Neil deGrasse Tyson

In 2001, Tyson was appointed by President Bush to serve on a twelve-member commission that studied the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry. The final report was published in 2002 and contained recommendations (for Congress and for the major agencies of the government) that would promote a thriving future of transportation, space exploration, and national security.
In 2004, Tyson was once again appointed by President Bush to serve on a nine-member commission on the Implementation of the United States Space Exploration Policy, dubbed the “Moon, Mars, and Beyond” commission. This group navigated a path by which the new space vision can become a successful part of the American agenda. And in 2006, the head of NASA appointed Tyson to serve on its prestigious Advisory Council, which guides NASA through its perennial need to fit ambitious visions into restricted budgets.
In addition to dozens of professional publications, Dr. Tyson has written, and continues to write for the public. From 1995 to 2005, Tyson was a monthly essayist for Natural History magazine under the title Universe. And among Tyson’s fifteen books is his memoir The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist; and Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution, co-written with Donald Goldsmith. Origins is the companion book to the PBS NOVA four-part mini-series Origins, in which Tyson served as on-camera host. The program premiered in September 2004.
Two of Tyson’s other books are the playful and informative Death By Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries, which was a New York Times bestseller, and The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America’s Favorite Planet, chronicling his experience at the center of the controversy over Pluto’s planetary status. The PBS NOVA documentary The Pluto Files, based on the book, premiered in March 2010.

Last summer I filled my bookshelf with all of this mature and educational reading material, thinking I would be a grown-up and spend my summer expanding my mind and NOT solely reading smut. Astrophysics for People in a Hurry was one of those reads I attempted to help me in my goal. Let me tell you -- most of the book was way, WAY beyond my ability to comprehend. I do find the topics fascinating though. So imagine my surprise when I saw this title out there (*eARC Netgalley). If it's wrote for young people, then myself as a 35-year old adult should definitely be able to "get it", right?!?! No. Nope. Nein. Not happening. I understood a lot more of this one though compared to "for People in a Hurry", so I'm getting somewhere folks. It's still a hard concept to grasp, though I had fun trying! Maybe if Mr. Tyson could make his next title "Astrophysics for Kindergartners in a Hurry" ??

I read this book for two reasons 1) I bought it for my 4th-grader and wanted to know what was in it and 2) I wasn’t sure I could handle the adult version. Having listened to several lectures by Tyson I could definitely sense his voice coming through as I read the words on the page. Several funny, kid-appealing asides pepper the book with goodness. I like the encouragement Tyson gives our young scientists to explore, and be amazed by, our world.

Summary: OMG. This guy is so awesome. Instead of being super serious, he just lets his love for the subject come out. I mean, if you're going to teach/preach/get people involved in a field that needs more participation, this is how you do it.

NDT is the bestestestest of everyone I've read in science b/c he knows it so well, he can just say it with joy and love. Too many people in these fields take themselves way to seriously, but all the people I've met that are totally brilliant are more like this tone. Fun, joy, just say it. So great.

2) Dark Energy
You need to really get these things better if you are going to be a true Star Trek Fan. So I am thankful for that.
p. 26 - I did not know that photons were electrons plus protons. It's photons that travel across the universe and that our machines detect to understand the expansion of the universe (light).
p. 31 - He uses this idea and then gets philosophical in a cool way. Like science can figure out the beginning of the universe, but before that, it's tough. Then he goes on and is like: "scientists have to admit what we don't know all the time. People who believe they know everything have neither looked for, nor stumbled upon, the boundary between what is known and what is unknown in the universe." Deep.
p. 89 - Regarding the 100 Authors against Einstein, Einstein "When he learned of the book, he responded that if he were wrong, then only one author would have been enough."
p. 127 - I did not know much about the Five Hundred Meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) and that it's China's way of getting the first call from space. Dig it. "If aliens ever give us a call, the Chinese will be the first to know."
p. 134 - Moon rock sold for $330k in 2012
p. 136 - This whole discussion on the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud. Wow. so beautiful.
p. 141 - You cannot see the great wall of china from space, b/c it is too narrow. did not really know that or that all the lights in NYC and Paris also not bright enough to see from space.
p. 148 This whole sexism with the Nobel committee is f***. Jocelyn Bell story. Also with the dark matter discovery. What's up with that? Also Vera Rubin (p 78)
p. 157 onward, he talks about the Cosmic Perspective and various implications. It's just given as a series of facts/ideas. But I think it's pretty deep, esp since his audience is for young people. Things like, The cosmic perspective is spiritual but not religious. The Cosmic perspective requries you see the possibility of a multiverse and whatever that implies for your reality. I think if you're a fiction writer, this whole section is bawler for opening up the mind.
I'm a total fan of this dude.

Let's say the lockdown challenged me to revise everything I learned at school. This was fun, in part because I didn't remember much about astrophysics and because back then my teacher was not explaining this good. Now I want a book like this about physics.

I realized semi-recently that books designed for kids sometimes teach scientific concepts more accessibly than books designed for adults. I tried reading the version of this book for adults but struggled to make sense of any of it, so I was relieved when I came across this adaptation. There were still some things in this version that I had trouble wrapping my head around, but I had a bunch of "aha moments" too. It's a really good feeling when an idea finally clicks for me, and I found myself beaming with excitement (at both the new understanding and at the concepts themselves) pretty often. Space is another thing I've loved and been curious about all my life, and I'm happy to have made some progress in understanding it.

Un libro lleno de misterios que dan ganas de descubrir. Los autores logran que explore más allá de lo que conocemos, nos dan una perspectiva cósmica que sobrepasa límites. Agujeros negros, pulsares, quarks, Cúmulo Coma, Europa, Io, Titán, nuestra hermosa Luna y por supuesto, la Tierra, de esto y mucho más.
Aprendí que la exploración y el anhelo de saber más sobre nosotros es más importante que muchas otras cosas.
Es un libro rápido de leer, pero a la mitad descubres que quieres leerlo más lento. Quieres pensar y detenerte a analizar lo que has leído. Quieres disfrutarlo al máximo. Cada imagen, ilustración te dejan levitando.
Que no te asuste la palabra Astrofísica, cualquiera puede entender y leer este libro.
Lo recomiendo mucho.

1 Sentence Summary: From the beginning of the universe to our own solar system to the possibility of alien life, Neil deGrasse Tyson explains some of the fundamentals of astrophysics in a simple way younger readers can understand.
My Thoughts: I thought this was well put together, with interesting facts and visuals. My only complaints are that at times it felt a bit preachy and I wish he had gone a little more in depth/explained better on some topics. (But I suppose it is meant for “young people” so maybe I should read the adult version.)
Recommend to: Young people interested in space.

Reflections and lessons learned:

Ok, so maybe I knew a bit more about astrophysics than I thought but this was still a really enjoyable listen and filled in some useful analogies to firm up the basis of my knowledge. Completely relatable examples for a girl with a cheap childhood telescope in Superman and Mighty Mouse being universal protectors (don the cape and sing the theme song - ooompaooompaooompaooompa!). Wonderful choice of narrator too. Now time for me to start facing the adult versions… gulp!

Minus a star just because I hate science back in high school and yes, I was choosing right by social study. So it is not you book, it’s me!
But this is a great book to learn about astrophysics in a hurry, for everyone all ages really. Learning about the world and universes is that much interesting! Especially if it was packed with anecdotes that are super funny and full of superheroes references. It also tells some philosophical ideas on human behavior related to how the universe works: that the universe does not revolve around you only..surprise, surprise!
But this is a great book to learn about astrophysics in a hurry, for everyone all ages really. Learning about the world and universes is that much interesting! This is the type of book that I like. বিজ্ঞানের বইগুলি এমনই হওয়া উচিত। যেখানে সরলীকরণ ও জটিলতার মধ্যে একটা সাম্য থাকবে। যাতে বাচ্চাদের মনে না হয় যে জিনিসটা খুব সোজা, আবার তারা মজাও পায়৷ কৌতূহলও জিন্দা থাকে।
আমি সবসময়ই বলি, বিজ্ঞানী ও লেখক, এই বিরল কম্বিনেশন সহজে পাওয়া যায় না, এমনকি মিচিও কাকু আর টাইসন ছাড়া আমি অন্য কাউকে এস্ট্রোফিজিক্সের জটিল জিনিসগুলি নিয়ে এত সাবলীল ও কৌতূহলউদ্দীপকভাবে লিখতে দেখিনি।
সাধারণ নক্ষত্র থেকে পালসার, সুপারনোভা, ছায়াপথ, আলোর গতি, ওয়ার্মহোল সবই আছে বইটাতে৷বাচ্চাদের বই বলে এটাকে দুধভাত করে ফেলা হয়নি, হয়েছে মাংস ভাত। জটিল জিনিসগুলি হয়ত অনেকে এখন বুঝবে না, কিন্তু এই জিনিসগুলি পরবর্তী ক্লাসে জানবে টাইপ। বাজওয়ার্ড, গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পরীক্ষা নিরীক্ষা সবই একটু একটু দেওয়া আছে। বইটি জানাবে, কিন্তু ভয় পাওয়াবে না। আপনাকে কৌতূহলী করবে।

My son and I enjoyed this very much! We learned a lot: how they name planets and moons, the four forces of the universe, and why Santa should vacation in Ecuador! A wonderful read if you want to dip your toes into scientific theory without getting a headache - even if you do not understand everything, there are so many jaw dropping moments! I especially loved listening- LeVar Burton reads the audio book! (Reading Rainbow) This is perfect for children and adults. Fun Fact: A moon rock sold for $330k in 2012!

প্রায় দু'বছর আগে আমি নীল ডিগ্র্যাস টাইসনের 'Astrophysics for People in a Hurry' বইটি পড়েছিলাম। বইটি বেশ জনপ্রিয়তা লাভ করেছে। প্রায় এক বছরের মতো বইটি নিউইয়র্ক টাইমসের বেস্টসেলার নন-ফিকশন তালিকায় স্থান ধরে ছিলো। পরবর্তীতে কিশোরদের জন্য গ্রেগরি মোনের সাথে নীল এ বইটির আরেকটি সংস্করণ বের করেন। যার নাম দেন 'Astrophysics for Young People in a Hurry'। ছবিতে থাকা 'অ্যাস্ট্রোফিজিক্স সহজ পাঠ' বইটি মূলত এই কিশোর সংস্করণের বঙ্গানুবাদ। অনুবাদ করেছে শ্রদ্ধেয় আবুল বাসার।
ব্যক্তিগত ভাবে ছোটদের বই পড়তে আমার ভালো লাগে। সত্য বলতে মজা লাগে৷ অব্যক্ত এক আনন্দ কাজ করে। আর সে বই যদি হয় প্রিয় একটি বিষয় তথা জ্যোতির্বিজ্ঞান নিয়ে, তাহলে তো কথাই নেই। তবে বইটি সরাসরি ছোটদের তালিকায় ফেলে দিলে ভুল হবে এজন্য যে, বইটার কনটেন্ট বা বিষয়বস্তু ও তথ্যগুলো জ্যোতির্বিদ্যা নিয়ে ধারণা নেই এমন মানুষের জন্যেও খুব সহজ ও সুন্দর ভাবে ফুটে উঠেছে। সে দিক বিবেচনায় বঙ্গানুবাদের নাম অথা 'অ্যাস্ট্রোফিজিক্স সহজ পাঠ' বেশ উপযোগী।
১২টি অধ্যায় নিয়ে এ বইতে নীল যে শুধুই বৈজ্ঞানিক তথ্য নিয়ে আলাপ করে গেছেন তা নয়, প্রায় প্রতিটি অধ্যায়ে আছে গল্প। নীলের কিশোর জীবন থেকে নেয়া গল্প, করেছেন বিজ্ঞানী হওয়ার পরের গল্প'ও। এই যেমন কিভাবে সুপারম্যান কমিক্সে বিজ্ঞানী নীল সুপারম্যানকে সাহায্য করেছিলেন তার গল্প'ও আছে এ বইতে। তবে গল্পগুলো প্রাসঙ্গিক এ কারণে যে, গল্পগুলো বেশ চমৎকার ও বাস্তব উদাহরণ বিধায় ছোটদের মনের জগতে দোলা দেবে। আর এ দোলা দিয়ে বিস্ময় জাগানোই তো ছোটদের জন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
নীল নিজেই বলেছেন, 'আমি যদি ও কাজে সফল হই, তাহলে ডিনার টেবিলে বসে তোমার বাবা-মাকে তাক লাগিয়ে দিতে পারবে তুমি। তোমার শিক্ষককে'ও মুগ্ধ করতে পারবে। আবার মেঘহীন রাতে নক্ষত্রের দিকে একদৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়ে থাকতে পারবে গভীর অনুভূতি নিয়ে। তখন তোমার দৃষ্টিতে একই সঙ্গে থাকবে উপলব্ধি আর বিস্ময়।'
হ্যাঁ, উপলব্ধি আর বিস্ময়। বইটার মূল উদ্দেশ্য ছোটদেরকে এ মহাবিশ্বটা অল্প করে হলেও উপলব্ধি করানো। উপলব্ধি করাতে বা করতে সক্ষম হলে বিস্ময় আপনাই জেগে ওঠে। এ কাজে বইটি কতটা সফল, এ প্রশ্ন তোলাই যায়৷
নীলের লেখার ধাঁচ এক কথায় অসাধারণ। কথার ফাঁকে ফাঁকে মজা করা জেনো তার স্বভাব বৈশিষ্ট্য। এ কারণে বারবার তাঁর লেখা পড়া যায়। ধৈর্য হারায় না। এ বইটিও তার ব্যতিক্রম নয়। তাঁর লেখা বারবার মুগ্ধ করে।
বইটা শুরু হয়েছে মহাব���শ্ব শুরুর গল্প দিয়ে৷ তারপর একে একে এসেছে মহাকর্ষের গল্প, আলোর গল্প, ছায়াপথের মাঝে ঘুরে-বেড়ানোর গল্প, আছে ডার্ক ম্যাটার ও ডার্ক এনার্জি, আছে পর্যায় সারণির ও অদৃশ্য মহাবিশ্বসহ নানান গল্প৷ তবে শেষ অধ্যায়টা সুন্দর। নামটাও। 'ওপরে তাকাও, চিন্তায় বড় হও'।
গল্প ও বৈজ্ঞানিক আলাপের পাশাপাশি তিনি বাক্স আকারে কিছু ফ্যাক্ট বা তথ্য আলাদা করে তুলে ধরেছেন। এ বিষয়টি ভালো লেগেছে। সেগুলো'��� মজার। ছোটদের ভালো লাগবে। তবে সবচেয়ে বেশি ভালো লেগেছে, 'বিজ্ঞানীরা রাগী বা বিজ্ঞানীরা সবকিছুই জানেন' এ বিষয় দূরীকরণের প্রচেষ্টাটি। এবং বিজ্ঞানীরা যা জানেন না বা এখনো জানতে পারেনি তা একদিন যে কিশোর বইটি পড়ছে সে আবিষ্কার করবে এই উৎসাহ দেয়ার বিষয়টি।
এবার অনুবাদ প্রসঙ্গে আসি। অনুবাদ সহজ সরল। অভিযোগের তেমন জায়গা নেই বললেই চলে৷ লক্ষ করলে বোঝা যাবে অনুবাদের সময় এটি 'কিশোরদের উপযোগী' বই এবং অনুবাদ'ও সেভাবে হতে হবে তা অনুবাদকের করোটিতে ছিলো। তবে আমি হালকা করে দু-একটি বিষয়ে ভালো বা মন্দ লাগা প্রসঙ্গে বলতে চাই। যদিও এসব একান্তই নিজের এবং এতে অনুবাদের ওপর তেমন প্রভাব পড়েনি বললেই চলে। তবে নিজের হলেও বলতে দোষ কি? অনুবাদকেও উপকারে আসলে আসতেও পারে!
এক্ষেত্রে প্রথমে বলতে এই এ বাক্যটিকে ঘিরে। ইংরেজিতে নীল লিখেছেন, ''For instance, I'd bet you’ve never greeted a black hole on the street.' আর বঙ্গানুবাদে, 'যেমন আমি বাজি ধরে বলতে পারি, রাস্তায় কোনো ব্ল্যাক হোল বা কৃষ্ণগহ্বরকে তুমি কখনো শুভেচ্ছা জানাও না।' তবে, যদি এভাবে লেখা হতো, 'যেমন আমি বাজি ধরে বলতে পারি, তুমি নিশ্চয়ই কোনো ব্ল্যাক হোলের সাথে রাস্তায় দেখা-সাক্ষাত করো না।' এটি অবশ্য খুবই ছোট বিষয়। এখানে Greet বা শুভেচ্ছার বিষয়টি হারিয়ে যায়। তবে পড়তে কিছুটা আরাম(?) লাগে৷
আবার একটি শব্দ হলো ফ্রেনেমি। মানে, ফ্রেন্ড + এনিমি বা বন্ধু + শত্রু। ফ্রেনেমি'র বাংলা আছে কিনা আমার জানা নেই। অনুবাদক একে লিখেছেন 'ফ্রেনেমি বা বত্রু' আমি অবশ্য শন্ধু শব্দটা ভেবেছিলাম যখন 'Astrophysics for People in a Hurry' বইটা পড়েছি। কিন্তু এটায় অভিযোগ করা বোকামি। আগেই বলেছি। অভিযোগের তেমন কিছু নেই।
তবে একটা বাক্য নিয়ে বলা যায়। সেটা হয়তো ওপরের দু'টো থেকে কিছুটা যুক্তিযুক্ত। মূল ইংরেজিতে এক অধ্যায়ের শুরুতে নীল লিখেছেন, ''When I was a kid, I was fascinated by a cartoon character named Mighty Mouse." বঙ্গানুবাদে: ছোটবেলায় মাইটি মাউস নামের কার্টুন চিত্রটা আমাকে আকর্ষণ করতো প্রবলভাবে।' ওখানে হয়তো লেখা যায়, 'ছোটবেলায় মাইটি মাউস নামের কার্টুন চিত্রটা আমাকে প্রবলভাবে আকর্ষণ করতো।'
আবার, 'I didn’t jumped any farther with the cape. I definitely didn’t fly.' বঙ্গানুবাদে: 'তার মানে, ওই জামা পরে আমি লাফ দিয়ে বেশি দূর যেতে পারিনি৷ সত্যি বলছি, উড়তে পারিনি আমি।' যদি লেখা হতো, 'তার মানে, ওই জামা পরে লাফ দিয়ে আমি বেশি দূর যেতে পারিনি৷ আর উড়তে তো পারি-ই নি/ উড়ার কথা বাদই দিলাম।'
এগুলোকে সমস্যা বলা ঠিক হবে কি-না জানি না। তবে এগুলো আহামরি নয়। এবং বইতে ২-১টি লাইনেই শুধু এসব আছে। আর ২টি বাংলা শব্দ চোখে পড়েছিলো যেগুলো কিছুটা কঠিন কিংবা সচরাচর দেখা যায় না। ছোটদের বই হিসেবে এ দুটো শব্দে ছাড় দেয়াই যেতো। তবে এটিও আহামরি নয়।
সবমিলিয়ে বলতে গেলে, এ-সব সুক্ষ্ম বিষয় অনুবাদের ওপর মোটাদাগে প্রভাব ফেলেনি। তবে আমার ধারণা এ বিষয় গুলোতে যদি হালকা হলেও উন্নতির সুযোগ থাকে তাহলে তা ভেবে দেখতে মন্দ কি!
পরিশেষে বলতে চাই, বইটির অনুবাদ আমার দেখা অন্যান্য বিজ্ঞান বইয়ের অনুবাদ থেকে সুন্দর ও সরল। তাছাড়া ছোটদের জন্যও যথেষ্ট বোধগম্য। ছোটদের জন্য বইয়ের তালিকায় এটি অনায়েসেই রাখা যায়।

My husband read the adult version of this same book and so I also grabbed up the audiobook “young people” version. This little book gave a good taste of what’s happening in the world of astrophysics without overburdening the reader. I like that Tyson shared that there are so many unanswerable questions and how important it is to be able to say “I don’t know.” He also took the time to introduce astrophysicists that many do not know of who contributed greatly to the field, such as Vera Rubin and Margaret Burbidge. The discussion of dark matter and dark energy are of special interest since there are still so many questions surrounding them. Additionally the cosmic perspective was very thought-provoking. A funny portion was about how various parts of astrophysics has been inappropriately used in comic books and movies, but he was very good spirited about this – including his sharing of how he’s portraying things accurately in the comics he’s currently writing/advising on. Very compact, but quite helpful for me.
