Zombie Road #3

Rage on the Rails

Rate this book
The people that tried to kill the world were fiendishly clever.
After decades of planning, the contagion was unleashed and overnight hundreds of millions died and came back as rampaging, undead monsters. The living that had been lucky enough to survive the first day of carnage, lucky enough to be in the right place and lucky enough that some of them had the skills they needed, soon found out there was much more to worry about than just zombies.
In the high desert on the outskirts of Reno, there is an old truck stop frequented by a mix of hard caliber truckers, day tourists, musicians and travelers. They have survived the chaotic first hours of contact with the undead and now must make their way across the country to a location they believe is safe. Zombies are only the beginning of their troubles as they try to cover the thousands of miles of open road with their hastily armored 18-wheelers. Gunny, a long haul trucker doing one of the few jobs available to him as a disgraced soldier, is unwillingly saddled with the job of getting these survivors to the safe zone. With a motley crew of truck drivers, college kids, veterans, a drug dealer and a rock star, they are racing the clock to make it before time runs out. The last text he had received from his wife before the cell towers went down told him she was trapped in a high-rise in downtown Atlanta and their son was in detention, stranded in the basement of the school he attended. Gunny just wanted to drop the hammer, steal some guns and blast his way in to rescue them but duty called. He had to get these people to safety first, then he could recruit the best of this crew to help him save his family. If they survived the journey.

I really enjoyed this series and look forward to sequels, if they happen. The truckers are great (everyday?) characters to spend time with and root for, and root I did. I like their love for their machines, their comradery and their topping each other in let's be tough game.

The only thing I didn't like so much is switching between several dislocated subgroups of characters, which I found unbalanced to degree (in terms of time/text allotment for each of them).

Nevertheless, this is really powerful first attempt of this author (if I understand correctly). I especially liked the Casey (did I spell correctly?) character, it's some really mature and impressive writing, everything related to this one.

And many more details, fighting the zombies in fire protective silvery space suit... just heart breakingly hilarious - if that can be a thing. I was really on the edge in that scene. Because I root for truckers.

I read all the rave reviews and all I could think was...They must have been reading a different book than I was.

Long rambling and idiotic in many places, much of what happens makes no sense and it turned into one big conspiracy theory.

As with the second book all the women were inane characters with either no spine, no intelligent or both.

The best was the female president who bowed to know one wanting to live under Sharia law.. like that works for women who want to be in power.

Didn't like it.

It seems as though David Simpson has another hit on his hands. I really enjoyed reading this book although I hate to see the end of Gunny. I also wanted to see Casey get his just rewards. I can't wait to read more of Jesse and his adventures. If you want a good series to read then this is it. There are three books in this series.

Ended too soon

Gunny is once again on the road, this time to search for his family. Lacy is safe and he has learned of the possible fate of his son, Jessie. Of course all is never what it seems as Jessie is on a mission to wipe the slate clean for what he believes is his fault when a group he saves is found and slaughtered by the Muslims. He has taken to the backroads helping people as much as he can, leading the zombies away then informing the people where they need to go, gaining a reputation as a Savior and Road Angel and somewhere along the way, he aquires a dog, yeah corny; A Boy and His Dog. If you are old enough you willl get the slight reference to the old Don Johnson movie although the title is about all it alludes too. (if you're a sci-fi fan check it out).
The would be president is trying to make her way to Lakota to cement her power and is willing to sacrifice all the marines escorting her to safety. Daniel, a lieutenant that is more than a little suspicious about her and her retinue of black clad guards, but without any real knowledge as to what is really happening in the outside world, he is holding back.
Casey has just established himself as the leader of a group of hardened criminals both men and women that he has freed from high security prisons and is determined to become a self appointed dictator, his sights set on taking down Lakota and making it his own. Gunny and most of all Sheriff Collins are in his sights as his sadistic miind begins to think of ways to make them pay. And a herd of Zombies, a hundred thousound or more strong, are on the way to Lakota, follwiing the train Gunny is using to not only pick up survivors but to make it back home to search for his wife and son, not knowing Lacy is already back at Lokota.
Yeah it is all happening fast and disappointing that it leaves some loopholes and many, many questions; the fate of General Carson, Sheriff Collins the continued existance of Lakota and its residents and even Casy and his band of thugs and the would be traiterous President. Mr. Simpson does however allude to further adventures of Jessie and Bob, his dog, in another upcoming series. So while it might have ended abruptly, there are still stories to be told and I for one am really, really looking forward to what happens next.
Hmmm maybe not so disappointed after all. well played Mr. Simpson, well played

This series just keeps getting better and better.

Our heroes have now reached the place where they are going to set up housekeeping (so to speak) and build a city (Lakota, OK) and rebuild the United States. When they get settled and some politics sorted out, Gunny and his crew take off to rescue his wife (Lacey) and son (Jessie). Unknown to Gunny though, his wife and son don't need rescuing. :)

Now you would think that our heroes would use their "souped-up" almost armored cars but nope, they've refurbished and zombie proofed a train! (See the cover of the book). While this book does focus on Gunny and his crew, it does seem as if Jessie is going to become the main hero of the series. I'm not sure how I feel about that. :( Again, Gunny's wife (Lacey) seems to be left out of the stories. I know how I feel about that but there's nothing I can do to change it. :(

In this book, we learn who sold the zombie making solution to the Jihidi's and (depending on your political persuasion you are going to love it or hate it). It's not hard to figure out who the real individual in real-time/life is! I'm not going to go into this part because it doesn't really matter who the modern-day counterpart is but it may p!ss some individuals off. And this isn't the only villain in the book because we find out that Collins enemy is still out to get her and wreak havoc on the newly built town/city/capital of the U.S.

With the emergence of Jessie as the "hero", these books might start to appeal to the young adults and some older adults (like me) may begin to lose interest in the series. With this development, I can see (for the first time) that this is the author's first attempt at writing a book or a series. Still, I bought the entire series so far, and I will finish them. Who knows, the author might surprise me.

Zombie Road III - An Ending

This is a trilogy that you almost forget that you stopped bashing towards the end of the last book. Then with a great inhale, an overwhelming sense of loss sets in. The characters had become so well known to you, like good but distant friends. You cheered for the good guys, felt hated for the evil ones, and thanked the his if your choosing for those that feel somewhere in between yet managed to eek out a decent act or two.

The descriptors utilized in the Book took you right into the thick of the action, fighting for life amongst the zombies set loose by extremists, both ones who believed it was their holy destiny and helped by those who only he'd a sick desire for power by any means. Don't they know plans like that usually never work out, and most always backfire in the must heinous way possible???

Anyways, I was weeping with relief in the Afterwards when Mr. Simpson announced another series to follow, chronicling the years after the fall of civilization as it had been.

This is a zom-poc genre gem. The author has an intense gift that he is thankfully sharing with the world - the ability to bring his characters to life in a very real, natural fashion. Thus ability is what sets books apart - some books are a good read, and then there are those that touch you, bring you back for several re-reads over time. Plus, you recommend them to anyone interested in any genre close to zombie, dystopian, horror, science fiction, etc. Yeah. Read all David Simpson's books.

Can't wait for more, and I live the idea of switching from focusing on Funny to his son, Jessie. No one can say Jessie hasn't paid enough of his soul during the fall to warrant being the prime character for awhile! :)

Thank you, David!!!!!!

BEST BOOK YET!

I don’t know why the author said he had to cringe at ANYTHING written in this book. Well, I guess we all feel that way about our own writing - often. But for the reader ... this was absolutely the best book yet!

Wildly engrossing.

I could go on and on about why. The phenomenal, rich character development which has built up to where we are now. To a point where there is so much investment in the positive outcome for each character, main and supporting. And wishing for a horrible death for those who are less than likable. This would be the main driver of series - the author’s craftsmanship in characterization. It’s truly above average! And, of course, the storyline is completely different than any other out there in the genre. Novel and refreshing. To use over used phrases because they are so fitting- keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the pages turning until dawn (it’s currently 4:45am, sleep, who needs sleep??).

The author claims the story is over .... but I believe there is currently a book 4 available?? I hope so! I hate to see the Gunny storyline peter-out. As much as I adore Jesse, and I will follow his solo story as well, Gunny is definitely the star of the show. Plus — the conclusion to the Casey story must end with Gunny. Otherwise I can’t see how it could be satisfying? Actually, then again, as long as Casey is dead, I don’t care if he slips in the shower, as long as we find out about it! This loose end definitely WILL keep me up at night.

I cannot wait to continue the adventure in book 4 ......

This is by far one of the worst books i’ve ever read in my life. And I read a lot of books. A lot of zombie books which can be really cheesy. I never read a book with so many shallow predictable stupid annoying characters. And racism. Inner dialogue of the main characters leaves a lot to be desired, I’m starting to wonder if Gunny is the only character with an IQ above 73.

There is no sense of you being there with them, there’s no fleshing out of the characters or any sort of character building, so when they die, you just don’t care. And what little background do you have of the characters so predictably stupid that you just have to roll your eyes and keep going. An example would be Casey the cannibal, a guy who failed in his mission to ruin everyone’s day the first time around so he just pretends to be some dangerous cannibal and attracts a group of hardened bad@sses to follow him on his quest for revenge.

At the end of the day, none of the characters had any sort of redeeming qualities except the main good guy, everyone else was shallow, predictable, and stereotypical, and worst of all usually kind of stupid in one way or another.

If you are bored, if you have nothing better to do, have low standards, low expectations, and just want to read a mindless violent predictable zombie book with plot holes, bad grammar, and zero twists, & looks to have been written by an 8th grader, this is the book for you.

Again, another wonderful chapter of truckers/veterans versus zombies. This series is a refreshing change in the tired old ZA, which definitely makes it worth reading. However, I have a few gripes about Mr. Simpson's writing style. The word "keening" is used hundreds of times and to the point it gets extremely annoying. A good thesaurus sitting next to the author would show words such as "wail" and "moan" and would have made for much better reading, rather than use the exact same word over and over throughout this book. Also, the usage of an apostrophe is completely misunderstood. As examples, eggs are not written as egg's, and a group of veterans are not written as a group of veteran's. It is all too common in Kindle books that authors do not often have a firm grasp on the English language, simply because they either do not have the skills themselves to thoroughly edit their work, or they won't pay to have it edited. A wonderfully edited book is so much more enjoyable to read; I wish Kindle authors understood that. A star removed for poor editing...

This is the last book in the series and what a book it is. Gunny, Griz and others from Lakota go out searching for more survivors to bring back using the train. They have been broadcasting, letting people know how to connect with them or to head to Lakota on their own if possible. Unfortunately the fake President, who was in cahoots with the Jihadis's right from the get go, also hear the broadcast and are heading that way to take it over.
Jessie, Gunny's son, is out on the roads trying to save people because of a horrific incident he feels was his fault. Can he find the redemption he searches for, will he be lost to the many hordes of zombies or to some waste of skin fellow survivors?
As the action revs up, you realize that one hell of a battle is coming. Who will win and at what cost?
I highly recommend this series if you love a nonstop, action packed tale with compelling characters that you will make you pray for their survival or hope they suffer an excruciating death.

Good first book(s)

I believe Mr. Simpson will continue to improve and am looking forward to reading more of his work. This series was very good; especially as a first offering. His characters were likable (or hatable; every tale needs a bad guy ) and, for the most part, relatable. He has the ability to draw you into the story and make you feel a connection with the characters. While I have no idea if some of the things that happened are possible; it doesn't matter, it's fiction! There was plenty of action, humor and just enough 'romance' to not change the dynamic of the story.

Pick up a copy of this series, you won't be disappointed. I certainly wasn't. The hallmark of a.good author is to leave you wanting more once you've finished a book. That is exactly what happened. We (constant reader) are in for a treat as we continue to enjoy the development of Simpson.

The best thing about this series is that the characters are just every day folks. They just ass to help each other and do what’s right. Yes there are a lot of former soldiers but that doesn’t make them any less of an every day person. This is one of my favorite zompoc series so far. Very interested in what the Dr’s are doing with their serums. The ruthlessness if the Muslim extremist is devastating. What will happen to all of the innocent Muslims who are in the states who did not go on the pilgrimage. Will any of them be spared. The will to survive for the main characters is inspiring. Happy to have a dog introduced as a new character too! Casey needs an ending that results in death. I knew that from the moment his character was introduced!
Eric Shelman does an amazing job narrating the series.

As of my reading this book is rated about 4.7 stars on Goodreads. While I read the whole book & didn’t hate it, I don’t think it’s a 5 star book. This installment lacked some of the “fun” of the first two books. The characters understandably got more serious but I missed the quirky fun. This was still very much not P.C. but the author did make an attempt to remedy that to some extent. Though I think if this book ever gets a larger audiences attention there will be people outraged upon reading it. Also, I still don’t think in a situation like this there would be 100s of 1000s of zombies outdoors. Sick people go to hospitals or stay in bed. Sure, maybe one zombie outdoors would bite whoever it sees making more but I don’t think it would lead to hordes. Anyway, I finished the series. People really into zombie fiction & not easily offended would enjoy it I think. Snowflakes stay away.

As a reader of the series it was well written and worth reading. The books are fast paced but easy to read. I know not everyone is into the undead but zombies aside it could be any apocalypse the writer takes you through the many struggles it would take to keep yourself and family safe! Give this series a try I am sure you wont be disappointed.

Not just another zombie book

This is the third book in the series. Each book has seen the characters develop and more join the story. This book is not filled with romance, faultless mcs, or unrealistic plots. We have big burly vets, truckers, and people just trying to survive. Then there are those lawless criminals that need to be put down. The author doesn't just skip over all the horror that is inflicted on the innocent. It's there and makes you root for the mcs even more. There are details that make you really believe it's a possibility. I can't wait to continue the story in book 4.

A-Mazing

Once again, thrice in total, I couldn’t put this book down!
I want more, I need more, I crave MORE from Gunny & his gang of good guys.
As a wife of a soldier myself I want to shake the .... outta Gunny for his “Oorah” ways but at the same time fawn over his patriotic heroism.
And Jessie. Jessie, Jessie, Jessie. The mama in me wants to spank his all knowing teenage tail and kiss his booboos away. The physical & emotional ones.
I’d give this series 10 stars if I could!

Zombies, guts and glory.

Bought all 3 of these books and I really enjoyed them all. I know there were some errors in the storyline and I frowned at some parts of the plot but overall I was a happy chappy. One thing this series does better than the majority of other books in this genre is flow, it flows seamlessly from events and characters without the feeling you have missed something. A great effort from the author and I am looking forward to even greater as he learns and gains experience. Thankyou.

Good read

Read all three books I enjoyed them. It's almost like the author followed a step by step instruction on how to write a zombie apocalypse story but he did a Damn good job of it. It was fun to read and had decent characterization. The Muslim hatred was a way to strong for my taste but he had to pick a bad guy so that was his choice. The obvious shots at the former Secretary of state were a little much also. Easy to like the main character and all his buddies. I would read this author again.

Life of a Trucker is the road, mix it with Zombies…Watch out!
Oh My God! Of course he has nothing to do with the Apocalypse, it has to be help from down under. If you want action this is the book. So much happened and the ending was a surprise too. Evil lurks in the heart of men, even when civilization is on the edge of extinction. Filled with new dangers, old enemies, guardian angels, and everything in between. On the road again…multiple Presidents, new menaces, and hopefully families will get back together. Don’t miss out, the Zombies are too fast and will run you down.

A Must read zom poc series

Mr Simpson you did not let me down. 3rd book better then the first and i was hooked by chapter 3.
Very good series for a zom poc book. Not your average "zombie vrs human" theres more to this story to keep you on the edge of each page. To have A.D.D and be able to read this book while the family watched t.v should say alot. Was a pleasure to read and was extremely greatful of this books ending.

Following Gunny and Jessie (and all the rest of the crew) through the zombie infested wasteland that America has become is an awesome adventure. With most of the population dead and trying to eat them, they persevere, they fight on, even in the face of ongoing terrorist attacks. The characters, whether good or bad, are fabulous and the story continues flawlessly throughout this series. I will highly recommend the Zombie Road books to anyone and everyone.

ETA. I thought this was a trilogy, but there is at this time a 4th in the series.
This was a fun trilogy but with this last book being the least enjoyable. I found the politcal overtones in this one somewhat overtook the fun trucker/ex soldier/hero fun of the first 2 books in the series. The zombie storyline falling into the background and I'm sorry to say that for me this last in series lost steam and coasted to a anticlimatic finish.

This Road Was No Dead End

But rather the end of a whole lot of dead! What an awesome story full of bigger than life heroes pulling off impossible feats of heroics all while driving diesel rigs, souped up muscle cars and TRAINS! Yup! If you enjoy non stop action and bad guys getting their butts kicked, thrown, shot, ate by zombies and/or blown to smithereens then you'll love Zombie Road series!

A solid zombie tale

A damn good read. The tough guys are super tough and the bad guys are super bad, and certain liberties are taken with world politics, but that's really no bad thing. This book never for one second pretends to be anything but an action movie in book form and that's no bad thing.

If you like action, give it a try. If you like zombie stuff, give it a try. If you like action and zombies, them you're in for a treat.

Could be worse

There can be no mistake that there's a lot anti-Muslim sentiments in this book series. I don't subscribe that all Muslims are bad people, no different than the religious right in the US. Can't tell from the book if Gunny and family are regular church going people, but that doesn't matter because some people are evil to their souls even in a zombie apocalypse.
I like a good zombie book, but have four stars because how the book ended.

Can't say how much I enjoyed this book!!! Many different groups are threatening their new home and Gunny and the gang are not standing for it. They will stop at nothing to keep their new home safe. In all of this Gunny is still trying to find his family, but with everything going on they keep get put on the back burner. In the end they end up making it o him.
Go ahead and take the plunge this is great series.

The End?

OMG!! I want more!! This was the most awe inspiring of the 3 books. Each got better and more exciting to read. I, for one, would love to read more about Gunny, Lacy, Griz, Cobb and the rest of the original truckers. Having Jessie be the main character in the round of books is great, but those loose ends really need to be closed.

Awesome series

David A Simpson, created a cast of characters that made you cheer for them, be frightened by for them and make you mad at them for the chances they took. Lakota is where I'd want to live in an apocalyptic world. Awesome book and series, now in to the Anthology of Zombie Road and am looking forward to Jessies story.
