Different Natures and the Spaces in Between

Rate this book
The third book from Graham Field, after the success of his first two books In Search of Greener Grass and Ureka comes Different Natures which takes you on three journeys. Each gives an honest and passionate insight into the evolution of a compulsive traveller. Looking for direction with the wrong eyes spawned Graham's lust for wandering. The miles cleared his vision and the hunger for longer distances grew with an insatiable appetite for new experiences. Divulging tales from his diaries spanning a twelve year period of travel from the Arctic Circle to Mexico, Graham Field's journeys are his life. Inevitably, these experiences increase his awareness as he passes through various natures of both a reluctant maturity and the extreme environments between his destinations. From midnight sun to darkest nights, there is as much diversity in these tales as common threads. Taste the addictive exhilaration of inhospitable environments.

Graham is a compulsive traveller, with a compelling manner of brutal honesty of integrity. His books are authentic experiences from his 37 years of diaries, kept as he's meandered around the planet from foot to bicycle, to motorbike to four wheels.

Travel on his mind, bikes in his blood and little in his wallet, Graham's low budget journeys of humour and honesty have inspired many to hit the road in search of their dreams. A solo traveller at heart, his observations take his readers with him to Mongolia, Iraq, the Arctic Circle and many other distant destinations.

With a life time of travel anecdotes and hard earned wisdom, Graham's view of the planet is unique and contagious.

Graham is the author of eight books, which are all available as audiobooks. Twice nominated as 'most inspiring adventurer' by Adventure Bike TV. He was a resident co-host on Adventure Rider Radio RAW for five years with Sam Manicom and Grant Johnson of Horizons Unlimited. He has written articles for various publications worldwide.

Hello Friends,
There’s a new addition to the Tiger Coward Adventure Motorcycle Library—Different Natures by Graham Field .

This book comes in three parts—each one a modest odyssey, told in Field’s raw and hilarious style. The rides take him from Colorado to the Pacific Northwest, up to Alaska, and down into Mexico. These aren’t epic, round-the-world expeditions. They’re real, relatable road trips that could inspire any of us to saddle up and ride.

Field’s writing is vivid and unfiltered. Like his earlier books, he paints himself as a loner curmudgeon, but he’s constantly making new friends and traveling with old ones. That tension—between wanting solitude and needing connection—will feel familiar to many of us who travel by bike.

Let me be upfront: I loved his first two books. I thought they were deep, thoughtful, and very funny.
This one? Even better.
Absolutely brilliant.

Here are 5 reasons I loved Different Natures:

1. The Writing
Graham Field is a master of the daily travel journal. His observations of scenery, people, and culture are spot-on. His storytelling flows effortlessly, with a sharp edge and a raw honesty that makes it impossible to put the book down.

2. The Humour
Mark Twain once said the source of humour is not joy, but pain. And Field proves it. His tales of mishaps—whether self-inflicted or stumbled upon—are often laugh-out-loud funny. He doesn’t spare himself either.

In a world addicted to outrage and overreaction, Field’s awkward humour might feel risky to some. Not to me. As Jerry Seinfeld once told the grads at Duke: "Awkward doesn’t need to be fixed. Don’t lose your sense of humour."

3. The Trips
These aren’t influencer-fuelled, fully sponsored, support-vehicle sagas. These are regular rides by a regular guy. They’re accessible, affordable, and authentic—what Steven Sherrill once called “Modest Odysseys.”

And that makes them powerful.
They remind us: you could do this too.

4. The Bikes
As you know, I’m Tiger Coward—Coward is my name and I ride Triumph Tigers. I’m on my third one and probably not done yet. Field, though, takes a very different route. He buys whatever is available and affordable at the last minute.

This time around, his mounts are a Yamaha Venture, a Kawasaki Concours, and the Swiss Army knife of ADV— the mighty KLR650. These aren’t perfect machines—they’re practical ones.

5. The Writer
Graham Field is the beating heart of this book. World traveler, skilled writer, jack-of-all-trades—he’s worked construction, driven trucks, built stages in strip clubs, and even won a game show.

But more than his résumé, it’s his personality that shines. Each book reveals more of who he is. And with each one, my appreciation for the man behind the words grows.

In conclusion:
Different Natures is another fantastic travel journal from Graham Field. If you haven’t read his first two books, grab them while you're at it. Highly recommended.

A good story about an epic ride.

If you like tales of motorcycling adventure, you will like this book. The author is very talented and I would have given it five stars if not for his hatred and constant demeaning attitude about his host country, the United States. He appears bitter about many other issues which detracts from his obvious talent as an author.

Read this book! The author is a motorcyclist, travel writer and an observer of life, not necessarily in that order. He makes Alaska, Canada, the west coast of America and Mexico all come alive before our eyes; and gives an honest appraisal of the things he sees and the people he meets. Short of being there yourself, this book is a terrific way to pass the time. In fact, it's inspirational.

Outro livro incrível do Graham

Fácil de ler e divertido. Seu senso de humor ácido e pensamentos profundos te prendem. Li os 3 que escreveu e já estou ansioso por mais. Uma aula para quem sonha em viajar o mundo de moto ou apenas dar um passeio.

Graham's best yet.

I read via Kindle and listened via WhisperSync. Graham's narration of his own story adds another dimension to this fantastic book!

GF's books are much more than travel books, and this one is no exception. Brilliant travels on the road and a devoted traveller's mentality.

Keeping in mind this is a collection of many smaller trips in comparison to his first few books, I found it difficult to maintain interest in this one. It felt like the further I got in the book, the more bitter he sounded towards other people and it kind of left me feeling a bit sour. His previous books already established the way he felt about people, and established that his voice is a little rougher than other long-distance motorcycle writers, so I wasn't expecting it to be all love and rainbows. I still finished it for what it's worth.
