The Premonition Code: The Science of Precognition, How Sensing the Future Can Change Your Life

Rate this book
An in-depth study into the cutting-edge science of ‘sensing’ the future, or precognition—from a cognitive neuroscientist and the bestselling author of The Dream Dictionary   In this groundbreaking book, bestselling author Theresa Cheung joins forces with cognitive neuroscientist Julia Mossbridge, PhD, Director of the Innovation Lab at The Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS). Together they reveal revolutionary new research showing that sensing the future is possible; they also provide practical tools and techniques you can use to develop your own powers of precognition. Precognition is the scientific name for the knowledge or perception of the future, obtained through extrasensory means. Often called ‘premonition’, precognition is the most frequently reported of all extrasensory perception (ESP) experiences, occurring most often in dreams. It may also occur spontaneously in waking visions, auditory hallucinations, flashing thoughts entering the mind, the sense of “knowing” and physiological changes. Combining science and practice, Theresa and Dr Julia unravel the mystery of precognition. The book will   • What precognition is and the different types, clearly explaining the cutting-edge science, including what is known and what is still a mystery  • The most common premonitions that people experience and why, including examples from around the world  • Experimental tools to help you cultivate precognition experiences to help get useful information for your life • Case studies included throughout, with supporting scientific evidence offered alongside to provide validation and explanation • Personal experiences of the authors, detailing how premonition has shaped their lives and interviews with leading scientists and experts in the field

Yes, "The Premonition Code" is an excellent, especially well-written book. Its new website is also a wonderful acknowledgement of things we all experience to some degree, but are sometimes unwilling or afraid to discuss. I also invite you to participate in Theresa's and Dr Julia's grand social networking project, with the very accessible but solid science which "The Premonition Code" creates. You and I have the amazing opportunity meet, work and play with other birds of our feather and Heart. Who wouldn't love *those* sorts of joys? ;-)

Many fundamental mysteries or our Hearts and minds remain inexplicable by scientific method and the scientists who play in it. You (we) instead need to trust your own mind and Heart, opening yourself to the way the cosmos really works and moves. You are that which you think, do, feel, and imagine you can really do.

Yet in our current Western societies and culture, it’s very, very handy to have tribal and cultural assent, confirmation and approval about what we see. And the most accepted way that’s gonna happen is when renowned scientists confirm that inexplicable experiences and phenomena did and do happen all the time.

Now, simply because it can't explain how supernormal phenomena actually function, popular Western scientific culture has long been a colossal, oceanic, iceberg-bound cruise ship trying to navigate through polar ice caps of our own making. Amid the realities of the daily supernormal experiences we all have, 300 years of our own 'thought-bergs' in popular Western science had impeded or even frozen our forward progress in being and becoming our best versions of ourselves. This includes you. When most good scientists can’t explain the cause of something they’ll be inclined to tell you it never happened. But then a closed attitude becomes the opposite of scientific, and turns into a social problem in the understanding and acceptance of reality.

It’s a wonderful thing that the popularity of a scientific thought or theory was never the same thing as either reality or fundamental truths ;-) . The spirit of this book instead and openly presages a true thaw among ice-bound scientific minds, thus creating real and forward progress. Yet Theresa’s and Julia’s cultural and scientific missions go much farther than that. They aim to make this very practical book a brilliant focus, a beacon cutting through our ice-bound oceanic thought to bring all of us together. Using very cleverly combined methods of several different ways of perceiving information beyond your usual senses, this book has the fabulous means for you to teach yourself how to look backwards and forwards in time. You can participate, and learn new skills or refine those you’ve already practiced. Yes, precognition can and does happen every day. Whether or not you notice precognition or clairsentience, or use them, is up to you.

And from our very large scale coming together, in which you can easily play and participate from your own electronic screens, Dr Mossbridge and Theresa could also advance what looks to be the largest scale scientific study ever conducted on precognition. For those of you who already know about the science of people like Roger D. Nelson and his astounding Global Consciousness Project which measures societal presentiments, Theresa’s and Julia’s Premonition Code is different, and has different goals and aspirations, but is also as high-minded as can be made.

‘Science’ can't explain everything. And even if it could ~ the passionate, mind-blowing, essential mysteries of our existence and cosmos would evaporate beyond our ken, like the steam from a hot cuppa tea or coffee. Joy and fun in life require our grateful surrender to amazing, daily mysteries.

Decades ago as an undergraduate (1980) I had to decide for myself that I didn’t always need scientists to tell me something big had happened. Or to give me permission that it did happen. Yet instinctively I still craved the science of some of the best of them to show me I was anything but nuts, and that there do, very much in fact, quietly exist millions of clairsentients with astoundingly similar supernormal experiences to mine. All I had to do was to begin to let myself meet them, and to both learn from and work with them. And I also found something completely unexpected: they often needed my tribe’s perceptions and experiences to advance or enhance their scientific theories.

I'm a 43-year long, very much firsthand observer of fun, accessible, highly practical yet scientific books and audio, published by teachers of clairsentience (which includes precognition). I can tell you that excellent books on clairsentience by great authors with those qualities are especially rare. Having a look into my memory for an example of one of the first good books I read about consciousness and scientific mindsets, I recall the 1975-ish book by Nicholas Regush and Jan Merta, "Exploring the Human Aura: A New Way of Viewing and Investigating Psychic Phenomena", published by Prentice-Hall. The pulsing beacon of that book's energy drew me toward it as I browsed the library of a big seaside city, which was then also known for the highest per capita heroin usage west of the Mississippi. Lotus flowers grow very happily by floating blissfully above muddy muck, right? ;-)

I first came to know this book's very surprising co-author, the adept, playful cognitive neuroscientist, Dr Julia Mossbridge, from her public co-presentation with roboticist Dr Ben Goertzel about "Designing an AI to Love" at a Consciousness Hacking event in San Francisco. Although when we met neither of us had even the slightest notion I'd receive later receive her invitation, Julia eventually invited my Soul Rider company's contribution to this book. I now feel our meeting was kismet. I was provided a copy of the book's galley proof by its co-author, Theresa.

Among my other Soul Rider projects, in addition to the one Julia and Theresa mention in “The Premonition Code”, I author a page on nonlocal consciousness on facebook, at https://www.facebook.com/NonlocalCons.... You can find Soul Rider at https://TheSoulRider.net.

Theresa Cheung and Dr. Julia Mossbridge have compiled here a near-effortless read on discovering or refining your precognition abilities. Yeah, it sounds fantastically New Age-ish, but hear me out.

The two authors are quite aware of the responses given when discussing the act of recognizing information from the future, and packaged within their work are explanations as to what it really means to be a "Precog", how they currently function in our society, anticipations on how they can be better utilized, and, of course, how you, the reader, fits in to all of this.

You're likely reading because you're a) curious to learn, b) curious to give it a try, or c) both. The book appears to set you up well for the third option, giving numerous outside resources (a website to go join and try your ever-evolving abilities out on), other reading, and appendices with exercises and such. Don't fret that you'll be weighed down with vernacular and definitions; you're comforted with even reiterations of many of the hard-to-grasp concepts and given copious amounts of anecdotes to further illustrate what's trying to be conveyed.

Like any muscle that needs strengthening in order to perform to its maximum potential, Cheung and Mossbridge aim to set you on the right path; and, also like work with your muscles, there comes a distinct level of responsibility/safety---to yourself and to others. Often stated within this book are cautions to be transparent and aware of your own mental health whilst conducting these exercises. The Premonition Code sets out to create and influence Precogs of a positive nature, to let this publication be a genesis for people to use their ability to help themselves and those around them.

At the very, very worst, this book will endow you with a meditative routine that will increase your overall well-being. At best? Well, who's to say? Seems that the possibilities are quite numerous.

I haven't tried out the website yet, but I plan on it soon as of the publication of this review. I believe in earnest that The Premonition Code is a book that could really change the way you look at time, the future, and how you view your dreams. It's quite a short read, it's supremely structured, and it's not out to waste your time.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Watkins Publishing for the advance copy.

Julia Mossbridge likely did not directly contribute to the writing style of this book. This hurts what could have been a much better presentation of the material. This was my first deep dive into premonition and precognition so I did learn a few new things though most of the material and techniques seem intuitive. The research is questionable...when completing the research online I made a mistake but I could still "precognize" by choosing one of two options...I performed 100% on 4 tests...hope this does not count as part of the research project! Overall I was expecting a bit more professionalism but received an account from a giddy writer who likes stories about others experiences.

I am almost embarrassed to say I forced myself to finish this book so I could write a full review. Now I have finished, I really don’t know where to start. I knew I was taking a gamble with this one, after recently finishing a few science based books featuring discussions of spacetime, perceptions of time and theories on the structure of the universe (See Rovelli among others) I was eager to see what else was out there, even ‘off the wall’ theories I can accept so long as there is some kind of solid scientific basis behind them.

You will not find anything grounded even remotely in science within this book.

In essence it is a series of anecdotes, name dropping, adverts to websites, apps, and even music stores. I lost count of the amount of references to “scientific” “probabilities” “evidence” without anything actually being provided, as though if the author says something is scientific often enough, then it must be. Another common technique throughout the book is to provide something factual and then in the next breathe leap to some wild conclusion as to what a study with only 5 people might mean for the “precog” community- it’s misrepresentation and “bad science” at its best.

So much emphasis throughout the book is made to how one of the co-authors is Doctor and a “scientist”. Going by this work, they are as much a scientist as I am a lettuce. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry because I just listened to a book which actually stated as something quite normal, how someone 'made themselves sign a contract pledging not to send negative thoughts back in time after establishing communication with the very first first single cell life forms to have evolved on earth'. Seriously?! The “scientist” actually believes this?! Or are they just trying to sell you something....

It wasn’t just the (lack of) content I didn’t get on with, it was also the style of writing, for example: “When other people ask me now what my calling is, I say to teach and learn about love and time” who speaks like that?! Who even asks that question?!

For a book about time, there is a substantial lack of any basic understanding of physics. Presentism is alluded to without naming it, but there is no mention of the block universe theory for example or modern quantum physics theories which exclude time in their equations, classical physics is highlighted a few times, for example at one point the authors state “So far physicists have not been super helpful on our understanding of the flow of time” - WRONG! Just because the authors don’t know, or understand how actual scientists now think of spacetime doesn’t mean they are to be discounted! To add insult to injury, a quote by Einstein is totally mis-represented in the book, the author states that they are placed “on the Einstein ‘God doesn’t play dice’ side of the debate”. That in itself shows a total lack of understanding, Einstein was talking about how bizarre quantum physics is, but it sounds like a good quote so why not shove it in!

In essence the book is utter nonsense, chapter 6 even says you have to believe in it for it to work, this is a clear example of confirmation bias. Other just totally out there things are Handshaking with your “higher self” and “Reversing the polarity” (I guess they watch Star Trek).

It seems the agenda of the book is to try and cash in / take advantage of those who will buy in to this hogwash. “We dream of time when the scientifically evaluated positive precogs, inspired by this book and our website, can be consulted on a variety of issues” I.e. for a fee, we will evaluate you and list you as a certified “precog”, the book even discusses how to make money out of it. Disgusting.

Don’t waste your money or time on this.

I’m always delighted to find books on psychic ability that use scientific research and methodology, and when those books also lay out a step by step process that anyone can try out, I’m particularly thrilled. But perhaps what I like best about the Premonition Code is that you can join the accompanying website for free and practice in random controlled trials. It’s a rigorous scientific approach to something most people believe is impossible. This website gives you a chance to see it for yourself. There’s also a chat group on Telegram, a messaging app, where you can share experiences and tips.

All in all, you get a lot for the price of a book. Dr Mossbridge provides a scientific hypothesis for precognition, the ability to sense the future without relying on your senses or rational knowledge. Her theories come from physics and argue that precognition links to the idea that time isn’t linear, but flows in both directions. I won’t get further into it as the book explains it in much better and greater detail.

In short, buy the book if you’re interested in what I call “real world magic”, or if you wish the things you’ve read in Harry Potter or elsewhere had any kind of parallel in reality. Books like this one will show you that there is “magic”, albeit one that’s unfortunately a lot harder to master than Hogwarts classes, and how to do it. Try it before you decide it’s impossible — you just may begin an adventure far grander than anything you’ve found in fiction.

This would probably be the book I took the longest to complete. Reading the first few chapters, all I could think of was this covers the surface of CIA's remote viewing experiments and then to totally disregard the clairsenses and intuition and substitute premon with precog and fully have a practice sheet about automatic writing in remote viewing, I had to check the title twice or thrice to see if I'm reading the right book. If I needed help with remote viewing, I think I'd go read a bookin that title. Either I precognitively absorbed the information from this book before I actually read it OR this book has nothing new to tell than what we are exposed to, in the mainstream channels. Was actually hoping this book would be different.
P.S: The practice exercises for remote viewing do not work at all in the format written in this book.

I heard about this book on a podcast and was quite intrigued. I think it's really awesome that there are scientists out there who are trying to bring light to the evidence behind these sorts of abilities. There's a big underrated community available now that supports premonitions etc., from a scientific viewpoint that goes unnoticed unless you listen to the right podcasts or read the right material. It borderlines the New Age a little too closely and I think that's why it goes under the radar. This book was great at explaining everything and seemed to have a procedure laid out that is identical to that of the CIA remote viewing of project Stargate. I hope they are someday able to continue by doing studies and books on other abilities in the same spectrum.

The book is neither scientific nor a literary revealing masterpiece on unraveling the road toward mastering own precognition abilities. Its simplistic approach meant to entice the masses into believing that everyone can become a proficient precog by just reciting a few mantras and following a simple system to reach a transcending dimension is deceiving. I believe that it is a lot to be said about a road toward a focused life of decifering own dreams and revealing future events. But if we are to be holding ourselves to a higher ethical standard, how is it that we are talking about applying these intricate skills to a simple gambling game of stock market gains as a career path?

The Premonition Code provides an opportunity to apply methods for accessing your precognition capacities. Through stories and examples, the authors share a context for experiences beyond our usual senses. Intuition is validated as a means of gathering information beyond present time and space. I appreciate the playful tone of the book as well as the clarity of a code of ethics, which is essential for the integrity of positive precognition. The science of precognition is addressed and the authors are clear there is more to be studied.

unbelievable

The contents in this book are hard to believe, however what drove me to this book is by my own experience with precognition. I have experienced spontaneous premonitions. I do not know what happens when I get these but I get these feelings that something is going to happen and it usually does. I want to look into this more and see what I can do as a positive precog.

Wow. I'm so excited to begin this journey. Always been curious about unknown, but still a scientist at heart. This book melded the two perfectly for me.
