince Robot IV is with Gus and Friendo, and his much older son that he is calling Squire.

CHAPTER THIRTY THREE:
Now that the Brand is dead, Upsher and Doff, the journalist and photographer from many issues past, have decided to try again with the story surrounding Marko, Alana, and Hazel. A much larger and softer the Will finds them, honoring his sister's wishes from the grave, and decides to use that information to find Prince Robot IV, since he still wants retribution for the Stalk's death.

CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR:
Hazel, who has started having many important questions about who she is, has decided to show her teacher her wings. Her teacher fainted upon realizing what Hazel was, and hit her head pretty hard on a table. Petrichor finds her, and immediately wants to help and protect Hazel, because she too knows what it feels like to hide who you really are. Yet, the teacher is more than happy to keep Hazel's secret. The Will is taking drugs to make him see the Stalk, and Upsher and Doff are in fear for their lives. Marko and Alana make Prince Robot IV go with them to rescue Hazel.

CHAPTER THIRTY FIVE:
Upon rescuing Hazel, Marko and Alana hit a hive mine, but Marko goes ahead with the plan. The Will finds where Squire is, even though he is hoping to find Prince Robot IV, and is going to kill him, until the images he is seeing of the Stalk turn into the images of his sister, the Brand. Also, Ghüs gets angry.

CHAPTER THIRTY SIX:
The amazing teacher, in fear for Hazel's life, is trying to sneak her out. The plan starts to turn bad on her, but not before Marko finds them first. I was honestly crying through this whole issue. Marko brings Hazel's doll back to her, and hopes to bring her and his mom back to the ship where Alana and Prince Robot IV are waiting. Klara tells him that she has found a home that she is thriving in, and doesn't wish to go with him, so Petrichor goes in her place. PETRICHOR TELLS ALANA SHE IS PREGNANT AGAIN, AND I LOST MY FUCKING MIND!!!!

I love these characters and this world; this graphic novel truly is a tier above the rest. Yet, if anything happens to Ghüs, I'll riot.

Reread February 2022. Not to self. After reading in the typically disjointed way of comics, an isue or volume at a time, then you wait a few months, forgetting all the details, ALWAYS reread the whole story, all of the volumes!

Original review, with some additions and edits, 7/7/2016:

Every volume is five stars, all of them! Period. And even the comics great Alan Moore blurbs this book and says it is great! Alan Moore!

So if I can't talk about good parts without spoilers that were actually a bit moving, I will say:

*I liked the fact that Hazel's kindergarten teacher talks about the importance of reading to her and she says the best line in the volume: ". . . anyone who thinks one book has all the answers obviously hasn't read enough books." !!! Perfect?!
*Just when you think this veers into the territory of escapist entertainment, something happens like this" In the kindergarten, children are separated from their parents. This is actually war time, and when the kids do art projects they describe the horrors of war. Brutal. Heart-breaking.
*I love that crazy shapeshifting Izabel, the nanny. More Izabel!
*Of course the inventive Vaughn/Staples have to add Petrichor, an intersex character. And we like them!
*Small example of invention: Violents--flowers that sprout in the wake of bloodshed
*Prince Robot is pretty funny, claiming racism because everyone thinks that all robots look alike. . . yet they do all look alike. . .
*Ghus sort of ups the adorable quotient in this one, and then, zero to sixty, he's suddenly. . . . not just adorable. . . Let me just say Vaughn can quickly go from smart-assed witty to violent in a panel.
*That creepy multiple-eyed villain, The Stalk, is pretty convincingly and entertainingly evil. And dead, so she's a ghost, who still has sex with The Will, a neat trick
*Upsher and Doff, the gay couple journalists, are funny and fun.
*Marko and Alana, the straight couple, our central hero and heroine, are the awesomest couple in comics.
*And Alana is the most awesomest, possibly the best of all the great Vaughn women characters. Though it is just possible the baddest-assed woman award has competition from her mother-in-law, Klara

These folks in this indie comics series break all of the Big House (Marvel and DC) rules, teaching them several lessons, one might hope; that the essence of comics has to be invention, not same old, same old, playing it safe. Saga is more profane, more vulgar, more heartbreaking, more tender, funnier, than hundreds of superhero comics. Better. Just plain better.

The good news is that this is the last volume that is currently out right now so you don't have to see my reviews for this serious pop up all the time anymore. The bad news (to me) is that this is the last volume that is currently out right now so there's no more for me to enjoy + review.

It's bittersweet, really.

Anyways.

This latest volume was everything that I had hoped it would be and like many other fans I can't wait to see where the story goes from here. If there's one thing that Mr. Vaughan does really well it's leaving you wanting more. The cliffhangers in this story are worthy of an award in themselves.

If you've seen my reviews or other fans say that if you're not reading this you're missing out, it's not because we are crazy. It's that if you're not reading it, you really are missing out.

My god. Right in the feels.

There's just something about this series that grabs hold of you and whips you from side to side as it gnaws on you before spitting you out, licking the stumps of your missing legs before licking your face.

Saga is STILL the biggest place to be if you want smart stories, fantastic art, deliciously evil humor and adult situations, and a rocking romance for the ages that doubles as social commentary and an epic rescue and tragedy all rolled into one.

Sound confusing? Yeah. Blame that all on me. The fact is, this series, and specifically this volume... ROCKS.

I'm of the opinion that this is the STANDARD TO BEAT, and I've read a lot of comics.

Not only is this independent, but it just GOES all the places it wants and it does it brilliantly, not caring a whiff about what anyone else is doing or thinking. It's Art, man. ART. :)

I can't believe how great it is. Do I sound gonzo? I am. I don't care. This is the BOMB. :) Still. :)

And isn’t that the truth? It's such a great quote and extends to so many real life things.

I’m impressed with everything in this volume, the story has progressed forward nicely and has developed with the time shift and, surprisingly, none of the tension has been lost.

This is precisely what makes this series so damn good. All the alien sex and weirdness remain, stamped out with unique and slick visuals, but what really makes this so compelling is it’s swiftness. It quickly drops redundant story threads and introduces more strange and exciting characters.

I'm excited to see where this will go next!

I guess that 5 star streak for all the Saga collections had to come to an end sometime.

This is still the best comic book space adventure/fairy tale/romance you’re likely to read, It also still has enough weird alien characters to populate a cantina in Star Wars as well as more violence, profanity, sex, and nudity than most R rated movies. However, it seemed to lack of a bit of the pop that made the rest of the series so next level. Part of this is probably due to so many story threads being scattered at this point, but some of those are knitted together by the end of this one.

This very well could mark the end of my journey with Saga. If so, I’d just like to pause for a minute and say, “Thanks for the memories.” We shared some good times, you and I. As they say, you’ll never forget your first. So, thank you. Sincerely. But, I’m afraid it may be time to go our separate ways.

As I sit here and reflect, I can’t help but wonder how could something that once seemed so fresh have grown so stale? What happened to that fun little adventure I fell in love with? The artwork is still as beautiful and vibrant as ever, but where’s that witty dialog and that colorful cast of characters that once seemed so intriguing? When did this glorious space opera devolve into this rather pedestrian soap opera?

I realize there was always that rollercoaster feel to the narrative. While the odd volumes were hurtling down hills and rolling through corkscrews and loops, the even volumes were slow hill climbs pushing the story forward. However, this time that hill may have been too steep; the wheels have nearly ground to a halt. It’s all just so . . . incredibly boring.

I do know one thing for certain. It doesn’t help reading this story one volume at a time, especially these filler volumes. It’d be like picking up a book, reading the dullest chapter or two, then setting it aside for a couple of month, before you carry on. It’s makes no sense whatsoever, so I will end that practice right here and now. More importantly, I need to wait and see if this Saga actually reaches a conclusion, because I have no interest in an endless soap opera. Sadly, that wait will no longer be all that difficult.

I'm still loving this series. There are appearances by some of the same crowd. There are some new people/thing we get to meet in the prison where Hazel and her grandmother are living. The Will is in it, but he's really gotten huge and really drugged out. TV head is in it and his tv head son. :-)

Marko and Alana find out where Hazel is and they go on a mission to save her with the help of TV head.

I thought the book was really good and I loved how it ended! It was a Yay moment for me, but I will not say because it would spoil the surprise totally. Lets just say I'm really looking forward to what in the heck will happen in the next one.

Finally finished the last available volume in Saga and I find this volume to be less entertaining than Volume 4 & 5. I don't think I'll be continuing with this series until it's completely finished and that will still be a long time, so this will be my last mini-review for Saga in the next 5 or 10 years. I would totally recommend this to a fan of graphic novel, it's a good series, but it's not something great for me.

Some cons I have on the series:
-Some of the creatures in this series are disgusting but pointless that I find some of them completely uncalled for.
-I never grew to like any action whatsoever in this series even though other than that the artwork of the environment and characters are gorgeous.

I really love the art work, and the story is so creative, I particularly liked how there was a time jump between this one and the last one too

... things to do until the next Saga album is finished:



go fishing, twiddle your thumbs, play some massive online games or follow the advice of BKV at the end of issue 36 and read some of the other comics currently being published, preferably by his sponsors and editors at Image. Me, I thought I was getting into a good rhythm by reading two albums in a row, but once again, I reached the final chapter with a "Is that all?" expression on my face. The current album is no better and no worse than the previous ones, but there are a few things that recommend it in particular:

- it closes some of the hanging threads from previous issues reuniting Hazel with her parents
- not so many new characters, focusing instead on existing favorites and the comeback of some old friends the ghostly babysitter is my favorite
- fabulous artwork, as usual from Fiona Staples
- more jokes than snappy banter than I have come to expect from the series, or so it seems right now. The Robot Prince and the Will seem to be at the receiving end of most of them, with Marko and Alana in a better mood that usual
- last, but the most important, a slightly grown-up Hazel that takes an active part in the story and is not just a package carried around by the adults.

With Hazel in the spotlight, I thought the new Saga album raised the cuteness factor to an unprecedented level, not that I'm complaining, since I am starting to get a little tired of the constant raising of ISSUES by Vaughan - same sex relationships, gender identity, discriminations, corruption, war crimes, etc. The preachiness of some parts of the story is still balanced though by the good parts, especially the focus on family in the context of an endless and pointless war. And BKV, as he likes to referr to himself in the letters page, can be relied upon to pull some surprise rabbits out of his magic hat, and to turn the story in an unexpected direction. There's a very short step from cute to scary in his arsenal, and the best example in this issue is the lovely hamster (or whatever he is) Grus:



Needless to say, I will wait for the next issues of Saga and the louder the grumbles you hear from me, the more keen are my expectations.
