The edition of the book I read included F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story and the screen play. I loved both. I've read lots of plays but never a screen play and I was not disappointed. I was surprised at how closely the movie followed the screen play. It was so stylized and allowed the reader to look through the eyes of the writer. I loved the story and the way in which it was written.
okay, but Eric Roth is a genius - period. i've enjoyed plenty of the movies he's written scripts for, but i must say benjamin button remains an all-time favorite even after all these years. i don't often find movie adaptations better than the books they derive from, but in this case, the screenplay is by far superior compared to fitzgerald's novel (which i also admire and like, by the way) to create something so unique, so vastly different from the original piece of writing is talent written in capital letters, not to mention its lasting effects; so many of the lines of wisdom spoken by the characters remained with me after watching the movie, and made me return to rewatch it on more than one occasions.
When a movie is made based on a novel or short story, people usually say the original stories are better, since movies have lots of restrictions to fully accomplish what novels/short stories can offer. However, this screenplay would be probably one of the few screenplays that are better than the original story. Fitzerald's original story is definitely great, but the breadth and depth of the screenplay is beyond expectation.
This is the first script I've ever read, but I had to after watching the film. This screenplay is one of the best I've ever read or watched. Amazing writing.
