A short but very detailed inspection on the life, values and impact of the greatest Indian revolutionary, Bhagat Singh.

I bought this book from the Jalian Wala Bhag memorial at Amritsar. To be honest, the decision was more of an emotional one rather than a genuine interest about the subject. For most of us, like me, Bhagat Singh may seem a bit overrated as his achievements appear little more than the killing of a British officer and the throwing of a bomb in a british assembly. However, this book made me realize how biased our education system is and how less I know about the contributions of non-congress people in the struggle for independence.

I am about four generation away from the central events in this book, still the author made me understand how the martyrdom of this 23 year old woke up an entire nation to the grave injustice of british rule. Also, he was very successful in unraveling the many layers of Bhagat Singh: as a genius intellectual, socialist, romantic, atheist and much more.

The only complaint that I have about this book is the author's repeated use of Hindi verses without a translation at critical points. I don't know why Hind authors don't understand this but when you sell an english book, the reader expect nothing but english in it. It doesn't help a lot that the author, very magnanimously, used english letters to form these sentences: It is still Hindi.

I bought this book from Jalian wala bagh, and to be honest I was pretty apprehensive if it will be just shallow praises without any real content, a propaganda book. But this book is a just tribute to Bhagat Singh in most concise form. It reflects on his persona from historical facts and first hand recounting of people. Full of references and pointers it can be said to be a good book to start exploring quite a few further readings.

Bhagat Singh was the patriot we know him to be, but he was also a very intelligent visionary. Who achieved so much in such short span of time that you are taken aback by his conviction. A person who was really well read and had outstanding clarity in thought. An examplery leader, a voracious reader and an idol to follow and be inspired from in so many ways.
