ESV Illuminated Scripture Journals pair the entirety of individual books of the Bible with a lightly dotted blank page opposite each page of Bible text, providing space to creatively engage with and reflect on the Word of God. Hand-lettered, gold-ink illustrations by renowned artist Dana Tanamachi are interspersed throughout the blank pages, inviting readers to add their own artwork or reflections to each page. These thin, portable notebooks have unique covers stamped with gold-foil and are great for art journaling, personal Bible reading and prayer, small-group Bible study, or taking notes through a sermon series.

It doesn't matter whether you're religious or what religious faction you follow or really your worldview at all--the Proverbs scribed from Solomon's court are a trove of wisdom for everyday conduct. The prevailing themes are to refrain from hastily reacting, keep your words deliberate, and work diligently (even if it's toil). Really, the keys to contentment without the Buddhist or Stoic disengagement from actually living and engaging your emotions.
You really had to use your brain to decipher some of these and I had to look up at least ten verses for additional assistance. Was very good. I really liked a lot of these verses. I laughed at quite a few, which I haven't done since starting the Bible. They're are a few verses that are repeated throughout Solomon's proverbs.
As a parent, I have often been caught off-guard by the book of Proverbs. The wise writer’s words “My son,” stir a longing to speak into my own sons’ lives with equal frankness. And of course, being a former schoolteacher, my first inclination is to develop some sort of curriculum that churns the instructions of Proverbs into a parade of crafts, memory verses and themed activity sheets.
But then, quietly but persistently, comes the instinct to pray. More specifically, to pray the words of Proverbs for my children. And so I have. For the past 4 years, one verse each day has informed my prayers. Yes, starting with Proverbs chapter 1 verse 1, I have been systematically praying through those same instructions I was longing to speak to my children. I am praying that they would “…treasure up [his] commandments,” “…not despise the Lord’s discipline,” etc. Like a detailed map, God’s Word has been shaping and guiding my prayers for my children. Praying that God will accomplish in their hearts what no clever lesson plans could ever guarantee.
Today, I reached Proverbs chapter 31, verse 31 in my prayers for my sons. Though they were in elementary school when I began, they are now in middle school. And the same book that I’ve been praying through as they learned to read & write, also applies to the emotions, temptations and crushes of middle school. God’s Word is always equal to the task of guiding our prayers through the varied circumstances of life. And this particular volume of Proverbs is a special resource for day-by-day use, as it has blank lined pages across from each verse, great for jotting notes of application, or just copying the verse by hand as you pray.
I’ve been working on reading through the Bible in a year and today I finished the book of Proverbs. This book is linked to King Solomon, it is through him that the wisdom literature began. Not all of the Proverbs in the Book of Proverbs were written by Solomon though. Themes include “The Fear of the Lord” by humbling ourselves before God even if it is inconvenient. The Fear of the Lord is described as the Beginning or foundation of wisdom. Many of the proverbs are described to be based on probability where if you fear the Lord your life will mostly go well, whereas if you don’t, it generally won’t go well. The complex wisdom of this book is that it’s not all black and white. But we are invited to trust in God’s wisdom. These Proverbs are not promises or formulas for success there are no guarantees. All together this book is for every person in every season as a guide for living well in God’s world. Fantastic read!
As with the other volumes, this is proved to be enriching, marvelous. I have written much in the journalist and reflection, adding to the pages. In the book of Proverbs these themes are repeated time and again: Wisdom Diligence Generosity Discipline Peacefulness Fairness Edification with words Discretion Fidelity righteousness Humbleness Honor/Reverence
This collection has a page on the right, and scripture on the left so you can do notes, or reflections. I liked that, and was happy to have this, but do wish it had some in more than ESV version of the translation. Otherwise, a good edition of just the Proverbs for anyone who wishes to read and reflect.
The book of proverbs is a life guiding way of living with wisdom and knowledge. The word of the Lord enriches our souls and hearts always, we must pray and practice wisdom and understanding of proverbs in all aspects of our lives.
Used in conjunction with a Bible study on the book of Proverbs which really showed the relevance of the wisdom contained here, even in these modern times.
