Return to Sarah's Valley is a follow-up story to Sarah's Valley, which was published in 2012 by the same author, Sharon Mierke. In Sarah's Valley, Patrick Smithson meets Frank Lawdry. Frank, who prefers his Abenaki name, Winnipesaukee, spends the night recalling his life story. He and his sister, Sarah, were left orphans when everyone on a wagon train died in a horrific tragedy. It was their story of survival. Return to Sarah's Valley continues where Sarah's Valley leaves off. Now an old man in his nineties, Patrick meets Michael Lawdry, one of Winnipesaukee's descendants, and tells him how two Lawdry men influenced his life. This is a story of life during the Great Depression, struggles and heartache, but also the deep love that a man has for one woman.
"I'm not sure when someone decides to become a writer. I was once asked why I started and I said, 'I was tired of reading so decided to start writing!' Some dream about it but never do it and others are foolish enough to try. I have always loved Daphne DuMaurier's quote: 'Writers should be read and not seen or heard.' I loved the thought of writing but having anonymity at the same time. I doubt that can be achieved in today's world. I write for the pleasure of writing and I share it because I hope others will find joy in reading it."
This book was just as good as Sarah's Valley. It was a other book by Sharon Mierke that you didn't want to put down until you finished reading it and then were sad when you saw the words "the end" . In return to Sarah's Valley you find out about Frank's life and what all he lived through during the depression. It is also a great love story and about what true love actually is. Would highly recommend this book after one reads Sarah's Valley first, you won't be disappointed.
Very good book and well written . The more I read Sharon Mierike’s books the more I want to read. She has a style all her own. It was interesting to read about how the school teachers back in the 1940 struggled . It brought back memories of the first school I attended in 1950. It was a one room school hose with a wood stove and yes, it had an outhouse. Great memories .
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the lives of the people who lived in the Appalachians. I especially enjoyed reading about how the young man became a teacher and how he improvised as his class size increased. I thought it was so good to see how neighbours helped each other in hard times.
This is the sequel to Sarah's Valley. I enjoyed this one even more than the first. The characters feel like family now, and it was heartwarming, even through tragedies, to follow them through several generations. The plot moves along swiftly. Only someone who has been a teacher could have written some of the descriptions for the teacher in the story. 'Nuf said. Enjoy!
This story, as well as Sarah's Valley, was extraordinary. They are both storhhies you cannot put down until finished. Unfortunately, I feel unsatisfied there was no closure with Toby. Did he become an RCMP? If so why didn't Mr. Smithson search for him? My only pet peeve. Great books and I will search for more of her books.
I know how the years can spread a lifetime into so many different parts. The story starts with two children that are left with only themselves to rely on and yet their history spans a hundred years. Their story is captivating and you will relish the coming pages as the hours fly by. I'm sure Toby makes it to the RCMP.
This book tells the story of the memories of a ninty plus year old òf a life of hardship, love, heartbreak, murder and friendship. I found it very interesting, being of the older generation? It was well written and was clean without any swearing or sexual scenes?
It started out good. I love her character development. But then it seemed to speed up to the ending, and left me wondering about what happened between the beginning and the end. Liked the first book better.
I have no hesitation in highly recommending this two book series. Loved the characters and their adventures and when the final “The End “ showed up I felt that all the characters had been fully developed and come to a satisfying place in time.
I well written interesting . Quick read historical fiction Read 2of Sharon Mierke books this sequel enjoyed them both giving them 5 stars Sara's valley and return to Sara's Valley.
Good 2 part series. Her books seem to hold my interest and I can usually read one in a couple days or less. Liked both these books pretty well have read several of her books so far
I think Sarah's Valley and Return to Sarah's Valley are 2 of the best I've read this year, and I've read almost 100. You can't stop thinking about the story. Very hard to stop reading. Absolutely wonderful.
Anyone wanting to feel the past needs to become engrossed in this series. The author describes not only the surroundings, but the characters you can "see" without overdosing the reader with description. Loved this series!
