Never too late for love.

Three-hundred-and-fifty-year-old warlock Tikron must find his true love or forfeit his immortality. But if he hasn’t found his ideal mate in all these centuries, the prospects don’t look too bright.

That is, until he sees mathematician Richard Beaumont. It’s love at first sight and Tikron’s future just got a whole lot brighter.

Except Richard doesn’t believe in love at first sight. He doesn't believe in love at all. He certainly doesn’t believe in magic. His life is ruled by statistics and logic, and they tell him a relationship with Tikron has only a 10 percent chance of success. That’s unacceptable—even if the attraction between them is off the charts.

With his powers waning and the clock ticking down, Tikron’s last hope is showing Richard the true meaning of magic.

It's been an amazing journey since DSP first contracted Lorcan's Desire in January 2011. I've published 2 free reads with the M/M Romance group, my back list is growing, met some great people and have made some amazing friends.
I'm still in shock that I'm listed among the many talented authors at Dreamspinner Press! The little voice in the back of my head is screaming, "You are so out of your league."

Overly simplistic, this was standard Beyond fare.

As per the blurb, Tikron needs to find true love before a curse ends his immortality. Of course, the one destined for him doesn’t believe in magic (both literal and figurative) which is what Tikron is all about as he’s a 349 year old warlock.

At times, this was OTT as Tikron is an unrelenting stalker in trying to convince straight and narrow mathematician Richard to take a chance on him. This had some humor, some “brotherly” immaturity between Tikron and his bestie, and a sense of awe and wonder as Richard slowly awakens to all the universe’s impossibilities. The execution and the conclusion, while ultimately romantic, were anticlimactic and too easy for my jaded self.

Regardless, this still delivers the required HEA. There never was any doubt about that.

At three hundred and forty-nine, warlock Tikron has until his next birthday to find true love or lose his immortality forever. Easier said than done though, right, seeing how he hasn’t lucked out in the love department in three centuries and now only has a month to find “the one”.

Tikron and Ry, his bestie of forever, do a lot of research on the matter, trying to find a loophole, in case Tikron runs out of time. But as chance would have it, the love of Tikron’s life happens to be sitting in a cafe they visit one serendipitous evening, in the form of socially awkward mathematician, Richard.

Tikron may think his luck has finally turned around, but Richard, ruled by logic and practicality, rejects his advances at every turn. Now, Tikron really needs a miracle—and maybe a little magic—to convince Richard that their connection is real and true love is worth fighting for.

This had the bones of being a really great story, but for me it never really got there. I liked the polar opposites dynamic and I appreciated that Tikron had to work for it in order to even get Richard to agree to a date, but the overall chemistry was kind of lacking, in my opinion.

I liked Richard quite a bit, with his no nonsense mentality, ruled by order and predictability. And I liked how he began to expand his small world as he slowly fell for Tikron’s charms and his world of magic. I even liked his dog, who provided the most heart this story had, as far as I’m concerned.

What I wasn’t sold on was Tikron himself. He and bestie Ry came across as exceedingly immature and dude-bro-y, which really felt off considering the centuries of life they had under their belts. I also hated that the start of the book had to mention, and mention again and again, that they messed around on occasion .

Honestly, the romance lost me pretty quickly early on, and then it was just a simple and easy ride to the finish line. However, I can’t contemplate rating any lower, as the story was well-written and well-paced, adding a touch of magic and charm (on Richard and his dog’s part) to my reading week.

If May-December relationships stipulate a minimum of eleven years of an age difference, this age gap romance meets the requirements without question. Tikron has a big birthday coming up…his three hundred and fiftieth. Yep. And sadly, he was cursed with finding love before then or the light of his life will finally be put out. But dating isn’t easy when you’re a warlock. It’s not as if he can announce his secret on a first date and to be honest, he hasn’t found anyone that has encouraged him to share it with…yet. Until he runs into Richard and everything changes. Complications continue as the man of his affection doesn’t believe in love at first sight. He doesn’t believe in true love or soul mates either. And he certainly doesn’t believe in magic. Richard lives in a highly logical world. He is a mathematician and is ruled by practical facts and solid evidence. Emotions are messy and he has no time for them. He likes order and consistency. But when the breathtaking stranger continues to appear, he’s forced to accept his life is missing something…or someone.

What's to like: This is a fairly low angst story which worked well in between my angstier reads. The biggest conflict is time, which is running out. Tikron must work his magic…literally. He can’t explain what it is about the standoffish scientist that bewitches him but he can’t deny the pull. Richard is distant and rather chilly, but he’s content with his solitude. In fact, he’s not alone. His roommate and best friend fulfill all his emotional needs. Makes no difference that he’s his dog. At least he thought he was content. Tikron is relentless and utterly adorable in his courting. It didn’t take long and I was swooning and thankfully, so was Richard.

What's to love: Although Richard is prickly at first, his cold exterior melts along with his heart. I loved how Tikron just knew he was the one and never gave up. And I especially adored his family; both his best friend, Ry and his mother. From outrageous critter dances to heart-wrenching rescues, I was enthralled from the beginning to the end. I loved how the magical elements were woven into the story. I enjoyed the smooth writing and the captivating cast. I loved how utterly and completely they both fell. All in all, it was executed marvelously.

Beware of: Age gap…like a big one. Opposites attract…with a little persuasion. And a warlock woes not only a cute pup but his master too.

This book is for: If you believe in magic and the unpredictability of true love, this magical story is just what you’re looking for.

I had an okay time reading Calculated Magic.

The blurb was interesting but somehow the execution fell a bit flat. It took quite sometime(almost to the end) to warm up to Richard and Tikron seemed a bit too pushy initially for my tastes. However, as the story progressed, my opinion of both men became a more positive one.

With the story proper, I think more could’ve been done with the world building, story depth and the pacing . Questions concerning the genesis of the immortal race, the source of their powers and their possible limitations should’ve at least been touched upon.

Also, I felt there should’ve been at least one scene with Mysdus or any of the other elders to give the story more depth.

The true star of the book was Ry, a secondary character, who kept stealing scenes whenever he appeared. I kept looking forward to his appearances more and more.

All in all, this wasn’t bad, but I cannot honestly say it was anything other than okay.

I liked the way this story moved. Tikron’s used to having his pick of partners and Richard’s a die-hard skeptic. Tikron’s wooing is generally all wrong—even bringing Richard flowers to which he is allergic—but Richard can see his efforts and respects that Tikron’s genuinely interested in him. Their forays into the physical are sweet and tentative. And, Tikron’s okay with it. He knows he needs to win Richard’s heart, not just his body. It seems the more Richard is shown that magic exists, the more he’s willing to jump into this new understanding of his world. He feels special, to know these secrets, and cherished by Tikron’s affection. It’s just as magical, watching Richard come to terms with a loving partnership—one he believes is even more powerful than that of his parents. His ideas of logic and statistics aren’t tossed aside, but they do give way to a more well-rounded perspective. Tikron’s growth comes from recognizing that he might be too late to find love, but never giving up hope that Richard might care for him. During their month-long courtship, there are moments of sweet intimacy and Tikron resigning himself to the end of his days. Not that Richard will allow it—once he learns the scope of Tikron’s curse.

What a delightful and yeah, magical story this was. I had so much fun reading this opposites attract story of a centuries old warlock looking to break the curse of an unrequited love placed on him and finding the most extraordinary man of logic to fall for. Soul mates of any kind is a weakness trope for me and this was a pure pleasure to read.
“How is this possible?”
“Magic.”
“Impossible. There is no such thing as magic,”
“Nothing is impossible if you believe.”

Told in the dual POV’s of our fated couple, we meet our Warlock Tikron first as he is looking through old texts and obscure manuscripts to find a way to break the curse Mysdus (the leader of a clan of immortals and an extremely powerful warlock) put on him when Mysdus couldn’t hook up with Tikron’s mother. Tikron has until his 350th birthday which is in 30 days to break the curse or he loses his immortality. When Tikron’s friend with sometime benefits, Ry, decides they need a break from their search and get some food, Tikron’s life gets turned upside down. On their walk to get their grub on, Tikron feels a pull to walk into a bakery and finds himself drawn to a man inside. He can’t explain why he is smitten, yes smitten, by this guy because he is not Tikron’s usual type, but he knows he has to meet him.

Richard Beaumont is Tikron’s exact opposite when we first meet him. He’s steadfast in his routine and being a mathematician, is all about numbers and logic, but Richard is lonely. Richard doesn’t realize that Tikron has been staring at him until Andrea (who works at the bakery) sits down and tells him and Richard goes into what I now call, Richard Mode. The guy is sweet, but so lost in his logic that he dismisses the first attempt Tikron makes at hitting on him. He also blows the second opportunity with Tikron and with this Dreamspun Beyond line, I wasn’t ready for him to be so stubborn and starchy. Yet, when Richard makes a call to his mom to ask about flirting, it all makes sense with the parental responses he gets. Just trust me when I saw Richard’s family are all on the same page.
How could someone not believe in magic? […] One only had to watch a sunset or a baby take its first breath to know that magic happened every second of every day. It was in the wind, the trees, the ground, the very breath taken.

What makes this book fun though is the fact Richard doesn’t believe in magic when magic is exactly what Tikron is. I loved that Tikron didn’t realize who Richard was and what he could represent even though he was searching for the very thing; to find his true love. Watching the slow progress Tikron makes as he begins to basically woo Richard was sweet and when he finally gets to show Richard the magic he can perform, the relationship moves forward. Watching Richard bloom with acceptance of magic was wonderful and seeing him fall for Tikron was beautiful.

Ry, Tikron’s best friend is the ultimate scene stealer and I found myself wanting more and more of him and wouldn’t mind reading his book one day. I wish we could have seen a bit of the dude who placed the curse on Tikron but the end was delightful and wrapped the story up nicely.

This was an interesting world that Peterson has created. The magical tie-in wasn't the standard vamp, were or what-not. The history of the warlocks (sorta) is captivating and I love the dimensional travel aspect. All the above mentioned are just the backdrop of the main plot point- that the ageless immortal has found himself cursed by a wanna-be step-father who is using his intended's love for her child as a way to entrap her. The son (our MC) does not want his mother to sacrifice her happiness for his life (as to him, that would be just as good as her dying herself) and tries to break the curse. In walks a character that lives a life regimented upon data and facts who has no room for even the possibility of magic. To say the least, it's a journey for the two to accept each other, and ultimately, deny the curse. The story was well thought out and I hope that the other characters will get their own installment.

I love me an opposites-attract story! Tikron and Richard were both charming in their own way but both so very different. Tikron's ego was a little through the roof and Richard was a bit of a socially awkward nerd. But together these characters worked.

It was nice to see Richard come out of his nerdy shell a bit and embrace the magic that Tikron was showing him. I was intrigued by the hints of the world that Tikron and Ry were a part of. Ry was also pretty entertaining and I am wondering if we will get his story sometime in the future! If so, I hope we get to dive into this world a little more in his book!

The storyline about Tikron was interesting and I wish we got a little more of that in the story. I hoped to see just a bit more angst in relation to that, but I still enjoyed this low drama book.

Richard is a regimented mathematician. His life is ruled by logic and a strictly adhered to schedule. Saying he could use some fun or a spark of life is an understatement. His life changes when he meets Tikron.

Tikron is an almost 350 year old warlock who is living under a death sentence. He has until his birthday to find true love or his immortality ends. While Tikron is wealthy, magical and enjoys life, he has walled off his heart. He lost someone special in the Civil War and has never let anyone close. All that changes when he sees Richard, and he no longer cares about the whole birthday of doom. He focuses on Richard's happiness.

From the first meeting, this book dips into the cute and sweet with an adorable dog named Albert tossed into the mix. It is a fun read with some minor angst involving Albert. At the end both men, learn to let go, embrace and celebrate life. Calculated Magic is not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

I mistakenly thought, looking down my eye glasses, that any book as simple as SJD Peterson’s Calculated Magic might not connect with me. Apparently I was thinking a bit too much like Richard, a main character.Since I’d never read SJD I underestimated her, as she pulled a rabbit out of the hat and her pages smoked.

Richard is a mathematician, raised by his equally genius parents to value reasoning, predictability, and frugality. His sparing, unemotional lifestyle is meant to highlight his career while avoiding entanglements. “Equations were logical; people rarely were,” he thinks to himself.

Richard is too entrenched to recognize his loneliness. Readers understand him better after he meets Tikron, a more vibrant, brawnier man than he generally prefers, which SJD informs us is, “cute, smart and mute.” He calls his mom for reassurance, who tells his dad, “‘Richard has experienced sexual stimuli to someone outside his normal parameters of attraction.'” Ouch!
Tikron is an immortal warlock who has walled himself off from romance after losing his last beloved during the Civil War. Since then, Mysdus, head of his clan, has cursed Tikron. Mysdus, who is sufficiently powerful to create a death curse, wants to marry Tikron’s mom. Unless she weds him (unwillingly) or Tikron finds true love by his 350th birthday, one month away, Tikron is scheduled to die.

At this point, Tikron has started to wonder if death might be okay. As he tells his best friend, Ryxium, “‘I’m tired of watching people we care about grow old and die. It’s a vicious cycle: meet, care, die, move, repeat. I’m so weary of it all, and yet, at the end of the day, I’m a coward. I don’t want to die.'”

That’s when Tikron and Ryxium encounter Richard, and Tikron’s heart is revived. But Richard seems impervious to seduction; it’s his training. Can Tikrum quickly convince Richard that magic really exists, especially in its most important form – Love?

Instalove is a necessary plot device, given the one-month time frame, but it is referred to as “invisible threads” between the men, suggesting a paranormal element. In fact, each time an aspect of magic is introduced, the ethical constraints on its use are emphasized. That’s how it dawned on me. ‘Calculated Magic’ is a mortality fable, examining which powers actually make life worthwhile.

Ryxium is written as the court jester. “Ry, bless his heart, was a great friend, but a bit of a scatterbrain. Flash something shiny in front of him, and off he went, chasing it,” Tikrum notes to himself. As with most jesters, Ry’s silliness hides deeper wisdom. Of their relationship, SJD writes, “The more stress, the more immature they seemed to become. It was a great way to lighten a mood. A far better way to deal with difficulties than crying or pickling their livers from overindulging in alcohol.”

Starting with the quotes before each chapter, such as, “Be a seeker of everyday magic,” ‘Calculated Magic’ reminds readers that life’s most important pursuit is to treasure the pleasures in front of us, most specifically any love on our path.

As Tikron faces the possibility of death, he follows the magic, reveling in his attraction to Richard.“Each single moment defined living, not the length of said life.”

By the end I saw Calculated Magic as a humorous Zen Koan, akin to the act of staring at a wall in meditation – the simplest of acts is the most difficult, and can change one very profoundly. Or as SJD indicates, “Walk barefoot. Listen to the wind. Drink in the moon. Be magic.”

This book was an enjoyable read and funny at times. Tikron is a long-lived warlock, currently coming up on a deadline with a curse that requires him to find his true love or die. Unfortunately, he's waited to the last minute to try to remove it. He doesn't really think he can find love in less than a month and his past hurts don't make him really read to open his heart up again.

Richard keeps his head down and avoids people. Numbers and logic make sense; emotions do not. Other than his puppy, he's very isolated, yet thinks that he's better off that way. After seeing how his parents interacted with Richard, I felt really bad for him. I could see why he was the way he was, but was immensely happy to see him start smiling and laughing because of Tikron's antics. Tikron was persistent, but never pressured Richard with word of the curse hanging over his head. Tikron's attempts to get Richard to see more of the magic of the world were incredibly funny at times. The sassy squirrel was crazy and definitely an attention grabber. I liked these two together.

This book became more fun once Richard has his epiphany. His turn around seemed a bit too easy, but the cracks were already forming and I think he could see that he was much happier with the changes he was making. It was great to see him start to enjoy life and see the wonder in the world. I also really liked Ry, Tikron's best friend. He and Tikron have a great relationship and their teasing of each other helped keep things lighter.

Tikron is a warlock just shy of his 350th birthday. This is a deadline for his immortality due to a curse placed upon him by his coven’s head warlock. The only way to break it is to find love. Tikron comes off as a sort of playboy in the beginning of the story but then he sees Richard and all that screeches to a halt. Richard is a man all about routine. He believes that love is a frivolous, baseless, pointless emotion. He avoids all human companionship. The only companion he allows in his life is his little dog Albert. Richard doesn’t understand why Tikron has targeted him and this starts to destroy his carefully constructed world. The first two thirds of the book is all about Tikron trying to woo and convince Richard that magic is real. Only after a tragic accident does Richard finally see that Tikron is for real. After that he seems to accept magic pretty easily. He comes to realize that love is the most powerful magic in the world.

I enjoyed this story for the most part. It is definitely a slow burn love story. I found myself actually liking the secondary character Ry more that Tikron but that may be because he was written more as the comic relief. Richard is definitely frustrating at times but he is a mathmetician. Once his walls finally start to come down he is a very amusing character. Tikron comes off a little shallow in the beginning but eventually once he shares his backstory he become a more relatable character. All in all this is a story about one man finally believing in the magic of love.

Magic meets reality and it doesn't go well in the beginning for Tikron and Richard.

Tikron has to find his soulmate and is running out of time. He doesn't believe it will ever happen for him until he meets Richard.

Richard is logical and doesn't believe in magic. It was funny to read how Tikron proves to him that it is.

I loved that Richard's life is so organized. His routines will make you think what a boring life he leads until Tikron comes into his life. When his orderly life is turned upside down by a man who believes in taking things one day a time, Richard opens up to a whole new world. SJD wrote Richard as such a stick in the mud so when he comes out of his shell, it was great to read.
Tikron knows that Richard is his true love so he has to open his heart and let him in as well.

Tikron best friend Ry is a total surprise in this story, I really loved him and how he helps his friend get his soul mate.

I got through this story quickly and enjoyed it.

It was ok. I can't say it was a bad book. It had some interesting moments but it felt a bit flat, with nothing much going on a d with a lot of questions that needed answer. Even with all that, I was enjoying the read until Richard's personality had such a big change that lost the initial charm I saw in him. I do think some readers would enjoy it, but to me, it was just ok.

I believe in magic. I can’t imagine not believing it when there are so many unexplained things in the world around us. ‘Calculated Magic’ brings into play my two favorite type of characters – one man, seeing the world through magic, fun and whimsy, and the second, a very logical, precise man who only believes in the rational – and has them smashing (not literally) into one another from the moment they meet. This book was pure fun right from the get-go.

Tikron and Richard are such different men that it was more than funny to watch their interactions. Not to make him sound arrogant, but Tikron is 349 years old and hasn’t had any trouble attracting and charming men during this time. He is baffled (and his best friend greatly amused) by Richard’s immediate refusals and lack of interest. Richard is, initially at least, annoyed at this large man who keeps popping up and interrupting Richard’s solitude. But, Richard can’t deny the attraction goes both ways. Of course, when all manner of strange things begin to happen, Richard is positive he’s losing his mind because there’s no such thing as magic!

This really was a fun, cute read. It's pretty much: 350 year old warlock walks into a bakery and is smitten with cute hyperational geek, but get shot down hard. How does he woo someone who doesn't believe in magic?

But there's one major flaw here: the curse. This would have been a better, and completely good, story without the curse.

The Magic of Love

The blurb for the book sounded really interesting, but it far exceeded my expectations.

Richard is logical, practical and loves routine. Tikron is impulsive, passionate and magical. It was a hoot and heartwarming to see how Tikron tried to convince Richard that magic is real. My favorite scene is when his friend helped him in the park when Richard took his dog for a walk.

When Richard finally, through logic and proof, believes in magic he throws himself into it which was awesome to see. He became the perfect soulmate for Tikron. You would think that the story would end there, but it doesn't.

There is a surprise guest who I never thought would make an appearance. I won't tell you who it is, but this person throws a wrench into the works, in a good way, and makes for a more exciting story.

There is one more twist but it does have a happy ending. It even has one of those endings where I didn't want the story to end. I sure hope the author comes out with a part 2 because I feel the story deserves it and I would love to read the continuation of their partnership.

I highly recommend this book. If you love an opposites attracts story that includes magic and passion and some comical scenes, then you will love this book.
