Ron I’m a decorated Marine general who doesn’t have time for relationships. I’ve tried –they just don’t work out—and I’ve never lost sleep over it. Then I meet her. Brenna is easily the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on. The first time she blushes under my stare, it’s game over. She’s going to need to learn that I’m in charge and trust that I always mean what I say, because I’m not letting her go.
Brenna When Ron offers me a drink at the Sterling’s wedding reception, I have no idea that he’s a military star on the rise; I just know he’s the walking definition of masculine—that translates in the bedroom (and couches, counters, tables…) as the best sex I’ve ever had. The more time we spend together, the more I’m convinced he’s hiding something – or someone—and I’m not going down that road again. He can say anything he wants, but actions speak louder than words.
USA Today and Amazon best-selling author, Tess Summers is a former business woman and teacher who always loved writing but never seemed to have time to sit down and write a short story, let alone a novel. Now battling MS, her life changed dramatically, and she has finally slowed down enough to start writing all the stories she'd been wanting to tell, including the fun and sexy ones! Married over twenty-five years with three grown children, Tess is a former dog foster mom who ended up failing and adopting them instead. She and her husband (and their six dogs) split their time between the desert of Arizona and the lakes of Michigan, so she's always in a climate that's not too hot and not too cold, but just right!
DNF. I shouldn’t have even opened it. This is a hot mess. What are all these ‘missions’ this general keeps going on? Where is the research into the job scope of a US marine general? Beta readers with military knowledge, maybe? Anything? Hello?
I am between 3 and 4 stars for this book and finally round it up to 4 stars. If only every party has a Ron in it,I will be more happy to attend any party if at the end I can get Ron.
It is a romance between older couple. I always love a read a story about more mature characters. The love story is hot and sizzle. There is so much sex in it that makes me blush.
Miss Summers done a good job navigating the miss communication and miss understanding between Ron and Brenna. It is done so its not too cheesy and too immature. And through it all the chemistry between the characters grow. More fondly.
The General's Desire By Tess Summers is the story of Ron and Brenna. Ron and Brenna are an older couple who happened to me and hit it off. Brianna was married before and while going through the divorce her husband died, leaving her a widower. Brenna‘S first husband cheated on her and left her with doubts about a man staying faithful . Ron is a military man who single never married and always seem to be married to his military career. When he meets Brenna he was quickly attracted to her and wondered if maybe he was wrong.. maybe was military wasn’t everything. This was an older couple romance that I really enjoyed. Ihope to read more by this author.
Let's take the sex first. This is a 370+ pages (on Phone-Kindle) book that must have around 300 pages of sex describing maybe a dozen or so encounters. And not a single of those encounters stick to mind - you could swap any two of them and not know the difference. All the 'dirty' (or 'hot') words and phrases are used, all the meticulous description is there, and yet, by the time I hit the third such, I simply skipped ahead with a - yeah, yeah, they have some great sex but since I read the same 30 pages ago, nothing new to read.
What about the rest of the book? The setting is so promising - a mature couple (44 and 45), highly successful careers (a blockbuster hollywood scriptwriter, a major general in some armed force unit that's never named; okay, this all eye-roll-worthy but I'm willing to let it slide for the oh-so-romantic feel these characters are supposed to evoke), seemingly no hangups about love or sex. But what exactly do they do when they are not having sex? They are talking about having sex, or about the sex they had just a page ago. Another boring side of this book.
How about the 'conflict' that's important to make a book interesting? Let's see, we have dumped-date turned assaulter (rescued by the hero, but the incident is never described) which was sorta realistic; then we have our MCs, mature to say so, but acting more like teenagers in their angsty drama and the 'does he/doesn't he' (love me/ cheat on me / etc) that is soooo tedious. That's it. No conflict worth the words to describe it.
Then there's the lack of research - a 'General' has to go on 'missions' on the drop of a hat, and can't tell her what/where/when of it. Oh pleeeaasse. At the very least he could tell her what his job entails in an overview arc? Noooo! Because then even the paper-thin conflict would not stand. So the reader is left seething on such characters existing, even 'successful' in their lives!
The secondary characters might have made the book more interesting, but they flit thru the pages with no role to play other than talk with/about the MCs. What a waste.
No secret is made by Ms. Summers of the sister's romance to be a follow up book, but anticipating another similar repetitive bore, I am out.
This is the first book I've read by Tess Summers but it will definately not be the last. She did a wonderful job with the character and relationship development between Brenna and Ron. I liked that they were older more mature characters. As a reader I felt like I really got to know the main characters. The plot line had lots of twists and turns which kept me turning the pages till well into the night. And sexy, talk about serious hotness. This book couple was on fire! I also think she did a good job with the secondary characters and I look forward to their stories. When I received this book I did not realize that this is the 2nd book in the San Diego Social Scene series but it works well as a stand alone. That being said I look forward to going back and reading book 1, Operation Sex Kitten.
I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
Trust and communication. These exist within the core of every relationship along with love and respect. But they can be the most hardest to give and do.
Falling in lust is easy, I think. I see, I like, I want. Lust is superficial when emotions are pushed aside. It's physical need fulfilling physical need. It really isn't much more than that. Once emotions get involved though, the tune of the entire relationship changes. Trust is tentatively given, doled out in pinches as it is earned. Communication opens up and aspects of private lives are shared. Those first few steps into the hallway of unknowns are hesitant but not for long. It isn't considered tromping around like a drunk bull when the invitation to get to know one another better has been extended.
But it's not an invitation that should be taken lightly.
Brenna's been there. She's done that. She watched from the sidelines as her late husband chased one skirt after another. Though she tried to be the friend, the lover, the wife he needed, even going as far as having breast augmentation done, it wasn't enough to keep her husband's eye from wandering. Meeting Ron was, honestly, a fresh of breath air. He was up front and honest. He worshiped every part of her body, made her feel like the goddess her husband didn't see her as. He's a military career man through and through, and up for the promotion he's worked so hard for.
Their relationship is new ground for them both. Ron spells it out for Brenna what being with him means--long periods of time alone, leaving at the drop of a hat, unable to discuss what he actually does--and she's willing to try. Not because sex is amazing with him but because she truly likes him and wants to see where this goes.
But a part of Brenna is broken. The part of her that would have, years ago, been willing to trust a man's word at face value was torn down bit by bit by her late husband's infidelity. There's a lot of self-doubt and doubt in general, a lot of distrust toward Ron that slowly creeps into their relationship. Lack of communication, and miscommunication too, played a huge part in their arguments and separations. More than once I wanted to shake them both and make them realize that not talking about whatever was on their minds wasn't helping them in that moment.
Like I said, this was all new ground for them though. But everything--the errors and lapses of judgement, lies (or lying by omission, if you prefer that term), exclusion of each other, doubts, etc.--wasn't enough to keep them apart. Somewhere along the way, the lust Ron and Brenna shared evolved into love that refused to fade despite the ups and downs they experienced.
I loved that this was an older couple. These are new adults testing their wings out in the world. These are seasoned adults who've experienced much but still have much to experience. Ron and Brenna's story is long (settle in if you choose to pick this one up) and I enjoyed reading it. It isn't dark or angst filled. It's fairly simple and straightforward: strangers to lovers. It isn't the sex that kept me reading, and Ms. Summers does make sure this couple experiences endless amounts of pleasure, but the push and pull, the give and take, the newness of what they shared, the discovery of a love like neither had known before.
I didn’t realise when I started reading this that it was the second book in the San Diego Social Scene, however it can easily be read as a standalone.
Brenna is a mother of one, widowed three years back but she had been in the process of divorcing her cheating ex before he died. She is therefore cautious in her new endeavour in the dating game. When she meets Ron at a New Year’s Eve wedding party, she is surprised at how much they hit it off.
Ron is a marine general. He has never been one for relationships as he is married to his career and on his way to the top. He never envisaged meeting anyone like Brenna but once they met it was like it was meant to be. Fate.
This was one hot and raunchy romance between this older couple (both are in their early forties). The writing was detailed and mature which I found engrossing. The charisma of Ron to the flirtations of Brenna was undoubtedly the catalyst for the hot intense passionate romance that this read was. The chemistry between Ron and Brenna was off the charts.
I highly recommend this book especially if you love your romances to be that little bit more mature and intense. Four stars.
* ARC kindly provided by the author to Foxylutely in exchange for an honest review
So much miscommunication between these people. I liked several parts of the book but neither one of them were good communicators. Something that bothered me about Brenna was her getting upset with him leaving for work. That's like dating a cop but getting mad he gets called out to an accident. She knew. It's not like they dated then he joined. I know women can be persistent but Ron needed to shut that shit down with Sarah by buying a peephole to avoid opening the door. He caused that headache himself. I'd have jumped to those conclusions as well. Plus he should have mentioned Brenna to his parents then they wouldn't have included Sarah. Brenna should not have lied about Kyle. The parts where they were communicating were great.

This book gets an extra star for at least attempting to write a romance with "older" characters, but it was done poorly. Instead of a mature hero and heroine, we get the antics of horny teenagers--lots of sex, with angst, pouting, and immature, awkward conversations in between. There were too many holes in the plot--like how the bond trader knew which room she was in, and why a "general" had to go on so many short, secret missions. I wish the author had devoted more time to character and plot development, and less to writing sex scenes, this story had a lot of potential but fell completely flat.
I rec'd a copy of this book for an honest review. Tess is a new-to-me author, and I loved this book! I liked that Brenna and Ron were in their 40s...I need more sexy books like this with 40+ characters! The story is told from Ron & Brenna's point of view, which I appreciate.
Sexy chemistry and delicious sex scenes between the two characters. I also appreciate Ron asking if he was going too fast in the beginning, when they went to the hotel room. You don't see that often in books.
Vivid characters and a plot that moved along nicely. Would read more from this author.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my unbiased review. This was the first time I have read a Tess Summers's book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The general's desire is a wonderful story of second chances and new beginnings. Sometimes the first one isn't our true love and doesn't understand our worth or our hearts desire, then just when you wonder if anyone will see beneath the surface your very own "superman" comes along. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy, as Brenna discovers, when we fall back on learnt behaviours ingrained in us to protect ourselves. Obstacles are constantly placed in Brenna and Ron's path to love and happiness, most of their own making. Tess's characters are vivid and complex and her story telling abilities sophisticated and will leave you wanting more. I loved Brenna and Ron's story of second chance love and Brenna's triumph over her fears from her past experiences.
Sizzling sex interrupted by trust issues and lies keep Brenna and Ron from keeping it together. I love that Brenna is 44, and Ron is 45. Mature adult romance with her 20 y/o daughter and him being a Marine and a general add to the storyline.
Both are quite well off financially. She is not a gold-digger, but a successful screenwriter whose cheating husband died before the divorce finalized. He was never married.
If you enjoy erotic romance with detailed sex scenes and romantic touches, this could be written for you. Ron is dominant, but no bdsm. And Brenna is quite the willing participant.
Brenna's drunken tantrum was not my favorite scene, but there was plenty of fun banter between Ron and her. There is even a cool epilogue.
There are secondary characters of Cassie, her sister (in her 30s), Luke (Cassie seems to be interested in him), amd Danielle, her daughter, plays a pivotal role in the story.
This is a new to me author, and I am curious to read the next in this series... I am hoping that it is Cassie's sexy romance.
Note: I received an advance reader copy, and I bought a copy on Smashwords (pre-order sale).
This is the first time I have read a Tess Summer's book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Tess had me from the beginning. Once I started this book I couldn't put it down.
The character development, dialogue everything worked. Brenna, Ron and the secondary characters were believable. LOL....and sometimes just like in real life irritating :)
I ESPECIALLY loved that this book had older/ more mature characters. I've given up on younger characters. Sorry, I just can't relate anymore. What I am interested in and grateful for are books that remind us that desire, sex, love and new possibilities aren't just for people in their 20s and 30s. There is life beyond 40. Heck there is plenty of life even beyond that!
I received in arc of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.
This was the first I’ve read of Tess Summer and from what I read I’ll be jumping into more ! This book was fantastic!! Bren and Rons love story is a really good story. The way Tess goes into details about everything never leaves any questions and also just makes you want more. There was romance, family, fighting and of course sex. Which was so hot ! Bren isn’t looking to find the one ( isn’t that how it always happens lol) and in comes Ron. Ron is a super hot Marine who knows exactly what he wants. They are perfect together. Cassie was also fantastic and I can’t wait to see what’s next for her !
I loved it all so much. I highly recommend this book.
The General's Desire was a beautiful and steamy second chance romance. The more I read the better it got. This was my first Tess Summers book and I thoroughly enjoyed the plot, writing style, characters and steamy bits.
This was the story of Bren, a widowed screenwriter, and Ron, a General with the Marines. They meet of New Year's Eve and fall instantly for each other but after just arriving in Bren's hotel room his phone rings calling him back to duty, a ring tone Bren learns to have the worst timing. Their relationship has many challenges resulting in ups and downs. They need to learn to communicate if their relationship is going to survive his career.
Reviewed for Amo's Book Corner.
I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
An almost divorcee/widow and a sexy but closed off military man hit it off damn near immediately and it seems perfect..the “closes off” part of the military man is what causes issues here.
I did find some of the sex scenes overly descriptive and i found them a little overkill. The settings were certainly sexy enough - just maybe less details about the act itself and more bout how the characters were feeling about it? Not sure. Honestly, I know how hard it is to write at all so those are just my two cents.
They say things happen when you least expect them and that is what happens for Brenna and Ron. Her heart is hurting/her writing is stalled; his work is challenging/lasting relationships are impossible and yet...they meet, they connect, they fall in love. This sexy and moving story shows us without a doubt, we all need that one special person to enter our lives, challenge us and love us unconditionally.
First time reading Tess Summer books but this was a great one to start it's about second chance romance. Brenna is recently widowed screenplay writer and doesn't think she find another Mr right. She gets stood up by Raymond and doesn't know why until she learns the truth.
Ron is in the marine corps and has been serving his country for years and hasn't had time to find Mrs Right.
Brenna and Ron have both been invited to a new year's eve party and they both can't take their eyes of each other and flirting. They make a great couple but can they overcome all obstacles. Have they found the right match with each other.
The characters are well written. Highly recommend this book and author.
This was an amazing love story. Brenna met Ron at a wedding for her realtor. Brenna is a strong, independent woman. Ron is a General in the Marines and is an alpha to the max. These two go extremely well together and have amazing chemistry. They went through quite a bit to stay together. This author made this story very believable and it was extremely well written.
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review. This story is heavy on the sex scenes, the story aside from the sex scenes is an emotional one. I enjoyed the pace of the story and the emotion between the two characters and felt they were well developed. I also enjoyed the supporting characters in this book. It's pretty rare to have a story written about two 40 somethings that is a good story and also, very romantic. Neither one of these characters had found true love in their lives until they met in their early 40s. All in all an enjoyable read.
The General's Desire was my first ever ARC. This was also my first read by Tess Summers but will not be the last. Wonderfully written with major sexiness. I read it in one day. My husband was afraid I was going to electrocute the kids as I gave them a bath because I just could not put the kindle down! I am a sucker for anything Military to start with but this was excellent. It's a must read!
I really enjoyed The General's Desire it would be my first story read by the author and I'll definitely be reading book one in the San Diego social scene series plus I'm hoping the next one will be about the heroines sister and who her man will be . Ok there were only two things that dropped this down to a four star for me one would be the many misunderstandings between the couple and the writing style nothing against the authors writing style I just get a bit confused but over all this was a good read that I'll highly recommend . The chemistry between Ron and Brenna is instant the attraction is palpable with sex scenes that are oh so steamy , the way they talk to one another by respecting each other , both successful in their jobs , older / mature , and not afraid to show how they feel , but the only thing that really frustrated me was the fact that they both were quick to judge in misunderstandings . Ron is a great hero from first sight he was hooked to the heroine , very protective alpha , was so jealous of all the things Bren got to do with his HOT BODY . Brenna was a good heroine very talented I did understand some of the reasoning for her jump to conclusions given from past experiences from her ex husband . Can't wait to read more by Tess Summers she shows such amazing talent in bringing out emotions from my kindle , The General's Desire is a must read . copy provided for honest review **************************************** hero=9 heroine=8 secondary characters=9 Chemistry=10 steam=10 romance=10 humor=4 darkness level=3 action=4 mystery=4 enjoyment=8 angst=5 story line=9 Story ending=9 character development= pacing= Triggers= misunderstandings cover=10 stars=4 author=8 would I recommend this book=yes would I re read this book=yes would I read future books by this author=yes
God! I fell in love immediately with Brenna and Ron! I laughed, I cried, it was just perfect! Very believable love story with some exciting miscommunication scenario’s that really were rewarding as they were resolved! What a great series! Can’t wait to read the rest!
General Hotstuff What a fun and sexy book this was! It’s refreshing for me to read about a couple in their forties, attacking life with passion. General Ron Thompson is a career marine, pursuing a promotion and traveling at the whim of the powers that be more often than not. Brenna was a successful screenwriter before her marriage to a baseball player extinguished her creative fire. A strong but flawed couple. I loved the way this couple finally overcame the obstacles of his career and her insecurities to create a strong bond. When the going got tough, they were always there for each other. I am looking forward to hearing more about Brenna’s sister Cassie in the next book!
I was given an advanced copy of this for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book. The characters were believable and needed each other. There were some really HOT scenes as well as scenes where you could feel them falling for each other. Brenna and Ron were a great couple and I have already recommended this book to my book group and I will continue to follow this author.
General's Desire had me at "Maybe she should just hand him her panties and room key now." Brenna and Ron's relationship is a struggle of trust, love, and willingness to take a chance. Oh, and the sex scenes are steamy! I look forward to Cassie's story. I received an Advanced Reader's Copy for an honest review of Tess Summers' sophomoric effort.
This was the first book I read from Tess. It certainly didn't disappoint. Ron and Brenna were two older people, that had already gone through what life had thrown at them. No attachments, no mess, no strings. Yet, they were drawn to each other. This relationship felt real, no bullshit. It was refreshing. It's nice to read about the Gen X'ers. I can't wait to see what comes next from Tess!
I received an ARC of this book and just loved it! The characters, Ron and Brenna, were very relatable. I loved that they were more my own age. Once I started the book, I could not put it down.
