Ten years after disappearing from Antietam, Maryland, the bad boy Rafe MacKade has come home. Cleaned up and successful now—though still dangerously good-looking—Rafe’s return sets tongues wagging. But Rafe is not going to let a few gossips stop him from his dream. With the help of Regan Jones, who owns the local antique shop, he is restoring the old Barlow house into an inn. Working in such close quarters has Regan struggling to resist Rafe’s charms. Though she claims she doesn’t want to get involved with a rebel, Rafe’s pretty sure that her reaction to their sizzling kisses suggests otherwise…
Nora Roberts is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than 200 novels, including Hideaway, Under Currents, Come Sundown, The Awakening, Legacy, and coming in November 2021 -- The Becoming -- the second book in The Dragon Heart Legacy. She is also the author of the futuristic suspense In Death series written under the pen name J.D. Robb. There are more than 500 million copies of her books in print.
This was the greatest, sweetest and loveliest book ever. It might be short but in this case it worked just fine. Seriously don't stop reading this book just because it's shorter than most of NR's books because this one is a really outstanding read. I haven't read much from this author, only her In Death series and her In the Garden trilogy ... I'm sorry to mention that while I like her In Death series, I didn't enjoy that much the other one. And eventually I got a bit bored of the In Death series because it was more of the same (although I know I must give the series another try because I really enjoyed the books I read in it).Well I'm glad I still tried this one because I had an amazing time. I had been reading some books I didn't really enjoy that much so I started reading less and less. I thought I was getting bored of reading.... which for me that is something that makes no sense at all as I have been reading a book every 2 days for 2 years now, LOL. Then I switched to this book and couldn't put it down. What a read! I really recommend this book.
We have a really cute romance going on here. we have a guy who nobody gave credit while young as he was the "bad boy" of a very small town. He goes away for 10 years and comes back proving everybody wrong, with a very steady job and a change on his attitude. He still is that sexy bad boy though, the one everybody loved to talk about, the one all mothers tried to hide their young daughters from and the one all the guys never gave their back to, but now he is more mature and knows his place in life, what he wants from it. Then we have a girl who came 3 years before now to town and opened a store which sells antiques. It only takes one look to know they are attracted to each other. But the romance develops nicely as it takes them time to get to know each other. This is not one of those lame plot-less romances, even though the book is short. I swear I felt I got to know the characters much more than in many other longer books I've read.
Can't wait to start the next. Welcome to a series of 4 HOT brothers, a book about each. 4 sexy, alpha and ALL MEN. Guys ... give this series a try.
I really enjoyed this story! There's some drama, romance, tension, and lots of passion. Antietam is an exciting place to live, what with all those McKade brothers hanging around, and I'm looking forward to reading more.
I have yet to find a Nora Roberts book I can finish. My library had all four of this series and I checked them all out, thinking I could read a story arc and maybe appreciate this author.
So - the mother has just died. The teenage brothers are grieving in their own way. The eldest, this hero, solves his problems by getting into a bar fight and leaving town. It's okay - the guy totally deserved it since he beats his wife. WTH?
Fast forward ten years bad boy returns and finds himself in an antiques store run by the heroine. He's bought the local haunted house and he's going to fix it up as a bed and breakfast and he wants the heroine's help furnishing it.
I could practically smell the potpourri. Once I felt those walls of bric-a-brac closing in, I had to nope out. Plus the battered wife is still with hubby, but she has two kids now. Hero is just going to be her protector/mansplainer isn't he?
Are all of her books like this? I hated the pouty hero and the guarded heroine and the small town gossipy tone.
Maybe I'm just not the right reader. If you have any NR suggestions, let me know. I dislike romantic suspense, so that should filter out quite a few titles.
I really didn't like this old (1995) Nora Roberts, which bums me out to no end because Nora Roberts wrote one of my favorite reads of 2015, The Witness.
This book felt alpha male in a way that borders on forceful and rape-y. I didn't like Rafe as a character, not AT ALL. This book also had a ton of head-hopping, which confused me, especially in audiobook format.
The audio narration was not my style. Luke Daniels over-acted and sounded just plain silly, like he was narrating an old-school western. It was an awful fit for the story.
The MacKade Brothers Looking for Trouble-and Always finding it. Now they are on a collision course with love.
*** What a wonderful start to the saga about the irresistible MacKade brothers!
The whole town is buzzing over Rafe MacKade`s return, the most rough and rebellious of the MacKade brothers. He is the man everyone thought would end up behind bars but has instead become an excellent businessman and made a name out of himself. But the return to Antietam becomes so much more than he bargained for…when he falls madly in love with the mighty Regan Bishop.
I have wanted to read these books for ages, and now when i have finished this i just can`t fully comprehend how Nora Roberts manages to make me fall in love with the characters, the romance and the busy Town.Loved every page of this books, and that Roberts wrote it quite differently in that it was more plot driven than character driven.Rafe MacKade is a charming, dangerous and sexy hero...a bad boy that gets tamed in this wonderful tale of heartbreak, realization, fear and the wonder of passion and first love.I love the scene where Regan goes into the bar with a red tight skirt that made EVERYONE including Rafe`s Brothers gawk at her.In my head i heard the song "Sexy Mama.." during that scene!LOL,i just love her spine for that!
I am looking forward to Jared`s,Devin and Shane`s stories.Oh,it will be so much fun!
Reading this book was like watching a match of ping pong. On the left was Rafe and on the right was Regan. And I was the one who was conficted. The action of the book flew by me. I started this book a few hours ago and it caught me! I mean... I don't even know how I read it so fast. I just wanted to read another page, another chapter, without figuring out that I was approaching the end of the book. It was that good! I love it when the main characters are in a conflict almost all the time. It makes the story more provocative. And this one, certainty was an alpha male and female kind of situation with strong opinions and reckless actions. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I don't know how Nora Roberts does it. She might be a witch. This book was published in 1995 and it is still great! The MacKade brothers were trouble. Rafe was the worse. After his mother died Rafe left the small town to make his fortune. Ten years later he returns. He buys the old haunted house to turn it into a B&B. He also meets Regan. She sells antiques. Romance ensues with the kind of passion Nora excels at writing. Excellent book!! 😁
Frankly, the day I have the sales record and the fanbase that Nora Roberts has, will be the day I criticize her books. Though this book felt sort of "formulaic", it was a consistent read. When I pick up a Nora Roberts book, I expect to be 1.) Entertained; 2.) I expect lots of romance and heat (not overly hot...just hot. Romance readers will understand what I'm saying.), 3.) I expect the characters to fall in love despite the fact they never expected to, and 4.) I expect a H.E.A. (Because I am a giant sucker for a happy ever after.) Nora Robert's books always deliver. I repeat: They always deliver. Was I moved to tears? No. Not this time. Was I rolling on the floor with laughter? Not so much. Was I on the edge of my seat wondering when I could get back to my book? Not as much as I was with other NR books. However, this book delivered. I read it. I was satisfied after I was done. We all win. :
"The return of Rafe Mackade" is the first in the Mackade brother series. Years ago, second of the four MacKade brothers, the notorious Rafe left town when his parents passed away and it had nothing more to offer him. Going to the city, he made money, helped his brothers, and returned years later as the owner of a successful construction company. Coming back, one of the first thing he notices is the antique shop owner, pretty, independent Regan- and he relentlessly pursues her. I enjoyed their slow burn chemistry; and the supporting story of Cassie and Dev. Now the reason this story gets not so good stars is - I find it creepy when heroines date brothers - I am all for feminism and independence but Regan came out annoying. She was deliberately hurtful to Rafe a couple of times. I did enjoy the haunted manor and the ghost- creepy vibe+ angst. Safe-ish 2.5/5
This book was a little problematic, but mostly because of Rafe's characterization. Regan is awesome, though her interactions with Rafe are a little too subtly drawn. Which is part of the problem with Rafe's characterization, really. You see, Rafe is one of those mostly inarticulate men who expresses himself physically—often violently in contexts with other men (say, his brothers). He isn't mean, vicious, or uncontrolled, but it'd be easy to read him as dangerous if you aren't careful. Unfortunately, Rafe's own internal monologue doesn't clue the reader in very well and neither does Regan's. I spent the first half of the novel wondering if Regan was a moron for putting up with him. Only gradually did I begin picking up the cues that she trusted him because of his actions and bearing rather than his bumbling dialogue (appropriately bumbling, he's that kind of guy) and internal uncertainty.
That's a really subtle thing to pull off and Roberts only does so partially successfully in the novel. At heart Rafe is one of my favorite kind of romantic heroes—strong, kind, protective and capable. But that's buried under a lot of baggage and self-doubt that leads him to wallow in anger and repressed violence a lot of the time and that's decidedly unattractive. Regan sees through that more or less immediately, but not explicitly leaving my own understanding of his character lagging significantly behind her own. And that's uncomfortable reading.
The book is mid 90s and is better than most of those from that era in story, but it's one of her less successful stabs at characterization. I liked it in the end, but it was tough going for a while, there.
A note about Steamy: Good steam level for such a short novel. One or two explicit scenes that weren't terribly long.
Oh, wow. No matter the "age of material", Nora Roberts simply never disappoints. I don't know how the woman did it/does it/will probably continue doing it, but she always delivers. (I found that the stories by her that didn't really "sing" to me were just read at inopportune moments.)
And this little, ole gem was no different. With just the right amount of romance, suspense, family, and friends, and a haunted house thrown into the mix, this was a winner the moment I picked it up. Wonderful characterization, just the right touch of wilderness and darkness in Rafe, and annoying primness in Regan, great pacing, a little danger thrown in with an abusive bastard, three additional MacKade brothers that were just itching to tell their stories (and I can't wait to read them)...And the smokin' hot sex scenes written the way Ms. Roberts does—nothing explicit, but packing a sensual punch that always leaves me reeling.
A hunted bed and breakfast in a small town with a bunch of hot brothers ? It sounds so familiar! Oh yes Nora Roberts wrote it again in 2011 The Next Always . I liked this one better!
Such an innocent looking book cover...how wonderfully deceiving :3 It's your typical perfect polished girl falling for the town bad boy, but who doesn't love that?
Rafe MacKade was the town rebel and trouble maker along with his 3 brothers, Shane, Jared and Devin, he leaves his home town searching for something has not too sure of, and doesn't return for 10years.
Regan is an anquites seller and has lived in Rafes hometown for 3 years when he moves back, the instant they meet there's sparks and this book follows them on their "romantic" journey of falling for each other...and then putting pride aside so they can finally admit their feelings to one another. It's a cliche little book, but I like reading about bad boys :) I prefer the nice guys, but the bad ones are fun to read about ;D
This is the first book in a quartet that comes highly recommended by Lady Vale (and most of my other friends who have read it have loved it too). And no one writes contemporary romance quite like Nora Roberts. So with these two things in mind, I was sure I was going to love the book/series. Things didn’t happen quite like I planned.
I haven’t read a contemporary romance for some time, and it took a while, but Nora Roberts sucked me into the fabric of her story and made me care about what was going to happen to all four of the Mackade brothers. So I know that I am going to read all their stories. Unfortunately, Regan and Rafe were not my favorite characters, even in their own story. Regan was so concerned by not being defined by her mother’s neediness/dependency on her dad that she defined herself in another way – the opposite of her mother: I don’t need help from anybody. It was annoying. Rafe, was way too “me man, you woman” for my tastes, especially in a contemporary. Mebbe in a parallel/fantasy world, it would have worked well (as it usually does), but not in a contemporary. I was not impressed with either one of them. Hopefully the other three brothers are not as unnecessarily “macho”(hah!n ot quite) as Rafe, and their heroines are not as annoying as Regan.
Just visiting one of my beloved books - now re-reading in ebook version. Like the cover.

Another brotherhood storyline of Ms. Roberts that I like. Typical badass brothers; enjoys fist fights, cusses like it's the only language, loves like a maniac.
So this landed on my 'fave' list too. But what makes it differ from the other badass books of Nora Roberts? For one, they were farmers. Not a usual pick as occupation for alpha male characters. And two, the author put a 'ghostly' twist. Imagine, badass and ghost in a sentence. It would make you think - bulging biceps screaming at the top of their lungs upon seeing a ghost in a haunted house. Hah!
My favorite Mackade is Rafe. And I love the part when Regan put on a stretchy skirt and hauled her ass at the bar where Rafe and his brothers were drinking and playing pool. It was hilarious!
Nora Roberts is definitely one of my go-to authors for feel-good novels. And I must say she's a reliable one for that.
The first in a series about the MacKade brothers of Antietam, MD. After their mother dies Rafe leaves town, knowing he cant stay or his life will be a waste. Ten years later he has returned having made his money in real estate and with plenty of sweat equity.
Regan Jones has left the big city to find what she is looking for - a life. She owns the antique store and helps Rafe fulfill his dream of restoring the scary mansion on the edge of the battlefield from the Civil War conflict named for the town.
I love stories with lots of brothers - they mix it up, beat on and harass each other but at the end of the day - they always have each other's backs. This series is just so.
I love those series about a little town, everybody with a history known by everyone, LOL.
In this first book we meet Rake McKade, gone away for a long time and just come back. He's a very sweet and caring hero, trying to be hard but he has a very romantic heart. She's sassy and strong and she knows what she wants. So, he capitulated with grace. In the background there's this haunted house, bought by Rafe with ghosts and stories.
This is my second Nora Roberts book and I have to say, I enjoyed the story but not the delivery. Maybe it was just how Regan and Rafe played games and that just started to bother me.
I'm interested in Regan's friend Cassie and how she might play into the series.
I really enjoy Nora Roberts' writing and this quartet is one of my favorites. I think I have read them at least 15 times and I will continue to re-read them :)
I like the small town, but neither of the characters meant all that much to me. Rafe is a little too angry and Regan was just... eh. Hoping I'll like the other books/brothers/heroines more, because I do enjoy the atmosphere.
The Return of Rafe MacKade was a fantastic read featuring a romance between the town's returning bad boy and the woman he hires to help him with a project.
After the death of his mother ten years ago, Rafe MacKade left town and has only returned sparingly in the years since. With plans to renovate a local property and open a bed-and-breakfast in town, Rafe makes the decision to finally return home. In order to get the B&B up and running, Rafe recruits antique shop owner Regan Bishop to find pieces to fill the house. Working together in such close quarters has Rafe and Regan struggling with the attraction that's building between them. Despite wanting to keep their relationship professional, Regan finds herself falling for the last man she expected.
The MacKade brothers have always been the bad boys of the town with Rafe considered the worst of the bunch. I enjoyed the relationship between the brothers and how close they all were. After leaving town Rafe began working in construction and worked his way up to owning his own company. Regan moved to town three years before Rafe returns home to open her antique store. Regan is quite knowledgeable about her work and is great at what she does. She developed a great friendship with Cassie over the years and I enjoyed the interactions between those two.
The attraction between Rafe and Regan developed very quickly and they had great chemistry. Rafe is very direct about his interest in Regan which I appreciated. Regan, while also interested in Rafe, is more apprehensive about starting any kind of relationship with him. I enjoyed the back and forth while they worked out how to approach any kind of relationship between them. While they figure out their personal relationship, their professional one is going well. Regan knows exactly what Rafe is going for with the B&B and does a great job finding pieces that work for that vision. When their personal relationship does progress, it's very well done and I was happy with how the couple worked out their issues.
Overall The Return of Rafe MacKade was a great start to the series and I'm looking forward to picking up the next book in the series, The Pride of Jared MacKade, soon.
Enjoyable romance from Nora Roberts. I almost always am a sucker for a family-related series. This one includes four brothers, the MacKade boys. Gorgeous bad boys - each and every one in his own right. Rafe left town ten years ago. Now he's back and is going to prove something to the town who always thought he would end up in jail or dead. And along comes a beautiful antique dealer and reeks havoc on Rafe's plans. There's a haunted house involved, a lot of humorous dialogue, a wonderful romance, and hopefully the set up for another brother and his HEA. Although not the best of Nora Roberts, certainly a fun and delightful reading experience.
Short and sweet. A simple story of two people who meet and fall in love with a few miscommunication issues along the way. Loved the interaction with his brothers. And I'm looking forward to reading their stories.
Pretty short cont romance. Not my cup, as there's no plot except boy meets girl. Boring really. And I don't find attractive that kind of male behaviour. I call it predatory and in your face. If I am working with you it's not acceptable.
