During the events of your name., Mitsuha and Taki's miraculous encounter forever changed their lives. But they weren't the only ones affected by their body swapping -- Mitsuha's friends and family have their own sides of the story to tell!
This is an interesting way of looking at the same story in Your Name, using a different point of view other than those of the two main leads. It uses Teshi's point of view, and how he and Mitsuha actually have similar circumstances when it comes to their roots in their hometown. It spotlights a supporting character that actually has a solid backstory to fleshes it out.
I really like how this side story reveals one of my favorite mini-arcs from the movie, that is the origin of the outdoor café-style tables and chairs near the vending machine by Mitsuha and her close friends. Taki, while in Mitsuha's body, played a big role in that event. It is probably the one that helped developed Taki's own connection to the town and people of Itomori.
If you're like me and Your Name is one of your favorite movies, you will probably enjoy this one.
this was okay-ish though overall i did like it <3 i do wish it'd be better because it was not what i expected though not necessarily fully a bad thing but still :(( the art style was still as pretty as ever <3
A fun way to return to the characters of your name. This book tells the story of some of the days Taki spent as Mitsuha. It adds nuance to both of those characters, but by the end of the story, the character most in focus is Teshi. We get to see his inner conflict over his expected role in Itomori, and a little bit of his family situation.
It's nice to have more of this story—though I hope the popularity of your name isn't keeping Makoto Shinkai from moving on to other stories. (He doesn't seem to be involved with this Another Side: Earthbound series, and IMDB shows that he's working on a new film, so that seems good.)
It was nice seeing all the things that happened while Taki was being Mitsuha. This is basically all the things we heard about, but didn't get to see in the main volumes. I feel like the Your Name manga are too short, but I guess it makes sense since it's main medium is supposed to be the movie.
Estoy fascinada y emocionada.
Journey to a time before a comet streaked across the heavens and changed the lives of two people.
If you enjoy the anime, manga, or light novels of the original your name then I am sure you will enjoy this volume as well which is basically events happening while the magic from the comet switches Mitsuha and Taki back and forth. This volume however unlike the original series is far more focused on Mitsuha's (her physical body not her mind) side of the story letting us see things that happen while the original story might have switched to Tokyo or scenes that would have bogged down the tempo of the original story. In doing so we get to see more of several characters without the worry of a story bound by time.
I am hoping the next volume will let us see more of what life is like for Mitsuha as she lives in Tokyo in the body of Taki though in my opinion the majority of the real action is here in Itomori so hopefully volume 2 turns out alright. :)
This was short, cute and exactly what I expected. The structure of this spin-off was a little confusing and it took me 2-3 pages to understand who the episodes wanted to focus on but I was happy that this story actually gives you more background information to the main story. I hope they will publish more of these to complete the series.
I'm home for a few days so hopefully considering this heatwave I can read a little more now. I decided to finish the Your Name series with these last two side volumes.
I loved the movie adaptation as well of this title, so I had to get these books as well.
What to say about this first one, we go back to almost the start of the story and there's a little recap as well, but this time we focus more on some specific episodes that happened during the switch. Even if the main protagonists are still the same as the main series, there's definitely more space to what the people that surround them think of the different behaviours.
Really disappointed by this. There was a lot of repetition from the original Your Name 3 volume manga series, and what was there wasn’t that good in my opinion. I say this being a major fan of the anime and manga (still need to read the light novel). I feel like I could have lived without reading this.
The only interesting parts were about Mitsuha’s friend Tesshi, who is dealing with the pressure of being the heir to a major construction company. His father expects a lot of him, and while he plans to stay in Itomori, he has his own dreams and ambitions. I enjoyed getting to know his character more.
A thing that really annoyed me though was the over use of the non-word “ain’t”. It felt so out of place. I don’t see myself rereading this so I think I’ll be returning or reselling these 2 Your Name spin-offs.
It was cute, although I thought I was reading the first book of the original series and not a companion novel, so I was expecting something different from what I got. I do wish there was more interactions between Mitsuha and Taki, though I'm sure that's the focus of the main story.
3,5 stars. I've read the light novel this (and the second volume) are based and I liked it and I liked this too. I think the first short story (Taki in Mitsuha's body) is actually the weakest of the bunch because it doesn't give as much new angle as the other stories. So that's one okay, sometimes feeling a bit too "I don't know anything about girls". Teshi's story is more interesting because he's conflicted between the life laid in front of him (inherit the family business) and wanting to give the backwaters little town a shake to wake it up a little. He could do good in Itomori but also he kinda hates it like Mitsuha and Sayaka do. Many people growing up in small towns and villages know it.
your name. Another Side:Earthbound is a spinoff of the movie your name. Don't even try to read this without having watched the movie. You won't get it.
That said, it's a neat spinoff. This first volume is mostly filling in on Taki's side of the tale living as Mitsuha. Each chapter is a little vignette of Taki living as Mitsuha, so there's not much over all plot but it's interesting to see day-to-day life explored a little more.
It's a nice companion to the movie, but it didn't wow me the way the movie did. It feels a little like cliff-notes rather than a fully fleshed out story in its own right, which is a shame. It's like a collection of those little bonus chapters you see at the end of different manga rather than its own thing.
I am incredibly bias and am so excited to see what they both went through when the switched bodies and how they managed. Plus getting to learn more about Mitsuha's friends was also very cute and fun.
This was so great! I don't know why there aren't any reviews on it because I'm pretty sure Your Name is a popular film. To be fair, this is a completely different manga that builds off of the story from the film. Another Side: Earthbound is basically a collection of short stories from the situation in the movie. Not to give too much away, it's adorable and adds even more to the original story. The art is phenomenal . Considering this is a newer manga, the panels and art are more modern and detailed than the manga covering the movie. This is just a fantastic read and should be a must-read for anyone who loved the movie!
Meh. It was okay, I guess. It's just that I haven't watched the movie (though I know about it) and from reading this companion thing, I could tell that there was a chunk of the story that I was missing. Like, the imprint of the story was there, but not the story itself. I wish it stood alone on it's own more, is what I mean to say.
(This book was part of the January Manga Spice Cafe subscription box.)
In "Your Name: Another Side: Earthbound" volume one, we get to see another angle of the story.
I personally had a much more fun time reading this book than I did the entire rest of the series. Taki is by far my favorite character and I just love the shenanigans he gets himself into. He really knows nothing about how to be the proper lady, and it is so hysterical to witness. As Mitsuha, Taki trash talks, confronts gossipers, and struggles indefinitely with these things called bras and skirts. I also love the interactions he has with Mitsuha's little sister; she has to think that there is something truly wrong with her sister after the things Taki puts her through. :) I had so much fun learning more about Taki, and this novel really helped me understand how much he loved escaping Tokyo. I feel it is abundantly clear that Mitsuha wants to escape her hometown, but I was left wondering what was in it for Taki. This installment helped me see why Taki enjoyed the swaps just as much as Mitsuha.
The second half of the book focuses in on one of Mitsuha's friends, Tesshi. He is also tied down due to his obligations to his family. Much like Mitsuha, he wishes that he can escape their small town, but he seriously doubts this will ever happen. I love the bond that forms between Tesshi and the "off-kilter" Mitsuha (Taki). There friendship really blossoms and I love all the little moments between the two in this book.
Overall, I thought it was really fun to experience this world in a different way. Personally, my favorite part of the manga "Your Name" is the weird situations that Taki found himself in when he was inhabiting Mitsuha's body, so experiencing a more fleshed out version of these incidents was quite a hoot. I'm glad that "Anotherside: Earthbound" exists; I feel like it is helping me appreciate the full depth of the story much better. This book is a lighthearted tale of Taki's confusing journey of learning how to act as Mitsuha, but it also features many touching moments in which the friend groups gets even closer and the reader gleams some inner truths about the characters. I would highly recommend checking this out if you love "Your Name" (the manga, the light novel, or the movie!).
I just love Your Name. from Makoto Shinkai. Not only the movie, but also the two novelisations, so far, and the mangas. In this adaptation, the focus is not only the body swap between Taki and Mitsuha, but also Mitsuha's friends perception of her "sudden changes of heart", from one day to the other. Also, the focus is Mitsuha's life, but not Mitsuha herself, since we see it through Taki's POV. We get to know her friends, as I said before, her family and the environment she grew in.
This felt like those filler episodes on a TV show, except it fulfilled multiple purposes. The first one being another opportunity for me and other lovers to revisit the world of Kimi No Na Wa (which further reignited my love and appreciation and overall obsession) <3 Secondly, it's refreshing to see the characters I am fond of beyond the main plot. I felt that this gave the characters a space to live their life and further expand upon specific scenes that were in the original film but (understandably) cut short. With that last point in mind, that definitely helped us to see these characters in a more complex light, especially with the spotlighting of more side characters.
Overall, this was such a refreshing read and addition to the original film!
It was nice seeing all the events unfold while Taki was in Mitsuha's body, which added an interesting layer, though I am not sure if I completely liked it—or Yotsuha's perspective, for that matter. However, the most compelling part for me was Mitsuha's father's perspective in Volume 2. The backstory of Itomori was revealed, and it suddenly made sense how Mitsuha managed to convince her father at the end of the movie. This fills in the gaps for the things we heard about but did not get to see in the main volumes. I would still recommend it for anyone who wants to dive deeper into the world of Your Name.
It fills in some details from the movie, but some of the movie's appeal is that you can impose other narratives onto the structure so it may be hit or miss for some fans. The second volume has more depth to it than the first, and if you're pressed you won't "miss" anything by only reading the second. If you like that one you can even go back and try the first volume.
This is a cute read, but it doesn't offer much substance by itself or as a companion to the main work. The perspective we see from Taki is not more fleshed out than what is shown in the movie (or 3 volume series), and Teshi's perspective goes just a bit further than what is implied in the movie. I didn't find this volume very engaging because a lot of it felt like a repeat or recap of what I already read in the manga volumes and saw in the movie.
Really enjoyed the movie so wanted to read the Mangas as well & so far liking them as well. Love having more story that the movie sadly couldn't cover. The film is still stunning & I really love it!!!!
