Diamonds can be deadly! In October 1897, a deadly serial killer returns to London, just as Lucy and Jack are planning their wedding and Sherlock is launching a high-stakes investigation at the request of diamond mogul Cecil Rhodes. With Watson, the Baker Street team soon find themselves enmeshed in a deadly conspiracy, with tentacles that reach far beyond the shadows of Whitechapel. Sherlock and Lucy will need more than their usual deductive brilliance to defeat their latest adversary, or else the case of the Ripper will be their last.
Anna Elliott is an author of historical fiction and fantasy. She enjoys stories about strong women, and loves exploring the multitude of ways women can find their unique strengths. She was delighted to lend a hand with the Sherlock & Lucy series, and thrilled to continue a new spin-off series featuring Becky and Flynn. Her first series, the Twilight of Avalon trilogy, is a retelling of the Trystan & Isolde legend. She wrote her second series, The Pride & Prejudice Chronicles , chiefly to satisfy her own curiosity about what might have happened to Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy, and all the other wonderful cast of characters after the official end of Jane Austen’s classic work.
Anna Elliott & Charles Veley are not known to me but they surely got my attention now as good authors with good imagination between the two they create excellent mysteries with many twists and beautiful conspiracies within conspiracies.
Simon Prebble & Wendy Termont King narrated this audiobook into perfection !
It's 1897 and Lucy and Jack are planning their wedding. But a body is found, making the police believe that Jack has returned. Meanwhile Holmes is asked to investigate the theft of diamonds belonging to Cecil Rhodes. And Watson is asked to solve a series of thefts. I really enjoy this series, good mysteries, strong characters and well-written. Although this is a standalone story I would recommend reading from Book One, if not already done so, to follow the development of the characters and their interplay. A NetGalley Book
This series keeps getting better with each book. The plot was great and I just love characters and as they develop through the series. I will keep reading the series
My love of all things Sherlock Holmes began on afternoons after mowing my uncles yard spent watching old movies on a local UHF station and seeing Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as the famed detective and his sidekick. For me Rathbone will forever be the Holmes I remember even if I’ve loved all others who’ve played the character. But the stories were limited to those written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and authors who have taken up his character have blown hot and cold. The series of books involving Holmes and the daughter he never knew he had, Lucy James, have been a delight.
This time around Lucy is in the middle of preparing her wedding to Jack Kelly, the London constable she loves. While this is going on more than one case is presented to her father that she in turn becomes involved in. The first is a series of killings taking place involving what could be Jack the Ripper returning after having terrorized the streets of London. Another is a potential diamond theft ring. As these things are occurring Watson and Lucy are called upon to help a socialite, a woman who was a friend of his wife, to raise funds for orphan girls. There is little doubt that somehow these cases will cross paths just as they have in the previous books in the series. Just how becomes the fun for the reader each turn of the page offers some new clue into the answer of how that will happen.
As with previous efforts in the series the book entertains, puzzles and holds your interest from the first page until the last. The character of Holmes remains the same as when Doyle wrote him with a bit of a twist as he realizes he has a daughter who tends to insert herself into the family business even if she’s actually an actress. The book will be enjoyed by fans of Sherlock Holmes as well as those who enjoy a good mystery to solve while reading. This book, as well as the entire series, is worth picking up and reading.
10/6/1897, # 221B Baker St. Mr. William “Sherlock” Scott Holmes (Scotland Yard consulting detective) & Dr. John Hamish Watson (widower, Sherlock's BMF. MD) learned that a young woman had been murdered in Whitechapel, E. London England. Lucy James (Sherlock's daughter) was a P/T investigative partner. Downing Street. Sherlock & Dr. Watson had an appointment with Sir Michael Hicks Beach (Chancellor of the Exchequer). DI Greg Lestrade (Scotland Yard) stopped by 1st to see the 2 of them.
The Mitre Square was the location where the 5th Ripper victim was found. The corpse is at the St. Thomas Hospital. Dr. Matthew Burleigh (Burleigh Clinic tubercular patients) & Commissioner/Sir Edward Bradford (Metropolitan PD) was there to greet the 3 of them. Mrs. Hudson landlady, Colonel Moran bomb terrorist, Bethnal Green School, Chancellor Michael Hicks Beach (Her Majesty’s Exchequer) & Cecil Rhodes (wealthy, diamond mine owner) explained to Sherlock & Dr. Watson that an increasing number of raw diamonds has gone missing from their mines. They would gladly supply Hatton Garden supplier/distributor, the diamond cutters, & the transportation/shipping companies records. Bethnal Green School for Orphaned Girls. Lady Amelia Scott (major benefactor) was holding a huge charity tea event. Everybody that was somebody was there. Sir Charles Warren was forced to resign over all the Ripper murders. What did a message in route Thomas Newman say? Jack had returned from Scotland Yard with the bad news that there were no leads as to where Lucy Jones might have been taken.
Will Lucy be found safe/sound?

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written 19th Century mystery book. It was extremely easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great 19th Century mystery movie, or better yet a mini-TV series. To be continued. An extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

Two of the several things that draw me to a book are Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper. Elliott and Veley have combined the two into a tangled web of murder and intrigue. If you haven't read the bio pages, Charles Veley and Anna Elliott are a father/daughter writing team where he writes Watson's journal entries and she writes Lucy James' journal entries. The writing meshes pretty seamlessly between the two. I did find an anomaly in THE RETURN OF THE RIPPER where Watson describes Mrs. Amelia Scott's eyes thusly: "I noticed that her eyes were a bright blue, very nearly a match for her electric blue dress." And, Lucy James, upon meeting Mrs. Scott offered this sketch: "I had never met Amelia Scott before today, but from what I had seen, I liked her. She was somewhere around forty, but still lovely, tall and slender, with pale skin and faint lines of laughter only just beginning to gather at the corners of her hazel-colored eyes." It was rather like I was channeling Holmes with this observation.
I do enjoy the various threads that the mysteries these two cook up seem to take a circuitous and somewhat tangled route so it looks like Sherlock and Lucy are working on multiple cases. If you follow along carefully, you will note how seemingly disparate clues all start pointing in a single direction.
The new regular characters in the series, Lucy James, Constable Jack Kelly, and his young sister Becky, are all quick and observant in ways that weren't necessarily so notable when Conan Doyle wrote Dr. Watson. It took more than one reading within the canon to realize that Watson often provided the spark that allowed Holmes to be brilliant. Although I am still loath to divulge the relationship of Lucy to Sherlock, it has been said often enough in the books descriptions that she is his daughter. As the stories progress, it is quite obvious that this particular apple did not fall far from the tree.
I would certainly encourage reading this series in order. In this way, you will get the benefit of learning each new character's story and how their introduction influences both Holmes and Watson.
Oh, yes… and I always shed a tear or two at weddings.
Over the past several years, there has been a growing number of novels dealing with Sherlock Holmes and another person ~ often a female. I have read many Sherlock pastiches with a daughter; the Sherlock & Lucy James books by Anna Elliott & Charles Veley rank high along Goldberg's Daughter of Sherlock Holmes series. Off the top of my head, the two arguable best Sherlock paired with another character historical mysteries may be Laurie King’s Russell and Holmes series and the Anna Kronberg Thrillers by German author Annelie Wendeberg (arguable of course). I do highly recommend that you read this series in order to be able to watch the characters evolve. Also, there are allusions to past events from previous stories.
Diamonds are forever; Diamonds can be deadly too! The story opens as just as Lucy and Jack are planning their wedding; also, Sherlock is launching an investigation regarding diamond mogul smuggling. During October 1897, a deadly serial killer returns to London ~ The Ripper. “The Return of the Ripper” has a well-crafted plot with multiple sub-plots with diamond smuggling, a women murdered in the dark of night, and Watson pulled into helping a home for wayward girls raise money. As with the previous books, the characters were developed well developed and there were enough twists and turns to keep one’s attention. This is a quick read and an enjoyable series. If you enjoy Sherlock matched with a young, strong, intelligent woman, then give this series a try.
I remain a fan of the audible series even thought the quality of the stories has been slipping. With two narrators for the two PoV(s) still putting in a solid performance overall. The story here kicks off with what appears to be a Jack the Ripper copy cat (or is he) that draws in Lucy and her father, who was otherwise involved in a case concerning stolen diamonds. As could be expected, the two cases quickly converge. While the portrayal of Sherlock is not particularly good, as a general mystery for Lucy is good enough to entertain and the weepingly relationship with her fiancee Jack (a police Sgt) has a Hallmark network feel to it. One minor quibble would be the typical Hollywood profession of love et al that happens in the middle of a mortal threat where time is an important factor (so yeah … lets hug and kiss and cuddle and then worry about the bomb on a timer … seriously can we please not do that?). So once again … not the strongest performance but after the last episode it was not the weakest either.
I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
~Disclaimer: I received a free audiobook copy of this book. ~
The story immediately draws the reader in with a suspenseful preface that features a manacled Lucy, hinting at the events to come. The book is narrated from both Lucy and Watson's perspectives, making for a well-rounded and engaging storyline.
While the book can be read as a standalone, readers who are familiar with the series will likely appreciate the character development and relationships that have been established throughout previous installments. The central plot of the novel revolves around the infamous Jack the Ripper killings and the theft of diamonds. Although this may not be the strongest book in the series, it is still a solid addition that delivers on suspense and mystery. The dual narration is a standout aspect of the book and continues to be well-executed. However, there are some minor discrepancies in the recording set up between the two narrators that have been noted in previous reviews.
I LOVED this book. I have always been a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. I have read bad attempts at continuing his story and some good ones. This one is amazing. The author perfectly captured the wit and sarcasm of Holmes. They captured the relationship between Watson and Holmes in a way that it could have been written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is deffinatley a series that all Holmes fans will love.
It is a series and this is book 7. I believe it could be a stand alone. Only brief mentions of the previous cases were made. I don't feel like I am missing anything by reading book 7 before book 1.
I was interested in reading this one for many reasons, The Ripper, Sherlock, and his daughter Lucy. I wasn't disappointed at all. The writing was a bit different style than I had currently been reading and it took me a little while to settle into the flow but once I did I was hooked. Sherlock and the group were working multiple angles to events that were occurring and it was very interesting to see how it all came together. Lucy was a strong woman and Jack supported her as well as Holmes and Watson. Action as well as deduction took turns in this book and worked out well and to a satisfying end. I look forward to reading more by this author.
I have always distrusted books which try to add new characters to the Holmes-Watson dynamic, but here it's done to perfection. Lucy is a great, attractive character, smart and believable. And Holmes and Watson are their true selves, both their characters perfectly captured.
This audiobook can be listen as a stand-alone story, as there are only brief mentions to previous cases and none it's related to the current one.
The story itself has a very well constructed plot and will keep you hooked until the very end.
And the narration adds to the general enjoyment of the book. A very recommended audiobook.
Sherlock is asked by Cecil Rhodes to investigate some stolen diamonds that seem to be funding some terrorist plans. Meanwhile, the Ripper appears to be back as well. Lucy is getting ready for her wedding and her new home. Watson is asked to help an old school friend of Mary's to promote her charity for unfortunate girls gain donors by writing in the Strand. In other words, there is a lot going on. Lucy makes some major personal discoveries about Sherlock in a nice sweet way. And Watson is getting chapters again in this book which makes for a nice second voice and storytelling method. Lovely little pastiche
Not just diamonds are forever . . . Anna came up with the idea for this one, based on some research she'd done on the historical Whitechapel Ripper. But we decided to offset the grim Ripper themes with a wide range of hopes: Cecil Rhodes hopes Sherlock can stop a ring of diamond thieves. Lucy hopes to have Jack's wedding ring on her finger soon. Innocent orphan girls in Whitechapel hope for new lives after a charity trains them for service in wealthy families across the Empire. And even Watson has hopes -- to help the charity by using his writing skills, and maybe, just maybe, to find romantic happiness. So it's not just diamonds that are forever. Hope springs eternal.
I must admit I’ve read these books out of order. 🙈 I wasn’t sure which way they went until I came to post my reviews. But that being, it wasn’t hard to keep up with them. I really enjoyed this new tale on Sherlock Holmes and his daughter. They are adventurous and full of intrigue and mystery. I love following along and trying to solve who-done-its.
I definitely recommend this series for the adventurous type or whoever has always loved Sherlock Holmes
This is a fantastic series, and really can not recommend it enough. I will be making the recommendation for my library to purchase this series. Lucy is a very strong character. A good book to sit down and read in one sitting since you won't want to put it down. While you can read this without reading the others, I think you'll enjoy it more by reading the books in order. They are all terrific so it is time well spent.
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review. - Loved this book 5+ stars
We're in Victorian London for this seventh adventure. Lucy James is planning her wedding and Sherlock Holmes has a new client: diamond mogul Cecil Rhodes. But when bodies are found in Whitechapel, and threats of yet another murder alarm the city, the Baker Street team knows they have no choice. They must catch the killer. This was the first time I’d read this series, so I wasn’t familiar with these characters. However, I still enjoyed following them on this mystery. I can’t wait to read more from this series. I recommend. **I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
Excellent stand-alone tale, perhaps best appreciated read in sequence with the rest of this series. You do not need to be a devoted Holmes fan to enjoy this book! (Though devoted Holmes fans should rejoice!)
Strong characters, great plotting and pacing, and no loose ends. NOT a cliffhanger! True to the original characters, with additional new characters who have made me love the originals even more.
Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys mysteries, historical fiction, or thrillers. Clean and satisfying, for the reading pleasure of any mystery lover. Enjoy!
As a father of a son and a daughter I am well aware how concerned a Dad be about his little girl that stays his little girl as long as he continues to breath. My little girl is now 45 and lives 900 miles away but is never more than an hour from passing through my mind. I cannot imagine not having the chance to raise her but I know how happy I would be to meet her and love her when the chance would come to me. Well done!! I am quite glad that Tara and I had that time Sherlock and Lucy didn't.
Another complicated book by Anna Elliott and Charles Veney. Lucy is not yet married, but Jack and his little sister Becky are very close. In this, it looks like a copycat killer to Jack the Ripper has come to commit killings similar to the originals 8 years earlier. These are all mixed up with a charity girl's school and Watson's writing skills. Lucy is even kidnapped and endures a horrific imprisonment in which she becomes ill. Sherlock is shot and knifed and almost dies of sepsis. I loved the book.
Another will written British mystery thriller adventure murder novel by Anna Elliot and Charles Veley book seven in the Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James Mystery. Once again Sherlock, Lucy, and Watson are involved in the investigation of a murder mystery that is copying the Ripper to the unexpected conclusion. I recommend this novel and series to readers of mysteries and fans of Sherlock Holmes. Enjoy the adventure of reading 👓 or listening 🎶 to novels 👍🔰🏡😊 2022 🏰
Very good story structure with the character's individual narratives telling the story. I think ACD would be very pleased to see the continuing of the Holmes/Watson legacy and, updating the characters as well to include Lucy....portraying Holmes as a father is opening a door towards many more entertaining, interesting stories. Looking forward to the next book from these authors.
There are 2 or 3 more stories before the , hopefully, complete short stories collection, at least to date. I am what is known as a binge reader as well as binge watcher, so have went though the stories somewhat quickly. I am still unsure about him having a daughter, but do not feel that it detracts, and overall seems in keeping with the collections I own, unfortunately only mostly in hardback, soft back, and a couple or so audio versions.
While Lucy and Jack are planning their wedding it appears that Jack the Ripper has returned. There are multiple sub stories worked into this with diamond smuggling, a women murdered in Jack’s precinct holding sell, and Watson pulled into helping a home for wayward girls raise money. It is a little long but has many twists and turns to keep you guessing with a surprise ending. I look forward to reading the next book
Without any disrespect to the original characters, these authors have created believable stories (well, for us Sherlock fans) with twists and turns that make them hard to set down - as I can attest to several very late nights. The baddies are horrible, and the younger protagonists never lose their attractiveness in love, despite dangers, injuries and courageous struggles. Highly recommended!
This mystery represents great team work between Holmes and company and LeStrade and his men. The criminals also have banded together all for the goal of two small bags of diamonds. With multiple female victims reminiscent of the Ripper's victims, Holmes doesn't see the connection to the diamonds. It is only when Lucy is kidnapped that that becomes evident. It is a fast-paced story which I enjoyed very much.
An interesting explanation of the identity of Jack the Ripper intertwined with the growing depth of the attachment between Lucy James and her fiancee. He seems almost perhaps a little too accepting of her risk taking behavior but their mutual acceptance of their interdependence is fun to watch.
I have enjoyed the Sherlock Holmes stories & this is written in a very similar style. The characters definitely seem like a continuation from the original Sherlock Holmes stories. This is the first of this series that I've read & would like to read some of the others
Stolen diamonds, missing girls, a possible repeat of Jack the Ripper and new murdered victims, some stolen items, a girls' home to make young women into governesses, and the usual exploits of Lucy, Becky, S Holmes, Jack-the policeman who is to wed Lucy: all make up a terrific story that is riveting to follow and another one in this special series that should not be missed.
