Scotland Yard has been destroyed and even worse is to come...
London is faced with the greatest terrorist outrage it has ever experienced when Scotland Yard and much of its surroundings are reduced to rubble. With hundreds dead, detectives are forced to confront the fact that somewhere in their midst, at the very heart of their team, there is a traitor. A deeply hidden agent is working against them and just three senior detectives are privy to the secret - with the clock ticking against them to neutralise him or her before a further outrage occurs that will dwarf anything that the world has yet seen.
But nothing is as it seems, and as the scene shifts from London to the USA and then to Paris and the hidden workings of the DGSE, the French secret service, a complex plan is exposed, involving those at the heart of government, that will shatter the world order that has existed for almost a century. Thereafter, against the background of mass migration in Europe, a complex story emerges linking Nazi-occupied France in 1943 and London in the near future; and from Beirut in 1982 to the plains of Kansas and the suburbs of Paris, as a conspiracy unfolds that will change history and alter the lives of millions. As the end-game is played out during the preparations of the coronation ceremony of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey, life or death for millions hangs in the balance.
The story is set in the very near future, where Elizabeth II has died and her son is about to be crowned King Charles III.
From out of apparently nowhere, brilliantly-executed terrorist attacks occur, with not the slightest whisper to any of the security services. Scotland Yard is destroyed and in the following aftermath, many of the assisting emergency service workers are also callously killed. Outrages also happen in the USA and thousands of citizens are wiped out there.
As the intelligence services re-group, what becomes clear is that somewhere in the British services there is a mole who is constantly one step ahead.
As the scene moves between London, USA and France, a plot is unveiled of immense and seemingly unstoppable proportions, such that the whole landscape of the world could be changed.
David Gilbertson has written a great and politically topical thriller. The plot rumbles relentlessly on like a locomotive out of control and the main characters are big, bold and often bad. It is clear that the author who has spent his life in the police service, latterly in Counter Terrorism, has done a good job to transfer his knowledge in the field and put pen to paper to come up with this excellent book.
Why then only 4 stars? It seems that the author decided not to have his manuscript proof-read and that was a big mistake. The book is littered with errors, such that it spoils the reading and what potentially, should be a 5-star review. Apostrophes are thrown in everywhere – Euro’s, own’s, it’s, and even driver’s’! Harley Davidson slips the second ‘d’, ‘discrete’ is constantly used instead of ‘discreet’ and even ‘their’ instead of ‘they’re’ occurs. Please Mr Gilbertson, if you come up with another novel, and I hope you do, make sure you get it proof-read.
