Slogged through this thicc book in the hopes of outwitting the Rumplestiltskin-esque questions that the GRE posits. Shylock seems a reasonable gentleman next to the writers of the logic-based reading comprehension questions.
My practice test scores are about where I want them to be, thanks to this book unweaving my curated humanities education and reweaving it in the fabric of reprehensible writing, pettifogging logic, and pedantic drivel (CAN'T YOU SEE I'M STUDYING VOCABULARY?!). Honestly, I just hate the GRE and all that it stands for, but this is the go-to resource for practicing anything and everything you'll encounter on the exam. (Hint: when you register for the actual exam, you can get 2 free practice tests with Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning scored, and tools to guess your percentiles and Analytical Writing score.)
It also really does weigh 5 lbs. A slight weight compared to the burden of taking the GRE.
I read seven chapters of this book for the "Quantitative Reasoning" section of my GRE. I think this the best book available for practicing math for the GRE with classified chapters about the material of the test such as arithmetic, algebra, data interpretation, etc. Also, there are some practice test chapters similar to the GRE which measures your ability in all of the chapters with a limited number of questions.
Great math review, but not for verbal practice. The verbal questions are nothing like what's on the GRE as far as difficulty is concerned and how Manhattan Prep wrote the questions. They are not in the exact style of GRE Verbal Reasoning. The math, however, is great. Oh, and you can actually get this book for free. Do a Google search for Library Genesis. You will find this book on there as well as a host of other GRE practice guides, INCLUDING the ETS Official Guide, Verbal Practice, and Quantitative Practice. Can't beat that! You can all thank me for the recommendation in the comments.
The reading comprehension portions are very low quality. There are too many passages/questions that contain vague language. When the test taker is asked to interpret vague language, getting the correct answer becomes like rolling the dice since, when there are multiple ways to interpret vague language, you just have to pick one of the possible interpretations and hope for the best. The reading comprehension portions need to be edited so as to remove the portions that contain vague language.
If you are looking to buy this book to practice reading comprehension, I DO NOT recommend buying this book.
Great set of practice problems (and obviously quite thorough!). I would have liked an instructional section or two to help sum up what equations to remember or strategies to employ. All that is found in the answer sections, but a summary of highlights would have been helpful for the final dasys of test prep.
This book is the best source to learn every tips and tricks that can be found on GRE exam especially on quantitative section. Solve all the mathematical problems, they are really challenging.
This is a wonderful book. My goal when buying this book was to excel at Math questions. The book does not teach you anything, just helps you to measure your progress and test yourself. So, I think it is necessary to compliment it with some other resources. I did buy some online course to teach me the concepts or help me review them. Then, started go through the book and practice Math questions. With help of this book, I was able to get 170 from Quantitative which I thought impossible when starting to prepare. So, I owe it to the book.
Granted the book has some chapters for Writing and the Verbal sections, but honestly I did not go through them good enough to develop an opinion. The majority of the book is the Math questions anyways ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Phenomenal value; hundreds of exercises with great explanations for the price of a couple cups of coffee. A must if you want >160 on Quant, unless you're already very much up to par on that front. The verbal questions are not nearly as true to those that appear on the test, so it's better to use the ETS verbal practice questions book for that. Do yourself a favour and get the Kindle version of the 5lb book, even if you don't have one — you'll want to view it on your laptop anyway.
A must-have for the serious student wanting a good GRE score. However, you will likely want to pick up a separate book to cover the Advanced math sections. But for general math and the verbal section this book is a life saver. I cannot recommend it highly enough, and have talked several friends into buying it.
This book is actually five pounds. No, really. It is very heavy. But--but but but but but--all kidding aside, it is crammed full of GRE math questions, and since this particular (very heavy) book helped me get a passing grade on the GRE math test, I give it five stars.
That is THE BOOK for GRE preparation. Very good explanations for correct/incorrect answers for the verbal part, very good math part coverage. This one book is enough to prepare for the exam properly.
