He is known for his dry, off beat sense of humor, and his grand ability to crack himself up, while most members of said large family, roll their eyes.

His first endeavor with pen to paper, "SELF HELP Because I Don't Have A Clue How To", is a testament to these abilities.

Working out what matters to you

The tongue-in-cheek humour is evident from the first chapter as the author guides the reader through an imaginary bookstore to the overcrowded self-help section and loudly proclaims in the next chapter that he doesn’t have the help you are looking for (hence the title of the book). He doesn’t have all the answers for you, but suggests that you look inside yourself for your own answers. Then he gets to the gist of helping yourself – defining your wants, needs and desires under the headings of money, time and health. If you are willing to take an hour to read through this little book and do the suggested exercise it may give you some perspective about where your life is heading and how you can turn it around.

"This wordy dissertation, we have both just waded through, has been merely my effort to persuade you, alright manipulate you, into making a paper chain."

This pretty much sums up this book. It is very wordy and takes a long time to get to the point. The reader is left feeling like they have been approached by a random talkative stranger at a party who doesn't stop talking long enough for you to make an excuse about needing the bathroom in the hope that there may be a window you can climb out of to make your escape.

It was meant to be humourous but it really missed the mark with me. There is a vague message about not letting your fears/insecurities stop you from doing stuff, but the message is buried quite deeply in a wordy ramble.

I actually enjoyed reading this book. It put quite a smile on my face as I read through each chapter. His journey on the "self help" is rather interesting. While this was my first self help book that I read it was rather amusing with the writer's charming personality. Taking a journey back to earlier years when life didn't hit me or anyone else that hard did make life more fun. The best thing I got from this book was to understand that we are stopping ourselves from achieving what we want. His term of chains when minor at first could appear large to us even if they are small. Taking the first step is the only way to go

If you take the time to do the exercise the author suggests, I believe it could be helpful to those who need the boost to stop procrastinating and do things they often dreamed of doing. The restrained elephant analogy was very good. The too often quirky wittiness was not inspiring to me, and it gave the appearance that it was added just to lengthen the book.

Useful Tool

I love how this short book is written in a fun, conversational tone. It’s nice to know a person can feel something so passionately that they take the time to write a plucky story to keep the reader engaged while also learning a valuable life lesson. Thanks for the reminder!

"Self Help Because I don't have a clue how to" by Michael R. Hopson, was actually...very helpful. Although he presented it in a very humorous way, the lesson taught was quite good. I think this book really will help some people. So, if you are willing to break the chains that bind you. read this book! I highly recommend this book. Well done, Mr. Hopson.

Meandering prose with little point

I skipped around a lot. I mean a lot. Nothing caught my attention and what usually did were grammar mistakes and strange quirks about the writer's style. The size is right, the content is not.
