Life is a Caravanserai follows a lively, but rather unfortunate family from Istanbul to Bursa, then to Ankara and back to Istanbul. This is a women’s the mother, Fatma, nurtures her three children, with the grandmother Ayşe and the “aunties” of the neighbourhood, while Mustafa, the often unemployed father, recites Orhan Veli and drinks copious rakı, dreaming of building a larger family home. Here is the Turkey of the 1950s and early 1960s, with its political struggles, growing urbanisation, the Korean War, American comic books and the departure of the first wave of workers to Germany. The Anatolian grandparents carry with them their sagas of the war and the nascent Turkish Republic, enriched by wisdom, humour and village folklore.The author’s wonderful use of local narrative, storytelling, proverbs and prayers, and a prose that moves from the lyrical to gritty humour, re-creates this microcosm of neighbourhoods from a young girl’s intimate perspective. We follow her as she sits in school, visits relatives, dreams, listens to stories and experiments with early passions. Reality merges into mythological visions as, naïve, witty and explorative, she absorbs the colourful world around her.

About the author

Emine Sevgi Özdamar (born 10 August 1946, in Malatya, Turkey), is a Turkish-German actress, director and author.

Özdamar has received a lot of recognition for her work. A lover of poetry, she found great inspiration in the works of Heinrich Heine and Bertolt Brecht, especially from an album of the latter's songs which she had bought in the 1960s in Berlin. She later decided to study with Brecht's disciple Benno Besson in Berlin, where she currently resides.

Sevgi Özdamar gibi çok kıymetli bir yazarımızın değerinin bu kadar az bilinmesi beni üzüyor. Çok farklı, büyülü bir roman Hayat Bir Kervansaray. Küçük bir kız çocuğunun anlatıcının hayatı adeta kervansaray gibi geçiyor okuyucunun gözünün önünden. Cinler, periler gibi ögeler de var romanda, bu nedenle büyülü gerçekçilik türünde de denilebilir. Sevgili Arsız Ölüm'ü sevenler kesinlikle bir şans vermeli bu romana. Aynı zamanda çok başarılı bir çevirisi var, Ayça Sabuncuoğlu sanki kitabın ana dili Türkçeymişçesine yapmış çevirisini. Dilerim ki Sevgi Özdamar okurları çoğalır. Aynı zamanda yazarın Youtube'da bulunan 2 adet Boğaziçi Üniversitesi söyleşisi var, onları da dinlemenizi tavsiye ederim, ben kitap bitince dinlemek için yarıda bırakmıştım şimdi izlemeye devam edeceğim :)

Uzun şiirsel bir çocukluk masalı. Arkada Türkiye'nin değişmeyen, değişemeyen yaşantısı. Dini travmatik fikir öbekleri, küçük bir kızın muhayyilesine yerleşen fantastik gerçeklikler. Müthiş bir üslup.

Emine Sevgi Özdamar çok zamandır okumak istediğim, Almanya'da yaşayıp Almanca yazarak Türkiye'yi anlatmasıyla çok ilginç bulduğum bir yazardı.

İlk okuduğum kitabı Hayat Bir Kervansaray oldu ve hayran kaldım. Ülke içinde tanınırlığının bu kadar az olması beni daha da şaşırttı.

Trende doğumuyla başlayıp, trenle Almanya'ya işçi olarak göç etmesiyle biten çocukluk ve ilk gençlik sürecini sanki derin bir nefes gibi yıllarca içinde tutmuş ve bu kitabı yazarken dışarı bırakmış. Yarı otobiyografik, kurgulaştırılmış anı diyebiliriz bence türüne.

Başta okuması yorucu gibiydi, her şey çok yoğun, çok hızlı, çok yüklü oluyor gibiydi ama ritme kaptırınca son derece akıcı bir okuma oldu.

Babasının herhangi bir işte başarılı olamaması sebebiyle içinde bulundukları fakirliği, şehir şehir gezmeleri, aile, arkadaşlık ve mahalle ilişkilerini, ama en önemlisi bir yetişkinin gözünden hatırladığı çocukluk anıları Hayat Bir Kervansaray. Kitapta özellikle kız çocuklarının sokakta, bakkalda, otobüste maruz kaldığı tacizler o kadar gerçek ve kısa anlar olarak anlatılmış ki, içime oturdu her okuduğum. Kahramanın ninesiyle ve abisiyle arkadaşlığı, sokaklarda gezmesi, çocukluk oyunları, arkadaşlıkları çok güzel anlatılmış. Aynı zamanda ülkenin içinde bulunduğu politik durum da anlatıya sıkça yansıyor. Mahalleli teyzelerin konuşmalarıyla, anne ve babanın haberlerden söz etme şekliyle ailenin bulunduğu konumu da rahatça anlayabiliyoruz.

Kitap İnce Memed, Beyaz Kale ve Berci Kristin Çöp Masallar'yla birlikte "1001 books you must read before you die" listesine girmiş.

Bir zamanların kültürel yapısını büyülü gerçeklik tadında muhteşem bir anlatıya döndürerek elimden bırkakmak istemediğim bir roman. Yazarı Emine Sevgi Özdamar bu ay Boğaziçi Üniversite'sine konuk olunca hiç sektirmeden tanışmaya gittim. İyi ki de gitmişim çok eğlenceliydi.

An interesting, unique, difficult to read, basically plotless, coming of age story set in Turkey during the 1950s and 1960s, told from a young girl’s perspective. There is a lot of repetition and dull dialogue. The writing voice is quite distinctive. The girl is brought up in a poor family and the family moves a number of times with the father seeking employment. The girl’s grandmother has many short stories to tell.

Here is a random example of the author’s writing style:

“When someone dies, it’s as though a stone has set itself on your chest and won’t get off again. When a person you love places his soul in Allah’s hands and dies, forty candles will burn in you….there’s no village except death in this world of lies,” said Grandmother Ayse.” (Page 64 of Middlesex University World Literature Series edition).

I am glad I read this novel as it takes the novel form to a new level of inventiveness.

Ich habe Özdamars Werk mit großer Begeisterung gelesen und empfehle es jedem, der über das harte Leben in ärmlichen türkischen Verhältnissen in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts lernen möchte.
Özdamar schafft es gekonnt, die vielseitige Kultur der Türkei ungeschönt und ohne Umschweife darzustellen. Mit ihrer tiefen Analyse familiärer und gesellschaftlicher Zwänge hat Özdamar ein zeitloses Stück Autofiktion geschaffen, das nicht nur für Kenner der türkischen Kultur spannend ist.
Ihre auf starke Repetition fußende Erzählweise unterstreicht meiner Meinung nach gekonnt die Verfestigung kultureller Zwänge. Mit ihren unzähligen kuriosen Figuren hat Özdamar ein breites Bild über türkische Lebensrealitäten gezeichnet.

Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Almanya 'da yaşayan, eserlerini Almanca veren bir yazar. Buraya kadar bence bi gariplik yok, ama eserlerinin bu denli bizden olup asla bizlerde geniş kitlelere ulaşmaması, aldığı onlarca ödülden haberdar olmamamız, mutlaka okunmalı diyen listelerden bir haber olmamız bakın işte bu çok garip.

Büyülü gerçeklik teması ile Osmanlı dönemlerinin tesirinden yakın Türkiye tarihi ve kül olarak bizim topraklarımızın hikayesini okumak istiyorum diyenler buyursunlar.

Much like A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Life Is a Caravanserai is a stream of conscious fictionalized memoir of the author's childhood. But I enjoyed it much more than Joyce's more famous book. Life is a Caravanserai tells the story of a young girl growing up in 50s and 60s Turkey with an extended family that is always struggling for money, bound by superstition and trapped by societal expectations. There are many incredible characters with off the wall character traits and mythical stories. Ozdamar creates a captivating world and paints a picture of what it was like to grow up as she did. I had never heard of this book until I found it listed on the 1001 Books to Read Before You Die and I'm glad I did. I can't believe it's as obscure as it is. It deserves to be a classic.

I enjoyed this novel which I think is partly memoir. Ozdamar has a unique writing style, largely what I would call impressionistic. The story is told chronologically and in a mostly stream-of-consciousness style without chapter or paragraph breaks. There is a nice amount of humor.

Reason Read: botm June 2022 Reading 1001, Asian Author (Turkey). This is a coming of age story told by Emine Sevgi Özdamar and I think this story probably reflects her own experiences and I also think that it is told in a poetic and crude ways which I suspect might be true to the culture and reflects a woman's world in this middle east setting. The time is the politically turbulent period following WWII. The family has many difficulties and moves frequently; Istanbul to Bursa, then to Ankara and back to Istanbul.

This book was both hard and easy to read. The lack of breaks between events and stories and no chapters makes it a bit hard but the actual reading moves along without problem. It is a memoir, distorted by the way a youth will see things but also filled with folklore and the way the author puts together sentences almost poetic. Coming of age: The story introduces us to the protagonist while she is a foetus and takes us to her decision to leave her family and go to Germany with the first wave of workers to Germany. The book was written in German.

In 2008 habe ich einige E-mails mit Nurşah und andere Freunde auf ESÖzdamar ausgetauscht. Damals möchtete ich sie auf Deutsch lesen und ich brauchte fast 9 Jahre für das. Dieses Buch ist ein Geschenk von Deniz für meinen letzten Geburstag. Ich frage mich ob die Deutsche Leser dieses Roman deutlich verstehen können denn es gibt viele Ausdrücke auf Türkisch die die Schriftstellerin mot-a-mot auf Deutsch übergesetzt hatte. Machmal habe ich die Gesischten einbisschen langsam aber das Mädchen - die Hauptcharakter- ist sehr frei, seine Familie hat beide die Traditionen aber sind linke politisch. Und es war interressant um Bursa und Anatolien im Jahren 50 und 60.

The experiences and thoughts of a girl growing up in Turkey in the 1950s and 60s. She's in a poor family, with her father mostly out of work, and the family of parents, four children and grandmother move from city to city getting by on whatever her father can earn or borrow. But what we hear about mostly is the life of the street, the traditional tales of the grandmother, the numerous neighbours who visit, the dead, and the girl's feverish illnesses and dreams.

It's sometimes confusing, sometimes sad, often raunchy, with a strong sense of place and, despite the references to politics and world events, a timeless quality.

This is a fascinating semi-autographical series of vignettes about a girl growing up in Turkey at about the same time as me. The author was born in 1946, two years after me. It is puzzling, funny, frustrating and sublime - the kind of book one remembers with affection but is quite difficult to actually read. Emine Sevgi Ozdamar wrote this book in German, having emigrated to Germany at the age of 18. It begins and ends on a train, the first at her birth and the latter as she departs Turkey for Germany. It consists of the observations of a curious and perceptive child as she lives in Istanbul, Bursa and Ankara, constantly moving because her feckless father has trouble making or borrowing enough money to provide for his growing family. One of her devices is the use of repetition. Each evening she recites prayers for all the people she has met. This list grows as she meets more people, so she is praying for the six hundred and thirtieth soldier who died sitting in the rain, having listed all the other soldiers who had come before. Or the "husband of Aunt Sidika, who fet a little better than a son-in-law who has to live with his parents-in-law". She lives with her mother and sometimes her father, with her paternal grandmother with whom she has a close relationship, her older brother and a younger brother and sister. Her grandmother provides traditional advice which the protagonist heeds, despite her grandmother being illiterate, something she understands because her grandmother often holds the newspaper upside down and is obsessed with the health of everyone she knows. The background is of a turbulent time in Turkish history, whether one is a Democrat or a Republican is of huge importance and the military coup takes place without the protagonist being really aware of what is happening. One extremely interesting aspect of the story is the frankness about sexual matters, which completely surprised me. There is much talk about women having"little boxes" which they cover with their hands, while boys can take their goods for walks. When her brother starts having wet dreams her mother is very matter-of-fact about the fact that "the devil has visited during the night" and washes his sheets. The protagonist knows that couples have to wash from head to foot before the sun rises if they have had sex during the night and so she watches for water dripping from heads as people leave for work. All this sounds like fun, but children sitting around looking at an old man as he fondles himself, or her father walking around with his penis exposed leaves the reader feeling slightly queasy. And there are many passages which seem impenetrable, flights of fancy and snippets of magic realism which left me too keen to set the book aside. But it is a book which I feel proud to have read.

Ein Buch das ich nur häppchenweise lesen kann, zu fantastisch, anstrengende Bildsprache, vielleicht bin ich zu ungeduldig für dieses Buch, es liegt jetzt halb gelesen bei mir, wer will kann es haben;-)
Nein, wer will kann es nicht haben.. Nächsten ich "Ein von Schatten begrenzter Raum" gelesen habe, nehme ich es nun wieder in die Hand und kann mich drauf einlassen. Phantastisch

Özdamar, Haldun Taner, Muhsin Ertuğrul gibi tiyatronun duayen isimlerinden eğitim almış, dramaturgluk, tiyatro oyunculuğu, yazarlık gibi farklı meslek dallarını kariyerine eklemiş birisi. Kendisine Emine ismini Ece Ayhan vermiş. ☺️ 1974 yılında Almanya'ya giden yazar, eserlerini Almanca olarak yazıyor. O nedenle kapakta yer alan çeviri ibaresi sizi şaşırtmasın.

1991 İngeborg Bachmann Roman Ödülü'nü kazanan Hayat Bir Kervansaray'a gelecek olursak; roman okuduğum hiçbir şeye benzemiyor. Ama bir yandan da öyle tanıdık, öyle içten ki sanki benim çocukluğum kaleme almış yazılanları. Sevgi'nin doğumuyla birlikte genç bir kadın olma serüvenine, ninesine, komşularına, Demokrat Parti'ye kadar her şey var içinde. İlk kez regl olmak da var, gece uyumadan ölülere dua ederkenki masum hisler de. Büyülü gerçeklik sizi sarıveriyor. Okumak çok kolay değil. Yer yer uzuuuun bir Şehrazat masalı dinlermiş gibi hissediyorsunuz. Ama hep merak ediyorsunuz. Bu nineye, bu aileye neler olacak acaba diye. Dieses Buch fängt an, als ein ungeborenes Kind im Bauch ihrer Mutter bemerkt, daß Soldatenmäntel nach toten Soldaten riechen, und dann lässt es nicht mehr los: in ein hastiges, impressionistisches Erzählfluss, schildert es ein Kinderleben und gibt auch ein seltsames Blickwinkel auf die Türkei der 50er und 60er Jahre.

Es haftet nah an die innere Erlebnisse des Kindes, und alle Beobachtungen sind auf ihre Art erzählt, zusammengehalten von wiederholte Gedanken, Geschichten (oft mehrmals erzählt), wiederholte Sätze, Rituäle, Beschworungen gegen das Ungluck und die Hölle, Gebete. Das Kind sammelt Toten und zählt sie auf, betet für sie, jede Nacht vor dem Schlaf. Diese Litanei ist auch eine Anordnung ihrer Erinnerungen.

Dieser Art von Erzählen lässt die Familienmitglieder (Mutter, Vater, Großmutter, Bruder) scharf hervorstechen, mit ihre characteristischen Zügen -- nicht karikiert, aber so, als ob man sie gleich erkennen würde. Auch ihre Sorgen sind verständlich, wenn nur indirekt geschildert.

Am Ende muss die Erzählerin (wie die Autorin) die Turkei verlassen; vorher befreit sie sich, indem sie die Anfänge wieder besucht.

Almanya da yaşıyan, ödüller alan bir yazarın Türkiye’de yeterince tanınır olmamasına hayıflandım. Ki benim için de çok geç kalmış bir okumaydı. Yazar 1940 -1960 dönemini arka planına alıp bir kızın büyüme hikayesini ( otobiyografik), kimi zaman büyülü gerçekçiliğe varan hayran olduğum bir dille anlatıyor. Almanca yazıyor ancak Almancayı Türkçe yazmış. Çok okunmalı

Tämä turkkilainen tarina on tytön kasvutarina äidin kohdusta siihen, kun tyttö aikanaan muuttaa Saksaan. Matkan varrelle mahtuu monenlaista elämää eri puolilla Turkkia: tyttö asuu perheineen niin Istanbulissa, Anatolian syrjäseuduilla kuin arolla Ankaran lähistöllä. Tapahtumat ovat suurin piirtein omaelämäkerrallisia, kirjan tytöllä on paljon yhtymäkohtia Emine Sevgi Özdamarin omaan elämään.

Oltiin missä oltiin, perheen isä on yksi säätäjä, joka ei liiemmin onnistu pyrkimyksissään. Tytön elämässä tärkeämpiä hahmoja ovatkin äiti ja isoäiti, jotka ovat arjessa enemmän läsnä. Tytön maailma on täynnä värikkäitä ihmisiä, uskontoa, taikauskoa, Turkin yhteiskunnan mullistuksia ja kehityksiä. Elämässä on köyhyyttä, kurjuutta, mutta myös monenlaista henkistä rikkautta.

Tapahtumat vyöryvät päälle, Özdamarin tyyli on vahvan impressionistista. Kovin selkeää rakennetta ei ole, kirjassa vain tulvii värikylläisiä ja aistivoimaisia tapahtumia päälle. Tämä kirja maistuu, tuoksuu ja haisee. Luin ennen tätä Ginzburgin Kielen jota puhuimme ja molempia teoksia yhdistää samanlainen päällekäyvyys, jossa tapahtumia ei ole suotta kirjallisella rakenteella eroteltu toisistaan. Eletyn elämän kuvauksia molemmat, toki. Ginzburgin Italia oli helpommin lähestyttävä kuin Özdamarin maaginen Turkki, jossa on paljon taianomaista ja vain kummallista ainesta.

Saksaksi kirjoittava Özdamar on jatkanut elämäntarinaansa tämän esikoisteoksensa jälkeen kahdessa muussakin kirjassa, mutta niitä ei sitten ole enää suomennettu. Harmi sinänsä; vaikka Elämä on karavaaniseralji vähän vaikeaksi lukukokemukseksi osoittautuikin, olisin kyllä jatkanut tämän parissa.

Ich bin ein bisschen zwiegespalten, was das Buch angeht. Ich fand es sprachlich sehr spannend, die Redewendungen und sehr bildhafte Sprache, die Aneinanderreihung von Märchen und Geschichten, die doch sehr viel über das Leben an einem Ort zu einer Zeit erzählen kann. Ich fand auch die Perspektive des Kindes mit seinen fantastischen Elementen spannend - nur nicht über das ganze Buch hinweg. All diese Dinge haben sich ab der Hälfte erschöpft und ich musste mich zwingen weiterzulesen. Da die Erzählung kein Ziel verfolgt, kam für mich auch das Ende sehr überraschend, also nicht, dass es endet, das hätte es irgendwo gekonnt, sondern die aktive Entscheidung. Da die Erzählung so stark mit der Sprache verbunden war, wäre es spannend zu wissen,inwiefern sich der Umzug nach Deutschland darauf auswirkt. Abe das wäre dann wohl ein anderes Buch gewesen

En todellakaan osaa antaa tälle kirjalle tähtiä: mitä tahansa yhden ja viiden välillä, joten olkoon sitten kolme. Özdamarin romaani on käsittämätön, raskas, kummallinen, impressionistinen matka Turkkiin, sen historiaan ja kulttuuriin mutta erityisesti päähenkilön ja parin muun naisen elämään.

Kun juna lähtee alussa rajusti liikkeelle, se ei pysähdy ennen loppua: Kirjassa ei ole lukuja vaan sama tykitys jatkuu alusta loppuun. Kummallinen runsaudensarvi pulppuaa ulos kaikkea kummallista, kiinnostavaa, huvittavaa, ällöttävää, kyseenalaista.

Minulla ei ole aavistustakaan siitä, mitä pidin tästä kirjasta. Siteeraankin tässä kohtaa mummuani, jolla on varsin toimiva lause vastaaviin tilanteisiin: "On ainakin erikoinen." Mitään vastaavaa en tosiaan ole koskaan lukenut.

First of all: I’m impressed because the author wrote this book originally in German and not in her first language-Turkish.

There isn’t really a plot. The book is mostly episodic, kind of like, the narrator randomly remembering events. Not really 100% picaresque though. The book is told mostly by a narrator who is a child. There are moments of bad things happening but they aren’t seen by the narrator as what we see them as.

One thing I’m not super crazy about in books is toilet humor. There’s quite a bit of crudity. But there’s also interesting…folkish(?) elements.

Overall I think it’s a good read because it gives a portrait of working-class and borderline-impoverished life in Turkey during the 50’s-60’s

Kitabın dili gerçekten çok değişikti imgelerle dolu edebi açıdan beni besleyen ama aynı zamanda da yoran bir kitap oldu. Yazarın kitabın aslını Almanca yazdığını öğrendim. Çevirisi beni rahatsız etmedi ama tabii ki ne kadar güçlü olduğunu bilemiyorum. Özellikle dedenin anlattığı Osmanlı’nın son günleri ve Kurtuluş Savaşı kısımları çok güzeldi. Bu tür kültürel ve sosyal olaylar son derece yalın bir dille dile getirilmişti. Anlatıcı kızın iç dünyasını anlamaya çalışmak yorucu olsa da edebi olarak okuması keyifli bir kitaptı.

Hab den Roman vor ungefähr einem Monat für einen Unikurs gelesen, und sowie jedes andere Buch, dass ich jemals für die Schule/Uni lesen musste, hat es mir nicht gefallen (The Hate U Give ausgenommen). Der Schreibstil war für mich persönlich sehr unzugänglich. Alles in allem fand ich den Roman nur mittelmäßig.

Another book that was just not for me. I thought that, while interesting at times, the society she described was too rigid, religious and also way too superstitious at the same time. I just never got into it and spent the entire book plodding along.
