All three of Rob Eager's author guides have had a lot of helpful tips and step-by-step advice. His "book hook" tips helped me revamp my descriptions and narrow the focus of my synopses. I haven't had time to apply all of his instructions, but I'm looking forward to taking one step at a time and hopefully writing a full review once I know the results.
I love Rob Eagar's books for two reasons: first, he's immersed in the publishing business, working to sell his own books as well as help other authors hit national bestseller lists every day. And second, he's always practical and down-to-earth. Most of what he recommends will require work, yes, but he encourages you to take things one step at a time and consistently move forward. What he recommends is a TON of work, but it's doable one step, one book at a time. The entire Author's Guide series is perfect for helping new authors get started the right way and experienced authors to tweak what they are already doing.
This particular book is excellent for breaking down the pieces of book descriptions (online and on back covers) that help sell books. He gives excellent examples from both fiction and nonfiction, listing out why they work and how you can copy their techniques. He also walks you through asking for endorsements, including where to find them, and offers a template for asking another to read and review your book.
I was introduced to Rob's books by a friend and first started with a free book to see whether I could understand his writing. Often books contain too much jargon that goes way over my head but this was not the case with Rob. With his easy-to-understand style and clear examples, I absolutely loved his first book and more so this one. My brain is going haywire with ideas and before finishing the book, I got stuck into book hooks, value statements and back copy for my books. I am that author who knows absolutely nothing about marketing but now a whole new world has opened up to me. I cannot wait for this next leg of my journey. Thank you Rob. The wisdom you have added to my writing world is invaluable.
This book is filled with all the wisdom and instruction an author needs to write text that markets your book properly and upgrades its appeal on Amazon. My copy is stuffed with small pieces of paper used to brainstorm ideas as Rob Eagar challenged me to create a hook, write the book's description, and generate a value sentence. All of which were intended to "entertain, inspire, or educate the reader."
My copy is highlighted, stuffed with notes, and heavily dog-eared. It appears that my copy has gone through a battle. In fact, it has, and the results of that skirmish will be accoladed by increased book sales.
If you need to write compelling text to market your book, be it a hook, a title, blurb or description, Rob Eagar provides an excellent resource filled with exercises for writing compelling book marketing material.
For me, the most valuable chapters were his series on value statements. The information wasn't new, but Rob's approach to their impact on reader buying decisions, plus his concrete examples for building effective vale statements really resonated with me.
I also appreciate his reminder of why I write.
"Logic makes people think, but emotion makes them act."
In a world of constant ping pong advise on marketing for authors, this book was the most helpful. Most advise says figure out your target audience. Look outward. This book made me look inward again to rediscover why I wrote what I did and how to pull from that in order to reach the target audience, super helpful!
Useful marketing guide. Writing fiction is entirely different than writing good marketing text. This book offers guidance for writers like me who feel at a loss in knowing how to market their books. Very informative.
There’s a lot that I’m familiar with already, but there’s suggestions that are useful that will be good to focus on moving forward. I’m glad that I decided to read this series from Rob Eagar.
Rob Eagar gave me just what I needed, essential information clearly expressed. He went step by step through the complex and confusing process of selling my book.
