The Veil Diaries #7

When The Dead Have It Easy

Rate this book
***Disclaimer:*** The Veil Diaries is turning into New Adult from this book on. Which means I recommend the 18+ age group. Adult situations, graphic descriptions, and foul language will be in the books.

My name is Alexis, Lexie to most everyone. And I’m a Necromancer. It’s not as much fun as it sounds but that’s not the problem this time. I haven’t seen anyone but Miles in the last month since New Orleans. Talking on the phone? Yeah. Well, except for Zeke. A few text messages was all I’ve gotten. Until now.
We’re going on the guys’ yearly climbing and camping trip. With all of our secrets out, the tension between everyone is high. Everyone is pissed at each other and I’m just trying to keep my head above water.
But it’s time for a decision. Who am I going to be with? Will I end up with anyone? Will our family stay together?

B.L.Brunnemer has been a devoted reader since she was young. As a child, she was instantly attracted to horror stories. The plot, the suspense, the action. She loved it all. Which, as she grew, branched out into several other genres. But a strong female character always caught her eye. Through the years romance became a big part of her reading. Then she found the Young Adult/New Adult genre. But she had a problem. She never found the romance between most characters to be realistic enough for her. At least in the paranormal romance section.

So, she decided to fix that. She'd been writing for years already and had always struggled to finish a manuscript. Until, she decided to write what she wanted to read.

B.L. Brunnemer doesn't have any other publications at this time. She's just a woman, who loves a good story with great characters. And she hopes you'll love them too.

How does it feel when you build yourself up to a book coming out, fangirl over it, then finish that book in one day?

Like it was the best day of your life?

Like you're completely lost and now don't know what to do?

Like coming up for air after being in a Veil Diaries bubble and remembering these people don’t actually exist even though it feels like they do?

This

Or this?

I'd say in this case you are allowed to feel both
I've done a complete 180 on this series, I almost gave up. Well thank goodness for GR friends who bully you into things because I would have been missing out. I'd also like to point out this is the first 5 stars I've given this series...so that says alot.

NOLA was good in book 6, this was better. I love these settings where they have to be together as a group the whole time. A group trip camping is the perfect set up for relationship drama. Campfires, Truth or dare, rock climbing its all gold. Very little on the nerco front but that was OK because this was all about the guys. Huge steps were taken forward.Huge and not in the way we all thought.
My gif prediction ....

may not have been totally prophetic, but it did go a little further than YA as promised.
Didn't matter. BL delivered, boy did she deliver.

It did take 7 books for this to get going but I find I can't be angry now because I feel so engrossed in this world, the build up has been immense and I know these characters now. I feel like I know them personally and its making the excitement very real. I know it’s paranormal but it’s the most contemporary feeling paranormal I’ve ever read, like this is real life and that partly to do with the build up and partly BL’s writing style that covers ever detail of their day.
I'm so glad I had the cake eaters at the RHR to Buddy Read this with, it wouldn't have been the same without you!

So now the big question..

there's only one thing we can do...

God this hurts my heart to admit, but this wasn't my favorite book in this series. I feel kind of let down by it to be honest. There was so much build up and anticipation to this book, and then it didn't really feel like much happened. There were a few parts that I enjoyed very much, and can't wait to get answers on, but I'm just hoping that since we made progress with the dynamics revolving around the relationships in this book, that we'll get more of a story line about the supernatural aspect. I think what bothered me most about this book was that it felt like a contemporary novel with just a side of paranormal. Not that's anything wrong with that, but with the previous books, there was so much going on, and BL introduced us to all these different supernaturals, and then barely got anything out of this book. If this book had been shorter, I would've said it'd make for a good novella that bridges the main story. Idk, I guess I'm just really wanting more answers that we haven't gotten from the last two books. I still very much adore all the characters in this series, and I really hope we see their bonds grow and strengthen. Suffice to say, I will be back to read the next one. I really want those answers! And I'm very much anticipating how this story goes from here.

Like a fine wine, it just keeps getting better.

So many new developments, in their relationships, the story, the characters. Everything just keeps getting better. New developments in the story get thrown in with all of them trying to figure out their relationship, which makes for a great installment to this story. I just can’t wait for the next one!!

Book 7 finds them heading away for a camping trip in order to figure out their relationship after the New Orleans trip. There is quite a bit of angst since this is a tough situation, but it just makes it very realistic. Not everyone is in agreement about a poly relationship and most of them resist the idea. Plus their encounters with how some people will react are very realistic. This is part of what makes this series so great, because despite it being paranormal it has such a huge dose of realism.

******* Spoiler Alert *********

Okay (sigh) ... Well, I'm a little disappointed in this book...

The author uses her written words on crap I wasn't interested in... let me give you a few examples of the crap that could have been left out of this book.

1. Instructions on water ski's... why did I need to know the basics?

2. Rock climbing... "unlocks, belay, nuts, hooks, and finger holes"... why did I need the instruction manual for this?

3. The tents and shower instructions.. why?

4. And don't even get me started on the unexplained distillery they found in the woods.
Why even bring that into the story if we weren't going to get some type of explanation?

And finally, we get somewhere with the whole poly relationship thingy.. sheesh, about damn time! I mean it took only 7 books to get there! (dripping with sarcasm, eye roll)!

I'm just a little frustrated with this author and this story progression. Is she writing this series this slowly so that she can sell more books using the same characters that her
readers have fallen in love with for more money? ... damnit I say find and write a new story and give me my HEA already...

Okay, enough of that! Getting off my soapbox... I just have too many other complaints about this book...

Please don't get me wrong I love this series but I'm just tired of the slow progression of this story already...

I’ve got mixed feelings.
I’m a big big big fan of this series.

But I don’t feel like there is development in the book, and it was very repetitive: let’s talk/ let’s be stuborn asses/ lexi leaves to take a walk.

It wasn’t necessary to describe TWO climbings in such detail: it doesn’t give substance to the storyline and it bored me to tears. And the fishing trip. It didn’t add to the story.

The plot needed more detail about every important thing that happened: the trial, ethan’s situation, asher’s, the relationship, the intruder in the Veil, etc.

Personally, I needed more. Book 6 was amazing, thrillin’ .... and this book was a little... meh.

I'm not sure how to rate this. Maybe 3.5. I've always sort of had a bit of a love/hate thing going on with this series and whole I liked osme of the developments, this books was soooo slow and pretty boring.

The blurb should pretty much have read "they all go camping and in between some pretty dull descriptions of rock climbing, water skiing and swimming (oh and lots of cooking, showering and hoodie wearing) they CONTINUE to do nothing but TALK AND TALK AND TALK about their relationship."

Yes, we finally got somewhere from the end. Yes, there was some very mild action. Yes, there are some interesting things happening to the guys, but it is so vastly overshadowed by ending talking about the same thing and going in circles that I just wanted to throw something.

On one level it is quite cool that the wrhtwr is seriously trying to show the build up and logistics if a genuine poly relationship between what are essentially teenagers. But if I wanted to read endless talk about how it was all going to work I'd read a biography of people in those sorts if relationships or something, not a bloody work of fiction that should be getting somewhere faster without all this heel dragging.

Maybe I should just bow out of this series. I had a brief 4 star glimmer at book 5, but the last one and this have frustrated more than pleased.

I just can't help but feel that, no matter the vast potential the world building for this series has, or the developments with tlqhats happening to the guys, that element of the story will always be 30 to 10 percent of what the story revolves around. At the pace the relationship moves and all of their issues with being with Lexie as a group, I can just imagine the angst and the tension and the TALKING that is going to involve. I'm not sure I find the characets endearing enough anymore to make it worth my while...

Disappointed and underwhelming...filler book

Well I gatta say I'm a bit disappointed...the whole book was just a drawn out are we/ aren't we going to date Lexi...I get that it needed to be addressed because this is a reverse harem series. It's obvious that this book is a filler to lead up to the next book, The reason I state this is that a lot of information was thrown into this book. Clay's trial and sentencing happened in less than one chapter. Learning Asher was a werewolf, learning Ethan wasn't human, learning Isaac isn't probably human either anymore as well... I could have skipped the whole book up until the last 2 chapters and got the gist of the book...I loved the first 4 books but since then I gatta say I think I'm a bit over this series..

The truth about Lexie liking everyone came out in book 6, now the guys have had a month to think over what it means to them and it's time to decide what to do. They all pack up and go on a week-long camping trip to talk and work out their relationships.

I am tempted to say that not a whole lot happens in this plot, but that's not exactly true. I actually found it refreshing that the characters set aside what they had going on and took a week to figure out their relationship issues. Sure the author gave us a couple of juicy tidbits there at the end to satisfy our interest in the paranormal fantasy plot, but essentially the majority of these pages were about the characters rehashing topics, getting jealous and/or angsty, going back & forth on their decisions, and arguing about what to do - so basically a realistic view of how a bunch of teenagers might approach getting into a reverse harem type relationship. Now that it is DONE, maybe now they can get back to focusing on the paranormal fantasy stuff, like the veil and how to fix it.

Hhoooooiii boooooyyyyy. Shit. Where do I even begin?

Okay, first things first. I have been a fan of this series since the beginning. While some might see my 3 to 4 star ratings (on previous books in the series) as "not so fannish", I must beg to differ. I'm one of "those" reviewers that rarely gives out a 5 star rating. I don't know why I'm like this, so please don't ask, but if I give a 3 or 4 star rating, then it means that I liked or really liked the book. 4 stars means I thought it was pretty damn great, so if a series starts at 3 stars and graduates to a 4 as the series continues...you can pretty much surmise that I'm a fan. I normally won't bother with a series after a book or two anyways if I don't like where it's going; soooooo, the fact that I'm 7 books into this series speaks volumes.

Now, before I get into why this book went back down to a 3 star rating for me (aside from the fact that after reading it I know the commands "On belay", "Belay on", "Climbing", and "Climb"), I want to talk about the things that I actually really enjoyed first.

If you are still reading this review, then I need to go ahead and point out that there will be slight spoilers ahead. My whole review will not contain any major spoilers--being as why I am not tagging the whole thing as a spoiler--but, there will be a few minor ones. SOOOOOOO...if you don't want to read any kind of spoiler, you need to stop reading now! You have been sufficiently warned at this point.

Let's continue.

What did I really like about this book? First, I really enjoyed Brunnemer's approach to the whole "reverse harem" situation. In the majority of RH reads that I come across, the men in the "harem" or group, just seem to naturally accept it. That's weird to me. I mean, I don't think that most men (or women) are just naturally okay and accepting of a situation that plonks them right in the midst of a multi-person relationship. Hell....I know that if a guy I was into asked me to be one of his many girlfriends, I would probably drop-kick him in the balls and key his car on my way out. Therefore, a more realistic approach to this type of situation was actually quite refreshing.

I liked that the guys were actually struggling with this decision. I loved that they had some conversations about it and not everyone was on board with the idea.

The other thing that I liked about this book was Brunnemer's warning that from this point forward, the series was transitioning into New Adult. What I actually gathered from that was pretty simple...sex! We will start getting sex...or more than just kissing anyways. For me, that is always something to look forward to.

Now, I need to address what I didn't like and what dropped this down back to a 3 star read for me.

The first (and probably most paramount) was Lexie. Her character annoyed the shit out of me during this book. Her whole "it has to be everyone or it's no one" attitude about the dating situation really rubbed me the wrong way. That kind of attitude is manipulative and a cop-out.

Why? You may ask. Well, because she says over and over again that each guy is enough for her by themselves; that the only reason she can't choose is because she loves them all the same and doesn't want to ruin their friendship. If she really felt that way and cared enough about how each guy felt--and didn't want or need any one over the other--then she would let them make their own decisions. She would do it without holding her stupid fucking ultimatum (I date all of you or none of you) over their heads. She would let the ones who were okay with "sharing her", move into a relationship with her, and she would let the ones who weren't okay with that idea, step back without fucking feeling bad and being ostracized for it. BUUUTTTT NNNOOOOOO! SHE.HAD.TO.FUCKING cry and throw a tantrum every.fucking.time someone hinted at the idea of not being okay with a poly relationship. She fucking huffed around, like a temper-tantrum-throwing infant, until she finally made all the guys mad at each other and feel sooo bad about having their own fucking feelings, that she ultimately got her way and they all just give in to her wishes. It really made me sick to my stomach. For a girl that everyone thinks is so perfect and selfless, her fucking selfish mentality and devious behavior proved to be the antithesis of that perception.

Also, there are sooooo many side stories (holy-shit things) that happen during this book, but we never really get to explore those things...well...because Lexi. Everything cirles back to her and how the guys don't want to upset her, or how she isn't able to deal with something, or how she becomes upset about something, or how....actually, it's all just because Lexi can't fucking deal.

I WANTED to know more about Ethan and what's going on...I WANTED to know more about Danielle and what that was about, I WANTED to know more about Miles' dad and what he was up to. Instead...I was given chapters about Lexi feeling uncomfortable about how people or her guys might view her as a slut, or her hurting herself and Zeke freaking out, or her "just not knowing" what to do in ANY FUCKING TYPE of situation. Seriously! Ugh. It was fucking annoying.

Also...can we say, "FUCKING FLUFFY, FILLER DIAGLOGUE FOR PAGES"????? My gosh! The amount of times I thought, "who tf cares," or "why are you repeating this AGAIN for the 1.5 millionth time?" while reading this, was ridiculous!! I feel confident that I could go rock climbing tomorrow and get that shit correct on my first try after reading this book. If I was reading a "How to rock climb for dummies" book, that would be a FANTASTIC thing to take away from it! HOWEVER, knowing I read a New Adult, Reverse Harem, Paranormal Romance novel? Yeah...not something I cared to know that much about.

I know I'm being harsh and that Brunnemer knows what she is doing with her characters, but I struggled through this one. I really did. I felt like we took several giant steps backwards in the storyline and character development and this "new adult" storyline turned more "young adult" than ever.

Does this mean that I am done with this series? Hell no! I am, like many, impatiently waiting for book 8, but....if it turns out to be more like we got in this one, then I will probably reevaluate whether I want to continue on with the series.

Kinda sad about Louis. Want to know more about Luca. Why does Lexie keep feeling like she's being watched? What was up with that dream of Samuel? Who pulled her off the fire escape and blurred around so fast? What is Ethan? Who was messing up the Veil?

It took me a full week to read this, and I hated it. 😭 I literally took a break to read an entirely different series from start to finish because this was so underwhelming and random.

This book essentially goes: OMG SCARY EMOTIONAL THING! Psych, camping and extremely boring sports shit is what we're doing. How much do you want to know about rock climbing? Cause you'll be a pro after this course. OMG SCARY EMOTIONAL THING! Psych, we're climbing another cliff. Almost got you with that one! You thought it was gonna be an actual book, didn't you? Ha, ha, ha. Told you, this is a rock climbing course. OMG PLOT STUFF! Ha, you really fell for that again, dumbass? Be glad we don't have more cliffs to climb. I AM SAMURI! I rocked that, I'm learning shit so quickly. SQUIRREL! Bye, dude, I know everything now. I'll teach your kid all five minutes of the things you have taught me. Muah, forehead kisses and paper hearts to everyone cause I checked "yes" on that note you slipped me after naptime. Thank you all for all of the sports time. I love sports time. Mmm. Sports time.

This really should have been a novella. They just cried in the damned woods for days on end while playing on homemade obstacle courses, climbing cliffs, swimming, and dojng all of the other Olympic trials. 🙄 The POV's weren't even interesting in this one. It was... not what I expected of this series. I started reading it for the urban fantasy plot, and there wasn't much of that in this book at all. Hell, there wasn't even much romance. There was a lot of rock climbing, though. 🤷‍♂️

I hope that the next one has an actual plot, because this one... was extremely underwhelming. I kinda want to return it so that I can buy a book I might actually like, but since I read all of it, I don't know if I can. :-/

Spoiler Alert: Don't beleive the 18+ stuff. The most play anyone gets is a gentle purple nurple.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how much I adore this series?

Ok so all the feelings were felt in the reading of this one, a few of them more then once. This is probably my favorite so far.

So. Many. Things. Happened! I'm not even sure I can process them all yet. The theories floating around in my head, make me feel like I should have some secret room in the basement, with a wall dedicated to all the evidence in order to track down the truth.

The worst part? The ABSOLUTE WORST PART...I have to wait until July for the next installment 😫.

I mean.... come on of course its 5 stars... this series is so wildly awesome its just a matter of where it takes you. This one was a much needed part of the series I think it was a good transition into the full adult version and what they have to figure out with themselves. Truly this series has risen to the top as my fave book series now I just love it and miss the characters when I'm done reading.

also this was book number 100 that I've read this year woohoo!

This is a good book but come on this is kind of ridiculous, here we are at the end of book 7 and they discussed HAVING A RELATIONSHIP the entire freaking book. Like I get you’re trying to be realistic about people who don’t normally think in a poly relationship but geez. How long do you need to drag it out for??? I am all for slow burn RHs but this? This is beyond slow burn, this is sloth burn romance.

Then we have things showing up from the last book causing situations in this book. And I don’t know if book 8 is the end of the series and it’s complete or not, but to wait until the very last book to have the relationship is crazy to me. I’m feeling like I’ve been strung along for seven SEVEN books!!! That’s my most major issue.

Also they mention Lexie’s birthday but far as I can recall they didn’t really celebrate. One person mentioned her birthday and it was while she was fighting. After that it dropped from the plot line.

We find out some very obvious things that take the crew entirely too long to figure out.

There are still some typos and the book does a lot of mundane things that are seemingly important. I’m not sure why we needed to see them go rock climbing, IDK how it played a role in the plot because it didn’t seem like a big enough scene to make a difference in plot.

Where are these diaries? Far as I can tell we talk about the veil but barely. We talk about being a necromancer but barely...I just dunno.

Onto the next one though and hopefully some answers.

Good…but

This had a lot of talking. In circles. It is very realistic in the type of situation they are entering into, but it was boring to read. A few major developments felt like they were undersold, just so we could hear the same flipping arguments and talks again. In real life, this is totally the most honest and mature way to do what they are doing. In book form, it needs a heavy edit and less repetition.

I also don’t need to know every flipping aspect of their climbing, water skiing, fishing, cooking and what clothes they put on. Way too much info that was just fluff filler.

And the author needs to buy a thesaurus. I swear she is copying and pasting descriptions between books. And the voice/scent thing every freaking time is annoying. (And the nicknames, but I just ignore those.) why does Miles always smell so strongly of wintergreen when he isn’t chewing gum? Why does Zelenskyy small like engine grease and leather when he has showered and in shorts and a tshirt? Issac smells like limes, but one time it was lemons and one time it was oranges. Does he bathe in citrus? Has the author ever smelt men before?

This book documents the struggle the h & H(s) had making the decision to start a polyamorist relationship. That alone makes this book unique. Most RH make the decision seem like a switch that can be turned on or off & moves the story forward with little consideration to the reality of what such a relationship would entail. This book doesn’t make the decision that easy for the H(s).
On a more serious & more reality based note this book also touches on why many woman decide not to report domestic violence &/or sexual abuse.
The book also makes some headway on the missing ghost 👻 & some repercussions to the events in New Orleans are discovered. I rate this book 3 stars.

When the Dead Have it Easy is what I call the transitional stage book, the answers to questions that we needed to move on, & the relationships we needed to see. Wow, the author threw in some twists of her own to give this book an intense & emotional read! I cannot wait for book 8 this summer!

I love this series with all my heart but I felt like the whole book was just about: are we aren't we going to date Lexi and that made me lose a little bit of interest in it.

okay so let me start off by saying I've never written a review but I was just so passionate about this book and even this series that I couldn't keep it to myself, okay so lets start off as to why I rated it 3 stars

First, Im a huge fan of this series. Im seriously hooked line and sinker type of fan, I literally waited for the next book to come out and put out a reminder for the day it came out, but I was slightly disappointed when I read this book. The entire time I was waiting for the the story to pick up and things being addressed since the the last 6 books, but nothing. Literally the entire book consisted of them rock climbing and swinging of ropes into a lake.

Secondly, the reason I gave it three stars is because I feel like the author changed a few of Lexis charms since the past 6 books, she become upset all the time, began taking shit she usually wouldn't from the guys. There was a specific scene were she fought with asher and I just felt as if she forgave him too quicly like the author was trying to speed through the character problems even though the story was on freeze for like the entire book, I felt like the book was on repeat for the first 350 pages.

Mostly it was the same problem each time, they went to have a -family meeting- and it was the same conversation as ever with the same outcome, and I'm sorry don't even get me started on the -her walking out and saying I'm chosing no one if one doesn't agree and she walks out crying- LIKE WTFFF that is not our LEXI, she's a badass and frankly I don't think its fair the boys were given a full go or no go option because if one guy is still on the fence he shouldn't be forced to cave just because it'll hurt the other guys chances.

Also lastly I felt like the whole book could have dug deeper into the guys problems and lexis raising the dead could have been addressed more, and I wish we could have had more scenes were Lexi spends time with Zeek, seeing as in the end what decision he came to, and the whole Ordin situation, JEEEZ did that feel rushed, it was pretty much Lexi just freaking out and hiding, I feel like that should have been more talked about and more action or something should have been taken.

Finally I think the author just over stretched the book in general and I swear only the last 30 pages were good, honestly the story line is like EPIC and I'm madly in love with all the BOYS which is a first because I usually have a favourite by now, I just felt she could have executed the story in this book way better the she did, I don't know if it just felt like lazy writing, at no point did i get exited or shocked or emotional, only one scene got me to feel something and that was over in just a page *sighhhh* hopefully the 3rd one is WAAAAAY more satisfying

ALSOOO AHH THERE decsion in the END!! BUT SERIOUSLY who else was dying during the miles and Lexi hot and heavy scene, i think i literally cried over that.... it was emotional for me LOL

Anyways let me know if you any of you guys thought this way too or I'm just being harsh because at this point I don't know what to feel and am seriously wondering how I'm gonna wait for the next book *crying*

I LOVE THIS SERIES!!!

So, in the last book all the guys find out they all kissed her, and in this book everyone's trying to figure out how that kind of group relationship would work and if they would want it.

I think what makes this series so amazing is that we actually see the girl and main guys struggle, and really talk out if this is the kind of relationship they could all have. This is a paranormal series yes, but it also takes place in the real world. And, in other RH series I never seen the main characters really debate really this kind of the relationship to the level of degree these characters do. And, everyone really loves each other.
So, much other things happen in this book on their group camping trip too.

And, this series would DO AMAZING as a tv show. I hope we don't have to wait like 50 years for it just because people think it's taboo! There is sooo much violence, and violence against women on tv like Handmaidens Tale, that it would be ridiculous for people to reject this based on taboo. its like a fantasy show.

spoilers below for me really so i remember.

It’s an awesome series and this is one of the best books so far. Despite the warnings that it moving to new adult the sex is non existent -a few kisses, I think there’s a bit of heavy petting. That’s it, so don’t get your hopes up! It’s a relief to start getting some more clues to the veil mystery and it feels like we are finally getting close to revealing who messed with it and what they are doing with the ghosts.

The boys characters develop in some quite interesting ways. With only two out of the group seemingly without supernatural powers by the end of this book I have my theories as to what the last two will end up as. I can’t wait till book 8 ❤️

Alright, don't hate me for this review, but I was really disappointed by this book.
Despite some continued editing/proofreading issues, this has been one of my favorite RH series, I have re-read the first 3 or 4 books so many times. I really enjoyed the characters and the world building and the romance (not smut, but actual romantic moments.)

So when the author suddenly announced that the "New Adult" portion of the series would start with this book and not book 12 or 13 (and after plot resolution of the current story arcs, so people could opt out if they chose) as she originally intended, I had some trepidation, but I tried to remain positive. Then came the warning label that this book would be NA and contain coarse language and mature themes, and I became even more concerned. But as I said, favorite series, so I gave it a shot.

Which leads to my disappointment. Now, cursing has its place, but I did a search, and the f-word in its variants is used 290 times. That is more than once per page on average, while s*** is found 121 times. And while there is no sex in this book, the romantic moments were decidedly less romantic and more...salacious? The whole tone of the book was changed and felt coarser and less charming.

Also, as a few other reviewers have mentioned, it felt like there was a lot of filler in this book and less plot development or action. I was actually bored in a few sections, and there wasn't really a "monster of the week" or completed adventure feel as in prior installments.

I will probably try the next book and hope this was just a transitional hiccup. I am not opposed to NA, I just don't enjoy how it was executed in this book.
