I agreed with much of what the author had to say but so frequently, the author loses me completely with her life illustrations. Stories about wanting a new outfit and then deciding to give the money away and having God come through and provide her with a new outfit somehow just really runs me the wrong way. I would really like to connect with Mrs. Terkherst but I just find her too American and comfortably middle class to connect to her writing.
This book is probably a great place to start if you have never studied obedience, but it is not a comprehensive resource. I felt the writing was a bit fluffy and relied too heavily on anecdotes. I would have liked to seen more Scripture and more time spent on how to walk out obedience when it is hard work. (ie., loving the unloveable, walking in obedience through times of hardship or conflict, etc...)
I really enjoyed this book. I read through it first and plan to go through it again and answer the bible study questions. It is a book I needed to read right now. Although some may think some of her examples may be simplistic, I like most of the examples she gives of her own life because they demonstrate how one can see God in even the small things in life. We all have those kinds of stories and I always enjoy to hear them. I recommend this book to any woman who is looking to understand how to have a closer relationship with Jesus.
I really enjoyed the raw honesty and conviction conveyed in this book. Lysa has a way of making God’s word come alive and making it applicable to our daily lives. Already bought another one by her to start tomorrow because I just can’t get enough!
Narrator Thoughts – I thought this woman did a wonderful job of bringing this book to life. With a good mix of emotion and clarity she read this book and put her heart into it. I thoroughly enjoyed her.
Book Thoughts – I was so excited when this book came up for review. A few months ago I read Unglued and was so encouraged by it. This book was also so encouraging. I love how real Lysa is and how much she opens her heart. She’s so real and I’m encouraged by that. This book made me feel like Lysa came alongside me and encouraged me. With stories, quotes, and verses this book blends together in a beautiful story of surrender to Christ. When we say yes to His leadings, great things happen. All that He has becomes ours and all that we are becomes His. I enjoyed her encouragement to test the thoughts that come to us. Many times I want to run ahead and do whatever I feel, but God does call me to see what His plan is. I’m thankful for people like Lysa to be real with us and encourage us to say Yes to God.
What Happens When Women Say Yes to God is about surrendering your whole life to God. Through scripture and her own personal experience, the author is a guide to what can happen when you develop a complete relationship with God. From the beginning chapter the author uses examples of her own life, struggles and all, to bring the reader along her own journey of finally Saying Yes To God in a whole and complete way. This book is filled with simple wisdom and revelation to aid the reader in making that decision in their own life to Say Yes To God. This is by far one of the best books I've read. Her ability to open up God's desire for my life helped make me want to read some chapters over and over. I read this book in conjunction with the P31ministry dot org online bible study. I would recommend this book to any woman (or man) who wants to take their life in Christ to the next level.
I did this as a bible study and really enjoyed it. It was accompanied by a video where Lisa spoke each week and she's someone with extraordinary stories of her life and she's the kind of person you would just want to be friends with. The main ideas that jumped out at me are: 1-A daily prayer that states, "God I want to see You today. I want to hear You today. I want to know when You're speaking to me today. God I want to know You. Prepare my heart to say yes to You. 2- God's will = what God wants us to BE. To figure out God's will for my life, I need to be joyful, prayerful and thankful. If we do these things then what God wants us to do will unfold from there. Now I'm going to find some other things to ready by her.
I am a big fan of Lysa TerKeurst. This title is now my 5th book by her and also the earliest work that I have read by her thus far.
When I read non-fiction Christian living, I try to gravitate towards the deeper topics. Life is messy, but we can apply others’ God-given wisdom to our lives when we read their testimonies and teachings.
Though this book has a good topic (radical obedience), and I agree with her main theme, I found many of her anecdotes to be surface level and/or filler. I found that most (not all!) of her examples seemed to be “first world problems”, so it was harder for me to connect to her writing.
The Bible speaks much on the topic of obedience, so I wished that Lysa took more of a scholarly approach in her book and used Scripture to practically lay out how to walk in radical obedience (especially in difficult circumstances such as forgiveness). Using mainly personal stories as evidence was just not sufficient for me.
With that being said, I still liked the book and thought she had some great points! I will continue to read her other works. I highly recommend some of her more recent publications such as “The Best Yes,” “It’s Not Supposed to be This Way,” “Forgiving What You Can’t Forget,” and “Good Boundaries and Goodbyes”!
I just think, like many authors, that her books have gotten even better as she’s published and walked further with Christ 🧡
Love, love, love!! I don't know what else to say about this book except how much I love it. Lysa has a great writing style that kept me wanting to read more and dive deeper. I really appreciated the personal examples she included throughout the text...not because I think everything is perfect and happy and we'll always be able to see exactly what God is doing, but because it shows me more of how to look for God and how my radical obedience can translate into something so much bigger than me. Excited to start applying what she said and becoming radically obedient to Christ in my life, so I may have the kind of relationship with our Lord that is described throughout this book.
Ironically, I felt like the example she used of Mary pouring perfume on Jesus near the end of Lysa's book was a "God moment" for me-being that we have just this week been studying the same passage in Awana with my daughter-and was God's way of saying "you're on the right path studying this book. Use it, apply it. I've connected these to show you I'm here." Such a simple, small blessing that I could have skimmed over, but stopped to notice.
What Happens When Women Say Yes to God was a good nonfiction read. It definitely has some truths that I (and I think most women) needed to hear and be reminded of. While I didn't necessarily agree with everything in the book, it did challenge me at times and I liked it for the most part. I'm glad I read it!

Overall I liked this book on obedience. It used examples to show that God gives more after he asks us to give something up. It almost reminded or prosperity teachings in a way, but my main issue was with the examples used just because I couldn't relate to them. They seemed to show small, insignificant inconveniences as problems. Not saying the author didn't experience real problems, just that the examples she used seemed a bit shallow and small compared to people's real struggles. But at one point she did say how God can use even small decisions to touch people's lives. I liked the ending more than anything.
Lots of great insights in this book and TerKeurst is so down-to-earth in her writing that I can imagine having coffee with her. Because it was a short-term Kindle loan, I wasn't able to delve into the Bible study portions at the end of each chapter like I would have wanted, but I still took away a lot to chew on.
Maybe it is because I listened to this after finishing "Knowing God" by J.I. Packer and beginning "When I Don't Desire God" by John Piper, but this book was just... weak. It was watered down and often actually seemed silly. I'm sure there were some good points and encouragements, but they were lost in the cons of this book.
I really enjoyed this bible study. I especially liked herintro into giving away bibles on the air plane. It just shows that you can reach people no matter where you are. Even 15000 feet in the air
This book was gifted to me by a lovely friend who knew I needed some encouragement through a difficult season---jumping into a career field I never planned on entering or desired to join. I was hesitant going into the book, because I wanted to hold on to bitterness and complaining. However, I took the leap of faith and read to listen for God's speech to me.
This book helped guide me to realizing I could not sustain a life of discontent without seeing repercussions in my mental health, spiritual life, and friend group. I needed to look at my new circumstances through God's eyes. What was His reasoning? What is His purpose? How has He planned for me to grow or to help others in this season? I will continue to uncover answers as I step into a new mentality for my job. I am trusting that the Lord has a plan that is meant for my individual as well as others' good.
While this book had one too many examples that left me wondering how many of these were real, I am grateful for Lysa's insight. Here's to a joyful year!
I wasn’t going to write a review after reading some of the comments but I felt led to. I loved how the writer shared her what to others insinuated were “silly” but those simple struggles helped me see that what I consider my struggles everyone has and it’s ok! It’s ok to have silly struggles because they lead us toward God not away from. I find that women are very critical of other woman and very judgmental and therefore I’ve stopped going to women’s Bible study, women’s speaking engagements, etc. because of the way women handle themselves. I learned quite a bit from Lysa’s book and found myself really absorbing her words and my heart felt less heavy.
As someone who only started reading TerKeurst's work more recently (Good Boundaries and Goodbyes) , this book was a journey back in time.
While I wasn't overly impressed with the book, what stood out to me was the transformation that TerKeurst has undergone since writing this book. Her growth and testimony serve as a testament to the power of God in our lives.
This book was so so for me. I really liked some of it and other parts I didn't like. This wasn't my favorite book by Lysa. I did enjoy a lot of it and appreciated the over all message. This was 3 1/2 stars for me.

My Review:
If you are a young woman of faith you feel like the whole world is opened up to you. But if God has set you apart for an even more important stand out of the faith it can sometimes feel like a 2 ton boulder on your back. That is why it is imperative for you to be mentored by some really strong women of faith to help you through these times especially the trying ones. They are there to show you the way and to hopefully show you what they have learned whether it be through trial or triumph.
This book entitled What Happens When Young Women Say Yes to God is an excellent example of that mentoring by two women that have been there. One; Lysa Terkeurst, a woman that has bridged the gap between glorifying God and showing other women that it truly takes a strong faith to withstand everyday challenges. And two; Hope Terkeurst, a young woman that has begun her journey deep in the throws of mission work to show us all to never fear as long as God has your back you can take on the world if you have to.
This mother and daughter team have joined together to put into action a devotional for those ladies that need some uplifting and encouraging. Because many times those woman that have been called to do extraordinary things for God are in a very lonely, discouraged place. This devotional is based on the Y.E.S. Factor, Y-Your, E-Extraordinary, S-Story. A somewhat unique way to pattern your life, your ministry, and your calling to be exactly what God wanted you to be.
**Disclosure** This book was provided to me at no charge for my honest review by Harvest House Publishers.
God put this book in my hands at the exact right time. In fact, I believe he ordered it for me. Let me explain.
I work at Barnes and Noble (the best job 🙌🏻). I was at my shift about a month ago, thinking about how the night before I began to really doubt whether I've ever heard God's voice. A lot of things have happened lately that make it look like my life is going in a different direction than where I've thought God has very clearly told me it would go. So, I was discouraged. I was working in a Bible study that told me to sit in silence and listen for God's direction, and I felt nothing. Did I have the ability to hear God? What if everything I thought was God's voice was just the sound of my own thoughts?
I was looking through the religion section at work like I sometimes do, and I found a little booklet (kind of hidden in the stacks) by Lysa TerKeurst called Is God Speaking to Me? I was floored. I opened it up and on the first page it said, “Have you ever wondered if God still speaks to us today? Or even more so…whether what you’re hearing is really God speaking to you, or just your own thoughts?” I literally couldn’t believe it. God placed this book in my hands because of all my doubts from the night before. I skimmed some more and saw that the booklet was comprised of excerpts taken from Lysa’s book What Happens When Women Say Yes to God. I knew we didn't have that book in the store, but I thought it was worth ordering, so I looked it up on our computer system…and we got in one copy that day. I could have cried. God freaking ordered this book for me and had it arrive this exact day because he knew I’d need it. I immediately found out what box it was in, dug it out, and bought it. I asked God’s forgiveness for doubting that he spoke to me.
This book was incredible and exactly what I needed. I had chills through many of Lysa's stories about how God had spoken to her in ways that made no sense until she followed through in obedience. I am inspired to live my life in radical obedience as well.
Review #1 - 1/2019 I have greatly benefitted from Lysa's books over the last several months. Her "It's Not Supposed to be This Way" (see review) was incredible and helped me immensely after a hard breakup. I've been diving into her other books ever since!
Many of these types of books will be ones that I revisit so my reviews the first time around may not be as good as they should be (or maybe they will be!) and so I will most likely do a second review or even a third each time I read them.
"What Happens..." was a solid book. I tried to read a chapter every night and wanted to do the questions at the end of each chapter, but I think I will wait to do them during my second read through. At a time in my life where saying yes to God is hard, this helped me realize that I can say yes whenever and still be apart of the plan He has for me. But saying yes needs to come no matter what I feel - comfort, hurt, betrayal, confidence, certainty or anything else.
My only critique in any of her books is her use of The Message translation. In my opinion, The Message waters down what the Bible says and cheapens the words. I usually use my Bible app or grab my Bible to read the ESV or NLT version instead. Not to say that The Message gets it wrong, I just don't think it does the best to get the original message across.
