Psychological Thriller Dark and Disturbing Choices

Paranormal Uncertainties

At the Edge of No Return, psychological thriller, brings four characters to the edge of falling toward darkness or light.

Has Elvis Colt, a serial killer, rolled the dice too many times; the Reverend William Meeks lost any chance for salvation; Jack Goodman, forever stuck at Horizon’s End; and behavior psychologist Dr. Georgia Jeningson made a fatal decision when trying to right a wrong which she can never take back?

At the Edge of No Return offers more than just another story of murder, vengeance, and love lost. The novel explores what can take all of us to the edge.

2018 Mystery and Mayhem Award Winner, D. J. Adamson wins again with this novel, taking the reader into the darker side of humanity by observing the consequences created by choices. It’s a twisted ride that will keep the reader thinking beyond the book and with the hope Adamson will have a sequel to this novel soon.

“…tension built slowly throughout the story leading to an exciting ending.”

This was confusing at times. The book was well written, however, this particular book utilizing that M. O. didn’t quite work for me. At the end, while some of the threads all connected and tied together, I still felt things were not fully resolved.

I chose to review this book after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions are my own and unbiased. I’ve read several books by this author so I was happy to read At the Edge of No Return.

The story takes place in the small coastal town of Seaward. It begins with Reverend Meeks murdering his wife. At first, he seems evil but is he or is he mentally ill? Dr. Georgia Jeningson would know. She has just moved into town to hide from a serial killer who killed her husband and is looking for her. Her new home is being haunted by Jack, the man who built the house. For some reason, he’s stuck in Seaward and doesn’t like anyone moving into the house.

All of these characters are loosely tied together in an inventive way. There is murder, mystery, and suspense around every corner. Jack also brings a little humor into situations at times. It would have been a little more suspenseful for me if Georgia had done less pondering.

At the Edge of No Return was an enjoyable read and I look forward to reading the next book.

won this book for a review. Loved it! A great story about a ghost who haunts his old home, and the woman in witness protection who currently lives there. He grows fond of her and protects her as best he can in this paranormal mystery. Very well done.

I am very honored to have received a copy of the unedited manuscript from the author.

D.J.Adamson has taken another step forward in her writing career. Previously she has published Book One in her Deviation Trilogy titled "Outre", a YA-Science Fiction work. However she is best known for the three books in her Lillian Dove Series. "Admit to Mayhem, Suppose and the recently published Let Her Go. Lillian Dove is a quirky, recovering alchoholic that owns a liquor store and seems to get into trouble everytime she turns around. Her antics as am amateur private eye seem to get her into more trouble than she can handle much to the chagrin of the local police department.

Now D. J. Adamson has venture into new territory. At the Edge of No Return is more gritty offering from an up and coming writer. Although different from what her fans are used too, D.J. has brought to life a new character that will be the star in the first of an exciting new series.

Dr. Constance Jeningson has recently lost her husband Jay to the hands of a murderer, in part because of her position as a consulting psychologist for the FBI. Special Agent Marker Sargaryian has utilized Dr. Jeningson in order to profile the suspect Ernest Purdy, suspected of being a serial killer, in order to find evidence that will lead to Purdy's conviction. But when Constance gets too involved and asks to be allowed to interview Purdy it put a spotlight on her and a target on her back.

Now finding herself in danger she is placed in an FBI protection program, her name is changed to Georgia Bidwell and she moves from her home in LA to the small seaside community of Seaward.
But all is not what it seems in Seaward as murder abounds even there. And too many people see the killer dump the body into the local jetty. Georgia just happens to be one of them which will further imperil her. And to add to all her other problems there are strange noises coming from her new home: Horizon's End. Jack Goodman used to live in Horizon's End with his wife Ophelia but now they are both deceased, but Jack refuses to go where deceased people go. He's not happy that Georgia is living in his house and tries to get her to move out. Oh yeah, Jay's killer has found out where Constance/Georgia is hiding out. What a mess!!!

D.J. Adamson cranks up the tension in this thriller with a touch of the paranormal. The pace moves smoothly with the shifting points of view of the major players. The action builds as the story develops and grips the reader through the tension filled ending. The writer has populated her book with interesting characters that make the story fun to read and Marlee McCrae is one of the most interesting. D.J. Adamson is a very good writer that paces her stories well and her plot development makes her stories enjoyable to read. She always has an interesting story to tell which pulls the reader into the worlds she creates. Ms. Adamson has set up this book so that she can move forward with Dr. Jeningson into the future with this new series.

D.J. Adamson now has three series she is working on which gives the reader a choice of which one they will choose to read, but I highly recommend the reader choose them all. If you are looking to add a new writer into your rotation I can't recommend D.J. Adamson enough.

At the Edge of No Return
By: D. J. Adamson

This audio book was an interesting listen. The listener gets murder, suspense, witness protection, insanity or not, paranormal, and characters that interact well with each other. The suspense will hold you until the end.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Mike Chadwick's fine voice brought it to life.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I really enjoyed the story but....

The editing and misspells were annoying. If the story hadn’t been so interesting I would have stopped reading. Lots of quotation marks used thinking the character was speaking only to realize they were thinking. It’s was weird.

"What we believe is who we are."
At the Edge of No Return, is a cleverly crafted web of fears and emotions which come together and revive around a house and four characters. After serial killer Elvis Colt had murdered her husband, psychologist Georgia Jenington left witness protection to buy a creepy old house in the small town of Seaward. Rumoured to be haunted, Horizon's End did, indeed, still have a former inhabitant, a ghost jealous of anyone intruding into his property, named Jack, Jack Gordon, though he had scant memory of anything from his past. And, unsuspected by anyone, the Reverend William Meeks, beloved priest of the parish, had just murdered his wife. As the story swirls and explores each character, they are also drawn together in this thrilling psychological exploration of motive and life experiences beyond the usual exploration of murder mysteries.

Even more than for most stories, so much of the impact of this Audiobook is dependent on the narration, and Mike Chadwick does not fail the reader. His deep and p!peasant voice is full of emotional exlression, well articulated and intoned, as well as providing individual and appropriate voicing s for each character. A fine performance.

This is a book which really is hard to put down. It is envolving, thought provoking, visceral, and everything a good thriller should be. My thanks to the rights holder of At The Edge of No Return, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. It was unusual and very much a good read. Recommended.

A Ghostly Assist

A psychologist in witness Protection moves to a haunted house. Angry and heartbroken over the murder of her husband by a serial killer she decides to lure the killer to one final confrontation. Her presence first jars then engages the ghost of the house's long dead owner. In the meantime a childhood of abuse leads a minister to murder and into the web of the serial killer.

This is an effective and engaging novel. The paranormal elements are nicely done. Nothing over the top or silly. The ghost's story is not fully resolved. There are typos that are annoying (moran for moron among others) but not enough to interfere with my enjoyment of the book. Good read.

At the Edge of No Return was a great read by D.J. Adamson. This book is a psychological thriller that brought four characters to the edge of darkness. Elvis Colt is a serial killer. Reverend William Meeks may have no chance at Salvation. Jack Goodman is stuck at Horizon's End. Dr. Georgia Jeningson is a psychologist who made a fatal decision. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

Good story, poor editing

I thought the story was good, but there were so many errors I couldn't enjoy it. If there is a corrected kindle version, or the paperback has been edited like it should be, I'd recommend it. And the author is an editor? How could she let this version get out!

I really enjoyed the storyline, it kept me hooked to the very end. But it's only 3 stars as there were some mistakes - missing or unnecessary " (too many to note), use of capital letters partway through a sentence (usually after a comma), spelling/grammar etc that took from the overall enjoyment of the read.

It isn’t an especially good book. However, it’s not especially bad either. Therefore I selected the exact middle rating. It started out well but it fizzled out quickly.

Rambles

Not a bad story, but there is a lot of rambling by the characters. Often, it becomes difficult to figure out who is talking. There are a lot of grammatical errors.
