Sam Smith Mystery #15

The Devil and Ms Devlin

Rate this book
In her heyday, the critics regarded Dana Devlin as the most beautiful actress in movies. They also regarded her as shallow, lacking emotion. That was strange because Dana Devlin’s life had been a rollercoaster of emotions, with divorces and nervous breakdowns to the fore. And now she was making a comeback, in a gothic romance, Demon Seed.

Everyone’s a critic, it seems, because someone didn’t like the sound of Demon Seed, and they voiced their disapproval through a series of death threats. However, the death threats were covered in hearts, flowers and angels. What was going on?

Demetrios Angelopoulos, Dana’s lover, and the producer of Demon Seed, asked me to investigate the death threats. Meanwhile, I recruited Faye, Mac and Blake to ensure that Ms Devlin came to no harm.

As the cameras rolled, I opened a can of worms, which led to the spilling of secrets and murder. And Dana Devlin? She was about to play her greatest role, a role that would reshape her life.

What is love? You'll find so many different varieties of the ways people express their love in this book. From the sweet, cute interactions between Sam and Alan (especially after they haven't seen each other for a few days) to the "taming" of a he-man by his hippy wife. Possessive, protective, perverse... they are all there.

While unraveling the mystery, Sam has to make several choices--turn in those who have abused the law, knowing her decisions may destroy lives--or let them go free while she tries to discover the perpetrator of a deeper crime: murder.
Plenty of unsavory characters you'll want to be the guilty party... all hiding secrets.

And best of all, more great looks at Wales. It gives you a chance to visit this beautiful country without leaving home.

In the Sam Smith Mystery series we meet a down to earth private eye who is typically English. There are no hectic car chases, no bedroom romps and no gruesome scenes. How refreshing to read a book where the story is plausible (except for Demetrios Angelopoulos, who I felt acted a little out of character for such a successful business man). I like Sam, she has a quirky sense of humour, a sensible attitude and a modern, confident outlook on life. The characters were introduced in such a way as to allow the reader to get to know them and I appreciate the way the story moves forward without too much fluff and detail. An easy, uncomplicated read and I shall look for more by this author.

This is an enjoyable series about Sam Smith and her sleuthing capabilities; this time, involving the world of making movies.

It starts with death threats and ends...read it to find out, you won't be disappointed.

Sam is a likeable character, as are some of the other regulars. The sense of place is always good, with interesting pieces of history alongside.

A well-written and enjoyable story...highly recommended.
