Some of the chapters were good however, once I hit the victim blaming portion I lost interest in the book.
I just don’t feel it’s fair to victim blame, let alone by a white male, when largely women, and particularly radicalized women, are impacted by abuse - in a patriarchal society.
I don’t feel a white male understands the magnitude nor the complexities of abuse that impacts mainly women. Abuse is not their fault and chapters like this perpetuate the victim blaming mentality.
If the purpose of this book is self help, victim blaming is not the way to do that. I would also imagine this doesn’t fair well with the law of attraction.
If you are a woman who is or was abused, this book will likely serve as a trigger..
Mostly victim shaming garbage. There is this running idea that if we pretend everything is great, nothing bad ever happens, and shove any trauma way down while slapping on a smile, that we can be happy. It goes against what we actually know when it comes to how the brain works. Trauma uninformed.
OK, I’m going to level with you here. At first I thought I was gonna give this book a meagre 3-star rating. But as I made my way through, I found myself moved by what the author had to say.
In his introduction Gladwell describes how he spent a good portion of his life in pursuit of wealth, but felt empty and unfulfilled inside. That is until he was struck by a revelation, and felt at one with the universe. From that point on he vowed to live with meaning and purpose and to add value to the lives of others. And in his book Gladwell attempts to spark the same revelation for his readers.
Sounds kinda cheesey, right? And perhaps something more for the spirituality shelves than self-help.
Anyway, the remainder of the book are 68 profound questions, designed to get you thinking more deeply about how you live your life, accompanied by the author’s reflection prompts and wisdom.
For me, some of the questions posed had a more profound effect on me than others, though I can easily see how some may be moved by the ones that failed to move me.
Two of the questions that really stood out to me through their immediacy: “What if the universe was created for you to have this exact moment?” and “What if you knew you were going to die tomorrow?”.
But in my view, the strength of this book lies not in the questions posed to the reader, but in the powerful, moving prose that the author uses when he reflects on each of the questions. He takes the reader to a happy place.
Here follows some of my favourite exerts:
“What if every emotion you ever wanted to feel was at the touch of your finger-tips, was on demand in any moment?”
“Your suffering is a choice. Pain may be real, but suffering is optional. Feel it, see it, love it until it fades away. Your mind wants a reason, but your heart does not need one”
“What if you fell in love with life exactly how it is?...When you fall in love with life, it will love you back. Imagine being in a relationship with an unlimited amount of joy, love, compassion, and happiness. With more excitement than you know what to do with. That is a relationship with life.”
This book was a healthy gut punch to the soul… in a truly healing & thought provoking way. I love the book breakdown by thought provoking essay questions & truly taking a step back to think about them. There’s even space to journal in your own thoughts. I had to share some of my fave insights from the book:
“Needing nothing attracts everything. Accept that you are all that exists. Accept that perfect health is yours. Wealth is you. Love is what you are made of.”
“You’re the universe discovering itself as itself. There is nothing you need to prove to anyone, including yourself, for this to be true. You are absolutely perfect in this exact moment. With that knowledge, you can have, or be anything you want. It’s already you” 🩷
I found this book to be extremely profound. It was a simple read which to me is perfect for these type of written works. It gives enough to open your mind and get the wheels turning but doesn’t go so deep that you become lost in its message. I think anyone can benefit from picking up this book. It will change how you perceive life, your life especially and that’s simply amazing!
This book is amazing and these questions give you so much to think about and consider. Read this of you want to change your perspective. Many of the questions will resonate and you'll begin to think about things you've never considered. Thanks for sharing this wisdom.
In my opinion, this book is very unhealthy. I don't recommend it. It is also not suitable for Kindle because you are supposed to write answers on several lined pages, so most of the book is pages with lines. This book is over-simplified, over-generalized, contains a lot of toxic positivity, and, in my opinion, won't help you at all.
This is a high motivational book that empowers you to make the right choices, steers you into the right path, & leads you to a victorious life. Highly recommend!
Excellent questions to focus your life - Choose or Lose. What if there was no bad guy? (Do you need something to define yourself against?) What if forgiveness isn't for the other guy? You have to make up your mind to live the life that you want, or be trapped in the prison of your indecision.
There were writing errors that drove me crazy, but overall wit was a good book with things to consider. If you’re feeling lost on journaling to find answers about life - go for this book.
I really enjoyed this book, even if it just reminded me of things I've forgotten. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs encouragement. You are in charge of your own destiny.
Questions only you one can honestly answer. Thought provoking and the simplicity of it present life’s answers and question in one go. I liked it. No fluff just realness.
Foi uma leitura lenta e estranha. Houve partes que fizeram muito sentido para mim, mas a grande maioria do livro soa muito a "coach talk". Not my thing.
