What If It's True?: A Storyteller's Journey With Jesus

Rate this book
With the same depth, sensitivity, and emotion that has made his novels beloved to millions, Charles Martin helps us engage the fundamental principles of our faith in new and inspiring ways.

Years ago, Martin cracked open his Bible and began wrestling with a few fundamental questions. He asked, “What if every single word of Scripture is absolutely true and I can trust it? How do I respond? Something in me should change, but what? How?” This book is the result of that exploration.

Writing as our guide, he uses a storyteller’s imagination to illuminate key moments from the Scriptures, primarily from the life and ministry of Jesus. In addition, Martin shares key moments from his own journey as a disciple—and bondservant—of Christ and a mentor to others. The result is a striking exploration of truth that helps us not just think differently, but live differently. Today.

This book was part story format and part commentary. The author started the chapters with a scene from Scripture in which he filled out the details with speculation. He was pretty clear about what was directly from the Bible, what was his speculation, and what he based that speculation on. Many of the scenes were about the crucifixion or events leading up to the crucifixion, but one was based on a parable and another on an experience he had. After the scene, the author talked about what impresses him about how Jesus acted in that moment. He drew in Old Testament references and cultural background information that provided insight into the events. He ended each chapter with a long prayer about the theme he talked about in that chapter, like forgiveness.

While I liked the first half of the book, I had some problems starting in chapter 8. He's earnest and means well, but the focus of the book started to shift at that point. He urged Christians to repent for your ancestor's sins. While I can maybe see confessing (stating what is true, like "I and my ancestors have sinned against you, God"), I don't agree that people can repent (turn away from) sins committed by your ancestors unless you are also committing them. This is a very long chapter as he tries to convince people that his view is true, but I was not convinced. The next chapter centered around a semi-fictionalized conversation between him and God. Happily, he did get back to focusing on scenes from the Bible before the end.

I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through BookLook.com.

I was so excited when I saw that Charles Martin was writing a book diving into some essential questions in the Bible. He is such a talented author and I am blown away by this book. He is a gifted storyteller and he takes you on an incredible journey through stories unlike one I've never been through. He paints these pictures and brings these stories to life in a manner where you feel like you are standing in front of the cross weeping as Jesus takes His last breath. As a Christian, I think at some point we have all asked what if this is really true? What does that mean for me? Charles Martin dives into that question and helps dig your way through it. You will feel touched, inspired, in awe, you will feel closer to God and will have a stronger appreciation, love and respect for Jesus. He makes it very clear that he is not adding, taking away or changing scripture as it is written. This is how he envisions these stories unfolding, what he thinks the people were feeling. You will want to just drown yourself in the Bible going though this book. He recommends you have your Bible and a notebook to write your thoughts and feelings. Do this. I read this as an e-book and plan on buying the book so I can go back through every ounce of this book and make notes. This book has reshaped how I look at the Gospel in a positive way. I feel my heart has been touched and changed. He writes a prayer at the end of each chapter and it feels like you have a prayer partner walking beside you as you think through the issues presented in each chapter.

This isn't just 5 strong stars, I would give it 100 stars if they had that rating available. This is a must read book. I've already bought a copy for my Dad and will be getting one for myself. I see this as one of those books you go back to over and over again.

My thanks to Charles Martin, Thomas Nelson Publishing and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. It has been an honor.

Hard to lump this one into a category: Part personal testimony, part Bible study, part devotional, part Christian living. The really great thing about it is the absolute passion of the author about the truth of Jesus Christ, and what that means to each and every one of us if we take it seriously...that is, as if it's true. The Bible knowledge is impressive but not pedantic, and the great compliment to Mr. Martin is that he can give his testimony passionately and with humility.

I wanted to love every moment of this book. I read Long Way Gone in one of my book clubs. I had never heard of the book or the author. Our leader didn't realize she had selected a Christian Fiction book. It is a library book club so we normally stay away from that genre. I loved how he weaved the story of God's love in that book. It wasn't so in-your-face that you had a to be a Bible-thumping Christian to enjoy it, but it was very much there, like a warm blanket on a cold day.

I purchased the Audible version of this book. I think that was mistake number one. It is read by the author, which is normally a very good thing. You hear the words emphasized as they meant them to be. But, if you have a "professional" narrator, the diction is much better. I found myself getting distracted by his informal manner of speaking, slurring words, that kind of thing.

Also, a lot of the book was him praying. I think I would have preferred that in a book form so I could read it when the time was right and the setting was right, not just when I got to that part of the audio. It would also then have been easier to go back to prayers that held a lot of meaning.

The big issue I had, however, was when he went on about how we need to repent for the sins of our ancestors. That problems we are dealing with today might very well be due to unrepented sins that our grandparents or great-grandparents committed. Again, I didn't have the written word to double-check any references he gave, but I had a big problem with this part. I think this will lead people to believe in things the Bible does not say. I'm not sure how solidly he could back this view up either. So, after that point, and it was a long part of the book, he sort of lost me.

Also, some parts of his "conversations" he had with Jesus just didn't feel right to me. I'm not sure I could put my finger on it, but it just felt way too casual for how Jesus would deal with someone. I wish I had the printed copy so that I could pinpoint what felt off.

So, while I didn't really love this book, I do plan to read many more of his novels. I think that is where is true gift is in sharing the love of God.

What If It’s True? is a beautiful examination of the life of Christ and the words He spoke. According to the jacket copy, Martin began wrestling with a handful of questions regarding the Bible years before writing this book:
What if every single word of this story is absolutely true and I can trust it?
What if the King of the universe is speaking directly to me through the words of His book?
And if I believe His Word is true, how should I respond?

This book is his attempt to answer those questions. He tackles the fundamentals of the Christian faith with grace and depth, digging deep where it would be so much easier to skim the surface. I found his views thought-provoking, enlightening, and firmly rooted in Scripture.

I expected the highlight of this book to be the writing itself, as its author was already so well-known for his fiction when he wrote it. But, while the writing was exceptional, I was blown away by Martin’s inclusion of Scripture. You expect a book like this to be littered with Bible verses and references, but Martin also managed to weave Scripture seamlessly into nearly every paragraph in the book. This wasn’t just a list of references. I could tell as I was reading that Martin has spend a tremendous amount of time in the Word, and that he has let it saturate his life, his mind, his speech. These quotations never felt forced; they were as natural as breathing.

Usually when reading spiritual nonfiction I have to keep my guard up just a tad. I’ll appreciate when the author makes a good point, and I’ll find things to learn and grow from within the text, but I’m also wary of theological fallacies, of opinion masquerading as fact, of areas where I just can’t agree with the author’s findings because they ring false. I never once encountered anything like that in this book. My theology perfectly aligned with everything Martin wrote. I found myself internally saying Amen often. I also loved the written prayers he included at the end of each chapter, and how much Scripture was woven in there, as well.

There were only a couple of elements that kept me from giving this 5 full stars, and those were incredibly subjective. While I thought Martin’s prose was beautiful, there were a few times when he added in a modern but outdated colloquialism, like “my goose is cooked,” or “I’m tripping over my bottom lip,” or “licking his chops,” that I could tell were meant to make a scene more conversational, but which actually made me cringe just a little. Those took me out of the book. Also, I got so bogged down in the middle of the book that I set it aside for months. Not that what was being said wasn’t fantastic; it was. It was just a bit boggy in those middle chapters for me personally.

At the time of writing this book, Martin had penned thirteen novels, but this was his first work of nonfiction. He’s done more since then, and I fully intend to read them all. I also plan to go back and try his fiction, as I loved his way with words. There’s a depth to his writing that I find moving. As his novels are by and large all very highly rated and respected, I’m excited to experience his telling of a tale all his own. But he did a brilliant job breaking down portions of The Greatest Story Ever Told, and I can see myself returning to particular chapters of this book over and over, for the rest of my life.

This book has forever changed how I view the gospel. I have long been a Christian, but Martin made the gospel real in a way I have never considered. He reaches deep into the surroundings of the crucifixion, the potential thoughts of those witnessing the events.
Martin isn't trying to change the Bible, he is attempting to illustrate what the events were like in those three days. He adamantly states he is not adding to the gospel or the Word of God, he is just trying to help others read and understand it in a more personal way.
Charles Martin has been blessed with a real gift. I highly recommend this book to everyone; in fact, I have already told friends about it! I will be buying a paper copy of this book for re-reading.

One thing you need to know about this book from the start: it is not a quick read. I am usually a fast reader, but I found that I needed to read every word, slowly, and sometimes twice. Martin, himself , asks his readers to linger, read slowly, write in the margins. I found myself needing to medicate and think over what Martin has written. It is a book that I will definitely need to read more than once.

Martin is deep and draws the reader to Christ making him or her think of their relationship with Christ.. This is a book for someone who is serious about getting to know the God in a deeper and more personal way.

I recommended this book to a number of people..

Charles Martin writes about the character of Jesus beautifully. He addresses really hard topics that we tend to ignore because they are so uncomfortable. He made bold claims that raised a lot of questions about what I believe, but he did so with grace and confidence, and I respect him for that.

If you're a Christian, I think this book will open your eyes to things of God that are either unknown or forgotten.
I loved it.

I'm glad I listened to this one--narrated by the author--as opposed to reading. His emotion and conviction clearly comes through his narration of his own words, thoughts and feelings. While I didn't always find myself in complete agreement with what he said, the author clearly spells out the gospel. Added bonus to listening--the author's son composed a song which is played at the end of the book. Great job father and son!!!

First, if you have never read anything by Charles Martin, that changes today! Grab any of his books and you will be changed. Second, What If It's True will forever change your heart and beliefs about the Gospel. Martin brings the Gospel to life in a deep way that makes me feel as though I was witnessing the event. I can't even begin to describe or fathom my thoughts as I read this book. Martin illuminates the Bible in a transforming way that makes reading this book and your Bible an incredible journey. This is not a quick read, but one that I recommend you take your time. He isn't trying to add to the Bible or take away from it, but rather tell it in a way that makes the reader experience the Gospel in a new way. I highly recommend this book! I loved it! I have it highlighted. It is incredible.

In all my years of having a Goodreads account and being a reviewer on other places, I have NEVER given a book 1 star. Even when I DNF a book. This book makes me absolutely sick to my stomach.
It is dangerous, wrong and setting up believers to a lot of failure and condemnation. Diabetes is a generational curse? That is ridiculous. Orgies in hell, other shock value things. He’s a talented writer, but he’s not using his talents for good.
I stopped reading this book in the generational curse chapter and refuse to read it any further. I do no recommendation it to anyone.

Is there an option to give more than 5 stars?! Part creatively retold Bible stories to help readers reimagine them and reconnect to them, part a careful teasing apart of the meaning of Jesus’ words and His life, this book has the power to change things. It confronts our sin, challenges us to take a good hard look in the mirror, asks us the tough questions, and provides encouragement and prayers throughout. The storytelling is masterful, helping me see stories I’ve read dozens of times in new ways, and the combination of humble connections with Martin’s own experiences and challenges to take up our own crosses and act like the Bible is true find the sweet spot between tough commands to live and love better and stories that help us understand what that really looks like. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

Genres: Nonfiction/Religion

I like this author. He is definitely one of my top three favorite Christian Fiction writers. This book, however, is nonfiction and I liked out how he tackled this one. He mentions that he is by no means a theology expert and then he proceeds to tell of his own experience with the scriptures and with his faith. I also liked the way he embellished some of the bible stories with the little details.

One nice thing was that it felt honest and heart-felt. He didn't have anything to prove...he just put it out there. I loved that. SO 4 stars for this one.

“Knowing and living in the sacrificial love of God is better than life, which means laying down mine is a choice I’m willing to make. Freely.”

This and many other treasures of wisdom are found in What If It’s True? Martin’s writing is beautiful. He uses his story-telling talents to capture the heart and richness behind so many moments in Jesus’ ministry. Love love love this book! It’s a book worth reading, re-reading, marking up, dog-earring pages, and lending to friends.

Charles Martin is my favorite author and I have read all of his works of fiction. As I've told my family and friends, he "grabs my heart in the first chapter (or two) and then has me in tears (of joy) in the last pages of the book". So, this is my first read of anything non-fiction by my favorite author. I felt that it started a bit slow, but that likely was me getting used to the structure of each chapter. This book is, IMHO, a phenomenal read blending chapter/verses in scripture with Mr. Martin taking it to his readers, challenging them to read, pray and then go live life as a committed Christian. Most compelling to me are his heartfelt prayers included at the end of each chapter (especially the one dealing with spiritual warfare!!). Grab this book, read it, pray it and live it!

This is the Gospel told from a storyteller's perspective so it's not a theological treatise. It does a good job of applying ideas such as forgiveness, repentance, and prayer to everyday problems.

If I described What If It's True? by Charles Martin in one word, it would be... piercing. He doesn't sugar-coat things. He fully believes in the Bible as inerrant and divinely inspired. He calls out false prosperity movements. He tackles heavy topics such as rejection, resignation, sexual sin, generational curses, and forgiveness. He also devotes time to the love of God as being the basis of everything Christians believe and extending to anyone, no matter how far gone that person may seem.

In What If It's True?, Charles Martin stirs interest with a well-written narrative and then starts probing deeply into his topic. He uses a lot of Scripture and draws Old Testament and New Testament connections that I never noticed even though I've been a Christian for many years. While the focus is on spiritual matters, he shares some of his own struggles and situations. He does use plenty of imagination in his retellings of Biblical events. Some parts seemed more realistic than others. This didn't bother me, but others may balk at it.

I felt that the chapter on forgiveness missed the mark. As someone who has had to forgive some hard things, I know the beauty and necessity of forgiveness. Unfortunately, forgiveness was presented with a “forgive others or else God won't forgive you and you'll be separated from Him” mentality. Yes, I know there are verses that support that view. But as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, I can say that is not what I needed to hear years ago when I was dealing with the muck and mire. What I needed to hear was.... God will guide and help you every step of the way. No, you haven't forgiven yet. Yes, you need to forgive. But God is with you and for you, even when you just aren't there yet. The author did give a few statements about abusive situations, but given how many abused, deeply broken people there are, I think it merits more than a few paragraphs about how forgiveness and justice can co-exist.

What If It's True? wasn't easy to read. I cried... a lot. I could only handle a chapter a day, at most. Sometime in the future, I'd like to go back and read it even more slowly. I loved the prayers he put at the end of almost every chapter. I cried as I prayed them. They helped me to explore and pray more thoroughly than I would have been able to on my own.

I recommend What If It's True? by Charles Martin to Christians seeking to deepen their relationship with God and find greater spiritual freedom. If you've read his fiction novel, Long Way Gone, you may remember he ends with an essay about how no one is too far gone. That particular essay is included in What If It's True?, but is actually one of the shorter chapters. So, if you aren't sure if you want to try What If It's True?, go back and read that ending essay in Long Way Gone to get a taste.

What If It's True? earned a five star rating from me.

This book was hard for me to rate: there were many passages and ideas and pieces of theology in it that fascinated me. Three chapters in particular (4, 6 & 10 ) were beautifully done, challenging, thought-provoking, and truly magnified Jesus and what He has done for humankind.
However, I wish he'd spent more time on expanding the storytelling (he is gifted in that!) and less on confrontational, in-your-face preaching. His intense writing style, in addition to his aggressive tone, were wearying after a while.
I read just one chapter a day, because that was all I could handle - plus, it gave me time to process and benefit from what I read. I appreciate that he was clear about what was his imagination and what was actually from Scripture. But there was a LOT of imagining. For a newer believer, unfamiliar with the Bible, I think this would be confusing and even dangerously misleading.
As other reviewers have said, the most alarming unbiblical teaching in the book came in the chapter about repenting from the sins of your ancestors. His understanding of Scripture on this point negates what the New Covenant (what Christ actually came for!) actually is! We do not live by Old Testament laws; Jesus has fulfilled them in His life, and, for those joined to Him, He has fulfilled them in ours. That chapter was maddening for all the bible passages I would have raised with him in a conversation, that he simply did not deal with. He is putting chains and yokes on believers with this teaching - like Jesus condemned the Pharisees for in his day.
So in sum, there were stories and ideas in this book that were helpful and thought-provoking, and I'm glad I read it. But there were also heavy-handed passages and chapters, and even concepts that were not biblical at all, that would keep me from sharing this book with others.
A very mixed review.

I had very high hopes for this book. I borrowed it on the recommendation of an author I respect and was severely disappointed.

First of all, he does not cover Jesus’ ministry after His resurrection. A huge missed opportunity.

Second, he completely erases Mary Magdalene’s role.
Mary was the first person Jesus appeared to after He rose.
The first person who recognized Him.
The first person to receive the completed gospel.
The first person to preach the completed gospel.
For a time, she was the ENTIRETY of the church.

“Scripture tells us that upon His resurrection, Jesus appeared to Mary;”

That’s all she gets. It’s a disgrace.

I can’t even begin to speak on his preaching that common diseases are the direct result of random family members sinning.

This book is a waste of time. Please read something else.

So many thought provoking words on truth.
A little word of caution on his view of ancestor's sins....but we won't agree with anyone on everything.

"What would the sacrificial love of Jesus do? I'm looking at the cross and the word spoken by the One hanging there, and I'm asking myself, what if all this is true? What if He really meant what He said? And if I understand Him, He's telling us that if we love Him, we will do just that. Love like He does. That includes washing Judas's feet and laying down our lives for people who aren't worth it"

"What if it's true? Because if it is---It changes everything."

This is a "Must Read" book. Charles Martin has wrote a book that will speak to your heart about Jesus. He tells you in the front of the book, to read this book with your bible and notebook beside you Compare what he is saying to what the bible says. This is a book that I will buy in hardcopy and re-read often. I have never read any of his other books, but this one is outstanding! Thank you Thomas Nelson via NetGalley for the ARC copy of this book. This is my honest opinion. This is an awesome book!

This is a deep book for deep thinking and will require multiple readings to really get the most out of it. Mr. Martin uses Scripture and Biblical stories throughout to encourage a deeper relationship with the Lord and does a great job bringing to life the historical context of what took place and gave me a renewed perspective. My only suggestion would be a companion journal or study guide to enhance the topics and allow readers to fully flesh out the richness of what lies within the pages.

It started off solid. Charles Martin has a unique and beautiful way of telling the stories that appear in the Bible, making them come alive with meaning. His storytelling skills are so remarkable that I’m now very eager to read one or two of his actual novels sometime.

Part way through there was a chapter on confessing the sins of our ancestors which felt really sketchy. From that point on I started noticing a few more beliefs held by him that I didn’t agree with at all. Unfortunately, with each new one, I was finding it more and more tempting to just skim through his writing rather than really sit in it like I had for the first half of the book. However, despite this, the stories he told of the life of Jesus and His love and care for His people never stopped being impactful. Those really sunk in all the way through the book, even if I didn’t always agree with how he dissected those stories.

Also, this is not a huge complaint, but there were times in which I felt like this book was written exclusively for men. He tried to include women occasionally, but it was pretty clear the ideal audience was married men.

An excellent book to read if you’re looking to deepen your understanding of just how incredible Jesus’ sacrifice for you really was. You can’t read this and not be amazed again several times over.

Gifted author Charles Martin brings bible stories to life like no one else. He masterfully weaves his re-telling of bible events, together with lessons to learn and he shows how to apply these biblical principles to your life.

I was deeply moved by how real and vulnerable the author got in sharing how Jesu’s ministry transformed his life. He’s the first to tell you he hasn’t arrived and still deals with stuff like the rest of us. He’s very transparent as he shares his journey, with Jesus, his family, friends and a core group of guys he can be real with.

Here is a peek at a story in chapter two that blew me away. It’s titled “We’re all Bleeders” I had never realized what this woman dealt with and how she had to push through her entire being, trusting that when she touched Jesus she would be healed. The author describes how Jesus was waiting for this woman. He describes the “desperation painted across her face. Jesus is her last hope, and He knows it.”

He goes on to describe the women – she knows, “He’s a Healer.”

“being unclean, she cannot get to where Jesus is. They won’t let her. The law prohibits it. She knows she is not allowed around other people. She’s been forced to live and sustain herself on the outskirts, and …she is certainly not allowed to reach out and touch anyone. Most of all, Him. But she has come to the end of herself.”

…” Just a few steps away, the crowd encroaches. She has to elbow her way through. She knows she is in violation. If she’s caught-she doesn’t want to think about it. There He is….in desperation, she lunges, extends her reach, and grasps the corner of His garment….He feels the tug. Feels the power leave. She feels it enter.”

And Jesus said, “Who touched me?”

The author described this emotionally charged moment as the disciples reacted to Jesus’s question. I never thought about how courageous this woman was in her attempt to be healed. Jesus was in the middle of a crowd standing shoulder to shoulder with everyone. What did he expect? Jesus had already healed the woman’s body.” He is calling her forward because He is about to heal her heart. …He says the one single word she needs to hear. “Daughter.”

The author ends each chapter with prayer. He says, “I’ve written a prayer. Something I’ve prayed myself and put down on paper. I’m inviting you to join me in those prayers”

This author encourages readers to circle. Underline. Dog-ear parts of this book that touch their soul. He encourages readers to go deeper in their relationship with Jesus and/or start one with him.

The author helps readers understand the bible. He encourages them to get their bibles and read along with him. This is a powerful book. It’s a must read! I highly recommend this book to everyone.

I listened to this one and it hit HARD. You hear the raw emotion and grit as the author himself reads this one aloud. This was a very personal read and Martin gets into the deep, dark, secret places of our souls. A few of my favorite quotes:

• So ask yourself this… What IF it’s true? Because if it is, it changes everything.

• If one act served to stir the crowds into a frenzy, greater than the crowds at the World Cup, it was Jesus healing blind Bartimaeus. When He spoke to Bartimaeus, He drove a stake in the ground—“I’m coming. And I’m bringing the kingdom of God with me.”

• “ But, I don’t know what His Word says.” Then learn it. “But, it’s always been tough for me to get into. I don’t really—” Stop. You’ve mastered the iPhone, Facebook, Instagram, Fat Chat, and online fantasy football drafts. Man up. Crack the cover and let the Word wash you from the inside out. We’re sheep. He’s our shepherd. Trust me, He speaks our language.

An old hymn by Rhea Miller comes to mind as I finish the final pages of this book. It's called "I'd Rather Have Jesus," and in the chorus she writes that she'd rather have Jesus... "than to be the king of a vast domain or be held in sin's dread sway."

And that's what this book can do for you: it shows you the path to travel in order to overcome the considerable strength of sin's dread sway. Author Charles Martin writes, "I don't care who you are or what you've done, there is no chain, no matter how thick, that the truth won't cut."

I found the rich and specific prayers included throughout each chapter to be a wonderful resource, able to challenge the hardest of hearts and allowing for personal introspection to align the reader's thoughts with scripture. Charles Martin writes with the spirit of a trusted teacher. If taken with an open heart, this book can change your life.

"What if it's true? Because if it is--it changes everything."
