I wish I had this book when I took Calculus. Seriously. This is a condensed, easy to read textbook, that I always recommend to my students, particularly when the Steward is frustrating them.

Written by Gilbert Strang and Edwin Herman - this is an excellent textbook. Strang is a well-known mathematician at MIT known for his work in linear algebra. This is very easy to follow, and the explanations it provides for mathematical concepts are written as you would imagine they would be spoken. You really can learn calculus just by reading the book and doing the practice problems. Some word problems assume you have familiarity with analytic geometry; I didn't, so I wasn't able to complete many of these. The book teaches you the rigorous definition of a limit - do you really need that? No, but hey, why not be comprehensive? There were more than enough example problems of every kind for every section - I only did one out of every 4 and still had 30 problems to complete each section. There is no fluff, no outdated "computer application" boxes with outdated graphics, and the material is well-organized.
