Al : Peg, you can stab me with knives, you can beat me with clubs, you can make me open my eyes when we're having sex, but there's no way on earth you can make me get a second job. Peg : But , Al, I want sex. Al : Well, so do I. But I don't see the need to bring you into it. Peg : Did you miss me, at least ? Al : With every bullet, so far.
Splat has a new job. He's going to deliver newspapers. But he is having a few problems. Kitten helps him come up with some inventions to solve his problems. But will Splat ever stop having problems with his job? There seem to be lots!
This was WAY more coherent than any of Splat's Level 1 readers. I think it helps that the focus is the story and not a certain phonics sound. I like all the problem solving and trial and error that Splat and Kitten go through to get things right. It is a good problem solving/STEM story in addition to being a nice little humorous misadventure of a first job story. Hand this to cat lovers, problem solvers, STEM fans, and humorous story fans.
Cute easy reader for beginning readers. The reader follows Splat's journey as a not-so okay news-cat to a fantastic news-cat. Publisher puts this at a reading level 2 - high interest, lovely illustrations. Words are a bit harder than the Pre-Readers/Level 1s. Would be good for independent reading, or for reading along with a parent at bedtime.

This is a very easy read and engaging. My students loved this. Then we did a fun writing prompt about what their first job would be and why.
Cute book with a problem-solving plot. (Though the solution they decide on requires Splat to either give up half his pay or for Kitten to just work for free...) It was fun to see the sequence of problems, though!
