How to Build an A

Rate this book
Don't just learn your letters—build them!

It's a book, it's a puzzle—and best of all, it's a way to learn the ABCs. Sara Midda's delightful How to Build an A comes with 11 fully safety-tested EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) pieces that can be pushed together to build all the letters of the alphabet, uppercase and lowercase. In the accompanying book, Midda, the British artist known for her charming watercolors, shows children the way. Each page introduces a new letter—A is for Apple, B is for Boy—and is illustrated with Midda's tiny people, who are shown comically hauling and heaving the pieces into place. Children will love the hands-on fun of bringing the letters of the alphabet to life. And parents will appreciate the mesh bag that comes with the kit, so all the parts stay together and can be used over and over again. For preschool and up.

Love this book. We read it every night and it's helping my 4 year old learn to read.

Ours didn't come with the foam letters. I don't even know where we got it. I just found it on the bookshelf.

This book comes with foam building blocks so that readers can make the letters as they follow along with the text. Tiny inset illustrations show little people making the letters out of the same shapes that the child/reader has in hand. The large watercolor illustrations for each letter are beautiful. The text is clever and rich in poetic device (rhythm, rhyme, alliteration, assonance). Great fun!

Awesome book. Would have rated it a 5 but the pieces given make the letters a bit more abstract (ie hard to identify) than I was expecting. Overall recommendable though.
