This book is written for the many Christians who have experienced "dry" periods in their life. In the pages of Overflow , Richard Blackaby shares a treasure trove of biblical truths that can help you experience living water each day. As you read these pages, may you find refreshing and be empowered to undertake God's assignment for you.
This book was okay. I read it in a group with several retirees who seemed to get a lot more out of it than I did - possibly they are wiser than I am, possibly I am better educated. But there is nothing wrong with the book, so I'm not going to be very critical.
Dr. Richard Blackaby, who seems to be following in his father's footsteps writing books about biblical leadership, has chosen to profile two of the most well know leaders in the Old Testament: Elijah and Moses. Both were chosen by God to complete nearly impossible tasks, neither were perfect people, and there are similarities in their missions that can be applied to our personal missions today. Both did their best to follow God's will, both felt inadequate, both achieved miraculous successes as long as they did exactly as God commanded. Both faced trails, both fell short. Blackaby includes some interesting questions at the end of each chapter that would be good for some group discussion. He doesn't quite follow through with either figure, ending his own narrative before they depart this earth. Maybe this is intentional, so that you'll have to go to the Bible to finish the story. But reading more in depth about them can help to make the Bible seem more real and applicable, so I think the book is useful for that reason.
Although this book was written for ministers in particular, the same principles apply to all servants who follow Jesus Christ. There are great nuggets gleaned from the examples of Elijah and Moses that encourage you to stay the course in rough times as well as seek the Lord in the waiting times.
This was such a great book! Using Elijah and Moses it shows us how to walk with God, but also how we cannot assume sin will disappear. Many great thoughts here and each chapter ends with questions to ask yourself.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It’s a beautiful commentary on the life of Elijah and the end of Moses’ life! Such an encouragement to every follower of Christ! I’ll be referring back to this one often!
