Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

I think the changes the show made are more interesting, however I think the timeline in the comics is better. Also disappointed to learn that the series was not fully collected in the format so eventually I’ll have to switch to the Ultimate Collection editions. But still I really enjoyed this.

I hate the term "Subverting expectations" due to its overuse in recent blogs, vlogs, and articles but damnit if this book doesn't do just that at almost every bend.

There's a lot to unpack here. This is a volume of about 40+ chapters (1000+ pages) which translates to roughly 1/3 of the complete story. Without getting into details of the actual plot and story, which you can easily read in the synopsis section, I can't help but to say that this story holds a special place in my heart and seems kind of personal. There's a lot of things said between the lines in its satirical parody of other comics out there, but more importantly the entire compendium brings up many disturbing subjects that don't have a clear answer.

The writer takes a more absurdist approach to the story telling and feeds you answers that the MC chooses, but doesn't ever offer a definite solution to the issues being raised. Though I tend to get sick of these types of stories, Invincible has a way to pull you back in with another juicy conflict before you can dwell too much on the problems at hand. This pace ramps up the plight of the MC and the meta struggle the story presents.

The artwork is much like the subject matter of the story: Simple yet viscerally graphic. What seems like a PG Justice League story at first, the comic soon sobers you up with a smattering of gore and shocking violence. I'm not saying this is a bad thing by any means, but the comic tends to view itself (either sarcastically or not) as a family friendly comic as a whole. I think it's sarcasm.

All in all, this comic has been placed at the top of my list as one of the top 10 greatest comics of all time.

Really entertaining read ! I love revisiting this series. Kirkman wastes no time in his writing and jumps you right in. I couldn’t put the book down, I was hooked and loved Ryan Ottley’s artwork so much.

Love the characters, you learn their origins as well. You get it all in this one book, which is solid, can’t wait to revisit Vol 2. So much fun. I laughed, and had all kinds of emotions.

For sure one of my favorite comic series of all time. A little bit slow or dialogue heavy in places. This format is a great way to read and really take in the art work due to the large page size.
