Chloe Watson is an ordinary girl looking forward to a nice, peaceful winter, until she finds a bizarre artifact in a hotel room and meets its owner, Andrew Paige. He might look like an ordinary suit, but he's got a string of secrets hiding behind his knee-weakening smile. When he offers her a job at The Dimensional Shift, Chloe is tossed straight into the world of inter-dimensional tourists and their odd accommodations.Between dealing with the Shift's unusual guests, and trying to determine if the boss' interest in her is strictly professional, Chloe uncovers a plot to steal the hotel's dimensional keys. With the help of the town gossip, her alien abductee neighbor, and her new invisible best friend, Chloe confronts and inter-dimensional crime ring and a host of complications that make romancing the boss look like the least of her problems.
Frances Pauli writes books about animals, hybrids, aliens, shifters, and occasionally ordinary humans. She tends to cross genre boundaries, but hovers around fantasy and science fiction with romantic tendencies.
Her work has won four Leo awards, two Coyotl awards, and has been nominated for an Ursa Major award.
She lives in Washington State with her family, a small menagerie, and far too many houseplants.
Fun read with a scifi dimensional twist to the world. Loved the dimensional twist to the world and never knew what I'd encounter next. And Andrews...*sigh* lovely. Gentle start to a lovely couple. Chloe made me smile through out.
*****FULL REVIEW***** Chloe's still working her job as a housekeeper as the tourist season comes to a close. Cleaning one room of a single man, Chloe is shocked to see a woman with almond shaped eyes enter from the balcony, who eyes the golden pyramid covered in strange shaped symbols. Chloe's boss tries to talk Chloe into a match making with the man, but she thinks he has a wife. The handsome single man, Andrew, claims to have no wife or know who the woman was. Chloe finds herself saving the strange pyramid from the woman, once again, intent to steal it, and that he had left behind when checked out. Only to find the handsome man is interested in Chloe as an...employee? Could there be other signals there too? In a dimensional world, where many run parallel and slightly different from the next, Chloe is learning how to tend to the needs of many strange being and making friends. Things start to get mysterious at her new job, thefts of the Dimensional Hotels access cards and more are happening. Who's to blame? And is Drew sending mixed signals to Chloe?
Fun read with a scifi dimensional twist to the world. Loved the dimensional twist to the world and never knew what I'd encounter next. And Andrew....*sigh* Lovely. Gentle start to a lovely couple. Chloe made me smile through out.
I could go on with scenes that made me smile, but I don't want to ruin the read for you, so keeping it short.
First page, I was smiling at Chloe with 'hitting the deck' to hide from her long winded (and alien obsessed) neighbor. IN HER OWN HOME!! LOL! I did enjoy Chloe's easy going personality. And grew with her in feelings. Chloe has an ability to attract good humor from others. Andrew, Drew as he goes by with Chloe and the nice looking single man, seems to know more than he's able to share. And maybe even more comfortable with Chloe than a business owner (manager) should be. But they could make such a cute couple.
Actually, I really enjoyed all characters and the creation of the Dimensional Shift idea. I enjoyed that I didn't know what would walk around the corner next, or what species Chloe would have to clean the room of next. Or what would happen in this unpredictable place. A hotel that caters to inter-dimensional travels in between dimensions. Great fun quick read.
I will be getting the rest of the books in this series!
I struggle with science fiction romance (SFR). I'm not a big romance reader, though I don't mind romance in a book itself. However, I haven't had good luck with the merger of the two genres. Most times, I'm left feeling like either the science was laughable or the heavy panting got in the way.
So, as someone who doesn't like the genre and who has struggled to even finish most SFR books recommended to her, I *loved* this book. Loved it. Laughed and laughed, and laughed some more. And I didn't laugh at it. No, I laughed with it.
I thoroughly enjoyed how Pauli took the common "vanilla human meets the aliens" trope and gave the woman a job cleaning hotel rooms in space/time. That just rocked.
A major thing that I enjoyed was that the love interest was not the focus of the book. Our heroine had to deal with moving into another dimension, making friends with an invisible man, and her crazy neighbour. The relationship between Chloe (our heroine) and Drew (the handsome boss man) never felt forced, so I could enjoy their story along with Chloe's adventures.
2.5 stars This was a fun and light read, but I sort of felt like the execution didn't live up to the concept. Maybe it's because this is a first book and the beginning was a lot of set-up, but I found the first half very slow and not super interesting. Once she started working at The Shift things picked up, especially with the introduction of Ian who I think is my favorite character. Chloe and Drew were OK but I didn't feel a particular connection to them. And there were still some major things left unfinished, for example, we still don't really know why Chloe was recruited. Despite some of my criticisms, as I said, this is light and fun and I found myself smiling a good amount near then end. Cute and simple wrap up as well with a clever little twist.
I give Frances Pauli 4 STARS for the delightful short sci fi novel with a different with a look at an ordinary part of life anywhere travelers exist. Chloe Watson is a cooperate world drop out who now lives a simpler life in a small tourist town where she works as a hotel maid for 6 months a year of she is lucky and maybe a few more days here and there if her boss will call her in, with almost a year in residence she is starting to feel like a local. Andrew Paige a handsome man whose room she cleans and Chloe have interactions over an item in his room. Then, before Drew leaves he offers her a job at his hotel "The Dimensional Shift"and she says no! However, they meet again & he ask her to just take a look around and besides it would be at double her salary, that couldn't hurt, she agrees. Finally little did she know that he ran an interdimensional hotel for beings of different dimensions that traveled to and fro all with different needs such as environmental, lighting and little things she hasn't ever thought of. Well dear readers get your pyramids in sync & be ready for the dog because in the next few minutes as you arrange to read this entertaining book there might be an invisible man sitting next to you, oops right now.... Working in a hotel, might sound boring, but being a multi dimension destination has unusual problems, added to that someone is after the dimension sift keys. Especially keys that have multi destinations programmed in.
I found The Dimensional Shift on the SFR Brigade’s Pitch Contest and went to Barnes and Noble to purchase and download the ebook. This is cute story with an unusual main character. Chloe’s job is cleaning rooms in a local hotel in the northern US. Her job is seasonal as the hotel has few guests in the winter. On one of her last days of the season a woman in room 306 walks in from the balcony while she is cleaning. The only problem is that there should not have been anyone in the room. Drew, the only occupant, was out and when he returned confirmed that the woman must have broken in. Meeting Drew leads to a job offer for Chloe.
Drew offers her a job at twice the pay at a hotel he helps manage. She does not have to move she can commute to work from her living room. The hotel is an inter-dimensional hotel catering to being from different dimensions. Chloe will be working in the human section. Chloe is still cleaning rooms but is drawn into an ongoing mystery. She must use her skills to find the answerers to several question, not the least of which is whether or not her boss, Drew, is interested in her.
I enjoyed the story. At times it was a little slow, mostly because of the world building. The characters were fun and unique. The concept was interesting and lends itself to future stories. In fact the second book featuring Chloe is already out.
Read the synopsis and trust me that it's worth it. There's a lot more in the book!
I found myself guessing what would happen next and I was right most of the time, but I totally didn't expect that. I was surprised that I was correct because the story line was NOT obvious. (I must be a good guesser or on the same mental wavelength with the author. Anyways...)
The writing was well done also. There were only a couple times when I was a bit confused with the details or the action, but the confusion was quickly resolved when I continued to read.
If you like sci-fi, jump right into this book and keep reading until you get to the last page. You will not be disappointed!
This was a very cute funny story. While I didn't laugh out loud I did smile throughout and really enjoyed the characters and the world Pauli built - I'll be reading the continuation of Chloe's adventures for sure. I'm not a fan of Listal and hope she gets hers and that we get to learn more about the various dimensions as Chloe earns more locations on her key.
While I enjoyed the story and writing style I think it would have benefitted from a little more editing - it sort of rambled in places. Not enough to detract from the story, just sort of a general feeling.
I never suspected the world of hotel hospitality and housekeeping could be so much fun! Frances has done it again with another fun read, sexy heroes, naughty aliens, and a hotel to die for. If you're looking for a fun escape into another dimension, this book is a great one.
I want my own little pyramid key that lets me explore infinite dimensions. I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel.
This was a great book, i was completely swept away with the character in her awesome new world. The world of the hotel was so alien and well constructed for the reader. I absolutely love it and can't wait for the next book!!
