Broken Heart #3

Beyond Repair

Rate this book
Everybody loves Katie; with her bubbly personality, her beauty, her never-ending supply of care and support for her patients and friends, and her huge sense of fun, there’s very little to dislike. Yes, she’s a bit scatty, she tends not to sweat the small stuff (like an engine light on her dashboard – that is until her Mini won’t actually start any more), and she can talk the hind legs off a donkey, but none of that stops most people from thinking she’s pretty damn adorable.
Well, most people, other than Sam, that is.

Sam is anything but bubbly. His surly demeanour is the complete opposite of Katie's, and over the six years that she’s known him one thing has become very clear: Sam cannot stand her. The fact that he makes her nervous doesn’t help the situation. Around Sam her verbal diarrhoea seems ten times worse, the snort that she tries to hold in when she laughs refuses to be suppressed, and her clumsiness assumes clown-like proportions.

If only he weren’t quite so intimidating, she might be able to act like a normal human being, but his sheer masculine beauty is enough to throw her off before she’s even spoken to him. Then there’s the fact that he looks at her like she’s something he’s scraped off his shoe. The combination is enough to short-circuit her brain.

Katie may be bubbly and bright but unfortunately her past is not, and it’s started leaking into her present. She hides her fear from her friends as they have problems of their own, but when Sam finds out the potential danger she’s in, for some reason he is furious.

Then again, there’s a reason Sam is the way he is. He has his own demons to contend with. Shutting himself off and burying his pain has been working well for him over the last six years since leaving the Special Forces, so the last thing he wants is to spend any time with the one woman that cuts through the numbness he surrounds himself with and actually makes him feel again. But he simply can’t stand by if Katie is in danger; he can’t allow her to be hurt. Unfortunately there are other ways to be hurt, and by getting closer to Katie, Sam may inflict more damage than her past ever could.

Because Sam is damaged, and some things are beyond repair.

This is a full-length contemporary romance / romantic comedy with its own HEA and no cliffhanger.

Warning – Beyond Repair differs from Susie’s other books in that there is some violence within the story. If this, combined with some swearing at times, is not for you, then it may not be your cup of tea.

Okay, finished it.

Gotta say, not a fan of the tortured hero. Never a fan of it, but especially when he hurts, humiliates and shames the heroine. Yes, he loves her, but will she be happy?

What made the story is the introduction of the ice cold, Russian spy/assasinator and her killer dog Salem as she watches over huggy Kate. Serious shades of

The only thing better is Goodie's appreciation of the spy-in-training savant Benjie from Sticks and Stones. Honestly, Susie Tate could do a comic book run with Goodie and Benji and their antics.

First reviewUgh, DNFing a Susie Tate! This did not have the usual quirky feel, but had too much push from the H because he doesn't want to hurt the h and then hurts her anyway. Had a YA angst feel to it.

She gets her own book...Goodnight

My Thoughts - Story
Hmmm…my thoughts?

Well, there are a limited number of overseas books that I really enjoy and this was definitely one of them. I thought the language barrier made this book and I found it adorable.  Just as I found Katie. She was so freaking cute and made this book a winner. I loved trying to figure out what the Welsh slang meant and how everything was solved with a cup of tea!

A book like this was fast paced and the author did a great job with the characters – especially her development of Sam. From the grumpy, pompous ass that he was in the beginning to the over protective, pompous ass he was toward the end – there were so many times I wanted to smack him upside his head.

Enjoyable story from beginning to end with tons of flip flopping from Sam’s part to our comedic poster gay guy…Russell!

There was only one thing that I had a little problem with and that was the sudden switch of Sam – I think I would have liked that drawn out a bit more – especially with more of the snippy banter between Katie and Sam.

Re-Cap
Katie has always had a crush on Sam (her best friend’s husband’s best friend) but he won’t give her the time of day and even lowers himself to complain constantly about her to his friend. Until something happens to Katie that suddenly has Sam showing an over-protective streak. Between Katie’s ex-boyfriend (drug/sex dealer) stalking her to the point of it being illegal and Sam trying to get past what happened in his past – Katie seems to be the only one who can bring an ounce of happiness and sunshine to everyone.

As Katie helps Sam learn to live again, their relationship grows and secrets are shared, but are they both strong enough to make it?

So the writing was as strong as the first book I read by this author, but I had some problems with the story itself this time. Mostly around the behaviors of the leads. Sam decided like half a dozen times that he needed to stay away from Katie and it was just...exhausting. Once? Fine. Twice? He better do a lot of groveling (he didn't). There should not be a third or fourth. But there was and Katie didn't even make him work for it.

Now when you get to the end and find out that Sam has had PTSD this entire time its more forgivable/understandable, but now I'm wondering why Katie (a doctor) didn't figure this out a lot sooner.

There's also a whole plot around Katie having a stalker ex-boyfriend that I also wasn't enamored with. What I liked about the other book by this author was that it was more simple, everyday-type dramas. The ex-boyfriend who runs a drug and prostitution ring and then tries to kidnap Katie took it into the realm of the less realistic a bit.

I still mostly enjoyed it though and it was well written.

Jesus, I fell in love with you the first time I met you

The women I’ve been with in the last six years all have. They’ve all been … well, a bit cold, a bit superficial, a bit vain, and most importantly … not you.’

Why ST wrote the first quote? I don’t believe love declarations when H was shagging side pieces all along!

Dear Katie, heroine of this novel: so... you're dating an older, devastatingly handsome guy with serious control issues, a very violent background, and that oh-so-exciting whiff of danger. When he gets overwhelmed by his feelings, he turns them into anger and directs it at you, calling you stupid and blaming you for being stalked; before you were dating he called you names to your mutual friends and reacted with explosive anger at the idea of spending time with you. He doesn't like your showing affection to platonic male friends and occasionally threatens them with violence. He spends a lot of money on you without giving you the option to accept or reject his gifts (he lies and tells you they are from other people).

Question: does this describe the hero of the book or your lone previous boyfriend, the nightclub owner who is now stalking you? Answer: both (well, the nightclub owner doesn't lie about the provenance of gifts, he just leaves them on your porch).

It's a shame, because there's a lot that's nice about this book. It's a very sweet romance featuring a burly man's man who Is Not Okay With Feelings falling helplessly for a teeny tiny doctor who babbles endlessly and is beloved by all. They have a lively friend group, the characterizations are good, and there are endless scenes of the hero Taking Care Of The Heroine Somewhat Against His Will But He Loves Her So Much He Can't Not. There's a good sense of place and the heroine's day-to-day feels realistic.

But all of that is really destroyed by the hero, who is awful, and not just to the heroine. At the beginning of the book the hero is dating a gorgeous, not-very-nice movie star, who he brings to a friend group party, and everyone is absolutely poisonous to her; the hero later talks about how terrible she is, also, but basically she offered him sex so he didn't mind banging her and He Is A Man *shrug*, which is gross. When his feelings for the heroine become overwhelming (and after they've slept together), he goes back to banging the movie star and then abruptly ghosts her, because he's just that much of a jerk. He's such a terrible guy, and so much of it is in ways that feel dangerous and concerning, that this doesn't feel like a romance I can root for.

I really enjoyed this, but Sam really is a sulky brat for most of the book. I wish he had redeemed himself with more words.

I LOVED the first two books of this series. I thought they were brilliant. This book sucks ass.

From a complete turnaround in the second book, where the heroine actually had a backbone, this heroine was basically a slug. She took all of his shit and happily came back for more. AND IT MADE ME SO FUCKING MAD. What kind of woman happily pines for a man for 6 YEARS, watching him screw around with models and actresses and still he can do no wrong. HE LITERALLY LEFT HER AND *ATTEMPTED* BUT ACTUALLY DID FUCK ANOTHER WOMAN and she STILL was all oh, hes so great, lalalalalala. I cant even.

This book was insane and I get that there are obviously many different personality types out there but she had zero respect for herself and I truly dont understand how Susie Tate can write women like that.

If I could, this book, would have a - star rating, to stop women reading this and perpetuating that its okay for people to treat you like shit over and over but its okay coz he has issues.

I have to say, that in this author's book, like in each of her stories (and I have read them several), the heroine sounds meek and weak (even if she's not, not really, but we don't see that until the end, which is so exasperating) and the H is always bordering asshole and a jerk in a bad way, not sexy at all...and yeah, you have wait for the end to see that he's nothing like that at all...it was all a defense of a sort...I mean, ok, you need to build this world of angst and anticipation BUT during that process, I end up disliking them and wanting nothing else but for them to either go their on way or for this book to end...
And that's really not the point for reading a book, now is it?
so, I figured, what the actual fuck?! Why do I keep reading these?

I want to start off by saying I love Susie Tate’s books. She always has such great stories to write about. 🩷 This book however, did not give.

Now my honest opinion: I HATE THIS BOOK TO IT’S CORE! WHY? YOU MIGHT ASK? WELL LET ME TELL YOU..

SAM:
He was a toxic character. I mean I love a good grumpy man, but this was taking it too far. Him calling her all sorts of names in front of her, her friends, and behind her back. That to me is not okay! 😡 You would think maybe he would grovel at the end but NOPE! All he said was “I’m sorry” and then did it again. He was a horrible character, he even became stalkerish. 🤬 He would tell her what to do, controlling her to the max. Now tell me how I’d try and love anything about this character? 🤯 Also I understand that he went through some sort of trauma, the PTSD, but what did he actually go through? because i definitely didn’t read shit on it.

KATIE:
Oh sweet, sweet, Katie. I did love a lot of parts to her. She was a sunshine, always there for others when in reality not a lot of people were there for her, and if they were it seemed like they were just using her. 💔 She went through a lot at such a young age but, she became something of herself and that says a lot. Now all that being said, she was such an insecure character that I just wanted to get in that book and BITCH SLAP THE SHIT OUT OF HER, tell her to wake the F up!!! She needed to have a stronger back bone and not let others play with her emotions. Especially Sam for crying out loud, he would hurt her and her thoughts were “it’s okay” “he didn’t really mean it” “I could tell from his eyes he cares” like wtf Katie?!? 😡

SIDE CHARACTERS:
Now I haven’t read the other books to know much about the friends but what I could tell you they weren’t good people to Katie. 💔 Her being pushed over and hurt from Sam and all you have are these A holes telling her “don’t give up on him” “go after him” and allowing her to be controlled by him all to say “because he cares for you Katie” what in the actual fuck was I reading? 😤😫😡

Overall thoughts:

Sorry Susie but this book was just not for me. I will still continue to read your books, because a lot of them are beautiful. This!? However, was not for me. 🫡👎🏻

I'm a sucker for a "broody" hero but this book almost took it too far. He went above and beyond to be hurtful to the heroine just so he could avoid her. He continually mentioned how he "wasn’t good enough for her". I can handle this book trait to an extent, but at times I did find it highly frustrating. The push and pull was ongoing. I did like things once he got his act together. The heroine was adorable and I really liked her character. I'm definitely going to read the next book in this series because I found "Goodies" character highly intriguing. Glad this was offered as a kindleunlimited.

Susie Tate delivers another funny, yet lightly angsty contemporary romance with a hint of suspense! While I love Susie Tate’s writing style and her way of telling a story, this isn’t one of my favourites by her. Sam is a little too contrary for me–he’s very back and forth with his emotions. Grumpy/sunshine is one of my favourite tropes, and Katie is so delightfully sweet and funny and a wonderful heroine. Sam, on the other hand, is grumpy, which I loved–at first. He doesn’t let go of his demons early enough in the book for my liking, and he’s very hot and cold with Katie. At times, I felt like he was too toxic for her, and that she should move on, which is not a good feeling to be having when reading a rom com.
That said, I loved the plot of the book and getting to know Goodie. I can’t wait for her book!

** Received a free copy from the author for an honest review **

This is the third book I've read of Susie Tate's and like the other two, I have given it a BIG FAT 5 STARS.

What I love most about this book and the others Broken Heart Syndrome and Sticks and Stones, is the interaction and dialogue between the characters. It's full of banter and Welsh-isms which are just hilarious.
The main characters in this story, Katie and Sam, both come with difficult back stories, but it has been written in such a way that it supports why the characters behave and feel the way that they do and is not just used as a plot device to add shock and melodrama (a pet peeve of mine).

The story is told through the third person perspective and without giving too much away, almost follows a Pride and Prejudice theme, which is always a winner for me.
The supporting character, some of which we have met before in previous books, are great and really add to the story. My favourite character in the whole book though would have to be Goodie. I really do hope she gets a story of her own.

Thanks to the author for responding to a request from me for this book and thanks to AlexaG for recommending it to me.

This is the second book I've read by this author and it won't be the last. I like the characters, the story, the interactions between the MCs (Katie and Sam), all the characters in this series, and the Welshisms (I want to use twp in a sentence if I was sure about how to pronounce it.)

I was a little worried that this one would not be as good as Broken Heart Syndrome - I rated BHS a solid 4 star for me.) I sometimes have problems with the descriptions of characters and they can turn me off but this was not done repeatedly or in a way that took me out of the scenes or story. Katie is just what the doctor ordered for Sam and for Goodie as well.

Another solid 4-star read for me. I'm off to read Sticks and Stones and I am looking forward to Goodie's story. Looks like this author may become an auto-buy for me. I think she changed my book slump juju.

Wow, this was good - enemies (kinda) to lovers, jerky hero redeemed... great read... just a lack of heat :(

Title: Beyond Repair
Author: Susie Tate
Series: Broken Repair
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Plot Summary:

Bright, vivacious, and quirky Katie isn’t used to people just flat out not liking her - maybe they think she talks to much or she needs more fashion sense - but she is kind and loving to everyone she meets, so it balances out. Except with Sam, her best friend’s husband’s business partner. For six years the man has avoided her when possible, and suffered her presence when absolutely necessary. Until he drives her home from a party one night and finds a threatening note on her door. Suddenly, the same Same who barely tolerated her is attached to her at the hip, concerned with her safety. Katie is sure it’s for their friends’ sake, but the looks and occasional touches from Sam might mean more.

Sam’s rough childhood and traumatic tour in the Special Forces has left him emotionally closed off - to say the least. The minute he meets Katie, he knows she might be the one that could heal him, but he’ll never tell her. He won’t risk bogging her down in his issues, she deserves so much better. But he can provide protection when it appears an abusive ex is stalking her - that is within his realm. Too bad he can’t do it from afar, where he isn’t constantly tempted to reach out for her and break the wall he himself put between them.

Comments

First and foremost: this is a slow-burn… with no descriptive sex. Had I known that, I wouldn’t have picked this up. Reader beware. Onto the rest.

So this book came up as a freebie at one point, and I have been totally into the haters-to-lovers thing for a while now - blaming Mariana Zapata. I definitely got that here. Sam is a JERK. Mind you, he has reason to be. And it wasn’t an immediate jerk-thaw, he worked at it, and groveling was involved.

There was quite a bit of humor - I enjoyed the secondary character banter quite a bit.

This is part of a series, but I read it as a standalone, and with the exception of wanting to immediately read Goodie’s story, it worked fine that way.
Oh, and it Welsh, with all the slang, but there are some helpful translations at the end of the chapters.

Favorite Quote:
‘Tell me you haven’t been driving this car with the engine light on.’ ‘In my defence, the car has been absolutely fine and these lights are supposed to be warning lights. Everyone knows you don’t have to mindlessly obey the warning lights. You’ve got like … um …’ Katie closed her eyes, trying to work out how long she had been driving with that light flashing. (If she was honest, she couldn’t really remember a time when it wasn’t.) ‘… well, I don’t know how long … but if the car is about to conk out then there should at least be some sort of really aggressive warning light: you know, like the whole dashboard lighting up and the horn going or something.’

1/24/18 just finished reading first 2 books in series and I am unsure why I thought they didn’t grovel enough. I still loved both of them, yes there could have been a little more grovel from Dylan I think but it was sufficient as is. That being said I think I’ll skip reading this one again and give Goodie’s book a try.

Not my favorite

This is definitely not my favorite book by this author. I think the hero was a major arse and was forgiven way too easy way too often. I prob won't read Goodie's book, if I remember correctly the previous books had little grovel from heroes. so i don't want to take my chances on the next one.

3.5* Susie Tate writes a mean book, there is something about her writing that just connects with me. Her humour is spot on and in this 3rd book of the series we have a continuation of the unrequited theme with the mean mean hero. In this case I felt Kate was too forgiving time and time again. Sam really tore into her a time a two and it would have been healthier to have him working through his issues and coming to her. But hey what do I know about constructing endings. So this lost a star for that and another half for the tangent into action land. It didn't quite fit the tone of the rest of the book.

I was really into this book when I first started reading it, and about halfway through I took a break for a few days (and for me I have to read whatever book i’m reading every day or I have a tough time getting back into it) So I don’t know if it was that or if it was just that the second half just wasn’t doing it for me. After Sam and Katie started dating, I started to find Sam’s overbearing behavior annoying and….toxic. It might’ve been different if Katie stood up to him a little but she just let him talk to her that way and forgave him too easily. I liked how overprotective he was in the beginning but later on there’s a chapter where they’re having a group dinner and he basically called her stupid for walking there in the dark and how it pissed him off because of all the effort he puts into keeping her safe and yada yada yada and how he paid for the security system and what a waste. I know he supposedly was just saying all that in the heat of the moment, and it’s all coming from a good place but still I was turned off of him after that. So anyway it’s a shame because 30% into the book I was sure I was going to end up rating it 4 stars.

This is the second book l read from the author. In my opinion she is a good writer, I like her vivid characters and the communication between them. The story is full of friends meeting and banter which helps to smile while reading.

Even though hero was little bit indecisive and stubborn, l still like the book, again due to author's writing talent. Also l really, really love to read unrequited love with a slow-burn development. :)

I am planning to read all the books of the author. I am sure she'll be better most of popular CR authors' that are not good enough with their story development and narration.

Not sure

4 stars

This book was good. It wasn't over the top exciting. It has the drama that we all seek in our reads but also something more, this author took on a task that brings light into ptsd without really going on about it till the final chapters and even then it wasn't full blown which surprised me. When touching on a subject such as ptsd I really did expect more knowledge but then again maybe it was just the right amount for this book.
Sam is hot lol

This story had me hooked from the beginning to the end and I've only just managed to put it down as I've just finished reading it, I liked both the H and h Sam and Katie and I liked the different storylines about each others pasts, Katie made me laugh as I could just see her riding her scooter and I enjoyed the banter between her and her gay bff Russell and the antics with Sarah's kids but I did feel for her at the beginning and I could feel her humiliation which made me dislike Sam just a little but I wasn't going to judge him yet as the story had just started and I knew there was more to him.
I liked how Sam became protective over Katie because of the threatening letters and how he had liked her all along despite basically proving to her again and again that he disliked her from the very first moment they met which was six years ago, I liked reading about Goodie and I'm looking forward to reading her story, I liked the background setting as unlike the last two books the story wasn't set in a hospital and she seemed to work more in the community.
I liked that the book wasn't full of darkness seeing as both Katie and Sam have had a dark past, I liked the chemistry between them and I was on the edge of my seat when Katie's past came out and how Katie had to confront her evil ex, I liked Sam and I liked that despite him having PTSD and constantly going all hot and cold on katie he was always there for her despite him going away for a while and then to be seen on the front page of a magazine with the actress he was dating in the beginning but I liked how he explained how he got to be on the magazine and how it was all innocent.
I liked how Katie was bubbly and was most of the time in her little world because she contrasted to Sam's darkness also I enjoyed how the story went on you got to meet more of the characters from the last two books and also Sam's parents and sister which was refreshing, I liked seeing Sam go all posessive over katie and I was pleased that the drama over her evil ex didn't drag on and how his part had ended satisfying, I did agree with Sam though when he had a bit of a breakdown and began to tell Katie that she was clueless as to not see what her boyfriend was up to all them years ago though.
I liked that there wasn't much drama with Lydia who he dated at the beginning and I really enjoyed the ending especially the epilogue.

This is the story of Katie, Sarah's best friend. Sarah's husband Rob is in partnership with Sam, they were in the army together and now run some kind of security service. Katie finds Sam very attractive but he has always looked at her with distain. Certainly, being vertically challenged with curly hair makes her very different from the models and C-list actresses he normally dates.

The book opens with Katie babysitting for Sarah's boys and making snow angels - although she is trying to achieve an alien 'snow circle' kind of effect. Sam turns up for the dinner party later that evening with a date in tow - thwarting Sarah and Rob's attempts to match the two of them up.

Katie's ex is seriously bad news and has been leaving highly disturbing letters and presents for her. When she gets drunk and tries to leave the dinner party (on her pink foot scooter) Sam won't hear of her going alone, even though she points out that it is very close, very safe and she has done it plenty of times before. Sam overrules her protests and drives her home where she finds yet another letter. Intrigued when Katie rips up the letter and throws it in the dustbin unread, Sam fishes it out and reads. Which of course leads to Sam using the security business to improve Katie's security and acting as her bodyguard.

All of that sounds fairly run of the mill. mundane, standard romance fare. Being set in Wales obviously makes a change but what I liked were the characters. The patients that Katie visits (all of whom love Sam - in fact he may have been responsible for a substantial increase in the number of home call requests from old ladies), her partners at the doctor's practice are all great.

As soon as Sam and Katie become close however he pulls away and is next seen at a TV event with his Hollyoaks starlet (for those who aren't British, Hollyoaks is a soap primarily centred on teenagers/people in their early twenties who are perpetually sleeping with psychopaths or their girlfriend's mother).

There's suspense as Katie's ex re-appears and laughter - I'd classify it as a British romance with a bit of suspense.

On to the next one. Isn't there one for Sarah and Rob?

I received copy of this book from the author but I wasn't asked to write a review, just to let her know if I liked it.

This is another thing why I absolutely ADORE Susie Tate.

The main reason though is her incredible talent for telling stories that grip your heart, that let your imagination roam and give you lots and lots of laughs.

'Beyond repair' is a third book by the author.
So, we keep the medical theme(Susie herself is a doctor IRL lol), like in the previous two, but we slightly change scenery from the hospital in the city, to private practice in a small town; where everyone knows each other and it's very hard to hide anything.
Katie, for years had been secretly pinning after Sam, but she was sure she never stood any chance with him.
He HATES her, it's simple as that.
He's dark and handsome, he doesn't talk much and he gives away a massive asshole vibe.
So why would a good and lovely person like Katie, be even worried what he thinks of her?
There is something in him that she sees and she's hoping that she can find a way to save his troubled soul.

I loved every page and every chapter.
Everything just felt right when reading.
I wouldn't change a bit in the story or in the ending.
Susie Tate is on her way to becoming a great author and gaining great popularity.

I definitely recommend the read and give it heartwarming 5*

After reading 'Broken Heart syndrome' I started looking for other Susie Tate books. And yes: Beyond Repair was just out.

A new favorite for sure, this book tells the story of bubbly Katie, small in stature but very warm and likeable. For the last 6 years she has been attracted to Sam, but he has made it very clear he has nothing but dislike for her. The secondary characters are from the earlier Susie Tate books 'Broken Heart Syndrome' and 'Sticks and Stones'. Katie has a stalker and once Sam discovers this everything changes between them. But Sam has a past and is broken. Do Katie and Sam have a future together?

There is no smut in this book but I loved the interactions between Katie and Sam and how protective this broken man was towards her. And he was totally right when he was angry and told Katie she had no regards to her own safety. That was the only gripe I had with this book - that Katie was a bit too trusting sometimes.

Lots of humor and funny moments and a great epilogue. Loved it!
