Though a man (plant?) of peace, Vash the Stampede may be the deadliest gunslinger in the galaxy. But his brother, Knives, may be the deadliest creature in existence. Orchestrating a campaign of terror and destruction, Knives and his plant army are out to turn planet Gunsmoke into just that, and Knives may soon grow too powerful to be stopped - though Vash may die trying! Yasuhiro Nightow's Trigun is an international phenomenon, and Trigun Maximum Omnibus Volume 3 packs over 600 story pages of Nightow's masterpiece!
Volume 8 was a HUGE departure from the anime, like a volume 3 Akira twist. Very cool. But volume 9 was like 90% a shootout showdown with no dialogue and a lot of brooding expressions and sound effects. No so bad in and of itself, except that it interrupted the profound and bleak developments that had just occurred, and ultimately felt tonally out of place considering. Wrapping up a supporting character’s arc right after a world-altering catastrophe that seems to have his specific purpose unaffected is just... weird.
In this third omnibus edition of Trigun Maximum it opens with some backstory on Vash and his brother Knives. We see more of where they originated as well as what happened to some of the first ships to come to the planet.
Vash has a compassionate view of humans and pities them for the desperate situation they have been forced into. Knives on the other hand has only hatred and contempt for humans and how they have sought to use the other Plants as a resource.
Knives blazes a trail of destruction across the planet, freeing and absorbing other Plants and leaving cities desolated in his wake. He must be stopped before more human ships arrive or they too could fall prey to his course of destruction.
This makes for a powerful and insightful story arc as we see the tension and the relationship between the two brothers.
In addition we get some background on Wolfwood and a rather long story focus on him fighting his past as well.
This was a great omnibus and a wonderful addition to the series.
