The Lessons We Learn

Rate this book
Jayla Anthony had it all.

At least, that's what it looked like from the outside. But from the inside looking out, she knew there was much more to life than her current situation. And when she decides to press the reset button on everything she thought she knew with her newly divorced status, her new occupation, and her move to a brand-new town, she hardly expects that to somehow end up including the young, handsome security guard from her company's building.

Khalid Irving is a man on the come-up now that he's found a steady, good-paying job, a better living situation, and most importantly, a better outlook on life after a few years of no real direction. And now that he feels like he's on the right track, he's ready to pursue the woman who stole his attention the second she stepped into his building, even if that means he has to become her client first.

Jayla knows the risk of mixing business and pleasure. Khalid knows how bad he wants her. And when the two finally get together, the chemistry is electric.

But just because the fire is there, that doesn't mean there won't be a few tough lessons to learn along the way . . .

I did not like The Lessons We Learn as much as I liked The Games We Play. Other than a few funny moments, it was borderline boring. I just wasn't feeling Khalid and Jayla as a couple. Something about their relationship didn't click for me. The Lessons We Learn was a decent love story but, there wasn't anything spectacular about this book.

Book 2 didnt grab me like book 1. I didnt really feel a huge chemistry between Khalid and Jayla. There was definitely some funny moments and cute one liners that I enjoyed.

This. Book. Was. So. Funny! I am still laughing. These characters were full of acerbic wit! For real. The one-liners were right on target, hitting the intended party right in the funny bone. But don't think that The Lessons We Learn wasn't full of lessons because it was. Let's start with Jayla, I really admired her! She was a woman who at almost 30 realized her life belonged to her and she should live it accordingly. Life began at 29.75 for Jayla formerly known as Anderson!

Now on to her man, THE MAN, the one who showed her that they (men) aren't all the same....... Khalid!!! He was everything and he wasn't afraid to want, to be with and tell Jay how he felt about her, but he also understood that too much, too fast would scare her away. He was patient with her, caring and ultimately, she reciprocated his love uninhibited!

We can't forget about Shaq and Mila! These two were the whole damn comedy show in this book. Although I highly doubt it'll happen, I would love to see if anything serious develops with these two.

This was a great addition to the FWB (Friends With Benefits) series! Looking forward to the next one.

A spin off from "The games we play" did not disappoint. This book was hella funny I was cracking up the whole book. Khalid And Jayla was not the average couple but as the story progress they end up being so cute together. The story highlights how oppisites attract, Khalid being the laid back lover and Jayla being the uptight business women and their Journey to love was to cute. Let me tell you this series was like the T.V. show insecure in books it was relatable and definitly for the culture. I cant wait to read more from this author.

It was really fast - some of the storyline felt unfinished or abrupt. But I still liked the story in general.

I started off rooting for Jayla, but quickly realized that she was in deep self-sabotage mode. After the warm and fuzzies I got from Chance and Londyn, I feel like Khalid deserved better and ultimately, Jayla's rebound shouldn't have gone this far.

Jayla gets her groove back

This book was pretty low angst. I prefer high angst.
Jayla was coming off a divorce when she met Khalid. You could imagine that two months isn’t really enjoy time to have processed the baggage from the infidelity that ruined that relationship. So this book was about Jayla learning to move on and not make the next guy pay for her ex-husband Jason’s mistakes.
What I liked about Khalid was that he was very understanding and showed patience with Jayla’s skittish behavior. He gave her room to figure out where she wanted their professional and personal lives to go. He was playful when he needed to be, sexy when the time called for it and backed off she got uncomfortable.

The pace was a bit slow for me but honestly, I don’t think Jayla was ready for a relationship so it needed to be slow for her. The writing was okay and the characters were entertaining. I’m just in the mood for real drama and this was more of a getting your groove back story

*Audible
This book was such a breath of fresh air after reading Freida Mcfadden back to back. I can say that I like Alexandra Warren now that I have read two of her books. I hope that she writes about Jamilah and Shaq next. This was a funny, spicy, well written romance. I loved the characters and felt the story line could be relatable. No toxic love just miscommunication and family drama. It was a good read. I give 3.5/4 stars

cute

Now I like how this story played out. Buuuut I was a little annoyed with Jayla and how she acted like Khalid was sooooo much younger than her. Some of her behavior and comments made it seem like she was in her 40s and he was in his 20s. Not him in mid 20s and her in late 20s. But it was a cute story and fun to watch it play out.

Jayla x Khalid

This was a sweet, funny, feel good read. Filled with great banter and spicy moments. Even though Jayla started stressing me out with her insecurities and overthinking, Khalid’s cool, calm, and collected demeanor always managed to reel her back in

This romance was blah. I thought the heroine Jayla shouldn’t be jumping into a new relationship because she still had unresolved issues from her previous marriage to deal with. The only reason I gave this book a 3* instead of 2* is because of Jamila (Jayla’s sister) and Shaq’s (the hero’s cousin) craziness. These two fun, easygoing and no filter characters were a hoot. Loved them.

I honestly think I liked it even a little bit more than the first. This was a medium heat read with a really cute couple, low angst, and a man who was head over heels for his woman while being completely respectful of her boundaries and desire to take things slowly. In fact, I think this is a great book to pick up if you liked Our Desires by Ivy Laika.

What I appreciated most about Jayla and Khalid was their ability to communicate. As much as I had enjoyed the previous book, Londyn and Chance constantly playing games instead of coming out and saying what they wanted--while not unrealistic to life--always felt like a bit of a more immature love. What Jayla and Khalid have may be less full of lust, but it's no less passionate, and feels more adult. With Jayla's relationship history, she's long past the game-playing stage in her life, and she has no space for a man who would ever want to make her jealous.

And Khalid. He makes it clear from the start that he is interested in her. He doesn't beat around the bush, and he never shies away from an opportunity to tell her she's beautiful, to admire her intelligence and business acumen, to appreciate her humor and personality. He is the sort of genuine, openly caring hero that I can never get enough of. And best of all? He meets her where she is. When she needs to take things slow because of her relationship baggage? He doesn't pressure her for more. When she wants to let him blow her mind in the bedroom and have some semblance of exclusivity without all of the commitment? He never tries to make her guilty. And when he does trigger her particular insecurities without meaning to, he goes to her to apologize and make things right.

I love both of them, and I think they're great together. I also think the performance--despite having the exact same narrators--was even better than the previous book. I was looking forward to listening to more from their catalogues, but now I'm truly as excited to find the rest of their work as I am to read the rest of Alexandra Warren's backlist.

I also really want one last book in this series. Jayla's little sister and Khalid's cousin were hilarious side characters, and I need to see them as MC's. The scene where Khalid's cousin ends up high as hell on the roof of Khalid's new place, begging Black Jesus to come save him from "white Jesus" before the housewarming party made me laugh out loud.

Overall Rating: 4 Stars
I highly recommend this one, and I've already picked the next Alexandra Warren series I'm going to read. It's time for some sports romance! I'm going to pick up the first Houston Skyhawks book, but I'm equally as excited to get to her basketball romances.
Romance Rating: 3.75 Stars
The more I think about this book, the more I consider bumping this up to a solid 4 stars. I loved this couple, and their romantic arc was great. If you like the way the men in Technical by Alexandria House or Our Desires by Ivy Laika are completely sweet on the MC's, this is a book to add to your TBR asap.
Heat Rating: 3 Stars
A little slow burn compared to The Games We Play, but this one still had plenty of sexy scenes.
Kink Rating: 0* Stars

Dark / Taboo Rating: 0* Stars
1 ... barely. Less than 1 but not quite none? They have a little bit of a boss / client relationship due to the whole influencer gig, but it's never in a way that really creates an unprofessional power dynamic for the sake of this story.

This book but super realistic and relatable.
Jayla Anthony was about her business and all while trying to break away from a habit and the need to be perfect. Newly divorced and wanting a fresh start she not only moves to a new city but changes her career.
Khalid was a lost soul but was getting it together. With a steady job and trying to find better for himself.

The two meet as Khalid is the security guard at the corporation where Jayla works with his flirty ways. They hit it off but keep it professional while at work. Jayla is not the kind of woman that mixes business and pleasure, but sees something in Khalid that he never thought would be away for him to make money. They both find each other attractive, but little bumps in the road, getting in the way when they find their rhythm and they stopped denying the chemistry that the two of them have have to learn some lessons along the way.

Jayla has her mother and her ex husband to blame and Khalid’s loss of a really close loved one and his best friend moving away with again no direction has them both needing to come to terms with some things and make things less confusing for the two of them.

This was my 1st time reading from this author and I did it out of order but I will go and read book one of this series.

She's Still Got It!

Alexandra Warren has quickly become an author that I automatically one-click. She consistently gives good storylines and characters that are really, relatable, and authentic, even to an older reader like me.

Jayla and Khalid's story was a good one. Khalid was still a bit of a knuckle head when we met him in the previous book, so it's nice to see how quickly he's grown from just having a job. I loved how smart and focused Jayla was. I was curious about how Khalid would end up as her client, and loved how fresh and current his new job was. Just perfect for him. Loved that Jayla was slowly getting herself back after being in a bad marriage. Khalid was so good for her.

Enjoyed this one. Check it out, if you haven't done so already. Keep up the great work, Ms. Warren!

Khalid and Jayla. I had SUCH high hopes. And this is a case where the audiobook was not a bonus for me.

So ... it's the same narrators as the first book which makes sense yet somehow is weird here. [I say somehow because ...I've listened to multiple series with the same narrators for different couples...]
I think it's ... :X well she's ... yeah. Not my favorite.

And Jayla is not CHILDISH exactly but ... I don't like her games.
And Eric is a fuckboy, apparently.
And her sister SEEMS so extra but is actually like low key the most mature character. Other than her OTT Khalid online stalking.

I just ... maybe it's my mood but this was a no ... no for me.

It made me unhappy to listen to.

Maybe another day because I did quite enjoy book one.
We'll see.

Excellent!

This was definitely a good one. Awesome meet cute between Jayla and Khalid. I love the instant chemistry they both had for one another. It was magnetic. I loved her sweet, caring and bad girl persona and his suave, down to earth, fine as hell demeanor. They both complimented each other. Londyn, Jamilla, Shaq and Chance are true characters that seem to be great beings to have in one's life because they're the funniest. I mean they all were on one, one helluva trip to crazyville. I was cracking up at their funny banters especially that Shaq because I felt his ass was a little to the left, but funny as all get out. Great Read! ReneeG 👍

Khalid was everything Jaylah didn't know she needed. I enjoyed experiencing a book where Jaylah, the leading woman was financially stable and successful on her own and wasn't portrayed as a damsel in distress needing to be financially "rescued". Additionally, even though Khalid was re-establishing his stability in life he had other redeeming qualities which proves that money isn't the end all be all. An honest man who makes his intentions clear is priceless. I enjoyed the book overall but I don't think that Leon's voice was best suited to the description of Khalid and would recommend reading a physical copy instead.

This was a funny romance story. I love the humorous way Khalid crushed on Jayla. I thought she was going to pick Eric, but of course, good guys prevailed. Although I would have preferred a more confident minded man, Khalid needed that woman to help home see his potential and be an emotional support. Jayla was that woman. Her support build up her love for him.

Khalid fell for Jayla from the moment he saw her. Again he showed no confidence in pursuing her. Luckily he had a best friend that helped get the ball rolling. His come up, newfound celebrity status and money help build his confidence. Khalid knew he had something to offer Jayla.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ — It was an okay read.
🌶️🌶️🌶️ — Sensual with steam.

Jayla and Khalid’s evolution was paced well. Both were learning to grow in their own way, and I appreciated how the story didn’t rush their development. Their connection felt authentic. Maybe even more realistic than the last book, especially since it was a workplace romance that built slowly and naturally.

Healing was a major theme, especially for Jayla, and I thought it was explored well through different circumstances and events. While this isn’t one of Alexandra Warren’s best books, I did like it more than The Games We Play. A solid, steady romance with relatable characters and some grown but not over-the-top spice.

Alexandra definitely didn’t disappoint! Khalid & Jayla were well worth the wait. I was happy we had a chance to get an update on Londyn and Chance, LoLo is still crazy!!! Mila(Jayla’s sister) lol is definitely a spirit animal) Ok on a serious note though, anytime an author allows us to not only enjoy their book but give out a life lesson is always important; breaking generation cycles are real in the black community. Also the lesson of quit making make someone pay for someone else’s choices and mistakes.

Good Book As Usual!!!

I really enjoyed this book especially the vibe between Khalid and Jayla. Khalid met Kayla at work and was crushing on her immediately. Kayla was just coming out of a divorce and dealing with trust issues. This story has it all - sexiness, humor and romance. I was looking forward to this book and Ms. Warren did not disappoint. Ms. Warren showed us how a regular guy just coming up and a corporate woman with mommy issues and trust issues with men can come together and have a compelling relationship. Waiting impatiently on the next book in this series.

Oh this book was spoil good! Jayla was a little flaky with it, understandably so, but flaky nonetheless. I feel like they both played the club situation out wrong. Khalid was genuinely doing his job. Jayla was running wild with her insecurities and they both handled the others perspective wrong. I'm glad they were adult enough to work through it quickly though. I just KNEW ole girl was tonnage prego when she threw up. Great ending although that Jason needs some get back and we need to see how this relationship blosdoms; so you should definitely give us a part two!

Adorable Opposites Attract

Khalid had an instant crush on Jayla the moment he saw her. Jayla had no attention of getting involved with anyone in the wake of her divorce but there’s something special about Khalid.

I really liked the evolution of not only Khalid and Jayla’s relationship but of them as individuals too. The communication between them was also very well done as was the amazing hot chemistry. And Jamila and Shaq were the perfect comic relief!

Love the audio narration of this one!

Lessons and laughs

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. It was filled with lessons and plenty of laughs. Jayla finally knew her worth, found her voice, and lived her best life. Khalid grown and made grown man moves. He was infatuated with Jayla from the start. I like how they grew into their relationship as they discovered that sometimes you can mix business with pleasure. Mila and Shaw had me rolling. This book was very relatable.

Lifes Lessons!

Kayla was deeply wounded by her cheating husband but Khalid was determined to crack that nut wide open! It was really a great story of learning to love and trust again, to learn to forgive past mistakes and just live in the moment. Very good story, I saw Khalid's growth in this story. Great seeing London and Chance making an appearance. Look forward to more stories from these characters as well as seeing Eric mature and find true love!
