The Death of a hero. The rage of friends. I believe this arc is one of the best simply because the good guys actually lose most of this.

O MY DEMONIC ANCESTRY...!

Yeah, I don't know; it's kind of clear Togashi was ready to move on from Yu Yu Hakusho. This arc has ramped up significantly, to the point of an oncoming apocalypse, very much in line with what one would expect of an "endgame" scenario for a story (making Three Kings more like a "post-game"...?). That's all well and good. But Sensui keeps getting shit added to him that makes everything more and more ridiculous, little of which is "necessary," or at least things could have been handled a bit differently rather than this avalanche of "twists."

So Sensui has seven personalities because of the stress of single-handedly working as a Reikai Tantei ten years ago and fighting loads of tough demons. One of his personalities has a gun built into his arm. His "true" self, Shinobu, is able to seemingly absorb the other personalities, re-complete the whole, making it feel like the whole "Kazuya" thing was just a gag. Then he is revealed to have Seikouki, holy energy. And of course you have that whole thing with Yusuke at the end.

The personalities remind of Shyamalan's film, Split, which obviously came out over twenty years later, but which similarly goes over-the-top with the number of the villain's personalities, when it should be "enough" to have a smaller amount that's still more than one. Sensui has seven personalities, but we only "see" Minoru, Kazuya, and Shinobu. Kazuya's main thing is his Space Adventure Cobra gun-arm, which fills a role that could just as easily be handled by having Sensui use a Reigan - all he does is shoot Yusuke to surprise him, then torment him a bit, and it would be enough of a "shock" for Sensui to use the Reikai Tantei's signature move against him. "Shinbou" doesn't act terribly different from what we see of "Minoru" in combat, seemingly having only Seikouki as a difference, when the story could just as easily have "Minoru" decide it's time to get "serious" and pull out Seikouki as a last resort to defeat Yusuke. I actually never really had an issue with Yusuke's demonic atavism, as it explains how he was so strong throughout the series, and we already had Toguro Otouto claim parallels between himself and Yusuke in their big battle a few volumes ago....

I used to think Sensui's spirit-armor was silly, but I guess I'm more tolerant of it now. To be honest, I feel like it's just there because Togashi is ticking a box for "obligatory transformation" in shounen battle manga, and he couldn't well have had Sensui transform his body like Toguro did, so armor it is.

"Imagine a cute little girl who believes babies come from the stork, growing up to be in porno movies. Things like that delight me." lmao

The panel where Sensui is telling Yusuke his role as a Reikai Tantei will ruin his soul, while Sensui is depicted featureless save for mouth and ears, is cool as fuck.

"The desire to fight for a cause, and to fight for others... eventually decays into the desire to fight, period."

Sensui continues to be interesting. I wish we had some more time to explore his character (especially his relationship to Koenma and parallels with Yusuke). I would also like to hear him talk more about the effect Chapter Black had on him. As it is now, he only feels a tad under developed, so it's not a big deal. But I bit more time in the oven would have benefited him. Great action volume with well earned drama and stakes. Otherwise, this is a great action volume with well earned drama and stakes.

Since volume 3, I have been very critical of this series. Even through the Dark Tournament arc, I continued to be a bit hard on it. But somewhere along the way, I've fallen in love with Yu Yu Hakusho. It's charming characters and their consistent writing give the series a charm all its own, which has completely won me over. The heart and charm of this story go a great ways toward covering for where it lacks in other areas. More than anything else I can say about this series, I don't want my time with these characters to end.

One of my big reading goals for the new year is to read a bunch of my childhood favorite manga for the first time in nearly 20 years to relive the nostalgia and see how they hold up. First up is Yu Yu Hakusho!

Yusuke Urameshi is a hardass teen delinquent that loves skipping classes, smoking cigarettes, disrespecting authority and throwing hands with the toughest gangs in the halls and on the streets. He’s hated by almost everyone around him and he knows it. When he’s killed after pushing a child out of the way of an oncoming car, he’s surprised to find from the afterlife that he has more people that love him than he ever realized after attending his own funeral as a ghost.

Against all odds, Yusuke makes a deal with the angel of death to turn his deviant behavior around in exchange for giving him another chance at life with his friends. He must prove himself that he’s worthy of being brought back to life by becoming a spirit detective, saving the lost souls of sorrowful ghosts one good deed at a time.

The spirit world is more complex than Yusuke realizes, however. He’s soon wrapped up in a world of cutthroat demons, evil spirits and other dark beings that have a bone to pick with him. While performing good deeds to save the living and the dead, Yusuke also finds the chance to put his supernaturally-enhanced martial arts abilities to use by fighting powerful paranormal foes from underworld societies.

---

Yu Yu Hakusho is extremely nostalgic and has a lot of appealing factors. The hilarious banter between Yusuke and his band of badass bros is the forefront of the series. Kuwabara is a lovable goofball who tries to mimic the tough guy antics of Yusuke while constantly revealing himself to be a huge softy with a heart bigger than his fake ego. Hiei is the classic edgy antihero that softens up and becomes gradually more sympathetic as you learn more about his tough upbringing. Kurama is pure class and elegance, his wits and tongue are as sharp as his looks. Then there’s the sassy, beautiful and hilarious Botan who acts as the grim reaper and leading lady. Quite the memorable crew.

Another great thing about the series that may seem odd to point out is the beautifully drawn 80’s inspired fashion. The characters change outfits almost every chapter and they always look clean and refined. It’s hard not to appreciate the style throughout the series. This coupled with the witty banter, crazy martial art demon fights, self-aware humor and fast paced story arcs with lots of action make it a pretty fun series.

While the series is simple and enjoyable, the story, world and villains aren’t that well made in my opinion. Everything seems made up on the fly with little logic or build up. The story and battle arcs get very repetitive and the second half of the series feels like a massive rehashing of everything we’ve already seen. The final arc and ending were unsatisfying and anticlimactic in my opinion. It introduced a bunch of new concepts out of nowhere and then did absolutely nothing with them. Then the series ends with a big cliffhanger with no real resolution.

Overall, I actually enjoyed the calm and relaxed chapters and subplots where it focuses on the main cast of characters bonding and hanging out with each other over the main plot, the battle arcs and the forgettable second half. I think the first arc of the story where it’s just Yusuke and Botan solving mysteries and saving the lives of lost souls was actually the best part of the entire series. The constant focus on battling mundane villains, training arcs and tournament arcs took away from the otherwise lovable group of protagonists.

Not as good as I remember from my childhood, but a fun and engaging series overall that’s easy to read and can lift your spirits when you’re feeling down.

Now HERE is where things go crazy. Sensui's personality split isn't something I love right off the bat, but the reveal that Sensui's "we seven" actually referred to seven Sensui, instead of the seven aura/nen users he was working with, was cool. Him being a human and having spent so long fighting for good giving him "holy aura" which... prevents certain techniques from stopping him, that's great. Like, I dig that the Underworld's usual prevention stuff can't actually touch him because he's not technically "evil".

Yusuke's showdown with Sensui is different from Toguro and he still gets some great scenes in. His willingness to sort of 'sacrifice' himself to fight, his love of fighting in general, the Underworld having a bunch of contingencies that our heroes royally screw up on purple just to get into a personal vendetta is something that really makes this arc feel special. How is Sensui able to perfectly counter everything when other villains have failed throughout the entirety of the Underworld's history? Well, he's just too HOLY so their techniques don't work. Yusuke sabotages the Underworld's ultimate moves so he can have a good 1v1. Kuwabara is so headstrong he ends up furthering the bad guy's plans because his head is empty of all but the desire to FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT. Our heroes really do screw everything up for some greater personal victory, but it's that same drive to improve that sort of defines humanity and gives them the capability for greater good (or greater evil, I guess, in Sensui's case).

*sigh* I was really enjoying the fight between Sensui and Yusuke until the whole "multiple personas" thing happened, and I can't say whether this is handled well or not since I have no knowledge of multiple personality disorder, I just think it was unnecessary. I'm sure it was meant to show how broken Sensui had become constantly being pursued and fighting demons, but I don't think it was necessary.

On top of that, Sensui's made out to be fucking unstoppable which would have been fine if this was the final arc, but it isn't. So this amping up the stakes and making this unbeatable enemy seems weird considering this is final arc material, but to my knowledge there's I think two more?

Aaaaaand then we have the big reveal at the end of the volume that comes the FUCK out of nowhere and is only there to set up for the next arc. I'm not going to go into how stupid this plot twist is or how contrived it seems, but what I will say is I've watched this series multiple times and not ONCE have I gotten any hints that would add up to this reveal. Maybe I'm stupid, maybe I'm not paying strict enough attention, but it seems shoehorned in and unnatural.

Whatevs, I'm kind of done with this series at this point, let's move on.

Another good volume. I really like what they're doing with Sensui, he's turning into a very interesting and unique antagonist. What I love even more about this arc is how they're delving into the power system more and more. The introduction of Holy Chi is a really nice advent. I don't necessarily understand how they can justify that Sensui himself isn't evil, given how he just convinced a child to play a game of life or death, but the rest was so good I'll let this one go.

I like the introduction of the Special Defence Force, Enma-o & the special seal, it helps build out the lore. Yusuke's fight with Sensui and his different personas was also very gripping. I'd definitely like a bit more detail on Kuwabara's new powers, and an explanation as to how Hiei was previously a Class A demon, but hopefully that comes soon.

Yusuke's death was great because of Pu, and I like how they weren't lazy with that plot point and brought it back in a somewhat interesting and useful way. I don't mind the Yusuke is a demon thing, but it did frankly come out of nowhere. This is also another area in which I can see how Yu Yu Hakusho influenced Bleach though, which is interesting.

I thought things are happening too fast (not in a bad way). I mean if you compare this volume to the first one, you can obviously say that there is a huge character and plot development, but the creator made it too well that the transition feels smooth and gentle, yet not dragging. I say fast ‘coz I’m almost near the end —- the end of the world in the story and the end of this manga. 😭

Anyway, Yusuke really is the perfect person to get this job. I can definitely say he’s a great fighter, great team leader, and a great friend. :)

This is the chapter of the great transformation for everyone!!!

The pacing feels a bit off in this volume as new information and action is thrown at the reader a bit too fast. I think if this volume had been split up into two, it would be a bit more digestible. Overall I like Sensui as a villain, though the multiple personalities element might now be the most politically correct. It does however make for an interesting philosophical discussion about morality. And oh boy that cliffhanger sure was something!

Pertarungan Sensui vs Yusuke sebenarnya berjalan dengan baik. Namun entah kenapa, keberadaan kepribadian2 Senseui serta sikap aneh Itsuki memberi nuansa aneh yg membuat kurang sreg LOL
Apalagi dengan adanya sedikit paksaan utk latar belakang moyang Yusuke (meskipun menjadi cocok dengan keberadaan Yusuke).

Volume 1: this egg will hatch a creature that will reflect your soul
Volume 5: the creature hatched into... a penguin?!
Volume 16: the penguin is evolving... and it has your hairstyle!

Yeah, accurate. Slap Yusuke's hair on it and it becomes the final evolution.

I understand the complaints now.

This arc was set up really well: lots of new characters, a big bad, high stakes and some decent enough plot. But this just all went so whack out of nowhere, and with just three volumes left.

Yohsihiro Togashi, Yuyu Hakusho: Into the Demon Plane (ViZ, 1993)

The final battle of this storyline—or is it? Yusuke faces off against Sensui, but this is no ordinary battle. Yusuke is on the verge of finding out something about himself, and he feels this fight will reveal it to him. Meanwhile, Koenma's willing to do whatever it takes to stop the portal from opening. But, of course, as the title of the volume tells you, it's rather unlikely that that's going to happen. Another volume that's as close to nonstop action as it gets. Good stuff. Wish I didn't have to wait four months to get the next volume. ****

despite the entire volume being about fighting, it didn't feel drawn out. though i got to the end, and was baffled. i can't believe togashi went there. really? what a cop out. how many times does yusuke have to die? die, but not really die. this isn't the first time this as occured, despite the whole thing starting with yusuke's death, how many people need to die more than twice in this series? hmm? can't even call these near death experiences, it's more like death took a vacation. plus, why is death the only motive to really turn things around? i think i'm done with me rant.
