Jillian dreams of abandoning her business major and going to culinary school in Europe, but her parents’ expectations and a crippling fear of flying threaten to keep her grounded. To address her fear of flight, she travels to 1908 to meet Wilbur Wright. She doesn’t plan on meeting handsome Everett, who broke from his privileged life to pursue a love of flying contraptions and who claims they’ve met before. When she realizes she’s falling for him, she’s faced with a heartbreaking choice that could destroy her chances of happiness and perhaps unravel history itself.
Since I read both books together I think I will copy my review from A Thief in Time to this review.
I was so excited to get A Flight In Time to review. Cidney Swanson is one of my favorite Young Adult writers. Come to find out she lives in a nearby Oregon town. She's lucky I don't have a car! And that I have social anxiety that keeps me from seeking out people I don't know. Still, her Saving Mars series is my favorite series for young adults and up. I wish she could write more of those as it really helps the me I was as a pre-teen/teen. There was very little out there in the sci-fi realm that had strong female leads. Please read the series if you get the chance. Her Rippler series is good, too.
But back to A Flight in Time (book 2). Here is a comment I made under A Thief in Time (book 1):
Oops, somehow I am reading book two that isn't on GoodReads yet. Maybe I should see if I got it? I am 37% into A Flight in Time. Now I feel confused as to what to do.
Then I realized that at one point or another I did get book 1. It was $.99 at the time. Somehow it got marked "Read" so I never saw it in my "Currently Reading" shelf. So I stopped reading book 2 and started reading book 1. This series may soon rival Mars in favorites!
A Thief In Time is very exciting. The main character, Halley, is quite the character. I love the depth of spirit she shows in spite of a less than ideal upbringing. Ms. Swanson built her so well that I felt she was real. I love her friends and how it is they found themselves in the enviable position of having access to a time machine.
By the way, I love the names of the characters. Good nods to science!
I want to put more here but I don't want anything to spoil a future reader's experience with that book or the next.
So, those who follow my reviews know how I hate cliffhangers. This was not that. But awfully close. No one was left in danger. But I was so in love with the characters and the time travel adventures that I was so happy I had the next book downloaded and ready to go.
~~~~ Since I can't find the place to review book 2, A Flight in Time, I will put it here and move this part to that book when it is live on GoodReads. Right now it is $.99 on Amazon whereas book 1 is $3.99. Both are well worth the money!
I will give this five stars also. My biggest problem was the names when I read #2 first. After getting to know everyone in #1 I still had that problem. I expected to see a little more about Halley and her life. So it was a bit of a shock to start reading about her friend, Jillian. Her life wasn't as interesting or as full of challenges, as far as I was concerned, but she has a sciencey mind and is working towards her own goals. That warmed me to her.
I must admit that I couldn't quit reading this book--another 4 AM sleep time. The book was full of anxious moments, 'how were they going to get out of this?' kinds of questions sailed through my head. And lots of time travel!
AND that ending!!!! I can't wait to find out the resolve for that. Still, not a cliffhanger. Just a little something to have Cidney Swanson fans waiting with bated breath!!!
This second book in the series was excellent. I was drawn into Jillian's story right away. The added elements to the story were great (no spoilers) and they made the story much more exciting.
The one issue I have a problem with is that Jillian's "big fear" is falling, yet this also makes her afraid of flying? ? It makes zero sense. Falling and flying are two totally different things. Also, she says that the time travel feels more like falling than flying and yet she is ok with that.
The story totally drew me in and I read it within 24 hours. I wanted to keep going with the story so I purchased the third book immediately after. FYI the third book is a bit disappointing compared to the first two.
I have to say this book was my favorite put of the two. Jillian character was like me in away everyone trying to tell her what to do. But she wanted to something different. She needed and wanted change but she needed to get over her fear of flying. And when she went back in the time machine to figure out the flying and how it works. She met a man name Everett in 1908 who loved the idea of flying. She met the Wright brothers and learned so much about flying. Again I loved this one better and the plot and all the characters even through some were still from the first book. I do think I will read more books from Cidney Swanson.
The 2nd of the 3 musketeers of time travel finds herself falling hard for a young man when she risks traveling alone to view the birth of flight, in hopes of quelling her frlear of flying. Ot also sets into motion several things when they collide with Khan's attorney, a version of Khan from 2001, and the originator of the device, Littlewood. But why did Jillian suddenly want to get over her fear of flying? It has to do with her dream. Book 2 in the series provides plenty of action, suspense, & romance , along with a peek into DaVinci's turn at the end.
Another short review. I could hardly put it down! I'm thinking about checking out the author's other books but I can't wait for DaVinci and maybe Littlewood's stories. Quintus Valerius was an interesting addition. I'm glad there was some follow through with him.
I wonder if they'll have to thwart some version of Khan again. I really hope Littlewood remains a good guy, too.
Seriously this was a great follow up to the last book. I loved it so much
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
As with all Cindy Swanson's other series this book was wonderful. Her characters are believable as well as the situations. I had wondered what had happened to the Roman and now even more I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I have love all of the different series. Bring them on.. Young adult as well as this old lady will love reading this series.
Love this story. Could have done with less Kahn and Littlewood and more of the three girls. Loved the backdrop of the Wright brothers. And I loved that Jillian still gets to pursue her dream of being a pastry chef. Is there a next book on the horizon? I sure hope sp
This time the main focus was on Jillian. She spent a lot of time trying to conquer her fear of flying by researching the first people involved in inventing the airplane. I really enjoyed the historical aspects in this series. I can't wait for the third book to be released.
Wealthy young woman overcomes her fear of flying by meeting a Wright brother. She is also willing to give up her dream for the sake of another. I don't like reading the villain's POV, so I skipped all the Khan chapters. The epilogue and the next book feature a character Khan introduced, but I think I know enough to get by.
Well, since it had been a year and a half since I read the first book, I probably missed a few things along the way, but the book kind of stands on its own for the most part. It was a fun story and since I am a pilot, there was a natural connection here too. It was a good story and the last half of the book was hard to put down.
Almost as entertaining as the first. Everett's Instalove for Jillian didn't quite work for me. I'm glad I chose to listen in order since the hero of Book Three time travels in this book also.
Enjoyed a bit less than book 1, mostly because there were a few things left unresolved. However, after starting book 3, it seems they may be resolved in that book? So, this isn't really a stand alone if you want to see where all the characters introduced in this book end up.
A little to much bouncing around for me. The first part of the story didn’t tie in with the rest very well. The end did a good job of leading to the next book in the series.
This book started out slowly and quite frankly it still gets bogged down with Jules khan. I guess we need some sort of villain but a little goes a long way. I think there was lots more time travel than romance but to each his own. I'm wondering if we are going to see a third book to complete the series?
Time-travel romp. Heavy dose of instalove, but the friends' relationship makes up for it. I assume Khan is the author's favorite character to write, as he gets instance after instance of total douchery. Here's my fav:
"After making the decision, Lhan had checked into the ER under a completely bogus name and got himself treated quickly by moaning louder than anyone else."
As with the first book in this series, I like this book. I did not love this book. I think the story is great, I love time travel and this is an interesting new take on it. I feel like maybe the whole thing with a copy of whatever leaves it's native time being left there is just a bit too convenient. How nice that young girls can just pop around history and snatch themselves a cute new boyfriend and in no way disturb the time line. That being said, it IS a fun read with some fun suspenseful moments.
