A Cat Named Squeeky

Rate this book
A Cat Named Squeeky is a true story of a stray cat. Where did she come from? No one knew. Did anyone in the neighborhood want to keep her? Not really. Not even the two people who offered food, temporary shelter, and a name. The name worked and the cat stayed. For 19 years. Creative, humorous, informative, and emotionally moving, A Cat Named Squeeky celebrates animal companionship, and underscores the love and respect all animals deserve.

A Cat Named Squeeky by Vic Reskovic is a memoir of a stray cat who befriended the author and decided to make her home there. Because of her unusual vocalizations he named her Squeeky.

Reskovic explains early on that he and his wife had never had a pet. They weren't looking to get a cat. But they quickly learned that cats often pick their homes and their people.

The book reminded me of Dewey by Vicki Myron. This is another memoir of the life of a cat with all the details of someone unfamiliar with cats learning how to live with a cat. Like Dewey, Squeeky had a long life, even if it did start out as a stray.

Although A Cat Named Squeeky sat on my wishlist for nearly two years, I happened to read it after a stray kitten charmed her way into my life. So I read it while making mental comparisons to my own experiences with Tortuga kitten.

I recommend the book to cat people.

Anyone who has/had a beloved cat at some point in their life will be able to connect with some aspect of this story. A quick, simple read about how the life of one couple was changed forever when they adopted a stray cat. This story hit home on many levels for me... My beloved Fuzzy, who lived with us for 20 years, was a stray we found at the pool in the summer of '82. With many of the anecdotes about Squeeky, I felt like it was a recap of my kitty! Even down to the health issues once she became a senior citizen. I laughed, snorted, shook my head, and nodded along at all of Squeeky's endeavors, and I snot-sobbed at the eventual conclusion.

Vic nailed it: I was definitely a "Lucky One".

Though they liked animals, Vic and his wife, Cindy, had never owned a pet and didn’t want one, but when this pretty little kitty wandered into the yard, but she didn’t belong to any of the neighbours, she just made herself comfortable in their lives and stayed for 19 years!

Ok, this doesn’t really deserve such a high rating, but part of it is an emotional rating from me. It’s a simple story, large font, short chapters, short book. Much of the book focused on when they first found Squeeky and when she got old, but, it was humourous and what a sweet kitty! When she got old, she developed two health issues that my previous boy developed (though he didn’t make it to 20ish years old!). Miss Squeeky was also very chatty, as is my newest cat. Enjoyable book, but of course, heartbreaking at the end.

She was one of the neighborhood strays, unloved, unwanted, a small cat in a large world. Then two people, who also did not want her, were moved to offer her a very temporary sanctuary that last nineteen love-filled years. Squeeky is a celebration of the wonder that is cats, their resilience, their resourcefulness, their infinite capacity to receive and return our love. If you have ever loved a cat, this is a book that will touch your heart. If you have ever watched a weary, battered neighborhood cat padding down the sidewalk and wondered...this might just change your life, and for the better.

The writing style wasn’t the best but it was short enough so I finished it. The end had me bawling, as anyone who has ever loved and said goodbye to a beloved pet will understand. ❤️

I really enjoyed A Cat Named Squeeky. It was different than some of the other cat books that I have read where either the author or the cat went through something really traumatic. This is just a story about a cat that showed up and made itself at home. It is a lovely story about how an unlikely stray cat turned some non-pet owners into cat lovers. It is also unique that the writer/narrator is a man. Most of the other cat books I have read have been written by women.

Plot: .

It is written very well. It is an easy read and the story is organized very well in chronological order. Vic has a good voice and gives us good descriptions about the life of Squeeky so we feel that we are actually there enjoying the antics of Squeeky. Ever so often, he interjects his thoughts about life, cats, and the passage of time but its never intrusive to the story. This book is rather short at 167 pages but it was for me a touching, enjoyable read.

A Cat Named Squeeky is a lovely book about a cat that turned two non-pet people into cat people who truly loved her. Come and get to know Squeeky and all the wonderful cat things about her life. It is a lovely journey that all cat lovers will enjoy reading about.

Well, having recently lost our long time male cat who went by the same name as the protagonist, I came across this book and after leafing through it, thought I would get some comfort or perspective on one's connection with pets, cats in particular and dealing with the loss.

While reading the book, I kind of got some of that feeling, but the story felt a bit contrived at times and the writing a bit formulaic - knowing full well that I was not looking for fine literature - and so, I will leave it at that.

If you are a cat fan, you will like it.

If you are a dog fan, read it to confirm your dislike of cats and cat owners. It is all laid bare here.

If you are a mature and introspective adult, you will wonder why you bothered.

From the Back Cover:
This is a true story of a stray cat. Hanging around the neighborhood. One day sitting on the trunk of a parked car. The next day scurrying across the street, running toward the empty lot. Where did she come from? Was she lost? Abandoned? It doesn't matter what you call it. Either way, she was homeless.

My Opinion:

This was a very sweet story of a stray cat from approximately age 1 (no one really knew how old she was in the beginning)until her death at age approximately 19, and the family who took her in and cared for her.

this is a cute tale of a stray talkitive cat that works her way into a young couples life. Squeeky has a personality as big as Texas and a demanding personality to boot. This is a great little tale to read. It will make you think of friends you have had over the years and loved.
I am thinking of my cat Sam the Battering Ram and Freddie the Freeloader.
A great memoir to a cute kittie.

Loved the style of this book. My cat, Loki, sounds much like Squeeky and I related to the actions of both cat and people.
