That's Not My Reflection

Rate this book
I’ve always been able to see the shapes and feel the energy of the things that go bump in the night. So as excited as I am when my grandma gives me the antique mirror from her vanity that I’ve always admired, I’m not sure I want the ghost that comes in it. That is until Fiona becomes the best friend I’ve ever had.

When Ward Heldman, the biggest jerk in school, walks by one day and visibly reacts to Fiona’s face, I know he sees her. I’m the only person I know who sees beyond the grave, and as much as I’d like to talk to Ward about it, I’m scared he’ll be able to tell I have a crush on him and beat me up.

My life changes the day Ward approaches me. Fiona senses something trying to attach to him and says we must help him. While she’s busy trying to make me get close to him, I resist. It’s not the evil energy I feel surrounding Ward that scares me, it’s the way he’s starting to look at me.

Hmmmmm, I don't quite know how to feel about this. The story was definitely interesting, but it just didn't quite grab me the way I wanted it to. The romance and the development of the relationship between Lonnie and Ward just didn't work for me. They encounter this problem together, Ward drives Lonnie to school the next day and because both of them were crushing on each other BOOM, they're boyfriends now. I felt like these two just needed to be together in the story, so they ended up together. Also, I didn't like the fact that everyone kept calling Ward the "school bully" and yet we never see anything that he actually did. They just told us he was a bully at the beginning of the story and once Lonnie and him start dealing with their problem he's pretty much the sweetest human being.
The ending of this felt really all over the place for me, there were a lot of characters being plot-dumped that I had a hard time keeping apart and the whole thing felt a bit too convenient to me. There was a really long scene full of exposition being dumped on the reader and then they go and solve Ward's problem. It just all felt a bit too perfect to me, everyone is perfectly fine, no one got hurt and Anyway, I'm not saying there can't be happy endings, I'm just saying in a story that pretends to be high stakes and deals with death, the afterlife and ghosts, I expected the ending to be a bit more dramatic.
That being said, I did like the main characters and gosh, I need to know more about Ray and his tree ghost boyfriend!! I feel like there's a pretty tragic story behind them.

An absolute delight!

I have not had the best luck with YA books lately and was hesitant to try this one. However I have been on a Halloween theme of spooks and paranormal reads and this was highly recommended. I'm very glad I gave it the chance because it was a delightful read!

This book starts off with a simple focus and actually expands its character focus and discovery as the book goes on. Starting following Lonnie and Ward independently as they each deal with (very different) ghosts in their lives, it gives a good background on the two characters. As they intersect over the whole ghost thing it opens up more discoveries about the two characters as well as bringing in more characters who are important to them and affected by the situation. By the end the story has had a few little twists and it is quite the paranormal delight! It was a lovely read of continued discovery for the two lead characters.

The sweet innocent romance between the two leads was very refreshing. At seventeen these two boys are old enough to be thinking romance and more, but young enough to be hesitant about going to far. It leads to this sweet and wholesome romance, where it was just as important to them to listen and be there for each other to prove they could be a good match as it was to kiss and be physical. Neither are ready to go all the way so the heat is low with some make out sessions but nothing further. It was all about building the relationship and that was a very rewarding read!

With the reveal of some twists about the town and the characters, there is a chance for plenty more stories from this world. I look forward to seeing where those stories go!

Who you going to call?

I loved this story! It was fun, spooky, and full of friendship, quirky but lovable characters, and hints of love. Wade is adorably grumpy but very protective and Lonnie (along with his new bestie) cracked me up. They’re just what Wade needs in his life. Together with their amazing friends and family, Lonnie and Wade are read you won’t want to miss out on. Ghosts for the win!

First, even if you're not "YA", read this book. It catches your attention and does not let go. Walt, Lonnie, and all the others are incredibly well-thought out characters that you almost expect them to show up in your house. The story is incredibly rich and will draw you in. I am looking forward to the other books in the series and cannot wait to see what happens next.

Cute

It's more of a ghostly teenage romance but I rather enjoyed it. It's a sweet story and look forward to reading about how this young men blossom.

Most excellent ghost story!

I love all the characters in this book. Ms. Marie always gives her characters the personalities we can all relate too.
