Poppleton loves summer! He relaxes on his rooftop. He drives to the country for an adventure with his friend Hudson. And he especially enjoys a summer rain shower!
This brand-new story collection perfect for beginning readers includes a how-to-draw activity in the back of the book!
An author of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for children and young adults as well as an author and author/illustrator of picture books for children, Cynthia Rylant is recognized as a gifted writer who has contributed memorably to several genres of juvenile literature. A prolific author who often bases her works on her own background, especially on her childhood in the West Virginia mountains, she is the creator of contemporary novels and historical fiction for young adults, middle-grade fiction and fantasy, lyrical prose poems, beginning readers, collections of short stories, volumes of poetry and verse, books of prayers and blessings, two autobiographies, and a biography of three well-known children's writers; several volumes of the author's fiction and picture books are published in series, including the popular "Henry and Mudge" easy readers about a small boy and his very large dog.
Rylant is perhaps most well known as a novelist. Characteristically, she portrays introspective, compassionate young people who live in rural settings or in small towns and who tend to be set apart from their peers.
First sentence: It was summer. Poppleton loved lying on his roof in summer. It was his favorite way to relax.
Premise/plot: Do you know Poppleton? Poppleton is back in another early chapter book. These Poppleton stories are set in summer, of course. The three stories are "Pink," "The Jeep," and "The Rain." In Pink, Poppleton gets sunburned. But he doesn't let that stop him from living life and enjoying the company of friends. In "The Jeep," Poppleton (and friend) go to the country in a jeep. He gets a little carried away in this jeep! Good thing there are cows that don't mind helping out. In "The Rain," Poppleton enjoys the rain.
My thoughts: Is this my favorite Poppleton collection? Probably not. Do I still enjoy Poppleton as a character? Yes. Definitely. Poppleton and friends are just fun to spend time with. I enjoy Cynthia Rylant as a writer; she creates memorable characters and series.
Poppleton falls asleep in the sun and gets a bit extra pink. He then rents a jeep for a picnic day and it goes to his head a little bit. And then Poppleton feeds his houseplants with rain water and wonders what it would do to him.
A humorous collection of summer stories. The jeep story sounds like it might have been inspired by a true story from someone Cynthia Rylant knew. It's very believable.
so super cute. i read this through my local library leaning program using the "ebrowser" kind of platform, normally i would use the kindle FIRE version but not this time ...what fun illustrations. great read. i had to laugh at a pig using a umbrella i would figure they would enjoy the rain? right??! cute. would be great coloring book ... you could color all the characters and their surroundings. i see they teach you at the end to draw the characters. cool!!
An early reader. Works as an early reader. Poppleton the pig gets sunburned, rents a jeep, and gets rained on. I always like Mark Teague's art. I'm confused why sometimes Poppleton is wearing a shirt and no pants and sometimes pants and no shirt.
Poppleton is just an overall pleasant pig, mistakes and all. Join him on his summer fun of turning pink in the sun, driving his jeep, and enjoying the rain.
