The Power of Letting Go

Rate this book
'Life-changing' - Sara Makin, Founder & CEO of Makin Wellness

If you learn to let go,
your life will take off.

When you let go, you live intuitively. Everything flows, because you are no longer attached to things being a certain way, to being a certain person or always being right. What a relief. The irony is that when you feel stuck in any area of your life - career, relationships, purpose, health or money - letting go can seem very hard. You cling on for dear life just at the moment you need to take the leap.

In The Power of Letting Go, John Purkiss explains why we should let go and how we can do it, using proven techniques to make things happen.

The stages of letting
-Be Present and Enjoy Each Moment
-Let Go of the Thoughts that Keep You Stuck
-Let Go of the Pain that Runs Your Life
-Surrender and Tune into Something Far More Intelligent than Your Brain

Despite having studied and worked hard, I got completely stuck. Nothing in my life was working. Then I learned to meditate and the situation improved rapidly. Within six months I had a highly-paid job with one of the world's largest executive search (headhunting) firms.

I noticed that many of the people I met were trying to market themselves (to me) but didn't know how. Having become a partner, I co-founded a new firm and began writing books. The first was 'How To Be Headhunted'.

Most people are never headhunted. They get promoted, or answer an advertisement or find a job through personal contacts. Many people are self-employed. Some are non-executive directors, sitting on the boards of several companies. This led to my second book, 'Brand You', which is designed to help everyone to discover their purpose/mission and market themselves effectively.

In recent years I've been struck by how many people find life difficult. It's usually because they're trying to do everything through mental and physical effort - as I did. Fortunately, there's an alternative, which is much more productive and enjoyable. My new book is called 'The Power of Letting Go'. It was published in the UK and the USA in 2020, and has just been translated into Spanish.

From my rating, you can guess that i didn’t enjoy the content of this book.

First of all, let’s see the good bits:
• I liked the given exercises about letting go of past and worries about future. Sometimes, people can get trapped in this vicious cycle of being stuck with past feeling and see future only through this lens. so yes, i see the practical need in this.
• letting go of labels. absolutely true, even though categorization is one of the most important features of our brain (this is a part of people’s learning process, without it we would be just like any other animals), it is important to keep an open mind to people, experiences, life as a whole. there are always several perspectives on literally everything. people should learn how to accept it.

Now, to parts i didn’t liked:
• constant reminders about “force above us”. that this force, universe, god - call it anyway you wish - have the ultimate power over people’s lives. of course, it is author’s worldview, but he presents it as an ultimate truth, but there are no proofs to it. moreover, it is an ultimate topic of philosophy, but if we suggest that there is no “higher power”, what is it that guide us through life? answer to this, is we ourselves do this. there is no “plan” or “fate” that will magically work if we step down of our expectations. only other people with their decisions, which outcomes will affect us the same way our decisions affect other people’s life (“butterfly effect”). ultimately, the only thing we should learn is to accept, that it doesn’t matter how detailed plan we got, something won’t go the way we want it. and it is not destiny.
• intuition. more precise, that intuition is an answer for everything. i especially “liked” how author mentioned Myers-Briggs typology when talking about labels. true, it can be used by people just to create yet another categories for people in their lives. but there is so much more beneath these types - cognitive functions! this is what mbti is all about. learning how people perceive world around and how they do decisions on that information. i can go on for a long time about this topic, but if You want to learn about it more - just google. there are tons of information about that. ultimately, some people are better with real world - “sensors”, but other operate in abstract world - “intuitives”. i, having introverted intuition as the most used cognitive function, was laughing about hearing that intuition is an answer to everything, because for me it is fairly obvious it is not the case. both intuitive and sensing cognitive functions are need to be developed in order to operate properly in this world. answer is in balance: yes, sensors need to develop their intuition, but for intuitives it is vital to develop sensing, so we will have connection to a real world. i can say, that neglecting sensing function is super damaging for a person. yes, intuition will give you hunches and insights, but without having real world to lean on - it is useless (example: intuitive eating is useless for people with food addiction. as a person who have the last condition, my intuition can tell me that i need to eat properly and healthy, but with that it can make me eat big amounts of food (even if it is healthy, not having real-world moderation will make it unhealthy) or to eat something unhealthy and even binge. this is why i need sensing: to moderate what my intuition tells me.)
• us being only consciousness. no we are not. just as we are not only mind and body. this things work in a triad - taking away at least one of this elements, we cannot be considered as humans at all. person can go all consciousness and mind, but what will happen to the body? or if one neglects consciousness, all the work with mind and body will be useless. and in neglecting mind - ultimately, what that person will be good for? nothing. balance between everything is a key, you cannot just throw away one element and expect everything will be all right.

so, this is just my personal thoughts on what i saw and what i feel. if this book works for you - i am really glad that this is a case. unfortunately, it didn’t work for me the way i hoped it would. maybe because i have absolutely different experience, worldview and mental structure, not to mention i do not believe in an “ultimate force” or whatever. it doesn’t mean that one of us is right and other is wrong. no, this is just different perspectives (and i really see how his words can be true) and this is how things should be - not black and white, but “in-between” gray shades.

I really enjoyed this book. There are so many things I need to let go of to be able to achieve what I really want and to also realize I might not achieve them the way I plan. I’m a planner and get frustrated when it doesn’t go right. This book really helped me look at what holds me back and how to let go.
I think it will be one that I hold onto and keep practicing the exercises to continue a process that is so much healthier and healing.
The book already helped me while I was reading it. I had a day planned of everything I wanted to do and it turned into a disaster. But was it? I actually allowed myself to let go and go with the flow. I actually had a wonderful experience even though things didn’t go according to plan.

To be completely honest, I had a prejudgement towards the book thinking that it would be another self-help book that would give me a sense of bliss after reading but ends there. However, the book contained some insightful things, including things that we thought we knew but never really understood. I was going to give it 4 stars because the author constantly repeated some of the points however, I realised that it’s what makes the book such a seamless read. Overall, highly recommended and I am definitely trying out the exercises.

Although this book has some good points on how to find some inner peace, it’s just a handful of pages that repeat the same message over and over; let go of the things in life over which you have no control. I found it incredibly irritating that there was no evidence provided for any of the author’s ideas. His idea of evidence was anecdotal where he repeatedly said « just do this » and followed it up with « my friend did and the next day [insert desire manifesting into reality]. » I’m going to let go of this book.

This book is 90% about spirituality and meditation-like stuff, so you need to be very open-minded about these topics to enjoy the book.
For me as scientist it was simply exhausting. I´ll give a few of the mentioned journaling excercises a try, but most of the stuff mentioned didn´t fit for my life.
I was expecting something more psychological and less spiritual, so I´m pretty disappointed.
one of the things that disturbed me the most was the fact that, by word count, approx. the 3 contents (explanations, excercises and successfull examples) were distributed equally. I prefer books with less examples and more theory. The explanations of the practical excercises were not fully understandable for beginners like me.
Overall the book is something which was ok-ish to read once, but all I can put into practice from it are approx. 5 usefull journaling excercises.

TL;DR 'Complete' painful experiences by reliving them until they are not triggering pain points anymore. Let go of the stories you tell yourself about yourself and the world around you. They are holding you back from getting what you want.

I liked the ideas in this book, even if it had a lot of "And I learnt this from an esteemed Indian spiritual guide" going on. The exercises could have been fleshed out more with concrete examples. One of the exercises I found useful was the one about thinking what about a goal you want to achieve:

1. List down a goal you want to achieve
2. Immediately you will feel resistance with the reasons you can't achieve them. List those down too.
3. Analyze these reasons - usually they'll be irrational beliefs like "I'm not good at xxx", "If I couldn't do it before, why would I be able to do it now", etc.
4. Think about the source of these beliefs - they probably started with an instance/experience when you were younger where you were bad at xxx or when you failed at doing something.
5. Relive that painful experience of anger/failure/disappointment until it no longer hurts.
6. List the goal again, and repeat 2-5 until there is no more resistance.

Purkiss' point is that pain patterns reinforce each other until they become unconscious decision factors that hold you back from doing things you actually do want to do.

Another point he emphasizes is that you as a person is not a fixed entity. There is no quality about you that is fixed - you are not a nice person, a selfish person, a dependable person etc. No one is always nice. No one is always selfish. No one is always angry. No one is always kind.

To 'let go', you have to list down all these beliefs you have of yourself, and acknowledge that these 'fronts' are not always true. Sometimes I am kind. Sometimes I am strong. Sometimes I am selfish. It is exhausting having to present a cohesive front to the world. Letting go allows you to be who you are, as you change over time.

"It's better to be whole than to be good. Accept that you can be mean, be selfish, tell lies"

"It's better to be clear about what you want to happen and open minded about how it will happen. Allow things to happen in unexpected ways"

Simply horrible. The situations presented and anecdotes seem unrealistic and fantastical. I should've came to Goodreads before buying, lol.

The author walks you through the three key principles of releasing: letting go of thoughts, letting go of pain, and letting go completely. The most challenging part of the book - an action I am still working on doing - is the practice of completion. It calls for the reader to relive (not recall) core memories we’ve all carried into our present. It is TOUGH stuff but it’s The Work™️.

Looking forward to starting the book’s accompanying journal for deeper healing. Quick read but 1000% impactful - just make sure you roll up your sleeves and get to work on yourself. It’s a lifechanger!

Sure to become a classic – powerful gem delivers results quickly.
This book provides a powerful, crystal-clear and effective way to instantly shift anything in our life that has become stuck, bogged down or stagnant. With concise, deft, lucid writing and charming practical examples, the author has managed to condense 5,000 years of spiritual wisdom and a 100 years modern psychology into a straightforward system that works. I have read most of the classics of personal development and spirituality including Hawkins and Singer. However, I found a great deal in this presentation that was fresh, new and practical in this book. The processes are very quick and easy to do and immediately bring powerful results. Within 24 hours of applying the effective ideas and processes in this book, I am already seeing major positive changes in my career, outlook and relationships. If you are tired of churning away trying to make a big life change or to solve your problems, only to find the same situations endlessly repeating, this is the book for you. No fluff here. This book gets to the point and gets the job done so you can get on with living your best life. Can it really be this easy? Find out for yourself.

This is a great book if you are completely new to mindfulness and consciousness. It's a step by step guide to becoming present within your deepest being. Unfortunately there wasn't a lot of new info for me. One thing I did really like are the many journal prompts and meditation exercises, which are definitely useful for me. This book is perfect if you are new to this or looking for practical guidance into letting go.

Originally, I purchased this book to explore new perspectives in ways to let go and challenge previous events and feelings.

Admittedly, whilst reading the book, it was only brought to me consciously that I was proactively engaging myself in the exercises and thought processes that were being promoted in the text. However, other exercises that I hadn’t thought about before had prompted me to think about the pain associated with negative thoughts or assumptions that influence my current state.

My own key takeaway from this, is that there is practical application. Throughout this book, I found it to be very thought provoking as it allowed me to realise why I disliked some people, and enabling me to identify what characteristics I don’t like about them, and why.

Overall, a pretty decent quick read that offered a great handful of opportunities to identify, explore, and realise ways to let go.

I would have given a three, but it was a good meditation book for me in the shower, so a four. It helped me through some very dark days when I would just not want to do anything.

The methods to achieve goals you want was doable, but the author could have gone into more detail as to how your thoughts can change your life. I genuinely do feel and think about everything this book mentions and I am actually really grateful to have felt how calming this book sounds.

BIG AUDIOBOOK REC

I do believe this book is helpful and gives us good exercises that can be used in daily life. But by the end I felt like I needed to be reading this intermittently. It was almost such an onslaught of information that I was feeling bad that it wasn’t effective yet. That is not a reflection on the book at all but in fact my own experience from reading it. I think that this will help me with letting go of all my stressors and constant streams of thought in my current life in regards to my health, relationships, work and money. A lot to unpack but definitely positive for me.

Conceptually a good book breaking down letting go into logical parts that seem to be easily understood. As for practicality it is sort of similar to mainstream sort of “healing” book where the concept makes sense and seems profound but maybe not as realistic as it should have been. That being said, the concept and the logic of this book seems to be more spiritual so there was a couple of things I wasn’t too sure about.

this is not the type of book I feel like rating bc it’s not intended to be a literary masterpiece, it’s intended to help people. and it helped me! this did less teaching and more awakening for me. it made me realize the influx of negativity my mind experiences which hurts me, which I need to let go. I already feel better. Now I try to focus on my experiences in the present moments instead of fixating on a person or a goal, and it’s very relieving. I will try try try to be better!

I love it when I read a book and it’s like something I’ve never read before, pushing me to think in new ways.
This book encourages readers to embrace the art of surrendering control and I’d emphasise that this is not a one-time read but a guide to revisit repeatedly for meaningful implementation in life. I enjoyed the insightful reflections on being present and releasing expectations that can transform various aspects of life. Particularly impactful are Purkiss’ practical techniques for overcoming fear and letting go of limiting beliefs and judgements, which foster personal growth and inner peace, but this is something to be worked on in the long term - this book is not a quick fix.
A very good friend recommended this to me and I have already recommended it to several others.

“Instead of flowing with Existence, we fight it or try to control it. Instead of enjoying life, we keep getting stressed and frustrated. In our efforts to get what we want – and avoid what we don’t – we create conflict with other people and damage our environment.”

There are valuable tools in this book to help you live in the moment and relax. I would recommend.

Good foundational book for understanding how to be more present and good list of books in back. Categories are summarized nicely and exercises are highlighted so it’s easy to follow and refer back to. Found it a good refresher. Lacks depth, but then like I said I think it’s for someone who doesn’t know to much about the topic.

One meditation practice I found interesting was imagining giving all of your things away.
