About the author

(William) Andrew Coulthard Robinson is a British author and former newspaper editor.

Andrew Robinson was educated at the Dragon School, Eton College where he was a King's Scholar, University College, Oxford where he read Chemistry and finally the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. He is the son of Neville Robinson, an Oxford physicist.

Robinson first visited India in 1975 and has been a devotee of the country's culture ever since, in particular the Bengali poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore and the Bengali film director Satyajit Ray. He has authored many books and articles. Until 2006, he was the Literary Editor of the Times Higher Education Supplement<?em>. He has also been a Visiting Fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge.

He is based in London and is now a full-time writer.

This solid book is great for beginners or secondary schoolchildren. Its quality is, however, marred by the following problems. First, it gives Sigmund Freud undue emphasis for his influence in the domain of psychology. Influential he most certainly was, but his ideas are questionable in light of empirical data and scientific scrutiny. This is noteworthy, since the status of psychology as a science remains in doubt, not least since the replication crisis is quite serious in the case of psychology. Second, the silly politically correct statements about eugenics in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when such an idea was mainstream, should not have been included. Eugenics remains in the law of some countries today. Moreover, although in the West, eugenics is now oftentimes equated with government cruelty and tyranny, people in practice actually love it, when they are the ones to make the decisions. Examples include human mate choice (most certainly not random), genetic counseling, prenatal genetic screening, and the selection of embryos during the process of in vitro fertilization (IFV).

"Los grandes científicos" es el título de este libro en castellano. Trata de minibiografías de diferentes científicos hechas por diferentes autores. Algunos ya los conocía, pero reconozco que he conocido más de uno del que no había oído hablar. Algunos otros los conocía, pero no había tenido ninguna referencia. Le pongo la nota máxima porque es un libro del que se aprende sin estar versado en las ciencias y toca científicos de todos los ramos. El punto negativo es que incluye fotos, por lo que hace al libro un "tocho" considerable.
