He's the most feared shifter in the sea. She's a middle-aged grandma from Arizona. He may have finally met his match...
Hated and mistrusted. Feared and misunderstood. For decades, the Master Shark has protected the underwater city of Atlantis. Now, his Empress has set him his most difficult mission yet:
A relaxing beach vacation.
Coyote shifter Martha Hernandez doesn't want to take a vacation. She doesn't want to sit around in some fancy all-shifter resort when her pack could be getting up to who-knows-what mischief in her absence. And she definitely doesn't want to bang this mysterious scarred, silent stranger like a screen door in a hurricane.
Nope nope nope. No matter that he's her one true mate. She's a respectable widow with no call to be having such fool notions at her time of life. What would her family think?
But he is the Master Shark. And he has never failed in the hunt. He'll capture his mate's heart... even if it means learning to salsa.
Combining romance, action, and a generous helping of humor, the Fire & Rescue Shifters series is a must-read for fans of TS Joyce and Sherrilyn Kenyon. Each book is a standalone romance focusing on a different couple, but characters reoccur throughout the series. No cliffhangers!
Warning: Contains steamy scenes between a no-nonsense, mature Latina heroine and an alpha hero who will forever change your opinion of sharks. Can you handle the heat?
Zoe Chant loves writing paranormal romance. Over a cup of tea (or something stronger) she whips up sexy tales of hunky heroes and adventurous heroines to tantalize and satisfy her readers. Sizzling hot romance, no cliffhangers!
While series should ideally be read in order, all of Zoe’s books are standalones and can be read in any order. This includes books within series.
My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!! ***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! Yes, I got a review copy of this book, and no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book! I have bought this book because I loved it, and I own most of Zoe’s books!
This cover matches the series, and it is pretty cool!
Okay this is the 5th book in the series, and it was a surprise for me. I didn’t not think the next book in this series would be the Master Shark’s story, but it was awesome. This book crosses over into Shifting Sands too!! Magnolia, Breck, and Tex are all part of this book too! It was an unexpected and very welcome surprise since I love both series!
Finn and Martha are just awesome together! I love Martha’s devotion to her family and that she speaks her mind, and she defends others even if she isn’t sure what to make of them. Finn has always served others, and he has always hidden part of himself away because it would scare others. He has never had anyone put his needs first or been shown what true happiness is. He is awkward and sexy all at the same time. I loved their story, and how two series are now tied together!
Zoe always manages to surprise me! Her stories are always awesome! I haven’t read a story yet that I didn’t truly enjoy! I can’t wait to see what she cooks up next!
I highly recommend to shifter fans everywhere who love HEA endings especially if you already love this series, Shifting Sands, and Zoe Chant!
Fantastic! I love this series and I am so glad Chant found a character worthy of a book in this series, so we could stretch it out for one more. I will be so sad when there is no more to come. Master Shark, or Finn as we find out is his name, is forced to go on a vacation. While there, he discovers his mate. First up, I loved both of these characters. Finn was sweet, heroic and devoted. He was an excellent hero and I can't find a single fault with him. While he seemed perfect, he didn't seem out-of-touch or unrealistic (as much as a person turning into a huge shark can feel realistic, that is). But Martha might have stolen the show for me. She was a grandmother who was devoted to her family, funny as hell, sweet, smart, kind and loyal. She was resistant to being with Finn at first, because she thought she has already lived that part of her life and was too old, but Finn was persistent and soon she couldn't resist the giant man.
This is a must read for fans of this series and another excellent addition. I will definitely be rereading every book in this series, and absolutely recommend to fans of shifter romance. It can standalone, although every book has been a five star read for me, so I think you should start from the beginning.
Totally not what I expected! What a great book. I love shifter stories but I've pretty much only read about wolves, dragons, and bears. I need to broaden my reading material. After this book, I'm intrigued enough to read about all kinds of shifter romances. This one was a lot of fun. Highly recommended!
Master Shark is just that, the biggest, baddest shark to have ever lived...a megalodon shark shifter. He's now working for the Pearl Empress of Atlantis and everyone either fears him or respects him. He's on vacation by order of his Empress when he spots Martha and knows right away she's his mate.
Marta is a coyote shifter. I mean could she be any more different from a shark shifter? She's also a middle aged grandmother and alpha of her pack. She had a good life with the father of her kids even if he wasn't her mate. She feels bad for even thinking about Finn, but she knows her husband who is no longer alive would want her to be happy.
First let's talk about Master Shark's name...Finn. A fish named Finn, that's the funniest thing ever.
Martha doesn't want anything to do with Finn at first but she can't fight her attraction for long and Finn pursues her which makes it harder. So they end up spending time together and it's funny because he doesn't understand everything since he lives most of the time in the sea.
They wanted to be together but didn't know how that would work since she couldn't leave her pack and he couldn't leave Atlantis since he was second in command. But each knew that the other probably wouldn't be happy giving up their life to live with the other. I loved how when they finally thought they had it all figured out, they get special gifts from someone special that makes everything even more fun. This was so fun to read.
3.5 🌟 Well, I like the idea of this Shifter Resort and will gladly take more of it! The Master Shark took some getting used to but Martha was amazing, loved her from the start. It's especially cool that the love interests in this book are older which I haven't often encountered in these kind of books. Which, to sum this up, means that this book made more than up for the lack of firefighters 😉 Now let's see what Hugh's story brings!
My favorite of the series, and looking forward to Shifting Sands. This was a more developed story with older characters, something I got a huge kick out of!
I literally cannot interact with this book without thinking about Knives Out anymore. I ADORE that the titular Master Shark’s Mate is called Marta. I fuckin’ love Marta. She’s fuckin’ wonderful.
I love that Marta’s a coyote. I love that she’s a grandma, and a widow. She already had the “Love of her life,” even if he wasn’t her One True Mate, and still feels loyalty to those vows. I love that memory of Manny, her dead husband, is what allows her to let go of her self-imposed stagnation to embrace her mate.
I love that the Master Shark’s given name is fuckin’ Finn! And that it’s that because his mom, a human, had a sense of humor! I love that despite being almost totally socialized in undersea society he has such warmth and respect for others under his stern outward presentation.
I love seeing the everyday turmoil of Marta’s coyote pack vs. the local rattlesnakes, and how, though it initially feels so much smaller than the big problems we’ve seen elsewhere in the series…it’s the same. I love that Finn bridges that gap with the same empathy and ability to peacekeep, THROUGH his power and shark-itude, as he does for the sea kingdoms, and that he never once treats their struggles like smaller or lesser ones.
I fuckin’ love this book, guys.
Like, it’s not flawless. And a lot of its strengths come from the context it exists within. But inside that context? It’s so, so damn good.

I was on a Sci Fi binge now I am on a Paranormal shifter binge and that is how I came across Zoe's books. Once I find an author whose books I like I will read them all and let me tell you Zoe has a lot. They are quick and easy reads. Some serious some make me laugh but all have danger and fated mates. I enjoy paranormal stories as they take you away from everyday life and anything goes. 1 like
An impulse buy. The blurb sounded hilarious and the book had me snort-laughing. It's hard to imagine two creatures more different than a shark and a coyote, but the author makes it work. Funny, sweet and hot by turns. Also short. Read in an afternoon.
Crossover!! I loved going back to Shifting Sands for this one; the setting was perfect, and really the only possible option for these two shifters to meet. Zoe can do no wrong.
The Master Shark’s Mate is a quick reading Seasoned Romance, Opposites Attract, “soul-attraction” love story with the 2 main characters finding their life “mate” later in life. The characters - Martha/FMC, a female shifter Alpha desert coyote pack leader and Finn/MMC 😁, a singular and powerful man from the deepest depths of the sea, a Megladon Master Shark shifter must cooperate together merging their complex lives to gain their HEA. (Imagine the fantastic deep underwater setting in the 2018 movie The Meg - ❤️ as Atlantis and Finn’s home).
I began reading the Fire and Rescue series because I was drawn to the idea of uniquely different mythical Shifters (Griffins, Unicorn, Shark, Phoenix, Sea Dragon, Pegasus). The descriptions of the settings and the characters in each book have been creative and imaginative. I like that these characters are more than basic dragons or bears, although I have favorites in such series, as well. Readers who prefer light rather than dark paranormal novels, quick reading angst-free stories, a touch of humor & fantasy in their books, Seasoned Romances (mature characters), the Opposites Attract trope and HEAs may wish to check-out The Shark’s Mate and this entire series. I again loved the references and mention of the underwater world, Atlantis, in The Master Shark’s Mate - such fun!
The Master Shark’s Mate, #5 can be read as a standalone title but the characters from the earlier books do make crossover appearances. For the most enjoyment I recommend reading the previous books in the Fire and Rescue Shifter series (particularly the previous story, Sea Dragon/#5) which are similar in fun and mythical creativity - Dragon/#1, Pegasus/#2, Griffin/#3, Sea Dragon/#4, Master Shark/#5, next in the series Unicorn/#6, and Phoenix/#7. Be careful not to confuse this series/Firefighter Fire & Rescue with another Zoe Chant series - the Wildfire: Fire & Rescue series. Should you decide, shop carefully it can be confusing (my only complaint). ;)
There is on-scene sexual intimacy between the 2 main characters that falls somewhere between sweet and steamy (2 of 5, on 0-5 Very Clean - Very Steamy scale, IMO). The intimacy is just one aspect of their growing committed relationship. It’s not casual sex and not the main emphasis of the story. Strong profanity is used rarely, I believe less than 5 times. There is no violence. Due to the aforementioned, this series is not suitable for young readers IMO and readers who prefer entirely Clean material may chose to look elsewhere.
There are stories that I enjoy, some that make me smile, some that make me feel. The Master Shark’s Mate gave me all of that and so much more. I cannot remember the last time I chuckled out loud, laughed until tears rolled down my face. It’s a priceless story told with just the right amount of humor, sensuality and emotions.
Martha is such an alpha, she’s kick butt take names and a meddling mother, grandmother as well. She’s on a forced vacation and has no time nor inclination for romance… she’s too busy calling the kids back home and micromanaging her pack from the beach.
The Master Shark would do anything for his Empress, anything. But this is just too much for any self-respecting shark shifter to bear. Relaxing. Why would someone want to relax when there was so much to do in a day. Yet he’s been sent to this beach resort to “relax” and enjoy himself. Well, he won’t defy his Empress, but he’s not about to relax on land that’s for sure.
Then the unthinkable happened. Martha and the Master Shark meet… and discover they are true mates. What the heck?! Now they’re too busy denying facts to worry about relaxing. And maybe, just maybe they’ll find that a land shifter and an ocean shifter can find common ground together.
I absolutely loved Martha and the Master Shark’s story. And yes, he does have a given name after all, but I’m not going to give that gem away. I’ve run into unlikely, almost impossible shifter pairings before… but this one is so priceless.
With this story Zoe Chant has crossed two of her series, Fire & Rescue Shifters and Shifting Sands Resort. Both are fun, sexy, dangerous and addicting… put them together and you have precious gold. I loved running into characters I know outside of their usual story lines. I will caution though that although the Master Shark is not a member of the firefighters team he did play a huge part in the previous story Firefighter Sea Dragon, so if you haven’t read the entire series yet, I”d strongly suggest at least reading that one story first for there is definitely a back story involved in The Master Shark’s Mate.
I think by now that you get the idea that I strongly recommend this story and the entire series (both of them) for any Paranormal Romance or Shifter Romance reader.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
An ancient prehistoric shark form, 80ft long, the Master Shark, is sent on vacation by his Empress & her Consort to Shifting Sands, a shifter only resort. An Alpha Coyote grandma is sent on vacation by her pack, and can't refuse her present, cause even the kids chipped in their pocket money.
It was a lovely romance with older shifters which made a nice change.
4.5 stars. I am really enjoying this series but I am getting impatient to read Commander Ash’s story and we still have Hugh to go. Although this story doesn’t have the shifters from Fire & Rescue, it does have John and the Empress Neridia. The Master Shark's Mate crosses over between the Shifting Sands and Fire and Rescue Shifters series. I have not read the Shifting Sands series so it meant nothing to me but I will be looking into it. We met the Master Shark in the previous Fire and Rescue book 4 but he isn't part of that crew. We have Martha who is a coyote alpha, a lovely more mature heroine which I loved. The fact Martha is a coyote that loves the desert and fate has paired her with the Master Shark, Finn, I found cute. I was interested to see how the author would sort this problem out but Ms Chant has done so in a believable and interesting way. Martha's pack have saved to send her on vacation to the Shifting sands resort as a special treat. Having been happily married to a human for 30 years and widowed for ten, finding her mate comes as a hell of a shock. Believing it is wrong to be happy again, Martha tries to keep away from Finn. Finn’s character is aloof, broody and all alpha but it hides who he really is and I loved that Martha bought that softer side out in him. The Master Shark has been sent by the Empress, against his wishes, on vacation to the Shifting Sands resort. Seeing Martha and realising she is his mate is also a shock but one he is happy to explore. Except he thinks Martha is running from him because of who he is. Martha has no idea who he is which I thought was great. Martha was going to give up her mate and living in Atlantis as the pack needed her. After getting smacked around by John for sulking instead of going after his mate, Finn arrives in Arizona to help fix the problem that had Martha running home. I found this to be a truly heart-warming read as these two different souls find happiness and a good compromise for being together, with a little help from the Empress. Loved the teaser for book 6.
Finn, The Master Shark, Second-in-command, Voice of the Empress had been protecting the underwater city of Atlantis for decades. He was feared and misunderstood. When the Pearl Empress Neridia (FIREFIGHTER SEA DRAGON) requested he take a vacation.
He didn't know how to relax, he even thought that the Queen of Atlantis request was a punishment. She didn't take no for an answer in fact she booked him a stay at a shifter only resort. The man couldn't do anything else than obey and headed to Shifting Sands Resort.
Martha Hernandez, a coyote shifter didn't want to take a vacation. What if her children and grandchildren needed her help staying out of whatever mischiefs they would cause. Well her daughter made sure she understood never to call home again until her vacation was over.
Finn found more than a relaxing spot at the resort, he found his one true mate even though she kept running away from him. What she didn't know was that he loved the thrill of the hunt.
Martha couldn't deny what she felt for Finn any longer. They both gave into their feelings. But when it came to their living situation they found themselves in a dilemma, one that nearly ripped them up in pieces.
In the end all worked out and their lived happily ever after. With some wonderful surprises from their loved ones, Finn and Martha got a lot to look forward to.
THE MASTER SHARK'S MATE is the fifth book in Zoe Chant's FIRE & RESCUE SHIFTERS series. It was humorous, engrossing and fascinating.
****I received a free copy from the author, without any obligation to review.****
I received an complimentary ARC with no obligation to leave my honest review! Wow, this one was fantastic!!! The Master Shark's Mate crossed over between the Shifting Sands and Fire and Rescue Shifters series. As we met the Master Shark in a previous Fire and Rescue book but he isn't part of that "team" I feel its still relevant and sits nicely between the two series. I've not ever read a Shark shifter before and didn't really know what to expect and I have to say that the Master Shark was perfection for me!!! I feel she captured the shark's characteristics in his human form perfectly. I loved him and thought he was totally swoon worthy, such a perfect mixture of alpha male that you would expect from a fierce shark but with a shyness and fear of rejections just like everyone else. He really was great and I could gush all day about him. Martha was fabulous, and is the alpha of the Ochre Pack of coyotes. I loved that she honestly tried to sacrifice her family and being on land for her mate. I was concerned that it would all just be one way but this author handled the living arrangements perfectly. I was so so happy with how it worked out in the end so that they could enjoy their HEA. This one was written so beautifully and was so heart-warming that I think is one will remain a favourite for sure. Overall one I couldn't put down and enjoyed very much. I feel you could read this one without having read the others in the series BUT I think for maximum enjoyment definitely pick up the other books first!
Plenty of humor and heat; one of my favorite stories of the Firefighter series
This is actually a crossover between the author’s Shifting Sand series and her Fire & Rescue Shifters series (this book falls after Firefighter Sea Dragon in that series). I haven’t read any of the Shifting Sand books (yet!) and didn’t feel I was missing out on anything by starting here—I didn’t even realize it was a series until the author’s note at the end. As for the Fire & Rescue Shifters, while the books in the series can all be read as standalones, there is background laid in previous stories, in this case, particularly in Firefighter Sea Dragon, so in order to get the richest experience, consider reading that before diving in here.
These books just keep getting better and better! I admit I was surprised when I saw the next book in the Firefighter series was going to feature the Master Shark, but intrigued as well. And talk about an opposites attract story! You don’t get much more opposite than the former King of sharks finding his true mate in a coyote shifter, matriarch and alpha of a desert based pack. I loved that these were more mature characters, and it’s also a second chances story of a sort, as the two have a chance at starting a new life with each other—if they can manage to find a way to make their conflicting responsibilities work.
Sweet and touching, there may be a little less action to this story, but still great characters with plenty of humor and heat. One of my favorites of the series. 5+ stars
The last book was awful, but this one is really, really good. This one is about the Shark Master, a sea shifter, and Martha, a coyote shifter. One from the sea, the other from the desert, literally from different words, but they work together, and make a really cute couple.
I liked that it was a more mature romance, with grown ups that have already lived their lives, and have experience behind them. Both have been responsible for their people and know how that feels. There are the usual complications and a few misunderstandings, but mostly because they are both so focused on what is best for the other that they forget to think about what is best for them.
I think this book is my favorite of the series, so far.
Two individuals from vastly different cultures come together through compromise
At first I read this because I thought it would be funny and ridiculous, but I was wrong. It was sweet and heart warming. If you don’t think of shifters but of two separate distinct cultures who have similar purposes the story takes on a different more heartwarming flair. Finn is an elder gentlemen, diplomat, warrior, loyal to his Empress, and virtually second to her. Martha is the alpha female head of a large ruckus family. He’s use to others fearing him and being a loner. She’s use to being in the middle and leading her nosy family. It’s sweet how he tries to woo her and how she embraces who he really is. it’s insta love because they are mates, but aside from that they learn to compromise to make it work. I’m glad I read this book. Finns back history comes out in this book as well as his personality. Reading the book before this book sets up this book. The series is well worth reading for people who enjoy shifter romance.
A shifter romance between two strong leaders who may be older, but are far from over? Yes!
This was a very good story with great editing. Our grumpy Master Shark is sent on a NOT-optional vacation to the Shifting Sands Resort by the Pearl Empress. Pretty much the moment he arrives, he scents her--his true mate. The coyote shifter alpha pack leader Martha has also been sent on a vacation, but this time by her family. Ten years widowed, she has remained loyal to her late husband of 30 years, a human she truly loved. She never expected to encounter her true mate at her age, and when she discovers he's not just a shark shifter but a Megalodon? It all seems impossible to consider. No
But love does find a way, even when big sacrifices are needed. Where there's a will, there is a way--and some shifter magic doesn't hurt, either.
Very likeable, relatable characters and an engaging storyline. Even if he's now a little less grumpy, he's still an awesome character who deserved his redemption arc--and I hope we see more of this couple.
I honestly didn't think I was going to enjoy this one at first... so much so that I almost skipped it. But after reading about the master shark in the previous book I was intrigued enough that I wanted to meet the woman who could snag his heart. Martha is as feisty and hot blooded as any coyote can be and she's a perfect balance to Finn''s stoic coldness. I thought it was interesting that the master shark even had an actual name. I thought he'd have to he given one like the sea dragons but then we find out that his mother was human.. which was an even bigger shock actually but then the name made sense. I'm really glad I decided to read this one and I'm hoping with the way things ended that he might just show up again in Zoe Chant's new series in "wildfire sea dragon"..... that would be pretty awesome. So I do recommend this one but I would say make sure u read "firefighter sea dragon" before it.

This book is about a coyote shifter meeting her mate, the master shark shifter at a resort. The coyote shifter is sent by her kids and grandkids and the shark is sent by his empress of the sea. The central conflict is pretty obviously shark/coyote--how could it possibly work when one lives in the ocean and the other lives in the desert? This is a welcome change from the central conflict being a "bad guy" third character who wants/kidnaps/SA's/etc the FMC and the MMC has to save her. It's just a fluffy romance about how two people from completely different worlds can compromise and mesh.
The spice barely spices, but it's a quick read and it was so cute I didn't mind that much. Overall, this was fun, and I loved reading some age representation--it feels like every book is about a woman/girl in her 20's. I haven't read any other shark shifter romances and I haven't read any of the other books in this series, but it wasn't that important for context.
The Master Shark’s Mate is a crossover between the Fire & Rescue Shifters series and the Shifting Sands series. It’s a beautifully written story of Finn, The Master Shark, who has long been feared and spurned by the denizens of the sea, and his fated mate Martha, alpha of the Ochre Pack of coyotes. Can the megaladon Shifter who makes his home in the ocean find happiness in the desert sands of coyote country? Will the wily coyote be content to trade the sand for salt? Read this story of love, loyalty, devotion and sacrifice to find out. Truly heartwarming and full of emotional content. (If you’ve read neither of those aforementioned two series, you can still easily enjoy this one, but you’ll want to read them, too.) I received a complimentary copy from the author with no obligation to review.
After being ordered to take a vacation, the Master Shark doesn't have an idea on how to relax. Martha has been the matriarch of her pack and doesn't understand how to let go. Instant connection blooms, but Martha has loved before. Will Martha give him a chance? Will they find a way to compromise to keep their relationship?
Loved seeing this tough as nails couple fall in love. Both characters figured they were to old and wouldn't find a match, but yet they were perfect for each other. While being a little bit of a stick in the mud at first, the Master Shark showed he did have feelings, just had been trained to keep them hidden. Martha definitely showed that she was willing to take the chance and in the end was willing to meet Finn half way! Great book and cannot wait for book 6 in this series!

This is a very different Fire and Rescue Shifters book. We spend much of it at the Shifting Sands shifter resort. Both the main characters, the Master Shark and Martha have been sent here to rest and relax. Instead they find that their mate is very different from what they might have expected. Sharks don't usually have mates, and as a coyote shifter, Martha was definitely unexpected! Martha was also widowed after 30 years of marriage , so she really wasn't expecting him!
Watching them get to know each other and try to figure out how they could manage to stay together was fascinating. This story has great characters, interesting dilemmas, some steamy scenes and some chuckles. I guess I will have to get the Shifting Sands stories while I wait for Hugh's book and then Ash's book.
