2015 and 2016 IPPY Award Winner. 2016 National Indie Excellence Awards Finalist. Rue is an award-winning fiction author and in her limited spare time, she reads voraciously. Her love of the written word led to the pursuit of a B.A. in Journalism from Pepperdine University in California and a lifelong passion for writing. Her respect for indigenous cultures, oral traditions, and the seasonal magick of nature inevitably brought her work to the world of fantasy. The story of Flynn Hawthorn has been part of her heart and imagination for nearly a decade.
This book really surprised me. I loved the relationship between Rachel and Gwenn. I don’t have a sister, but this is the kind of relationship I would want if I did.
My favorite part of this story is that is was inspired by true events. To meet the love of your life the way that Gwenn did must have been so strange, going from thinking you have one sort of relationship to going in a completely different direction.
I will definitely be reading the rest of this series!
A delightful tale of two 👭 sisters and their struggles for love, acceptance, and happiness 💕😥😍😃 August 9, 2018 Format: Kindle Edition 👍👍Loved it! What a great story of two close sisters and their love lives. It's well-written, flows smoothly at a surprisingly fast pace, and briefly even carries the action to New Zealand, one of my favorite settings.
Older sister Gwenn, with her past disappointments and her fantasies about an alternate family, is my favorite of a great slate of characters. Through mental flashbacks, the author revealed Gwenn's restrictive life with her straight-laced parents and her failed relationships. Despite building a thriving business, she still internalized her mother's criticism and felt like a failure in her personal life. Her surprise quest for missing family connections leads her to Daniel, a man she needs in her life, one who also really needs her to bring him out of a long-term limbo entered upon his wife's death. Gwenn's mother Shirley is a real trip, judgmental and totally oblivious to how much her daughters despise dealing with her. Rachel, Gwenn's younger sister, is a ball of energy, hiding her true nature from her parents and dealing with a crumbling relationship with rock star girlfriend Annie. With only a touch of sizzle, author Rue has made Gwenn and Rachel's romantic side sing.
I really liked Rue's writing, but I did find the timing confusing. They seem to go from Christmas to spring to talking about Halloween parties within a matter of a few weeks. But that aside, the dialogue, insights to well-defined characters and strong plot made this a joy to read. And the last few pages are especially witty and fun, making me want to read more by the author.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
I just finished reading, and I have to say, I couldn't put this book down. The characters kept me engaged in the story line. I wanted to know what happened to each character, I was invested in the characters and couldn't wait to see how the author told their stories. Each character had their own story and each story became a part of each of their lives and had an impact on the person they had become. When I finished and read the small excerpt of the next book, all I wanted was to start reading to learn more about these characters. I cant wait to start the next one.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
I was fortunate to receive a Kindle copy of this book through an Amazon giveaway done by the author. I really enjoyed this story. It’s the story of two sisters, their relationships with each other, with their parents, and with others in their lives. It was at times a little difficult to keep up with what sections were flashbacks to their past and what was current, but on the whole it was quite enjoyable.
Wonderful book about sisterly love, family secrets, forgiveness and finding one's happiness in today's world. Main characters Gwen and Rachel are lovely, quirky, and totally believable. The storyline is so realistic and heartbreaking, with bits of humor and lightness that make you want to cry and shout for joy! I read an exclusive arc in exchange for an honest review.
When I started this book I thought, “Oh no, this is silly. This is going to be a waste of time.” But I was very quickly hooked by the humor and every day drama of these two sisters. Gwen has over the years tried to please her overly religious parents, but keeps telling herself that she must have been swapped at birth. Her sister Rachel is openly gay, and everyone except her parents knows it. Gwen comes across some photos that reveal a part of her parents past she knew nothing about – photos of her mother with another man. Maybe her belief that her father at least is not actually her father isn’t a fantasy after all. Gwen tracks down Daniel Gregory, Jr. who happens to be the son of the man in those photos. There is instant chemistry between them. Now she feels even worse – is she attracted to her half-brother? Gwen spins out of control and runs off to New Zealand. In the meantime Rachel has broken up with her girlfriend Annie.
This book is undoubtedly chick lit which I normally do not care for. But Rue’s writing was delightful. These sisters are so realistic. I laughed, I felt like crying, I detested their parents, I rejoiced for Gwen and Rachel. Rue’s style of writing made me love these sisters.
