Mikey is a man, who cares greatly for his local community, enjoys meeting people, learning new skills, and loves to drive – anything. This book follows him as he goes about his work for Part-Time Drivers, driving a new machine every day – forklift, concrete mixer, school bus, articulated lorry …. Mikey can drive everything. If it is a machine he hasn’t driven or operated before, then he is a quick learner. The book is written in the present tense (except for the first chapter, which gives his background), so you do feel like you are with Mikey all the way. The language is straightforward, with no lengthy passages of description, so very easy to read. Each chapter involves a new drive. The job is outlined, including any new skills that Mikey needs to accomplish the work. If the drive is long distance, then the route is laid out: which Interstate roads to be taken; which states to be passed through. Mikey starts each job by going through a checklist, to make sure that everything is in order before he sets off. This reminded me so much of our checklists when we were caravanning around Europe – tyres, lights, indicators, windows, gas, steadies, … After a few chapters, I was doing the checks with Mikey. Mikey also has a job as a volunteer fireman, and it is while attending the two fires in the book, that most of the excitement takes place. That is not to say at all, that the rest of the book is boring – it is just slower paced, interesting and informative, rather than exciting as such. The book is ideal for fans of large vehicles, and those who – like Mikey – love to drive, and there are all too few books around for those people. I don’t generally fit into those categories, but I learned a lot from this book, and it held my interest throughout. I did have a few minor complaints. There were a number of phrases that were repeated over and over, and I was not as interested in the love story as I was in the machinery. But I found it an unexpectedly enjoyable read. As there is neither sex nor violence in the book, it can be safely recommended to readers of all ages.
I learnt a lot from the book. Mikey explains a lot about the vehicles that he drives and he is a quick learner. Any person who enjoys machines in general would love the book.
This is the second book I’ve read from TJ Wray. Continuing his good story-telling skill, TJ demonstrates a true American spirit by telling about a wonderful story of bits and pieces of everyday professional life of an ordinary truck driver as well as a volunteer firefighter, Mikey who is hard-working, passionate, optimistic, brave and family-loving. What makes The Adventures of CDL Mikey more readable is that it is based on the author’s personal experiences, coupled with some real-life characters. This book is a page turner, making the reader wanting to know more about what happens to Mikey after his leaving a nomadic life.
