Read this aloud to my 4-year old right now. She is very enthusiastic about the story. Jimmy's parents are quite drabby and fairly strict, and Jimmy's life is pretty limited until his Oma (grandmother comes to stay). Then Jimmy begins a series of adventures. This book is a nice way to start reading real "chapter" books to your young children. The chapters have are short and have an illustration at the beginning, as well as at least one other in the chapter. For kids making the step from picture books to books with more words, this is a nice intermediary.

My son and I read this together and had a wonderful time following the story. Highly recommended for reading with your kids, or just letting your kids read on their own. It encourages a love of animals and spending time outside, and teaches a lot about friendship. The illustrations are top-notch, made by the author, who is an accomplished animator as well as children's book author.

I thought the cover was cute, so I picked it up. It was okay, but nothing I would rave about. I think a second grader way into animals would enjoy it.

Solid story with elements that feel like an older tale.
