Rate this book
Życie i czasy Sknerusa McKwacza w wyjątkowym wydaniu.

Christmas in Bear Mountain
Only A Poor Old Man

A

A
A
******************************************

The Luminaries

That is far beyond a comic or graphic novel, as they call them nowadays, this is art, subtility, irony, reflection and wisdom. A masterpiece of one of the greatest comic artists and writers of all time. All the subtle social critic, the innuendos, the background events. The ingenuity to fit both the situational and superficial humor for kids and the deeper, hidden messages for the adults. A mixture of real events and persons with fiction, an appraisal of the industrial age and capitalism, a character reminiscing about himself, ethic questions and the relativity of good and evil. An allegory about the worth and meaning of money, friendship, love and the history of mankind.

I could go on like that, so please just read it! It has nothing to do with average Disney cliches and downplaying of controversial topics, it is pure and distilled soul and brain food. I guess I have read it already 3 to 4 times over the years and still find new aspects in it, like elements of stories hidden in other stories and extreme continuity, coherence and consequence. And, as if it couldn´t get even better, Don Rosa is so modest to say that he finds his work average. Just wow man.

This is not just the best comic book ever written, it is a profound literary masterpiece.

Courtesy of Tuomas Holopainen, frontman of Nightwish, it now also has its own accompanying music album, which spectacularly lives up to the book itself.

This collection remains one of my favorite Disney comics, ever since reading it in Arabic in Mickey magazine when I was a kid, to re-reading it (along with some of the unpublished chapters in the companion), I consider it to be one of my all-time favorite comic books.

The reason I am writing this now is:

The release of a music album (by Nightwish keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen) which is inspired by that very same comic and its character.

I only hope (I wish) this would spark some renewed interest in the collection that would trigger a reprint, because the cheapest you can find this now is at $120!!

Maybe, someday...

I grew up reading Disney's comics, and one thing I like about how Disney handles their comic authors - although they may not write down their names or sign their work - is that the authors have the freedom of depicting Disney's characters quite freely. In the case of Uncle Scrooge, there are some authors who portray him as a real evil, greedy capitalist; while some others take another approach, showing Scrooge as a kindhearted duck who doesn't want to show his generosity, afraid of people taking advantages of him.

The authors are also free to write down the kind of story they like best and employ their own style; thus we have dark, psychological stories of Mickey; lighthearted, family-mouse Mickey; private eye Mickey; adventurous Mickey, etc.

With this liberty, Eisner Award-winner Don Rosa could create a masterpiece, a work that will always be remembered: an effort not only to construct Uncle Scrooge's past, but also the long history of the McDuck family, leading all the way to Donald and his nephews.

Blending history and pure fiction, featuring the likes of Theodore Roosevelt, Geronimo and other real-life characters, this book accompanies us through a journey as a witness to the making of modern America and the rise of capitalism there in the 19th and early 20th century - and how the piles of money don't really make Scrooge really happy in the end. So in the twelfth episode, the closing chapter of the epic, a clever take on The Christmas Carol (you know, Scrooge and all that...), the last of the McDucks learns once again of how important family is to him.

This is an ambitious work, diving deep into the characters of Scrooge and his family, but the results leave you ultra-satisfied yet craving for more. Even Mickey, the icon of the Disney kingdom, doesn't have a family history as complete as this.

There's no way to sugarcoat this: you need to read this. You don't have to like comics, or the Duck family, or Disney. This is a wonderful piece of storytelling in its own right. Basically iconic. Do yourself a favour, friend.

(I'm very proud to own an actual hardcover of this, although, to be precise, mine is the translated Greek edition)

"Scrooge was never interested in what money could buy (obviously, since he never spends it!) and never lost sight of his 'Rosebud' -- that it's the memories and personal achievements behind his fortune that give it value in his life. And yet, the burden of protecting his fortune from the greedy hands of those who want it for all the wrong reasons will always prevent him from being as content as his nephew Donald, for whom a simple ice cream soda is complete happiness."

Il talento non esiste, capitano! Esistono soltanto l'ispirazione e l'ambizione!

E quanta ambizione ci mostra, zio Paperone! Quanta ispirazione ci lascia...

An absolutely amazing adventure story in its own right - tense, exciting, gripping, and hilarious - not even the slightest bit deterred by its Disney origins or its main characters being cartoon animals.

"Life is like a hurricane, here in Duckburg. Race cars, lasers, aeroplanes - it's a duck blur!"

If you have no idea what I'm talking about then YOU HAVE NOT LIVED!! DuckTales happened to be my THE most favourite show on TV as a kid. I loved it then and I love it now. So you can imagine my delight when I found this little treasure.

This book focuses more on Scrooge McDuck and gives us a detailed insight into his past by telling the tale of how Scrooge came to be the richest duck in the world (his wealth amounts to five multiplujillion, nine impossibidillion, seven fantasticatrillion dollars and sixteen cents)

It's beautifully illustrated and a complete laugh-riot. Keep an eye out for Scrooge's sister, Hortense - Donald's mum - later on in the book. You can definitely see the family resemblance there! You'll run into many familiar characters like Donald and the triplets, Glomgold, Goldie, Magica De Spell and even the Beagle Boys(or their ancestors, at least)!. The book leaves you begging for the good ol' 90's again.

A MUST-READ for any hardcore DuckTales fan!

As kids my brother and I collected comic books. One day we found a HUGE box of old comics at a swap meet, which we promptly convinced our parents to buy. When we got home we divided up our loot Jeffy (my brother) got the Spiderman, X-men,and Fantastic Four, while I got the Batman, Ironman and Daredevil, and we divided up the rest of the superheros Jeffy took most of the Marvel stuff because we liked them the best(thats the way older brothers are) and I got the D.C. ultimatly we were both happy. There was however still a large pile of leftover stuff that neither one us wanted like Richie Rich, Archie Comics, Disney, and all the different war comics you could ever want. Unable to just let them go I took them and stuck them in the back of my collection. Well monthes passed and I read all my superhero stuff and my brothers (despite his protest over my tresapassing into his collection) and suddenly it was over I had gone through the aforethought endless supply of funny books, it was devastating in some small way. Unable to cope with my loss I reluctantly made my way to that box with all the "junk" in it. I began with the war comics Sgt. Rock, The Unknown Soldier, The Losers, Blackhawk, etc. they were at least books about war. Turns out they were quite good (but thats another review for another day) but all too soon I had gone through them all. I pressed on. Archie Comics were next and again I was pleasantly surprised. Next was Ritchie Rich, Casper The Friendly Ghost, etc. these were O.K., better than I expected but I knew I had reached the bottem of the barrel. All that was left to quell my appetite was the Disney Comics. Ah the Disney Comics they were at the bottem of my bottem pile of comics and on the bottem of the Disney pile lay Uncle Scrooge I had never even heard of Uncle Scrooge. But alas like so many times in life theese unwanted, unread, books turned out to be some of the best stuff I have ever read. To this day I've found few others as good. Of course they were written by Carl Barks an underapperciated genius famous only in comic book lore, but a genius none the less.
The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck was not written by Carl Barks, but by a fellow who went to great GREAT lengths to pay homage to the legend that was Carl Barks (Kino Don Rosa). I think he did a fantastic job.
I would recomend Uncle Scrooge to anyone, and being married to a teacher makes me realize what an important tool they could be for anyone who is trying to make history come alive and be relevant for a younger audience.
I usally try to keep theese reviews short (I am a big believer in brevity) but I guess I got a little nostalgic here, I apologize.

Scrooge McDuck, tougher than the toughies, and sharper than the sharpies , is the best duck of them all. Don Rosa tells the epic story of his adventurous life, and manages to create a determined, honest (most of the time), well-crafted character, who can in many ways be an inspiration. Try hard and fail, and then try harder and fail again and again, but never give up, until you are the richest man in the world. Nah, just kidding. But Scrooge’s journey is indeed a reminder that we should believe in our dreams and chase them, even when they seem impossible to catch. Sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, Don Rosa’s take on the life of this iconic duck, has a lot more to offer than just a few laughs.

Many years has passed since the last time I read Scrooge McDuck's stories and was delighted when I found this comic book. It was an opportunity to read a compelling version of his life, of the origin of his wealth, but also to see how the character has changed and what he has sacrificed to achieve success.

The book is divided into chapters, everyone telling a different adventure during the life of Scrooge, whose exploits are often intertwined with historical events and characters that really existed. They are funny stories for all ages, with a basic moral, but also touching and sometimes a little sad.

A splendid Grahic Novel that I recommend to all lovers of the character.

A pleasant discovery: reading the reviews I found that Tuomas Holopainen, frontman of Nightwish (one of my favorite bands), also wrote an album based on this comic. I can't wait to listen to it!!!

So incredibly good!

I've always liked Scrooge McDuck, mostly because of Duck Tales. So when I saw he had his own biography comic books, I was all for it. The thing I wasn't expecting was for them to be really, REALLY good!

Scrooge wasn't always rich, in fact he was really poor. And he worked for everything he got. The first few stories are awesome as they travel through riverboating to cowboys in the West to prospecting across the world. The interesting thing about the stories is that Scrooge actually fails! A lot! I think that's what endeared him to me so much was that he not only built an empire on hard work, but after multiple attempts. Granted, all the backstabbing and betrayal throughout the years from the people around him hardened him to the scroogey Scrooge his is, but we all know how that ended up when his triplet nephews showed up. I was just impressed with the storytelling, it doesn't seem like the kind of books that would be that quality, but it really is.

And the art is pretty fantastic. Don Rosa puts an insane amount of detail in his books. There's the main story going on on every page, but there are at least 3 or more gags going on in the background per page as well. You have to really look or you'll miss half the jokes! And any wide scene deserves scrutiny, because all those little people are each doing unique things. Good stuff.

I would own this book in a second, but because of its age and apparent rarity, I can't shell out the $100 or more that vendors want for it. That's a shame because it's a quality read.

If you can find it (I read it from the library, only one in the network had it and it was almost destroyed), read it. You'll be surprised how good it is!

On huippua päästä lukemaan noita näin syntyi -tarinoita.

Although willful to get my hands on any fresh FB release containing Carl Barks' Duck stories that I adored in my childhood, I am sort of ashamed to admit that I hadn't had any major interest in Don Rosa's stories, until I stumbled over the so-called "Grande Epopee de Picsou". Yeps, that's the French version of Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. Took a few really good looks, got really excited, started browsing for this to order it.
Tough luck - I got pretty late, and nowadays if you have a really strong heart, like me, you might see prices such as 1,700$ raised for the original English version on the Amazon, and though cardiac arrest won't catch you in its grip, you'll probably have your eyes rolling like I had. Neither the Like News and other used types are particularly cheap, they get well around 100$. So I started thinking and re-thinking whether I should get the French version for 20 something euros. Being an English addict, I had big hesitations, but finally I concluded that it was Rosa's art and the characters that interested me most.
And, boy, did I make a good choice. Now I have this thingy in French, but due to a satisfying translation, I have no problems in understanding the text. What about the content itself, the original core? Simply stated: this is pure CREAM. With capital letters as big as ole Scroogey's money bin. Dona's art is expressive, graceful, funny and everything good that Carl Barks' art was, with a touch of Elderesque background gagologic wizardry, albeit more restrained. Couldn't find any flaws even if I tried, and I certainly got so immersed in the Duck universe that I wouldn't do that at all.
Aside from the brilliant visuals, the narrations and characterizations are remarkably sturdy. This is no cheap timekiller, its grandeur reminds me strongly of what Hemingway said - you don't need grand words to convey grand feelings. Each story got me reading avidly, each page requests several minutes for its full bouquet to take over the senses, and the ending of the book is one of the most revealing and beautiful endings possible. It summarizes the essence of Scrooge McDuck's apparent worship of money - it is not a love of money that burns inside Scrooge, but a love of all the things that his past provided him with, each cent being a tribute that he paid to those who raised him and to his own capacity of going the right way, most often not the easy one. After a youth full of adventure, challenges and gain, Scrooge chooses to keep away from the rest of the world and rejects even those of his kin, yet despite the ridiculously high standards that he imposed to himself and therefore made him so allergic to the others, he cherishes the memories that all that cold money holds. He might be alienated, but he will never forget. A bittersweet ending that left me almost sobbing.

If you are no big spender, you might consider buying the cheaper French version while still available. It makes French so much more worth studying. But if you want the English version, you'll probably have to spare some thick dough and then slam the piggy bank really hard. Still, I cannot imagine someone regretting such a buy. One of the great classics of comics of all times, and Barks' shadow shines all over the place.

Scrooge McDuck, the grumpy old businessman, who possesess more wealth than anyone could ever imagine and who happens to be Donald Duck's uncle. That's all, right?

Of course not! And we have to thank Carl Barks -to begin with- and Don Rosa for adding more to the shallow statement above.

The little poor boy from Scotland, who started off from polishing shoes and earned his first dime from a local worker (well, not quite from a local worker, as we learn in one of the lost episodes, but I'm hearing the "spoiler alert" bells ringing, so I'm dropping this part), went on to become the richest duck in the world. However, as we learn by reading Don Rosa's masterpiece, it's not the money that makes Scrooge one of the richest heroes in the history of comics. It's the tremendous amount of experience he gained through the places he visited, the people he met and the decisions he had to make.

He became the "Terror of Transvaal" and the "King of Klondike", he got to befriend Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt himself and, while still young and poor, he chose to respect a local cult in Australia over becoming rich in no time, by stealing an artefact no one would notice was missing, until it was way too late.

Ultimately, Scrooge is not so complex a character. He craves money as much as he craves adventure, he enjoys working hard to succeed and he holds family in the highest esteem, even though he often seems to get angry at his nephew's, Donald, laziness, and threatens to disinherit him, if he doesn't start taking life more seriously.

But how he came to this point? Which events shaped him into the rigid yet pure-hearted man (er... duck, I mean) he is today? Which are the memories he cherishes and allows to drown him in an ocean of sweet nostalgia?

The answers to all these questions lie within the pages of this epic comic book. Based on Carl Barks' hilarious and exciting tales and infiltrated with Don Rosa's remarkable narrative and drawing talent, the "Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck" sheds light to the story of one of the most beloved paper heroes of all time. And it's totally worth every single second spent to read it as thoroughly as possible.

A grand and well crafted view of Scrooge McDucks life and adventures.

I've never been much of an "all ages" type of book reader. Sure, every now and again Ill pick up something that is more funny or light in tone, but I wouldn't say that that is my "go to" type of story. So when I saw this was next on my list of stuff to read, I hesitated... and maybe even rolled my eyes a bit.

But I was very wrong to judge a book by its cover. What this book is, besides a remarkably well written and very lively and interesting biography of fictional character, is a masterclass in execution of comics as a medium. I was impressed not only by the writing and art of Don Rosa, but also of how well he handles the comics format to flawlessly tell this story. Each scene transitions into the other beautifully, there are moments where no dialogue is used but instead Rosa lets the art tell the story, and the attention to detail heighten the overall quality of the book tremendously. From the background gags, to the "callbacks" to earlier stories, to the well rounded and well earned "to be continued" implied at the end, it all is a testament to a master of his craft, Don Rosa.

And yes, there are times where the story gets into some pretty cartoon level of comedy, which is definitely funny, but the book is about so much more. It touches on historical events, and takes us through a timeline of not only Scrooge McDuck, but also of the world as well... well loosely anyways. The art at times is breathtaking as well, which I was not at all ready for.

I think this was a wonderfully fun book that has constant surprises around every corner. From the art to the pacing, to the plot, its all done really, really well and I'm glad to have given this a shot.
Highly recommended for fans of adventure books written and drawn by one of comics great creators.

Don Rosan Roope Ankan elämä ja teot- albumi menee oikeastaan jo klassikon puolelle. Voisinkohan ehkä saada tällä toukokuun klassikon luetuksi?

Oli hauska seurata kokonaisen albumin verran tunnetuimpia tarinoita Roope Ankan nuoruudesta. Muistin suurimman osan tarinoista, vaikka joitain kohtia ei albumissa ollutkaan. En tosin tiedä, onko Rosa kirjoittanut tarinan, jossa Kultu Kimallus yrittää kähveltää Roopen Hanhenmunahippua ja joutuu töihin Roopen kaivokselle.
Jotkut hahmot tunnisti ihan yhden tarinan lopussa, ja myöhemmin kävi ilmi notta kappas, oikeassahan minä olin. Esimerkkinä Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, jonka Roope jeesasi irti kivenlohkareen alta ja joka yritti selittää Roopelle, ettei raha tuo onnea. Turhaanpa yritti.

Jotkut Rosan hahmot on ihan mahtavia, kuten Hortensia McAnkka, Roopen tuittupäinen pikkusisko.
Silti Roope tituleeraa Mummoa siskoksi jossain sarjakuvassa. Serkuksi toisessa.

Esimerkiksi kaikki supersankarilehdet on jäänyt kokonaan lukematta.
