Divorced single mother Jenny MacPartland works in an art gallery in New York City and is swept off her feet by handsome artist Erich Krueger. Within a month they are married and Jenny and her two young daughters move to Erich’s Minnesota farm/mansion. Once there, there are lots of strange happenings, Jenny begins to question how much she really knows her husband, and she also begins to doubt her own sanity. This was such a good and suspenseful story. Filled with suspicious characters and a creepy atmosphere this story kept me entertained throughout.

Written by "The Queen of Suspense", I was expecting something to scare my socks off! I could see the WHO, just didn't know the WHY. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I will try other books by this author. Too bad this one didn't really cut it for me.

This was the first book of Mary Higgins Clark that I read and it was so good that I'd kept reading her books. I'm a picky person when it comes to what I read mostly, but after I finished this book I wanted to read more books by this author. I really enjoyed this book to the fullest, and found it hard to put down at all.

A Cry in the Night is about Jenny MacPartland, a single mother of 2 little girls, meets Erich Krueger, the man of her dreams. The two hit it off, and they marry quickly in spite of Jenny's friends' warnings and first impressions of Eric. So suddenly, Jenny and the girls, along with Erich, moved to Minnesota to live in Eric's beautiful mansion. But once there, Jenny discovers what a real eye-opener marriage can be. Erich begins acting strangely, and speaks of his late mother Caroline whom he is unnaturally obsessed with it seems. Jenny holds an uncanny resemblance to Caroline, and Erich grows more and more possessive of her. He never wants her out of sight, yet, he refuses to sleep in the same bed most of the time. He's busy. In the cabin. What lies behind the walls of the cabin are deadly, horrible secrets. You have to read this to find out!

Clark writes mostly suspense that really only get seriously frightening at the end. Definitely a terrifying and thrilling story!

I read this book years ago and remember it being a thrilling, suspenseful story. When I picked it up to read it again I couldn’t recall the details of it – only that it was a keeper. I’m happy to say it remains one after a second reading. I didn’t expect it to be quite as good the second time. Sometimes books just don’t hold up. But this one still managed to give a good ride despite some very minor flaws.

In this wonderfully creepy book the main character, Jenny, is a struggling mother of two young girls. She meets Erich, a man who seems to be her ultimate Prince Charming. After this rich, handsome, and sensitive fellow whisks her off her feet to live in his mansion she discovers he’s far from the man she expected. Her new husband is manipulative, abusive and possibly something even worse. Jenny’s feelings of being stalked, paired with her dawning realization that her children are in danger, comes across with visceral impact. It made me feel positively uneasy.

It’s a fast read, and although it starts off slow it does build momentum quickly. Towards the end it’s hard to put down. There are many scary occurrences. When Jenny finds the painting, the horror is detailed so well that I could see it perfectly. The writing is accessible and the dialog is fast-moving, with easily digestible chunks that enhance the suspense and push the story to its frightening climax.

This is a good suspense book despite its old-fashioned heroine. I had some minor problems with Jenny that I’m pretty sure didn’t bother me years ago, relating to how weak, naïve, and just plain unlikely she is. Jenny tolerates many of Erich’s growing eccentricities for much longer than I found realistic for this day and age, but then again, this book was written a few decades ago. It’s hard to imagine a modern woman accepting such dependence and isolation and being completely romantically focused on her man despite annoyances such as his continual talking about Caroline. I just had a hard time seeing past that, especially when she’s sick during her pregnancy. On the one hand she’s hard to root for. But on the other hand, reading about what happens to this old-fashioned innocent woman as a result of her rushing into a relationship with someone she barely knows is very suspenseful – scary, inevitable, shocking. The book managed to hook, then disturb me for a second time. It has an effective combination of romance and mystery, and it held my attention throughout.

One of the worst books I've read in my life. If this would've been my first book by Mary Higgins Clark, it would had been the last. It is not my first book, but it is definitely the last one.
The plot is slow, the characters are not believable nor lovable. It's too bizarre. Every page makes you want to make up for the lost time... but, in the hope of a better ending or a twist, I finished the book, and I must say that 1 star is too much.
If I see it in a bookstore, i would probably hide it, so nobody has to go through the pain and disapointment of reading this book...
Terrible book, poor story, characters too forced and a disappointing outcome.

I grabbed this book off a community shelf at work to have something to read at lunch. I don't know why I read the whole thing other than I was bored and interested just to see how bad it would get. I cannot understand how you can write a character that is supposedly an independent and "strong" woman who would let a man be so posessive, manipulative and then decide to marry him. She had multiple early warnings and still jumped head first into marriage so she could feel taken care of. I was so frustrated by the end I wanted to scream. I haven't read any of her other books and doubt I will read any more. I didn't like the character and her ability to write off utterly unacceptable behavior and ultimately accept the blame for most issues. It was bizare and creepy and just not an enjoyable book. Don't bother.

When I travel, I bring along pulpy or fluffy mysteries to leave at the airport when I'm done. This one ended up with me, and it was absolutely ridiculous. People like this author? Her protagonist was pathetic from the get-go, and continued to ignore her internal warnings. The guy gets a tiny stain on the wall paper and then has it re-wallpapered? He disappears for days on end without leaving access to a phone or vehicle? Sure, he's a good one. At least it was pulpy--I read it through to the end because I was a bit curious about the plot, but it's nothing I'd recommend. I thought it might have a bit of Mrs. Rochester from Jane Ayer, but even putting the two books in the same thought is giving too much praise.

Perhaps the MHC book that I have read the least( only 2x) but only because it was so terrifying. When a young mother, Jenny meets the charming, Erich- sparks fly. Soon they are married and Jenny and her children are moving to Erich's Minnesota farm. Soon the shine begins to dim and nights on the farm give way to terror as it it is clear that Erich is not all that he seems.

Mary Higgins Clark really dug deep in 1982 and created a suspenseful mystery that kept me on the edge of my seat with all of the lights in the house on. I feel like I never talk about this one much when discussing the late author's novels, but I see so many of the scenes from this book so clearly in my mind. Such a great book!

For a rote write MHC did a pretty believable job of describing the process of grooming perpetrators practice on their chosen victims-to-be. Handsome! Rich! Fun with kids! And boy oh boy he wants to marry me after knowing me for a month! What could go wrong?

I do wish these simple carbohydrate books didn’t always have romance B ready to leap in when romance A falls apart. Geez, one could imagine that if one had lived that nightmare, avoiding romance completely for a long while; at least time to figure out how the frick THAT happened, might be advisable, no?

To paraphrase I review I'd recently read concerning this book:

I absolutely love Mary Higgins Clark and I believe that I have read all of her books (well at least 30), but A Cry in the Night is one of the shining star of her collection. She takes a very naive woman who is trying hard, as a single mother and working full-time to support her family, and puts her in this comfortable and convenient position that she just can't say NO to.

I've found Mary Higgins Clark to create interesting and beautifully created suspense novels.

Just writing this review makes me want to pick up my very worn copy and start this book all over again.

I am impressed by all of her books, but in her earlier novels her character plots are similar. We have this attractive, successful woman who has a great job, is single predominately, and comes across a mystery that she somehow has managed to get herself involved in.

Nevertheless, I am still a huge fan of her books and would recommend anyone who loves a great mystery to give this book a read. It is well worth your time.

The consequences that you have to face when you marry a psychopath.
Jenny meets Erich .
Jenny marries Erich.
They just meet a few times and BAM, Erich pops up the question to Jenny. I was like screaming when Jenny said YES to Erich .How stupid can this girl get .Marrying someone without knowing anything about him or his history .Before i could process what was happening, they get married and Erich whisks her off from the city to his mansion .
Everything seemed perfect at the beginning ,but then slowly the mansion turns into a Prison and she a prisoner .He seemed exactly like a character from Gillian Flynn's books. That is why i loved this book . It was creepy yet so good !! Like Clark's other books , this was a predictable story unlike Flynn's books. Oh ,now i am making a comparison of Clark and Flynn.
Psychological thriller has become my favorite genre ever since i started reading Gillian Flynn's books .And this was pretty much on the same line. My first read of 2017 . The year started off on a good note book wise !

This was an umpteenth re-read for me of this book. I first fell in love with MHC because of this book and I try to reread it every year or so. I know what happens to Jenny McPartland now, but every time I read it, I'm right there with that character again.

LOVE this book!

My first novel by the queen of suspense: "a cry in the night" might not have been the best starting point. The premise was quite poor “getting married within 1 month with the first guy who adores your children and spends money on you” sounds like a pretty naïve and bad decision. I also spotted the man plot miles away… and yet, there was something that made it hard to put the book down. She certainly understands how to keep up suspense and how to make a reader turn those pages. Then, there was the sad truth of women worldwide experiencing trauma from their husbands.

In summary: 2 stars for premise, 4 for suspense. Overall, I don’t think that this book will be my last of her.

¿HOLA? xD No sé, yo me esperaba algo mejor.

Wow what a horrible book filled with a creepy romance, an unlikable main character and unrealistic plot lines.

Jenny MacPartland is an idiot. She falls in love with millionaire artist Erich Krueger and after a month of knowing the guy she marries him and uproots her and her 2 daughters from NYC to Erich's mansion in the country. I know if I marry someone and move out of state with my children, I would want to know every detail. I would want to know about the person that I am marrying and also see the house that I would be living in. Jenny doesn't do any of that and doesn't even think twice about moving and marrying Erich (even when there is warning signs!!). Once at the isolated mansion, Jenny begins to realise that life as a Kruger isn't as great as she thought it was.

The mystery wasn't too surprising and there were so many parts that were just creepy (and not in a good way). I would never recommend this novel to anyone.

No, horrible.

Many people highly oppose the fact that the main character is not the strongest, most dependent character who has ever been created. If you don't mind having an unorthodox protagonist, then this book is fantastic and eerie- not every book has to have a strong leading character. Therefore, I think this book stands our among Mary Higgin Clark's books because it follows a different style of characters. It does not lead as much of a surprise as many of her novels but the moments within are very well-written. Perhaps not her finest, but definitely one worth a read.

What an exciting book! As with all Clark books, I was caught up in the story right from the very beginning. Jenny works at an art gallery, but she is a busy single mom and struggling to make ends meet because of a charming but deadbeat dad. When she meets Erich, a talented and handsome artist, and he begins to make himself indispensable in her life, she's caught up in a whirlwind romance and marries him. When they move to his home farm in Minnesota, things start to get strange with his erratic and possessive behavior. The suspense is built slowly but steadily, with a brief prologue at the beginning to give us a taste of what's to come. Jenny starts to doubt herself as the mystery about Erich and his family gets more complicated. Good secondary characters of Rooney (another local eccentric), Mark (the handsome vet), and various other townsfolk. Another winner.

I'm a fan of Mary Higgins Clark books. I love her story lines and the fact that she doesn't use vulgar language and crude sexual references. But this book frustrated me. A lot. The protagonist was a pushover. She tolerated way too much of her husband's psycho behavior. I would get frustrated to the point where I would close the book, throw it down and have to get up and do something else. But I always came back to it because I was so curious to see how it ended. (And also because I have this thing with finishing what I start). Anyway, don't judge all of Mary Higgins Clark's books by this one.

I hate to give a MHC book 2 stars but I just couldn’t deal with this one! From the get-go I was annoyed with the main character and just had a feeling of unease throughout the whole book. The main character’s responses to the events in this book just didn’t make sense. It was a necessary read on my journey through MHC’s works, but if I hadn’t been working through all of them I would’ve quit this one pretty early on.
