Mothers were still referring their teenaged daughters to the Johnsburg Clinic. The clinic’s doctors specialized in adolescent and post adolescent teen girls and advertised their expertise in reproductive and sexual health, including education about sex and sexual maturity, gynecologic needs, birth control, HIV screening, treatment, and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. Identifying and managing risky behaviors such as sex, smoking, alcohol use, and substance abuse were also touted. Local GP’s were making recommendation referrals and mothers were making appointments for their daughters. Sofia, soon to be a high school senior, had heard about what happens at the Johnsburg Clinic from classmates who had their medical exams there. She was not a happy camper when mom told her she made an appointment for her and insisted she had keep it.
